Description
Battery Cottage is built on the site of a 14th century fortification that still retains evidence of the dry moat. This delightful retreat for two, part of the owner’s home but totally separate, is set in an unrivalled position close to the mouth of the Yealm estuary. From Noss Mayo the cottage is reached along a mile long drive, half of which is unmade, through National Trust woods that border the estuary. The South-West Coastal Path passes in front of the cottage and there are some exceptional views of the sea from many points along the path. A fairly steep and narrow path leads down to a shingle cove, Cellars Beach, 300 metres away and ideal for swimming. Walkers will revel in this wonderful spot, or the romantic of heart can sip a glass of wine while watching the sun setting over the sea from the beach. The cottage, all on one level, is deceptively spacious and beautifully presented with lovely oak floors and attractive furnishings.. It is perfect for a couple or family with a young baby. The cottage is supplied with its own spring water which is UV treated. A welcome basket is provided for you on arrival.

Well equipped and beautifully fitted kitchen with ceramic hob, built-in oven, fridge/freezer, microwave and washing machine. Spacious double bedroom with superking 6ft bed, fitted wardrobes and French doors to the garden. Bathroom with bath, shower over, basin and WC.
The cottage is reached along a mile long drive, half of which is unmade, through National Trust woods that border the estuary and form part of the South West Coastal path. Private area of garden with a small paved area provided with table and chairs. The coastal path runs in front of the cottage garden shielded by a wall.
Noss Mayo is a pretty riverside village nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the south coast of Devon, between Salcombe and Plymouth. The village faces neighbouring Newton Ferrers across a beautiful tidal creek in the River Yealm estuary, and is bordered by picturesque woodlands.
Noss Mayo enjoys stunning views over the estuary, and offers a peaceful spot from which to watch varied bird and water life as well as activities on the river. The sheltered harbour, with its colourful sailing dinghies, is well protected from storms in the Channel and makes ideal sailing waters for novices and experienced sailors alike.
Wander past charming waterside cottages, to the Swan Inn for a refreshing beer or to The Ship Inn for fine food. At low tide, cross the causeway to Newton Ferrers for a few shops, a café, and the Dolphin Inn with its ample beer garden looking over the creek. High tide offers the excuse to take the ferry (or paddle or sail!) to secure your fresh croissants from the local Post Office and store.
Walkers will enjoy the half hour stroll or more from Noss Mayo through idyllic woodland to Cellars Beach, located on the South West Coast Path, and from there, up to Gara Point. There are several unspoilt beaches within a short drive, which include family-friendly Wembury, dog-friendly Wonwell, and beautiful beach Mothecombe which is a hidden gem and offers excellent bathing at low tide.
Plymouth is conveniently situated, just 10 miles away, and is well worth visiting for a day trip or two. Highlights include the Hoe, with its iconic lighthouse and spectacular views across the world-famous natural harbour, the National Marine Aquarium, and the vibrant Barbican area with its theatre and a fantastic selection of waterside restaurants, pubs, and bars.
A holiday cottage in Noss Mayo offers a very peaceful base from which to explore stunning coastline, pretty villages and the historic city of Plymouth.

Our Tesco delivery man couldn’t find the house so Lisa gave us a Red Cross parcel for breakfast with lots of great food. No charge. Thoroughly brilliant. The ship itself is an absolutely wonderful place whether for a great lunch or dinner or just a drink. The Trio of Fish starter is beyond good and the Fresh fish is second to none Absolutely recommended!

Lovely garden by the water, slick service from a personable young team, but given this is regarded as more of a gastro-pub, we found the food to be underwhelming. The fish and chips was greasy, the chips underdone and soggy and you really can't charge £16 and serve tartare sauce out of a jar.

However the owners felt a need to take their staff on holiday the week we were there, which is peak holiday time, so it was closed the day after we arrived! A lovely gesture for sure and a sign that this pub has overcome the lockdown dramas in such a short period. Used another village pub instead, which was fantastic.

We booked a large group with children for an early evening dinner. We were welcomed and made extremely comfortable in the new 'glass house'. This was a beautiful private room opening onto the terrace where the children could watch the boats and we could all enjoy the view. The service was impeccable and the food first class. Had a lovely Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve 2018 and they even managed to fit us in early evening without an advance reservation so that was very impressive. We had understood The Swan to be the more modest of the two pubs in Noss Mayo and certainly the outdoor seating area can't compete with The Ship. But when it comes to food...this place knocked spots off the competition. Perfectly cooked fish, crunchy chips, colourful and imaginative salad and delicious home made tartare sauce. Now that's how to do it! Delightful friendly staff too.

