Visitors love this beautiful, Georgian market town that’s also a popular sailing resort. Lymington boasts three marinas and was the training ground for local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, you can see the golden letter box at the bottom of the high street, painted in recognition of his success with a fifth Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Lymington is one of the largest towns in the New Forest and has a key role in the life of the area. This charming town is packed full of history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and is an important port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent. Human habitation in the Lymington area dates back to the Iron Age, and a 6th Century BC hill fort known locally as Buckland Rings can still be seen today. As with many other towns and villages in the area, Lymington thrived during the Norman Conquest, thanks to its key location on the south coast.

If you want to leave your car at home and come by train, Lymington Rail line is a branch off the main Waterloo to Weymouth line. Once here, you’ll find regular buses with stops all over the New Forest and coastline.

There are lots of places to walk and amble in and around Lymington, these include characterful cobbled streets leading down to the town quay and harbour – a great place to relax and watch harbour life - fishing boats land their haul, yachts and leisure boats coming in and out.

There are lots of town events, activities and day trips from Lymington including fishing trips, boat and sailing charters, canoeing and kayaking, diving trips, mini cruises and ferry over to the Isle of Wight with your car or as a foot passenger.

Saturdays in the high street are a hive of activity, with a weekly street market selling everything from plants, clothes and household goods to home-made cakes, fruit and veg and a whole lot more. Shopping is great with a high street brands mixed with an interesting and eclectic mix of independent retailers and boutiques. There are a few supermarkets and specialist food shops for provisions to take back to your cottage, including one that makes their own home-made dishes and desserts and freezes them.

Lymington also has a number of really good eateries in and around the town, with the main concentration being around the high street. Lanes of Lymington serves superb food and also runs a cookery school. The Elderflower, whose chef/proprietor hails from the famous 5* Chewton Glen Hotel is superb.

During the warmer months you can relax in the bandstand gardens and enjoy some free musical entertainment. A few minutes’ further on are Lymington Sea Water Baths, the oldest of their kind in the UK, dating back to 1833. A short walk further on is the start of Keyhaven Nature Reserve. Well worth going to if you like birds, wildlife and natural beauty complimented with wonderful views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

May 2023

Great place to have lunch or just a cuppa when visiting the shops of Lymington.

July 2022

Great place to eat, Had Ham, egg and chips and a pint of shandy lager and paid £6-20. Great service, great food which was hot and freshy cooked.

August 2019

A well run Wetherspoons pub, light and airy unlike some of them! good value food and drink, pleasant staff and the food comes in good time, staff around clearing tables and keeping the place tidy.

May 2019

You know what to expect at Wetherspoons, one of the nicer ones we've been to, good selection of real ales.

May 2019

Wonderful Wetherspoons. We ate here often - catered for small appetites, food cooked well and quickly, prices very reasonable, staff helpful.

July 2018

Cheap and cheerful, friendly staff. You get what you pay for.

The Angel & Blue Pig
(Less than a mile)

(13)

A stylish and elegant gastro pub on the high street, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Lots of wooden beams, bare brick walls, large fire place and pretty soft furnishings - there’s also outside seating. The Angel and Blue Pig specialize in steaks, which receive great reviews. The main menu changes each month and is supplemented by daily specials. All the dishes are creative, varied and beautifully presented. A delightful spot for a drink or bite to eat.

September 2023

Fabulous location in the heart of the shopping area, nice and quiet on the day we visited. Lovely comfortable decor and seating with plenty of space.

June 2023

Great steak and good service

July 2021

A decent pub serving decent food at a decent price. I very much enjoyed the meal, shame about the flat beer.

July 2021

Nice pub in the centre of Lymington, food was lovely, shame there wasn't any cask ales - we visited this pub for lunch on the basis of the Good Pub Guide.

May 2021

Good food and service

September 2020

Friendly staff, good food, comfortable surroundings

August 2020

Very disappointing. So much so that I submitted a complaint to customer service via email and the response was very unsatisfactory too! My advice would be to avoid.

November 2019

Visited this pub whilst on holiday. My wife and I had the intention of eating there, although we had not booked. We ordered 2 drinks (beer) which I could not drink at all. I took them back to the bar with the intention of asking them to be replaced. I waited for 15 minutes. During this time the 2 bar staff who were on duty walked past several times whilst serving other customers. Neither showed any interest in finding out what my problem was or that they knew I was there. In the end I left the beer on the bar and walked out. I have visited Lymington several times in the past and hope to holiday there again in the future, but I will never go into this place again.

May 2019

Very disappointing and long delay in seating us on arrival despite having a reservation.

January 2018

We loved this pub! We went with the kids for a quick drink around lunchtime and then came back in the evening without the kids. Great atmosphere, well furnished, and great drinks on offer. The menu looked fantastic too, however, we didn't get to sample it! We'll definitely go again if we return to Lymington.

July 2017

Perfect for lunch. They have a £6 lunchtime menu which offers excellent value for money. I had the wild mushroom linguine. Delicious and good sized portion. My husband had the burger which comes with fries and homemade ketchup. Staff are friendly and chatty too which is nice.

The Kings Arms
(Less than a mile)

(4)

An atmospheric, former coaching inn dating back to the 17th century in the centre of Lymington with a pleasant beer garden. A regular stop for locals to have a drink, the Kings Arms serves good, honest pub food from a friendly crew of staff. The pub maybe historic, yet entertainment is very much twenty first century, with a regular and varied selection of live music, DJ, quiz nights and TV sports events.

