Found on the banks of the River Tamar in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, sleepy Calstock has to be Cornwall’s best kept secret.

This friendly rural village in the heart of the Tamar Valley is dominated by the magnificent railway viaduct making Calstock surprisingly well connected to London via Plymouth for any visitors arriving by train. The village itself  is made up of pretty cottages and villas lining narrow streets criss-crossing the steep banks of the Tamar which winds lazily through Calstock on its way to the sea.  The river is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding and the surrounding countryside provides a fabulous playground for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers, making holidays in Calstock ideal for families and lovers of the great outdoors.

Calstock has two great pubs, excellent coffee shops, craft workshops and a thriving arts centre providing theatre, comedy, art exhibitions and live music gigs throughout the year.  And just a mile or two along the river you’ll find Cotehele Estate,  a stunningly beautiful tudor manor house owned by the National Trust along with its restored working watermill, riverside gardens and quay.  Cotehele is home to a huge array of events for all ages from wildlife walks and pond dipping to yoga and heritage days, and it's also a magical spot just to while away a few hours exploring or enjoying a cup of tea in the cafe.

Add to this the fact that the ocean city of Plymouth is just a short drive away providing excellent facilities and access to South Cornwall’s beautiful coastline, the pretty market town of Tavistock with its famous markets and restaurants is easily accessible, and the wild expanses of Dartmoor stretch for miles to the north east and you’ll soon realise that pretty Calstock is the ideal base for your Cornwall holiday.

Cotehele, National Trust
(2 miles)

(8)

A Tudor house and estate with delightful collections, a garden and its own quay,  Cotehele was the ancestral home of the Edgcumbe family and is perched high on the hill above the River Tamar.  Decorated with tapestries, armour and lots of original features, the inside is testament to its adoring owners while outside there are formal terraces and a valley garden to get lost in, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote leading down to the river.  It’s peaceful and tranquil and a delightful place to explore while you’re visiting Cornwall, plus they have an excellent restaurant in the 15th century barn, serving homemade cakes, hot soups, wine, ale and lager.

In desperate need of visitors and funds - excellent inside play area for children . My 14 month old grandson was in seventh heaven ,sitting on the tractors and police cars .Enjoyed being able to hand feed the donkeys. The under 3 years area with the toys looked as though it needed a good clean .