This is the place to go if you want to feel part of the community, plus there is the added benefit of its prime location looking down the river. Food is extremely good, and nothing is too much trouble. The chef even came out to discuss my wife's gluten-free requirements to ensure she got what she wanted. It's a first class village pub where you're welcome whether you just want a pint, or a meal!

The Swan has been refurbished to a high standard, food is more basic than The Ship but nonetheless still great, service is a bit slow during busy periods as it’s become popular. Lovely seating outside the pub and down on Pope’s Quay where the kids can go crabbing as you sip on your drink! Dogs welcome inside which is handy.

The Swan Inn is under new management and is a wonderful place to go for a drink and/or food. During our stay we did both. We had a three course meal and all courses were excellent. The staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. My steak came as ordered. The cask ales were well kept. The pub was clean, modern and buzzing with the chatter of our fellow diners / drinkers. First time we have been into this pub and it will not be our last. Would advise to book in advance for Friday or Saturday nights, as it is a popular establishment.

We had very poor service on the evening we went to the Ship. they were busy, but we didn't get the food we ordered and waited 30 minutes for our dessert order to be taken only to leave without - as did other people near to us. On a walk to find the local Co-op, and other shops, we stumbled across this pub by accident, as we knew of the Ship Inn, which we could see from our accommodation, and the Swan, which was on our side of the estuary, two minutes from our accommodation, but The Dolphin was our favourite. It had a a competitively priced varied menu, with a pleasant seating area which led down to the waters edge. The second “Voss”, (purpose built crossing) was located just here, so at low tide you could walk across the estuary, which actually would bring you out to the outside seating area of the Swan!. All in all a lovely venue in a beautiful location.

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.
Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

Long single track drive from Noss Mayo so care needed but we had no problems and this is mentioned in the details. Property is on the South West Coast Path which is great for walks. Although can get very busy especially at weekends. The garden in front of the lounge, although private to the property, is easily overlooked by walkers passing-by. However, we soon became used to this. We are very happy to recommend.

We enjoyed our stay immensely but I do think there should be mention of the narrowness of the long approach road which we thought quite daunting as there are very few passing places. Also it would have been helpful to have information on crossing the river at low tide and how to access the actual crossing place. We only found it as we saw 2 people on it!!

We enjoyed our stay but found the track to the property challenging. We feared meeting another vehicle from the opposite direction & having to back! Cars parked in passing places at the wk end made it nigh on impossible to pass anything! The property was very well equipped & all very clean & homely. We would not have chosen it if we had realised how difficult it is to get down to the beach. My husband being disabled found it limiting . But we have no complaints about the actual property. It has taught us that we must take more care in finding a property more suitable for us.

had a lovely stay at the cottage the owners very welcoming this cottage not ideal if you are wanting to use the car to go to places as the roads very long and narrow,there are some lovely walks from the cottage you cannot see the sea from the sitting area in the garden and it is by a very busy footpath so not private (it is a coastal path)and the sitting room on full view there is no mobile reception or wfi ,which is ideal if you are using this cottage as a winding down holiday but not suitable for anybody who needs to stay connected

Sadly the water supply failed for 36 hours due to a neighbour leaving a hose on (spring water supply). Our hosts did everything possible to make up for it and were lovely.

Yes,enjoyed our visit, owners were extremely welcoming. Drive/ distance to the village was longer than expected and became a bit tiresome. Feel that this cottage is best suited to couples who want to be within walking distance of the beach and coastal path rather than those looking to utilise a car to explore further afield. Fire extinguisher should be located in a more accessible place. Not out of reach on top of a high cupboard

We enjoyed our stay very much. We went to the Ship for supper once, but only because we felt we ought to get out. We also drove out to walk along to Bolt Head one day, again because we felt we ought to get out. Neither was necessary, as Battery Cottage and the coast path on the doorstep was delightful enough to stay in for the entire week. Though we did take the opportunity to stock up on fresh milk. I'm sure we'll be back.

We enjoyed our stay immensely but I do think there should be mention of the narrowness of the long approach road which we thought quite daunting as there are very few passing places. Also it would have been helpful to have information on crossing the river at low tide and how to access the actual crossing place. We only found it as we saw 2 people on it!!