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

September 2023

Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.

August 2022

A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries

May 2022

Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

October 2021

Well worth spending a morning learning about the history of Lymington and the wider New Forest area. There is always an interesting pop up exhibition too. The cafe is great and serves lovely home made food.

Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

April 2024

Thank you for the loan of your lovely house. We had a lovely week and really enjoyed our Easter Eggs and the bubbles. Our daughter wanted to say how much she loved the bunk beds. Top bunk for living, bottom for sleeping! We also loved the pod every night , great fun. With slightly dodgy weather we also made good use of games we hadn't played for years. Having a 7yr old beat a 77yr old at Mastermind was not so good! Thank you again.

April 2024

We've had such a wonderful stay at 'Seas the Day' and cannot thank you enough for the loan of your beautiful house and kindness.

April 2024

Thank you so much for our very comfortable stay at Seas the Day, you seemed to have thought of everything. Thank you for the lovely anniversary card and your generous gifts, its so kind and thoughtful of you. There is a lot to see and do in this part of the country and the New Forest is spectacular. All three generations of us have enjoyed our week here. Once again, thank you very much.

April 2024

Thank you for our amazing stay at Seas the Day. We absolutely loved the sea themed decorations and the attention to detail. Our welcome hamper was so thoughtful. The house has felt like a wonderful home from home, we couldn't wish for anything more. Having the pod was a dream. It was really fun playing board games in there, even more so when I won! Thank you also for the fab inspirations for places to visit - Beaulieu was (surprisingly) interesting and we enjoyed the monorail as well. We cannot wait to visit again.

Amazing house, high quality furnishing, very comfortable beds, great TV, super well equipped kitchen, location suited our family of mixed ages as they could walk into Lymington. We all enjoyed staying in your lovely house with its sea theme, all very comfortable and a home from home. Thank you for decorating the house for us and especially for adding a present for our granddaughter, she was delighted. That and the goody bag was a nice touch and added to our enjoyment Thank you.

September 2023

We have had a great stay in Seas The Day and have thoroughly enjoyed the time. It was lovely that after going out, we could look forward to returning and playing some of the multitude of games varying between the ages of 3 to some for adults. It was an amazing surprise when I saw the ice cream voucher which was a delicious treat. The cabin in the back is really nice and we used it a bit like an office where we would go to escape. Thank you for an incredible stay. - (Sophia aged 10) Dear Tracy and Robert, thank you very much for all the thought that went into the beautiful welcome pack and all the attention to detail that made for such a wonderful stay.

August 2023

Yes, we all enjoyed 'Seas the Day' and found it an extremely well-appointed property or, to quote the youngest member of our party (4 next month): "a really lovely house".

August 2023

We have all very much enjoyed your beautifully appointed house. From the welcome pack to the outdoor equipment, board games and amazing television (very much in demand with the Woman's Football World Cup!). The range of games appealed to all the children, and made good use of the crabbing buckets/ nets and delicious ice creams from Toots Sweets. Thank you for looking after us so well and we would definitely like to return to Seas The Day in the future.

August 2023

A lovely holiday home. Excellent location so close to the town, the harbour etc. But mainly- WOW!- so well appointed and equipped. We've loved the pod. Hadn't realised that it was here so a great bonus and its made every evening a laugh playing board games out there in the rain and wind amidst the sparkly lights. Very much enjoyed our stay. The position was perfect, can easily walk into town and into the harbour and around the sea wall. The owners went above and beyond making our stay as comfortable as possible. Couldn’t ask for anything more.

This is certainly an amazing house and we had a fantastic holiday, certainly the weather was great which helped. The hosts supplied everything you could possibly need, even down to beach chairs and towels. Loved the welcome pack and all the thoughtful touches you suddenly find. We really hope we can return again, the house and the location make it so attractive. Thank you Tracey and Robert.

Wow, we have absolutely loved every minute of our stay here. We are 2 families with young children and literally everything has been catered for (and more). We've stayed in many houses over the years and this is by far THE BEST! Can't wait to return and make more memories with our boys. We went to Christchurch Beach, Peppa Pig world, New Forest walks and its all been fab. Also wanted to note how clean the property was and how brilliant the owners have been. Such a fantastic welcome basket too- even the little ones were included- so lovely!

Amazing property for a special family holiday. Lovely to witness King Charles III Coronation all together- very thoughtful themed welcome pack was much apricated. We were able to make use of the pod and the garden furniture. Great location, visited New Forest, Bournemouth, and Isle of Wight with lots of places in-between. Property had so many thoughtful touches which meant we had a very comfortable stay- Loved it all.

Really enjoyed our week in Seas The Day. The property is tastefully and practically furnished with lovely decor, thoughtful touches such as cosy throws in the sitting room and laundry baskets in all the bed rooms and some quirky features which made us smile. Very well appointed kitchen with plenty of good quality china and glasses etc, the oven was spotless, big fridge (with another beer fridge in the pod) was plenty of us 6 adults. Outside space is probably the best we've seen, beautifully kept, nice garden furniture and a pod with heating (which was great as the weather wasn't very good !). Fabulous welcome hamper themed for King Charles III Coronation, again very thoughtful. Location is great, parking for 2 cars and a short walk into town. We were out and about everyday and visits included Beaulieu and the Isle of Wight. Had a meal in the Six Bells which was good and morning coffee at Stanwell House. Overall this was one of the nicest properties we've stayed in, Host Tracy is super friendly and very helpful - can highly recommend.
