Harbertonford is a small working village set on the edge of the picturesque Harbourne, a tributary of the river Dart tributary. The village is situated in the heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty that is particularly popular with visitors who enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of a rural setting.

The village of Harbertonford is served by a church, pub and local shops, and is also fortunate to be located just a 5 minute drive from the historic town of Totnes, with its winding streets, bohemian culture, characterful shops, popular street market, and mainline train station from London Paddington.

For less conventional transport, river cruises run regularly between Totnes and the maritime town of Dartmouth, where you can enjoy wandering the cobbled streets, and making the most of the numerous boutiques, art galleries, wonderful eateries and stunning waterfront. A visit to Agatha Christie's home at Greenway, across the water near Kingswear, is also a must for the holiday itinerary.

Harbertonford's neighbouring villages of Dittisham, Tuckenhay, Ashprington and Stoke Gabriel are also well worth exploring. This part of the Dart valley is famed for its beautiful rolling countryside sweeping down to the river, unspoilt tree-lined banks, and secret creeks.

Meanwhile, there are several outstanding beaches within a 30 minute drive of Harbertonford, including Blackpool Sands, Slapton Sands, Bantham and Bigbury-on-Sea (with the famous Burgh Island).

A holiday cottage in Harbertonford is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful holiday in this pretty corner of South Devon, whilst being within easy reach of some of the most stunning coastline and family-friendly beaches in the county too.

Excellent food, lovely old pub and village. Worth a visit.

Delicious Sunday lunch especially the roast beef. Only disappointment was the treacle tart. Everything else was lovely. Would only add that the vegetables need to be brought out immediately after the meat.

We enjoyed a lovely meal sitting by the river

July 2023

We recently stayed in the local area and visited the Waterman's Arms on several occasions. We really enjoyed our evening's on the riverside and found there was a good selection to eat and drink. We dined at the pub on several occasions and always had great food at a very reasonable price, the handmade pizza's were great and the kids loved it too! looking forward to visit again on our next return visit too the area.

September 2022

A good place for a drink beside the water

September 2022

Love, love, love this pub ?my husband and I discovered it 30+ years ago and then last year rediscovered it. We were back again this year and introduced four new folks to it who also fell in love with it so therefore we were there every day of our holiday. Staff are lovely and they do good honest tasty food, not an extensive menu but that way you know it’s not out of freezer into a mircowave. We were all sad to leave it behind so much so that we booked in for breakfast on our last morning! Great place, proper pub, locals use it too.

June 2022

We enjoyed a very pleasant meal there. The service was swift & so friendly. The area by the river is an absolute delight

July 2021

Great atmosphere and excellent friendly staff who were coping with a very busy pub. Food was basic pub grub but well cooked and presented.

July 2021

A very welcoming pub with a supporting menu to enjoy.

June 2021

Lovely old fashioned country pub and we got a great welcome on both of our visits, we had first visited it some years ago and it was so nice that it hadn’t changed or been ruined with a make over. Staff nice, helpful and very friendly - Nadia our waitress was just great and a good laugh too. We enjoyed our food very much and the ambiance. Cannot wait for our planned return visit next year, Hazel and A.J.

May 2021

Had a couple of pub meals here, a good standard of food in lovely surroundings.

October 2020

This pub was just a few minutes walk from where we were staying. Although the food was good basic pub food it was let down by the 'atmosphere' in the pub.

October 2018

Friendly pub with good food and good service

September 2018

Lovely location, food and service good but basic pub grub.

July 2018

Sorry, my review submitted a few minutes ago was submitted in error, and related to another pub in the area. We enjoyed the food at the Watermans Arms and the service was good. Lovely spot on the river and would recommend.

July 2018

We ate at the Watermans Arms every evening during our stay in Tuckenhay, which was an enjoyable stroll from our cottage. The staff were very welcoming and the menu was quite extensive. We both managed to eat something different each night during our weeks stay and the service was quick. Food was attractively presented and very good; we didn't have one bad experience. We were well looked after by the waitresses and would highly recommend.

June 2018

We visited 3 times. Very friendly pub. Good food, if anything to comment, the portions were on the large side for us.

Excellent. Lovely food, helpful staff and a superb location

September 2022

Amazing evenings spent at this pub, crabbing and enjoying a quiet drink whilst watching the boats. The food is amazing too.

August 2022

We visited this pub last year 2021 when we encountered problems I.e. not enough staff, the staff there was were not at all cheerful and welcoming and the cleanliness of the place including the actual tables & the ladies was poor. Sorry to say we tried again this year and there still was not enough staff, there was a five deep queue for the bar who the staff were ignoring because they were giving priority to people who were ordering food! We gave up and went to another establishment. What a shame because it’s in a grand situation Floyd must be turning in his grave!!

