There are also plenty of beauty spots nearby, including the Lydford Gorge, Burrator Reservoir and the historic Buckland Abbey.   Horse Riding is also available at the highly regarded nearby Cholwell Riding Stables which is either a 7-minute drive away or a 30-minute direct off-road walk across the beautiful moor.

Tavistock, just 4 miles from the cottage, is one of the five Stannary towns of Dartmoor and offers plenty of amenities including cafes, shops, pubs, restaurants and supermarkets.

Whitsand Bay
(19 miles)

A 3 mile stretch of perfect sand located between Rame Head and Portwrinkle, this is possibly one of the best beaches in this part of Cornwall. It is worth noting though that there are dangerous rip currents, and although there is lifeguard cover May-September, swimming here can be dangerous.  Access to the beach is via steep cliff paths, unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushcharis from car parks at either end. The easiest access is from the car park near Tregantle Fort leading to Long Sands beach. The other car park is located near Sharrow Point and leads down to Freathy and Tregonhawke Beach.  Dog allowed all year round.

Lovely helpful hosts We had a wonderful stay at Little Place and enjoyed being able to access the moor so easily from the property. The weather was really good to us so we could really enjoy the outdoor space and the beautiful garden. Tavistock is about a 10 minute drive away and has some lovely shops and good choice of supermarkets. We will be back again !!

October 2022

A great holiday. Friendly owners who made us feel very welcome.

August 2022

Had a fantastic hiking week here, walks on the doorstep, saw a kingfisher in the local river Tavy as well as lots of wildlife on the moors. I'm just sad I can't continue to add to my tor's climbed checklist. A hack with with the local riding school, wild swimming, catch a sunset on top of Cox Tor and Brent tor church. Lovely little cottage and super hosts. Will definitely stay here again.

August 2022

Had a lovely time. Julia and Jock were fantastic hosts and enjoyed our visit. It was our 2nd visit and as a good as previous. Many thanks

May 2022

Wonderful stay. Perfect location for walking and riding on the moor. Very comfortable property and great welcome from the owners.

September 2021

Had a lovely welcome from Julia, who owns the Cottage, she told us about the area, where to eat and showed us around a spotless, cleanest place we’ve stayed in so far. Slept so well, the bedding and bed was so comfortable. Very relaxing week away. Went to Tavistock, Princetown, Lydford Gorge and Padstow and did some walking on Dartmoor which is on your doorstep. Said goodbye to Jock and Julia on Thursday evening, was lovely to see them as they left us alone, but was there if we needed them. Thank you for having us and for the goodies when we arrived which was really appreciated.

September 2021

Our host were lovely people and made us very welcome, they were so helpful which made our week perfect, highly recommended.

July 2021

Thank you so much Jock and Julia for a wonderful week away - you couldn't have made us feel more welcome - it was such a pleasure to meet you both (and Stanley!) - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and didn't want to leave! Little Place is a lovely cottage set in beautiful gardens right on the edge of Dartmoor. The cottage has everything you need for a restful, relaxing stay and was spotlessly clean. I have never slept so well being away from home. The views are amazing and it is so peaceful - it is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Tavistock is also a great little town with supermarkets, restaurants and some lovely independent homeware shops (Cabana Interiors and Tillius Lifestyle). There is also a craft beer shop called Too Hoppy that has a great selection of beers, lagers and ciders. Restaurant wise we can recommend Taylors and Church Lane for breakfast and The Cornish Arms for dinner. The local pub, The Mary Tavy Inn is also a short walk away from the cottage. Little Place is also a great base to explore both Devon & neighbouring Cornwall.

July 2021

Fantastic property, well maintained and one of the cleanest we’ve ever stayed in. Although on owner’s property they are not intrusive but very friendly and informative and generous with the welcome gift. Little Place is great for walkers as the gate to the moor is literally at the end of the drive, we used the car twice and only for short trips as there are many places really close at hand. Unusually for us we would definitely make a return visit as the location is super convenient for Dartmoor. Highly recommend this property. First time booking with Toad Hall will use again.

June 2021

Lovely place. First class. Julia is an excellent host and all the little extras, like the scones and the chocolates were very much appreciated. Felt spoilt. Would highly recommend.

June 2021

Little place is a wonderful, peaceful place to stay. It is fantastic to be able to walk straight up onto the moors. The accommodation is very comfortable and surrounded by the owners' beautiful garden. The owners were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Fabulous break and longing to get back.

November 2020

Very peaceful stay at a lovely cottage. Great access to the moor. Well equipped and thoughtful touches. Highly recommended.

October 2020

We had a lovely stay at Little Place. Julia was there waiting for us when we arrived and she gave us a warm welcome and tour of the cottage. The furnishings are lovely and really suit the country feel being light and modern with a hint of pine. The whole place was pristine and we had no concerns at all about Covid. The gardens were lovely and we enjoyed the view from the pretty seating area. The location is great for walking and enjoying Dartmoor. Lovely welcome gifts of coffee and biscuits too.

August 2020

We really enjoyed our stay - Julia and Jock made us very welcome. The location was very quiet and peaceful, and an ideal base for a holiday in Dartmoor.

July 2020

Julia and Jock were lovely - extremely friendly and welcoming, even though we unfortunately had to delay our arrival at the last minute. The welcome gifts were a lovely touch. The property was spotlessly clean and in a great location. We were completely reassured by their preparations with regards to COVID cleanliness and requirements. We really enjoyed staying here and would definitely recommend it to others.
