The Old Dairy boasts a most convenient location in the heart of the glistening South Hams, ideal for spending lazy days at one of the local beaches nearby or exploring the surrounding rolling countryside.

This homely, reverse-level barn conversion stands amongst a small group of restored former farm buildings with the picturesque Dartmoor hills in the distance.  The property welcomes one small to medium dog and boasts a large garden with lovely views and an outdoor patio area accessed directly from the kitchen - furnished with a picnic bench perfect for that al fresco breakfast or dinner! The farmhouse-style kitchen diner is very well-equipped and the lounge, also on the first floor, is charming with its characterful scissor-beams and large feature window.

Perfect for couples, friends or families, the location offers endless opportunities for exploration!  The waterside market town of Kingsbridge is just 5 miles away, with the bohemian town of Totnes and the Naval sailing town of Dartmouth both 8 miles away.

For lovers of the outdoors there is so much virtually on the doorstep with numerous stretches of sandy beaches and craggy coastal walks to explore, and the vast wild expanse of Dartmoor within easy reach by car.

The Old Dairy offers a welcoming home and a fantastic base for a holiday at any time of year.

Please note if you have received the benefit of a reduced occupancy discount, only the master bedroom will be made up.

Front door into hallway

Stairs rise to the first floor to the airy beamed lounge with two sofas, occasional chair, music centre with CD, TV and DVD.

Spacious dining kitchen with central dining table to comfortably seat six and large doors open onto a picnic patio and gardens beyond.

The farmhouse-style kitchen is well equipped with a dual-fuel range cooker with 7 gas ring hobs, grill and double oven functions, microwave, large fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.

Shower room with shower, wash basin and WC.

Ground floor with three bedrooms each with pleasant outlooks over a communal grassed courtyard area.

Master bedroom with 5ft king bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers.

Bedroom two with 3ft single bed and secondary 3ft truckle bed (which raises from floor level) to create a twin room upon request at the time of booking, wardrobe and desk.

Bedroom three with 3ft single bed, open hanging and chest of drawers.

Family bathroom with bath with hand shower, wash basin and WC.

Terraced sunny enclosed (to around a 3ft height) garden with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.  A paved patio outside the kitchen doors is equipped with a large wooden picnic bench.  Steps lead up to level grassed garden area and decking with loungers.  A path bordered with grass and mature flower beds leads down to the parking area.

East Allington is a small but lively village served by The Fortescue Arms pub, with its lovely cottage garden in the summer and welcoming open fires in the winter. It was in the village church, in 1943, that the local people of East Allington and the surrounding area were told they were to be evacuated. The evacuation involved around 3000 people including entire farmsteads and all their animals. At the time people were kept in the dark about why, however it was because the nearby beach at Slapton Sands had been chosen by the War Office as a site for the troops to rehearse the D-Day landings. This was known as “Exercise Tiger” and sadly in a tragic twist, the rehearsing troops came under a surprise attack which resulted in the loss of 749 American soldiers in a single night.

The village is just 3 miles from the pretty market town of Kingsbridge, set at the head of the Kingsbridge/Salcombe estuary. The town has an array of shops, pubs, cafés, a cinema plus two supermarkets, so it’s the perfect place for stocking up on groceries, gifts and treats.

There’s also a choice of nearby beaches, including the 3 mile long, Slapton Sands at Torcross, the picturesque Blackpool Sands and the popular surf spots of Bigbury-on-Sea and Bantham.  It’s also worth taking a drive along the dramatic coastal road from Torcross to the historic naval town of Dartmouth, or spending the day in nearby Totnes to experience its regular food and flea markets.

A holiday cottage in East Allington is perfectly situated to make the most of your stay in the beautiful South Hams.

For two cars.  One designated parking space beside the property and an additional space in a communal parking area up the slope past the house.

March 2023

Great pub with a welcoming landlord, fab steaks!

