In the midst of rolling moorland and above the scenic valley of the River Barle, Brightworthy Farm boasts a stunning Exmoor location set two miles from the picturesque and unspoilt village of Withypool.  This handsome, rustic and secluded farmhouse is accessed via a long driveway and stands amongst 137 acres, offering ultimate peace and relaxation for all ages.  Many outstanding moorland walks are available directly from its front door plus DIY horse stabling may also be available (please enquire for details).   The detached farmhouse is spacious and light with outstanding views and features a large enclosed garden. Whilst some aspects of the house may not be ultra-modern, this is readily forgiven and more than made up by the property’s character, space and location. The bedrooms have recently undergone a sympathetic refurbishment and the living areas, with their open fires and wood stoves offer plenty of comfort after a long day of exploring.

Withypool, with its friendly pub, village shop and tearoom, is only two miles by car or one mile on foot by following the meandering River Barle.  A little farther afield there are many attractions to suit all tastes including the National Trust Dunster Castle, the West Somerset Steam Railway or why not while away a day on a sandy beach at Minehead, Woolacombe or Saunton.

In brief, Brightworthy Farm is a great family house in a stunningly beautiful area with an abundance of fantastic walking, riding and fishing opportunities – quite simply a country living holiday at its best.

The quiet unspoilt village of Withypool lies in the heart of the beautiful Exmoor National Park. With its characterful cottages, country pub, and traditional tea rooms, this ancient village is a wonderful place to base your Exmoor holiday.

Surrounded by interesting Bronze Age sites, bridleways and footpaths, Withypool is an excellent choice for anyone looking to get loose on the moor for a walking holiday. Even those with just a desire to take in some clean air, star gaze, and then cosy up in a country pub will feel right at home. From the village, the 3-4 mile walk to the ancient clapper bridge, Tarr Steps, and its wonderful adjacent inn, makes for a very enjoyable excursion.

Exmoor boasts over six hundred miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore. The moor is steeped in history and is unsurpassed in terms of its natural open scenery and beauty, with pretty heather, deep wooded combes and its famous Exmoor ponies and red deer.

The nearby village of Dunster and its ancient castle, stunning gardens and traditional tea rooms are well worth a visit, as are the pretty coastal harbour towns of Lynton and Lynmouth.

Decent pub food albeit at the top end price-wise. Pint of local ale well in excess of £4… a shock to the system given that where I live our local Allendale Brewery pint is about £1 cheaper. But apart from that the hospitality was good and friendly, kids menu is well-priced and generous.

Porlock Beach
(9 miles)

After 30 miles of Exmoor coastline that’s predominantly cliffs, at Porlock the land flattens out and a unique mile long shingle ridge and an inland salt marsh have formed.  It’s a short walk from there to the centre of Porlock, where there are lots of marked footpaths to explore.  Porlock Weir Beach itself is a pebble beach that welcomes dogs all year round.  It’s a prime spot for swimming, fishing, surfing and sailing, and there are cafes, restaurants, toilets, pubs and shops close by to explore.  There is pay and display parking close to the beach, so don’t forget your change when you visit, and you will be pleased to know that the water quality is reputedly excellent.

Minehead Beach
(12 miles)

(1)

Perpetually featured amongst the best beaches in the area, Minehead Beach is in one of Somerset’s busiest holiday areas.  Divided into two sections, The Strand is a wide sand and shingle beach that faces North-to-North West, it looks out across the Bristol Channel towards Wales. Terminus meanwhile is the north-facing part that was almost completely washed away in the early ‘90s.  After a multimillion pound project, a sea wall was completed.  Today it’s an excellent spot for swimming, kite-surfing and windsurfing.  Dog restrictions apply in the summer and there are cafes, restaurants, toilets and shops all close by.