June 2022

A lovely place to enjoy a meal. We visited twice & particularly enjoyed sitting by the dock & watching the yachts go back & forth

May 2022

Fabulous place, great food.

April 2022

Lovely pub friendly staff nice atmosphere

November 2021

Very nice, struggling with staff levels and seats rather hard. Food ok

September 2021

Excellent food and location

August 2021

Unfriendly eye rolling waitress. Decided to walk down the road to the Watermans Arms and ate there instead several times!

July 2021

Very very busy and tables not cleared but staff and food were friendly and doing their best in difficult times.

July 2021

We had a table booked for our Tuesday night and had researched the menu at home before we left for hol: so we were surprised to get a more upmarket selection at a quite higher cost! What we had was good, but there was a but! Husband had the lamb and it came with nothing else at all. Service started off well but we had a long wait to order our desserts, not enough staff for volume of customers.

May 2021

Had takeaway fish & chips one night and ate at the pub 2 nights and it was absolutely delicious

December 2019

Good food. Good local walks too.

October 2019

We especially liked the Malsters Arms, which was just a few minutes’ walk away from where we were staying. We enjoyed having a drink sitting outside on the quay, take away fish and chips and an excellent meal in the restaurant (on different days).

October 2018

Good food and friendly staff, would recommend booking

September 2018

Food good but service extremely poor. Staff appeared very disorganised. I think the pub is living off its past history re Keith Floyd. Pub also starting to look a little tired and needs some money spending on it.

July 2018

As we were staying in the village, we tried to eat here one evening, but they were fully booked. The bar man was quite abrupt when we asked for a table, which put us off trying again for another evening. We heard from another couple that they had experienced the same thing, hence why we ate at the Watermans Arms each evening, as they were most welcoming.

June 2018

Great food and service in a delightful village by the river. One of our favourite places.

May 2018

Really lovely meals again here. Very welcoming and accommodating to our two children.

April 2018

A friendly pub in great location, with very good food.

October 2017

Looks lovely if pricey Tried to eat here on a Thursday but it was fully booked

Don't expect Alton Towers- but if you want a great place to spend the day and keep the kids entertained, then this is the best there is in South Devon. I'd say better for 7-13s than anything over....

September 2023

A great way to spend an hour, just off the high street. Interesting interpretation boards and a lovely little gift shop, the views are worth the climb to the top of the tower. Otherwise, not much to see - but a must if you’ve a day in Totnes.

September 2023

There are excellent views from the castle. A most enjoyable visit

August 2023

Unexpectedly hands-on. Loved seeing the barrel clock chime the remote bell by the front door via a cable. Did not expect to see the computing area on top floor with history of Charles Babbage and association with Totnes. We learnt many things, not least the origin of the wardrobe :-)

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(7 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

November 2020

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded

August 2018

Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.

August 2017

Broadsands Beach
(8 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(8 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(9 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

We have stayed many many times in this lovely cottage, and do always enjoy ourselves. It suits our needs as our family live in the same village. Nice to have new sofas in there and very grateful for the bag of goodies and large bag of logs on arrival.

July 2023

Good bus links

August 2022

Very much! Lovely cottage with great facilities and we very much appreciated the welcome basket of goodies. The village shop is excellent!

June 2022

We enjoyed our stay. We had glorious weather. The bright kitchen extension leading onto the always sunny patio was much appreciated.

June 2022

What a super cottage to make spend our holiday in. Perfect location to go out and about visiting Kingsbridge, Totnes, Dartmouth and the beaches, but also a lovely peaceful place to sit in the garden on an evening. Loved it. Thank you.

May 2022

Beautiful property and location, will definitely be wanting to return.

October 2021

An excellent stay, helped by great warm and sunny weather! A great position to stay in South Devon, easy journeys into Dartmouth, Brixham, Paignton and Kingsbridge. Totnes for shopping, Berry Pomeroy Castle, National Trust sites at Greenways and Coleton Fishacre. Castle Drogo on way in. Dartmoor, Widdecombe, Bovey Tracey House of Marbles, always fun! Berry Head for the breeze and view, the Brixham Breakwater for exercise. Can't wait to come back. Cheers, thanks.

September 2021

It's in a great location and the outside space is just right (especially when you compare it with neighboroughing houses). Everything we needed was included. We were very comfortable

September 2021

Many thanks!