June 2021

We had dinner at the New Inn on our first night staying at nearby Preston House Cottage. We prebooked a table as when we had been before it was very busy. We had a lovely table in the dining area past the bar which only has 4 tables and a lovely roaring fire. We were able to take our dog in this area too. The food was lovely and portions huge! There didn’t appear to be a highchair (we weren’t offered one for our toddler), but I had a portable booster seat in the car. The other issue was no baby changing facilities so we had to change him either on the floor in the toilets or on the toilet seat (very hard with a wriggling toddler). My husband went to change him at one point (as we share this responsibility) and the men’s toilets are outside so it was really cold. Couldn’t fault the atmosphere, food or staff though.

We had a very enjoyable Sunday roast and then went back for the pub quiz, great fun!

April 2024

Excellent Sunday lunch on Christmas Eve, a friendly and welcoming 'local'.

January 2024

We booked & were asked to pre-order as there were 8 of us. Very warm & friendly welcome, nice atmosphere. Good ,traditional pub food & excellent service. Really enjoyed the evening. Dog friendly, too. Excellent value. They do have a children's menu, too, though not on the website.

October 2023

Lovely pub with very good and reasonably priced Sunday roasts. Booking essential

September 2023

A lovely village pub with great food and friendly staff.

August 2023

We always visited this pub twice each time we stay in south devon. The owners are really delightful and they serve a very good meal, particularly sunday lunch. It retains it's village patronage which makes it even more special. A perfect place to eat and drink.

June 2023

We visited for an evening meal. The food was excellent. It is quite a small pub and seems to be quite popular. We went on a Wednesday evening in May and managed to get a table without a reservation but there wasn't much space left so it is probably best to reserve in advance. The landlady was quite friendly and we also got chatting to some of the locals.

June 2023

Adrian and Ian run a great pub with wonderful service and lovely food. if you get the chance go for Sunday lunch which is outstanding!

March 2023

Great food and close to Fallapit Estate meaning only a short walk.

Really good food, excellent service and great value for mone

July 2018

Really welcoming pub that fitted us in for Sunday lunch even though they were fully booked and it was a great lunch!

September 2017

The menu is a bit limited. There seemed to be a lot of varieties of pie and chips. As it happened the pie I chose was top notch. Just a shame that it didn't go with mash instead. I didn't ask if I could have that to be fair. Having a separate vegetarian menu was great.

September 2017

We had Sunday lunch here on Easter Sunday, it was delicious! My party of 7 eat out a lot, and are picky - I can thoroughly recommend this pub.

May 2017

Friendly atmosphere and food very good.

Lovely pub, but felt this October is was a bit 'shabby' and the food was a bit minimal compared to our other visits (the toilets were also a bit dirty).

October 2023

Good food. Friendly staff. Very convenient location over the road. Not too expensive.

October 2023

Booked by email and received confirmation email but no booking when we arrived. Had to eat in bar on sticky grubby table. Food good but damage was done - felt taken for a ride. Outside untidy uncared for - used to be better. Won’t be returning

Very nice garden centre and good cafe if looking for a place to eat. Just be aware it’s quite a steep hill to walk back up to Loddiswell, but you can also drive there.

April 2023

Lovely garden centre with good cafe. Does get busy at lunch time.

July 2022

Enjoyed our visits here, very nice, if a little expensive.

April 2022

Excellent catering, but let down by the range of plants. Perhaps due to the time of year ( early October and the effects of the pandemic ). Interesting range of crafts and gifts to browse.

October 2021

A lovely find. Nice cafe. Small garden centre with shops and lovely walks along the river

October 2021

Great food in the cafe and interesting craft shops to explore.

July 2021

Fantastic garden centre, and food was great. However needed to show clearer instructions on how to order.

July 2021

Lovely setting and friendly staff but the cafe did not cater well for vegans. Charged extra for jam on a teacake even though they had no dairy free spread to replace the butter. The lunches looked like they might be more vegan friendly and they are dog friendly though which is good

June 2021

Fantastic.

June 2021

Always a pleasure to visit here, cafe is fab!

May 2021

Slightly underwhelmed overall. Gallery was good. Covid restrictions did not help the cafe experience. Plants overpriced and limited.

October 2020

Great outdoor space, observing the C-19 regulations. Good menu. Soup was lovely but we didnt like the wooden spoons so took our own 2nd visit.

October 2020

Great place for a pit stop after walking down to the River Avon from Loddiswell - lovely coffee and cake!