Lynmouth Beach
(12 miles)

A shingle beach that arcs out into the sea from Lynton, Lynmouth Beach is a popular spot for surfing, but there’s no lifeguard cover so be careful when you go!  The area is known for its excellent scenery and pleasant walking along the sea front and along the banks of the Lyn River which flows between the two towns of Lynton and Lynmouth.  There is also a cliff railway from Lynton down to the sea front.  At Lynton there is a smaller beach with rocks at low tide, while Lynmouth Beach is longer and sandier.  Lynmouth has level access all the way along, and there are several car parks in the town as well as road parking by the river and beach.  Toilets, cafes and shops are close by, but there aren’t any activities available, it’s all about enjoying the scenery!

Wringcliff Beach
(13 miles)

On the South West Coast Path, Wringcliff Beach is within walking distance of the little town of Lynton and a number of secluded bays along the coastline.  The beach itself is a secluded bay surrounded by high cliffs with a steep access path, making it a tricky one to visit if you have small children with you.  Of course, because it’s a little difficult to get to, it’s also wonderfully peaceful with incredible views to enjoy. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year around and it’s perfect for adventurous walkers.  There’s parking is in the valley of the rocks which is accessed and signposted through Lynton, but once you’re there it’s not that easy to reach toilets and restaurants, to if the weather permits, take a picnic and enjoy the day!

Blue Anchor Bay & Dunster
(13 miles)

(2)

Long sand and shingle beaches peppered with alabaster rocks that are perfect for finding fossils, Blue Anchor Bay and Dunster Beach in Somerset are adjacent to one another, and are beautiful places to while away the afternoon, whatever time of the year. Dogs are allowed on the beaches all year round, which is a novelty, there are toilets close by, and a pub as well for those lazy lunches after a morning’s stroll.  The West Somerset Railway comes close to the beach, adding an extra layer of interest, and there’s plenty of parking close to both of them as well, which is always a blessing.  The beaches are tidal and can get a little muddy at low tide, so careful not to slip and don’t get caught out when the water comes in!

Both well-worth a visit.

April 2019

April 2024

Absolutely loved our stay. Brightworthy is a unique and wonderful pace. Everything that you need for a warm and comfortable holiday is provided. Walking from the doorstep. The best view in the whole world from the house. Completely secluded and peaceful. We can’t fault it.

June 2023

We were a party of 8, ages from 11 to 77. We all loved the rural isolation of Brightworthy Farm and the beauty of the surrounding countryside. We had a great holiday and enjoyed some lovely walking along the river to Withypool and other walks across Exmoor. We are very much looking forward to staying at the farm again.

April 2023

We absolutely loved our stay. Brightworthy Farm is unique, perfectly positioned for walking and riding straight from the door. The house is warm, clean and comfortable and masses of hot water. The views are magical. We love this place and return year after year.

October 2022

There were a large number of dead flies around the bedroom windows

July 2022

I can't say we enjoyed our stay. We both got ill and not sure where we caught the illness from. The weather was appalling. Probably lovely if the weather was good but the house is a bit neglected.

June 2022

All comments above. Thank you. We had a great week despite negative comments. Oh, yes. No book for guests to leave comments. We always love reading other people’s discoveries - what they enjoyed, where they went etc and rather rely on recommendations. Very friendly service at the Withypool pub, Royal Oak. Good pub food.

May 2022

Needs new beds, had to fix the double bed. Cutlery was from the 50's or earlier, no electric kettle, poor lighting in ' 2nd kitchen '

May 2022

Stunning location. Very comfortable. Didn't want to come home!

May 2022

Absolutely loved our stay. Brightworthy is in a perfect location , the views are tremendous, the walking and the riding straight from the farmhouse both excellent. Warm, comfortable, everything you could possible need. A cream tea on arrival was very welcome as were some Easter eggs that delighted the grandchildren. All in all a wonderful holiday.

March 2022

The location is excellent if you like it secluded and peaceful

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Brightworthy Farm.

November 2021

We loved our stay as we always do. It is a wonderful location and a very relaxing and easy place to be. A great place.