August 2021

Really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cottage. We have enjoyed the South West Devon coastal path, visiting Agatha Christies house 'Greenway' and an exciting visit to Burgh Island, almost caught out by the tide!

July 2021

This is our second stay at the Hideaway and we are back again in October! Fab location for visiting local beaches; would recommend Bantham, Mill Bay & Thurlestone. The Cott Inn serves lovely food, has lovely staff and great atmosphere.

July 2021

Beds were of excellent quality, so great nights sleep. Lounge furniture needed pillows to sit on for comfort. Well fitted kitchen but wooden worktops need replacing as they are permanently sticky even after cleaning.

Thank you so much for your feedback and we are delighted to hear that you had a lovely time in the cottage and slept well during your stay. We have passed on your comments to the owners who have confirmed that they are having the worktops professionally sanded and re-sealed as they too have found them to feel a bit sticky despite being clean. We look forward to welcoming you back to Hideaway again soon!

July 2021

Enjoyed out stay. Good quality beds, had great nights sleep. Had a nice fish and chip lunch at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel, Totnes. Very nice cream tea at the Berry Pomeroy Castle where the log fire was very welcome on a cold and wet July 4th. We found Buckfast Abbey to be a very calm and relaxing place. Would recommend the bacon baps and large double cooked chips in the Abbey cafe.

June 2021

Very well equipped house, you seem to have thought of everything. We have been so lucky with the weather & have had some lovely walks plus the steam train. Ferry & paddlesteamer was just great. A lovely week - pity no pub in the village.

April 2021

It was well equipped, even store cupboard essentials provided. Only problem was stairs, i did take a tumble on them one day

April 2021

All great, nice break, thanks very much.

October 2020

We loved it. We were a bit taken aback that the local pub had shut down as we were looking forward to walking down there in the evenings with the dogs but we soon got the hang of the great bus service and taxis. The information book in the cottage was really useful

August 2020

Enjoyed my week in The Hideaway very much and would recommend it very highly. Hope to make a return visit.

July 2019

I cant think of anything we could have wanted that the cottage didn't already have. The facilities and equipment provided were excellent - a real home from home.

This was a most wonderful cottage in a great location. Well done to the owners and caretaker. We will return.

October 2018

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hideaway cottage. One minor point is that there was no bottle of wine on arrival.

August 2018

It was very comfortable at Hideaway- it suited us well for easy access to Dartington for the summer school and Dartmouth too. The garden was great for our dog. There was little on the doorstep in the way of walks though so it did involve daily drives. A good choice overall

Great stay. We were concerned that the gate handle fell off, so we left a note for the caretaker. Really well equipped and lovely furnishings.

Sorry you had that problem with the gate handle, but thanks for letting us know. It's being repaired. Delighted you enjoyed your stay.

April 2017

Lovely cottage. Nothing much to do in immediate vicinity to cottage but convenient location for driving to local towns/attractions. Rooms and decor were up to a good standard and kitchen well equipped with everything you could need. The small enclosed garden was also great for the dog. Would have liked a blind to the bathroom window - felt a little exposed to overlooking properties when showering with light and extractor fan on! Overall though, a nice and comfy base for exploring South Devon.

February 2017

Lovely place in a really nice area. Very comfortable and very well equipped. We hope we can return and enjoy Hideaway again :-)

July 2016

We stayed her with our 9 month old Puppy, the cottage is home from home (and more) we didn't want to leave, it has everything you need and a perfect base. The garden is small and enclosed and we enjoyed sitting out morning and evening listening to the birds. The cottage is spotlessly clean and the kitchen is extremely well equippped with everything you need. Everywhere we planned to visit was within 20 - 30 min drive (you do need a car!) This part of Devon is beautiful, I particularly enjoyed Dartmouth! Enjoy the walk from Slapton Sands to Beesands and walk back along the beach if the tide is out! Thank you for a most enjoyable stay.

November 2015

We had a lovely stay in this well equipped cottage. We really appreciated all the attention to detail, the high spec and tasteful decor and furnishings! A great location, sunny garden area and a surprisingly well stocked village shop. We hope to return.

November 2015

A lovely cottage with everything we needed. Everywhere was tidy and clean and very new! Thanks for the wine and biscuits. We will recommend to all our friends and family.

November 2015

Lovely cottage, well equipped and we loved the wood burner. Enjoyed Bigbury on sea, crabbing at Dittisham and Dartmouth, Salcombe, Beesands as well as all the dog friendly beaches.

November 2015

Delightful cottage. Enjoyed it very much as a base for Dartmoor and the coast. We will definitely return again.