Lovely garden centre with some additional shops. Enjoyed our Devon cream tea in the cafe - 2 scones par cream tea and the scones were large!

June 2017

Located in a lovely area. Reminiscent of other multi purpose garden centres although on a smaller scale. Cafe does very good scones.

May 2017

An upmarket garden centre with associated other 'outlets'. A very pleasant cash extraction facility, should you have an upmarket garden and/or excess cash.

April 2017

Nice food, very busy when we went and had to queue for a while. Nice conservatory room, definitely a good place for breakfasts or afternoon tea.

More style than substance - looks great but hardly any cider, very disappointing as expected to find lots of different varieties. But mainly a shop selling nice blankets and throws with a small cafe. Lovely outdoor space for tea and cake but that’s not why we went there hence the low score.

Don't expect Alton Towers- but if you want a great place to spend the day and keep the kids entertained, then this is the best there is in South Devon. I'd say better for 7-13s than anything over....

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(6 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded

August 2018

Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.

August 2017

Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .

August 2017

Slapton Sands
Slapton Sands
(7 miles)

(29)

A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!

Our dog loved this beach and the kiosk cafe was a great addition, especially as it was very cold and windy. Shame about the parking costs.

April 2024

Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view

August 2023

A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.

Visited here out of respect for those who practiced the D-Day landings on this beach. If venturing doen to the sea from the car park please note it was hard getting back up as you sink into the stones, so not so good for those with any mobility issues.

July 2023

Beautiful pebbly beach, water was so clear!

June 2023

Lovely beach with clear blue sea, very small shingle so no good if u have children who want to build a sand castle, also water gets deep very quickly

June 2023

Beautiful quiet unspoilt beach

April 2023

Really interesting history. Great for the children to link back to a Michael Morpurgo story too.

April 2022

loved it

November 2021

Long pebbly beach. Parking right on the front.

September 2021

We visited on a very overcast day with a keen wind blowing, so we did not see the sands at their best. We walked into Slapton and had tea in the church and found a pleasant footpath back to the beach car park, which ran past the nature reserve at Slapton Ley.

September 2021

A beautiful, gentle walk along the side of the nature reserve, if you make it to the turn off to go into Slapton, there is a lovely pub up there, the Queens Arms great gardens, food and friendly staff.

September 2021

Absolutely stunning stretch of beach (non-sandy which we prefer) with miles of space. Beautiful for early morning dog walks with a coffee at the end from the 'cafe on the beach' at Strete Gate picnic area.

May 2021

Walked along the beach and round the Nature reserve whilst staying in Slapton village. Lovely long shingle beach - our dog loved it. Lovely circular walk through the medieval village and back through the Nature reserve and along the beach.

November 2020

Ample parking, nice walk along the beach.

October 2020

Beautiful beach with a stunning sunrise. The sound of the sea on the pebbles is very relaxing. Really clean . No rubbish . Beautiful walks nearby. Nice cafe and restaurants. Dog friendly too.

September 2020

We have had lovely walks along Clapton and the views are stunning

February 2020

If you love the sound of the waves on pebbles this has to be one of the best beaches in the world !

April 2019

A totally unspoilt stretch of beach with wild flowers and wonderfully coloured rocks. We were lucky to be staying on a stones throw away and spent a few happy hours there with our dog watching the locals beach fishing in the evenings - bliss!

August 2018

Lovely walking -

June 2018

Lovely walk for wild flowers, bird watching sea views

May 2018

Clean beach.No plastic.

May 2018

This is certainly a lovely beach and so little rubbish.

April 2018

Really interesting area and good walks along the coast and by the Ley. Generous provision of toilets and parking and a number of places to eat. Would particularly recommend The Start Bay Inn, The Boathouse and Seabreeze Cafe at Torcross. Also very handy that there is a bus should you want to walk one way and get a bus back. Very beautiful and peaceful.

October 2017

Beautiful beach right across from our Cottage

September 2017

Wonderful nature reserve with well signposted walks.

September 2017

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach - dogs allowed all year. Not many facilities - we went to the Strete end of the beach as there is a great little coffee hut there - great coffee and friendly staff.

