Brittania rules for Dave

One of the better trained male members of the Toad Hall Cottages team treated his wife to a delicious Valentines meal last night at the Britannia @ The Beach seafood shack in Beesands, home to a handful of our seaside holiday cottages. However, in true Toad Hall spirit he was sure to keep his work hat on, albeit discreetly, to ensure he was able to provide us with some great feedback to pass on to anyone looking for a good seafood restaurant in South Devon.

The setting itself is quite something, just a few yards from Beesands beach it would be hard to eat a fish that had had a shorter land journey without tucking into it on the very boat from which it was caught. Affectionately known as ‘The Shack’, the small business has expanded from a village store and fishmonger to a truly unique rustic cafe/restaurant.

Eating from the special Valentine’s Day menu, the couple enjoyed a feast of fantastic seafood and traditional cuisine including battered Start Bay scallops, pan-fried monk fish, a rack of lamb and a trio of delicious deserts.

Our chivalrous reviewer, who is not always easily pleased when it comes to dining out, told us “the food was fantastic and highly recommended. We took our own wine and enjoyed the company of our hosts Dave, the chef, and Rhianna very much!”

The Shack offers alfresco dining inside, thanks to clear pull-down surrounds that retain the warmth but give the feeling of eating outside and light up beautifully in the dark of night to give a truly special atmosphere. Guests staying in Beesands, or nearby, can buy fresh fish right there on the beach and stop for a delicious breakfast or slap up meal as well!