April 2021

We absolutely loved our stay here. Brightworthy is a very special place. Warm and comfortable in a wonderful location. Well equipped, everything we needed. We walked and rode horses every day and then relaxed in this fabulous farmhouse.

November 2019

Personally I loved the isolation, wet weather had an impact purely on not being able to walk along the river to Withypool as the bank had flooded. The peace and tranquillity was exactly what I was looking for. Some of my party would have preferred a bigger telly for the cosy nights in front of the open fire. Loved the access to games and lack of access to the internet!! Great for family time but more difficult for the 2 older members of our party due to their mobility. The dog adored it!! Thank you to Mr & Mrs Pring for sharing this beautiful cottage!!

October 2019

Warm, comfortable and thoughtfulo accomodation.

April 2019

We had a fabulous two weeks at Brightworthy Farm. We took dogs and horses and grandchildren. It could not have been better. Brightworthy is not grand or luxurious but it is well equipped, clean, warm, masses of hot water and is in the most beautiful location. All in all it was perfect!

April 2019

Great cottage, second time staying here. Will be back

October 2018

Brightworthy Farm is idyllic, very peaceful with beautiful views. The house was homely and comforatable, we wil definitely go again.

July 2018

We had a wonderful stay! We loved the remote location and rustic charm of this beautiful farmhouse and hope we can return. We didn’t want to leave!

July 2018

Really remote location. Quite and relaxing surroundings. Well stocked house for equipment. The two fridges helped the need to run to shops frequently. Double bed really comfortable. Wife feel in love with Aga. Great walks all round the property. The ice cream in town is worth the walk. Will comeback when in the area.

June 2018

Brightworthy is unique. I didn’t want to come home

May 2018

Apart from the driveway, we loved the property. Unfortunately we were not in our usual good health and we missed 2 days of our holiday. We tried to contact Mrs Pring to see if we could extend our stay but there was no reply. Loved the Aga.

May 2018

Yes loved it :-)

May 2018

For a property of its type and location it was of the very first rank. Absolutely perfect on this occasion for a small family celebration of an 80th birthday

November 2017

All was perfect for us. Bunch of blokes on a walking weekend and it was a lovely house in a beautiful position. Really well equipped, lots of extra touches, spice, sugar, tea coffee etc which was very thoughtful. We will be back in the immortal words of Arnie!

October 2017

We had a lovely time at Brightworthy, it was very well equipped and using the aga for a week was a joy. Walking out of the back door and down to the river was perfect. I'm sure we will be back. Thank you.

September 2017

We loved Brightworthy. If you want chic modern and immaculate don't go there - but if you want a proper traditional farmhouse, excellently equipped, in the most stunning setting then it is perfect. Generous welcome goodies and lovely note from owner were much appreciated, beautiful walking in every direction from the door, but central to explore Exmoor, Somerset and Devon by car.

June 2017

My family enjoyed the stay.Great views all around and lovely walks. Our dog loved the large front garden. Good location for children who appreciate nature.

June 2017

Brightworthy Farm is situation in the most stunning location and is so peaceful and relaxing. The countryside around is beautiful, there is a lovely walk into Withypool - the Red Lion does very good food and the general store is well stocked. Our party consisted of two grandparents, two parents, two teenagers (and two dogs) and the house was spacious and comfortable enough to accommodate us all generously! The garden is a lovely place to relax, too, with lots of birdsong (including a cuckoo in the distance). We all said that we would like to return to this house in the future - can't recommend it highly enough.

April 2017

Very comfortable and well equipped house. Efficient log burner ensured that house was always warm. The isolated location would not appeal to everyone but was ideal for our family holiday.

February 2017

An excellent (and beautiful) location from which to explore Exmoor. Very remote. Local pub, the Royal Oak, 1 miles walk/ 2 mile drive away. Comfortable beds. Highly recommend for those with a sense of adventure who hark back to the 'good old days' in the country.