September 2017

Clapton Sands is beautiful. The rocks are the most beautiful colours, wild flowers abound on the beach, the views in either direction are stunning and it is rarely over crowded. One of the most wonderful areas in the U.K.

May 2017

Great place for a walk along the beach and had some great events for children at Easter. Great fish and chips in the pub at the end on Torcross

Beesands
Beesands
(8 miles)

(45)

Close to Kingsbridge and a favourite amongst residents and holiday makers in the South West, Beesands is a wonderful mile-long shingle beach surrounded by fields and a freshwater lake. You get a real flavour of the West Country here with fresh crab sandwiches for sale nearby and lots of Devon holiday cottages within walking distance to make it really convenient. The beach has won awards from the Marine Conservation Society as well as having The Blue Flag marker to attest to its excellence and high standards, so families and swimmers can be reassured. The beach is popular for surfing and body boarding amongst other water sports including fishing, so tackle is on sale close by. You can pick up light bites at nearby cafes as and when you’re ready, making it easy to spend the whole day running around on the sand and enjoying your seaside holiday to the max. Beesands is very much a beach for everyone thanks to its convenient location, easy and free road parking along most of the beach, level access, and the toilets, cafes and pubs close by. Dogs are also welcome on the beach throughout the year so the whole family can enjoy it!

September 2023

Stunning beach, fantastic sunset.

August 2023

Great place for an evening drink - beach not very suitable for children .

August 2023

We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.

August 2023

Friendly, quiet location and shingle beach. Nice beach walk to Torcross at low tide. Pub/restaurant and Britannia restaurant and takeaway were very good. Very narrow roads to Beesands from turning off main road, but enjoyable holiday

June 2023

Just lovely. Excellent food at Britannia on the beach and they also have an excellent takeaway

May 2023

Great beach.

September 2022

Pebble beach. Sea crystal clear

August 2022

Beautiful location, stunning views!

August 2022

Pleasant place to visit

July 2022

Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. We will be going back soon!

July 2022

Had a lovely walk. Beautiful setting.

June 2022

lovely location, enjoyed many morning walks along the beach, and caught 14 mackerel. The road access is not the best, drive slowly, you cannot do anything else, and hey who's in a rush on holiday

May 2022

Loved Beesands, we stayed in one of the cottages for a week and enjoyed the peace and quiet and strolling along the beach, very dog friendly to!

May 2022

loved it here

November 2021

Gorgeous stretch of beach - we loved finding pebbles to take home! The walks to Torcross and Hallsands and an absolute must for stunning views

October 2021

Lovely clean dog-friendly beach and an easy walk from Clover Cottage and over to Torcross too

September 2021

Lovely quiet and dog friendly beach with good facilities. Good place to walk from to nearby beaches.

July 2021

The actual usable beach is a fair walk from the village ( parking not allowed as the beach fronting the village no longer exists due to flood defences

June 2021

much less busy than most local beaches (because it is shingle) but great for kids above toddler age. lovely walks in both directions, eg to Torcross for chips or to Start Point for views. Easy parking and a good beach shack cafe and take away

June 2021

Nice village on the coast

May 2021

Lovely area and stay

May 2021

Accidentally burnt the garden table offered to pay as we had booked for 2021 for our honeymoon the owners accepted our offer but refused our stay for honeymoon said they were proud owners hey accidents happen we r nature adults n had to do alit of cleaning n change light bulbs in our arrival so thanks to the owners it completely messed up our honeymoon how selfish urn that's part of letting your cottage accidents happen n we did not have to offer to pay be warned don't damage anything

December 2020

14 Beesands is a great property. About 10 feet away from the beach/ sea wall. Pub 20 paces away. Lovely walks on the doorstep. Fabulous sunsets and seals swimming past. Who could ask for more. Well equipped cottage, very comfy beds cosy and warm

October 2020

The most wonderful little fishing village- narrow lanes on approach so drive carefully- but it's worth it. Lovely shingle beach and stunning views across Start Bay. Two great eateries- Britannia and The Cricket Inn are worth a visit. Beesands is just beautiful, I love it there.

September 2020

Amazing location right on the beach. We spent a week in Beesands and found the property to be perfect for our big group - plenty of space for everyone to relax and a very well appointed kitchen. Would highly recommend.