We enjoyed our stay but found the track to the property challenging. We feared meeting another vehicle from the opposite direction & having to back! Cars parked in passing places at the wk end made it nigh on impossible to pass anything! The property was very well equipped & all very clean & homely. We would not have chosen it if we had realised how difficult it is to get down to the beach. My husband being disabled found it limiting . But we have no complaints about the actual property. It has taught us that we must take more care in finding a property more suitable for us.

had a lovely stay at the cottage the owners very welcoming this cottage not ideal if you are wanting to use the car to go to places as the roads very long and narrow,there are some lovely walks from the cottage you cannot see the sea from the sitting area in the garden and it is by a very busy footpath so not private (it is a coastal path)and the sitting room on full view there is no mobile reception or wfi ,which is ideal if you are using this cottage as a winding down holiday but not suitable for anybody who needs to stay connected

We absolutely loved this cottage and its surroundings. A nice welcome from the owners. We never feel we will go back to somewhere we have been before as there are so many places in the world to visit but we both felt we would return to this cottage at some time in the future. Our Tesco delivery man couldn’t find the house so Lisa gave us a Red Cross parcel for breakfast with lots of great food. No charge. Thoroughly brilliant. Lovely garden by the water, slick service from a personable young team, but given this is regarded as more of a gastro-pub, we found the food to be underwhelming. The fish and chips was greasy, the chips underdone and soggy and you really can't charge £16 and serve tartare sauce out of a jar.

However the owners felt a need to take their staff on holiday the week we were there, which is peak holiday time, so it was closed the day after we arrived! A lovely gesture for sure and a sign that this pub has overcome the lockdown dramas in such a short period. Used another village pub instead, which was fantastic.

Had a lovely Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve 2018 and they even managed to fit us in early evening without an advance reservation so that was very impressive. We had understood The Swan to be the more modest of the two pubs in Noss Mayo and certainly the outdoor seating area can't compete with The Ship. But when it comes to food...this place knocked spots off the competition. Perfectly cooked fish, crunchy chips, colourful and imaginative salad and delicious home made tartare sauce. Now that's how to do it! Delightful friendly staff too.

This is the place to go if you want to feel part of the community, plus there is the added benefit of its prime location looking down the river. Food is extremely good, and nothing is too much trouble. The chef even came out to discuss my wife's gluten-free requirements to ensure she got what she wanted. The Swan has been refurbished to a high standard, food is more basic than The Ship but nonetheless still great, service is a bit slow during busy periods as it’s become popular. Lovely seating outside the pub and down on Pope’s Quay where the kids can go crabbing as you sip on your drink! Dogs welcome inside which is handy.

The Swan Inn is under new management and is a wonderful place to go for a drink and/or food. During our stay we did both. We had a three course meal and all courses were excellent. The staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. My steak came as ordered. The cask ales were well kept. The pub was clean, modern and buzzing with the chatter of our fellow diners / drinkers. First time we have been into this pub and it will not be our last. Would advise to book in advance for Friday or Saturday nights, as it is a popular establishment.

Beautiful pub. Beaitifull setting. Sunny on tbe terrace in tbe evenings. Nice staff. Food looked good but we didnt eat there. Limited parking and a walk to tbe pub which us at rhe bottom if a short steep hill. Worth rhe hike back up for tge sunshine at sunset though. Great gins.

We had very poor service on the evening we went to the Ship. they were busy, but we didn't get the food we ordered and waited 30 minutes for our dessert order to be taken only to leave without - as did other people near to us. We did speak to the Manager about this. We also went for lunch which was good.

On a walk to find the local Co-op, and other shops, we stumbled across this pub by accident, as we knew of the Ship Inn, which we could see from our accommodation, and the Swan, which was on our side of the estuary, two minutes from our accommodation, but The Dolphin was our favourite. It had a a competitively priced varied menu, with a pleasant seating area which led down to the waters edge. The second “Voss”, (purpose built crossing) was located just here, so at low tide you could walk across the estuary, which actually would bring you out to the outside seating area of the Swan!. All in all a lovely venue in a beautiful location.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the Nation’s largest aquarium as well as being a charity organisation, and as such has an extremely exciting and prevalent role to play in driving marine conservation. Alongside the tourist attraction they run learning programmes for more than 30,000 children each year, have a consultancy branch and host events from weddings to birthdays and corporate functions as well. While you’re on holiday in South Devon, however, you will be more interested to know that this underwater world of discovery has the largest native exhibition in the UK exploring all the fish you have heard of and rarer varieties as well. In addition to British beauties there’s an Atlantic Ocean tank with large Nurse Sharks, sand tiger sharks and lemon sharks as well as ray and clownfish. One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.
Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

Glorious beach at the mouth of the Erme. Narrow lanes and very limited parking. No toilets, cafes etc - wonderful! Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.