September 2020

Beautiful setting and lovely property decorated to a high standard, well equipped and perfect place for a getaway to peace and quiet. Short distance to the beach. Would definitely return. We had a super weekend at this property celebrating a family birthday

January 2020

Beautiful relaxing place to spend time.

November 2019

Lovely little beach, nice quiet location and free parking a bonus

August 2019

Worth the uphill/downhill walk along the coast path. Lovely spot.

August 2019

Easy to park, good food options. plenty of room for everyone.

August 2019

I love Beesands . The only sad thing is even more people have found out about it, 10 years since my last visit. Sadly the sea has removed the road handy for parking and is gradually eroding the cliff edges. Not as quiet as it used to be but the attractions of two nice eating places have probably increased the footfall.

June 2019

It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????

June 2019

I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!

October 2018

Bit scary driving down to the beach due to the narrow road but worth it when you got there. Had fish and chips and ate them on the tables that were provided while looking out to sea.

September 2018

Had a wonderful meal in the beach cafe .

July 2018

We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear, sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.

June 2018

Beautiful stoney beach with views of Start Point Lighthouse. Tasty fish and chips available, popular pub and public toilets.

June 2018

Lovely place, good food and very dog friendly :-)

March 2018

Britannia Fish - Great fish - always fresh and lovely family run business. A must for anyone who likes eating good fish!

May 2017

Ideal for quiet and peaceful holiday with two good restaurants both of which are dog friendly.

Sunny Cove
Sunny Cove
(8 miles)

(7)

Accessed either by boat, via a 10-minute walk through the woods from parking at Mill Bay, or a stroll from the Salcombe to East Portlemouth Ferry, Sunny Cove is a sandy beach which, as you might expect, catches the sun throughout the day, weather pending. It’s on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary opposite North Sands beach and Fort Charles, the ruined fortification that was originally constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the Kingsbridge Estuary against French and Spanish Pirates. It’s a relatively gentle spot for swimming and ideal for picnics, lazy summer afternoons, and reaching on kayaks and paddle boards from other nearby beaches as well as being the perfect spot for building sandcastles. That said, the tide can come in quite quickly so make sure you don’t get caught out and be careful of the swell when bringing boats into the beach. Head there for the day in the summer or as a stop off en route to the café at Gara Rock or a longer walk along the coast path towards Prawle Point. Dogs are welcome all year round but keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities in the immediate vicinity (it would be a 10-15-minute walk along wooded footpaths) so take your sandwiches with you!

Stunning bay ,Quiet and secluded

October 2021

Lovely little beach worth the walk or paddle!

July 2021

We didn’t know about this. Whilst appreciating the need to keep things to a minimum, local information like this could have been uploaded digitally. We made 2 attempts to locate a beach without success.

October 2020

The beach and the views were superb

September 2019

A nice sandy beach, crowded on a sunny day. but access quite tricky - a long walk for children if no room in the NT car park, and then a long walk back afterwards.

August 2019

Best reached by direct boat access but easy enough walk from ferry or mill bay car park. Our favourite beach.

August 2018

Leas Foot Sands
Leas Foot Sands
(8 miles)

(8)

A small sandy beach belonging to Thurlestone Golf Club, those who have been on regular Devon weekend breaks and holidays will have seen this beach change somewhat in recent years thanks to storm damage, but the evolving landscape merely adds to its charm. A 200-metre walk down a paved path from the golf club and its car park and you find yourself heading down a gentle slope onto the sand, with the option of enjoying the beach in its own right or walking along the coast in either direction towards Bantham or South Milton Sands. Dogs are allowed here at any time, which of course adds to the appeal for walkers, and if you fancy stopping somewhere for lunch then Thurlestone village nearby is home to a charming pub that’s cryptically named The Village Inn, which is suitable for the whole family and wonderfully cosy in the winter months. Alternatively head to the Beachhouse café at South Milton for lunches and evenings meals with a view of the sunset, or cups of tea and brownies from the Gastrobus at Bantham. It is one of the area’s quieter beaches, often acting as a place to wander past rather than one to spend the whole day on, but given its easy access and the proximity of the car park, and the golf club, it’s a delightful little spot in which to while away the afternoon.

We visited this beach most days either morning or early evening to take the dog and enjoy the sunsets

September 2021

We found this to be a very pleasant spot for a coffee. The sands were pristine.

September 2021

Lovely beach for swimming and supping

June 2021

a fabulous beach, dog and heart friendly

December 2020

We like this beach. We walk to it from the property we stay in in Thurlestone. It's always quiet. There are lovely views out to sea and you really feel close to nature when swimming. There is good sand, some rocks on either side of the beach, it's easy to access and we usually walk home along the coast path for more lovely views.

August 2019

Great quiet beach with wonderful coastal walk alongside gold course round to Bantham. Parked free in field adjacent to golf club, although we understand they will be charging for parking soon. Only downside was that the public toilets were closed - we went October 2018.

November 2018

This is possibly the best beach in the whole of England

July 2017

A very nice beach with quite a lot of sand at times. So easy to access, even managed to get both (octogenarian) parents to it and my mother in the sea for a paddle!

August 2022

Our third stay at this great cottage! As always, we had a wonderful time and the weather was beautiful allowing us some great beach days at Salcombe, North Sands and Bantham. The great Roast at the Sportsman's Arms and our annual trip to Anchorstone Cafe in Dittisham did not disappoint. Loved being able to enjoy the garden - al fresco dining, playing and sitting in the sun. Thanks again and I'm sure we'll be back!

July 2022

Very delightful and comfortable spacious home with a lovely garden. Very peaceful, just what we needed. Enjoyed visiting the area, including lovely beaches. Weather very hot, so it was a bonus! We will be back.

June 2022

Thoroughly enjoyed stay, it is a super property and garden is ideal for dogs and their owners to relax in. Property is in a great location but you definitely need a car to get out and about from this property. Neighbours are lovely and seems all neighbours are permanent residents, so might be worth mentioning in the arrival notes to respect them, particularly when it comes to parking considerately. Just on parking might also be worth mentioning in the notes that the space next to the front door parking space for The Old Dairy, is used by one of the other residents as we weren’t sure if they were allowed to park there or not.

June 2022

We will hope to book it again.

June 2022

Lovely week at the Old Dairy. Plenty of places to explore. Garden ideal for the dog and nice to relax on the decking at the end of the day.

Lovely accommodation in a wonderful spot. Weather has been fantastic.

May 2021

My partner and I were gifted a fantastic 7 day break at The Old Dairy in Devon by the charity ‘Something To Look Forward To’ for people affected by cancer. What a beautiful slice of Devon perfection it was. The holiday home was beautiful and provided a wonderful base to explore the stunning area. We would never have been able to hire a place like the Old Dairy in this location, so it was the biggest treat for us. This holiday has allowed us to focus such valuable time on each other without the interruption of work, or the call of jobs that need doing on the house and of course my diagnosis. We cannot thank you enough. We feel so happy to have found this amazing charity and to have benefited from such a wonderful gift.

May 2021

Another lovely week at "Chill-Out" Barn! Fresh air and comfort as always.

December 2020

October 2020

We had a lovely week away - thank you.

September 2020

We really enjoyed our stay. The property is in an ideal location close to Kingsbridge for nipping in for provisions and some lanes/paths from the house to briefly walk the dog first thing in the morning. Any good walks and beaches a drive away though, which we knew would be the case and was fine for us. Great night sky and very quiet location. We all slept really well.

September 2020

We had a great time and the property was just right for us, we did feel that the bedroom was a bit either damp or dusty so tried to air as much as we could.

September 2020

Very much Lovely garden with different seating areas. Photos don’t do it justice. Resident neighbours very pleasant.

Charming garden and views, so quiet. Good walking - escape from Covid cares. We've had a great week!

August 2020

Comfortable stay with plenty of space and accommodation had everything we needed. Quiet at night and lots of interesting things to do within easy driving distance, but would personally prefer to stay somewhere with walks on doorstep as had to drive everywhere. Thank you Toad Hall - we always have a good experience staying in your cottages.

We've had a terrific week of lovely walks in stunning scenery and big waves! Thank you for a comfortable stay.

June 2019

It's hard to leave! We've had a wonderful week here in The Old Dairy and the sun has smiled on us too. We appreciated the comfort of it; the art on the walls; the books; the sunny spots in the mornings and evenings; having sunny breakfasts or suppers outside. We wanted for nothing here and it was lovely to get home to in the evenings.

June 2019

Stayed in May 2019 - A wonderfully restorative time in a beautiful house in a beautiful area of the country.

August 2018

Loved our stay, a great weeks holiday.

September 2017

Everything was great. Weather could have been better ????. Mrs Farrar the owner was unbelievably helpful and I will always be grateful to her.

July 2017

We had a wonderful stay at The Old Dairy. The property is spotless and exceptionally well equipped. Having the bedrooms downstairs has an advantage that they tend to stay cool in the hot days we experienced. Superb kitchen and access from there to peaceful gardens. The Dairy itself is set in a very peaceful location - we really enjoyed the tranquility. However it is perfectly located as a base to explore all of the South Hams. We had Kingsbridge and Salcombe a few miles south, Dartmouth a few miles west, Totnes a few miles north and Bantham beach and Bigbury on sea a few miles east. Really could not be in a better location. An extra bonus was a great selection of books to help pass away the time, totally recommend this property. (July 2017)

August 2016

This has been our 4th stay at Chilli Barns and it never disappoints! It is so easy to relax and enjoy the property, garden and surrounding countryside. It is very well situated with easy access to Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Burgh Island and many more lovely places. We will be back!

August 2016

We had a wonderful stay in East Allington. The Old Dairy is beautifully renovated, very clean and tastefully decorated, providing comfortable accommodation in a peaceful and charming rural setting. The living area is airy and spacious, the kitchen is extremely well equipped and the beds are comfy. We had a superb break and I would definitely go again.

July 2016

A delightful stay in comfortable and tranquil surroundings. The top floor of the Old Dairy offers ample space for socialising and relaxing, with its high ceilings, beautifully furnished lounge area (full of books, maps, local information and even a piano!) and well-appointed kitchen, which in turn opens onto a multi-level garden with terrace, picnic bench and herb plot. We spent several hours here watching the sun set over the fields that stretch away from the property in all directions. The bathrooms are spotless and the bedrooms comfortable, with plenty of nooks for storage; the master bedroom, with its handsome wall furnishings, is particularly characterful. I slept more deeply at the Old Dairy than I have for some time, and would hugely welcome the opportunity to visit again.

July 2016

I took a couple of my friends, my daughter and her friend (both 14) down to stay at this delightful property on 8 July. The Old Daiy is superbly well equipped and feels like a (somewhat nicer and quieter) home from home. It's very comfortable with two bathrooms and a lovely big kitchen/dining room as well as a large and pretty living room on the upper level. The garden is really big and well tended, and one can even pick fresh herbs! I haven't slept so well in ages because it's just so quiet, and have come home feeling very relaxed and rested. There is plenty to do for all ages in this part of Devon, even if the weather isn't great. During our week it wasn't quite beach weather, although we did have a lot of sun between the clouds, so we spent time in Kingsbridge and Totnes (the Barn is between the two) as well as Dartington and Salcombe - all within a short drive and all delightful places to mooch around the independent shops as well as enjoy nice meals. I particularly recommend The Crab Shell in Kingsbridge - very broad choice on the menu and lovely location as well as staff. There is also a paddle boarding school just outside the restaurant so parents can sit on the terrace with a glass of something pleasant while the little darlings learn a cool new skill! We all loved our time at The Old Dairy and I won't hesitate to go again. I wholeheartedly recommend the place.

July 2016

Nestling in the heart of the countryside, yet only a short drive away from bustling towns and beautiful coastal locations, The Old Dairy is ideally situated for a busy, yet peaceful holiday. The converted barn is very tastefully decorated with three comfortable bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs, while upstairs is a large, very well equipped kitchen, a shower room and a spacious lounge, just great for relaxing after a day out and about. There is even a piano for those who want to sit down and play a tune or two. There is such a lot to see and do in this part of Devon, and there are some great pubs and restaurants too. My friends and I loved it here and would not hesitate to return.

I was very happy with the services provided by Toad Hall, the staff I spoke to over the phone were very helpful.
