5 of the Best Pub Lunches on Dartmoor

5 Lovely Dartmoor Pubs Fit for a Mother’s Day Lunch

Whisk your mum away this Mothering Sunday for an exhilarating walk across the magnificent wilds of Dartmoor, followed by a delicious pub lunch.

What better way for the whole family to celebrate this special day than escaping to Dartmoor to enjoy the spectacular views across the endless rolling hills and ancient wooded valleys.

Here are a handful of our favourite places for a pub lunch, all nestling in the heather-swathed folds of Dartmoor…

The Royal Oak, Meavy

Voted ‘Country Pub of the Year’, The Royal Oak is everything you’d expect from a traditional, rustic pub and more. This popular moorland pub lies in the idyllic rural village of Meavy on the south-western fringes of Dartmoor, tucked away in the River Meavy valley. The pub is reputedly named after the 800-year-old oak tree casting its dappled shade on the adjacent village green – a popular reclining spot for punters. This former church house inn dates back to the 15th century and still retains much of its original character; low beam ceilings, old stone fireplace, reclaimed pew seating and flagstone floors. Surrounded by wonderful woodland walks, this gorgeous venue makes for the perfect Mother’s Day lunch date.

The Rock Inn, Haytor

On the eastern edge of Dartmoor in the enchanting moorland village of Haytor Vale lies the much-loved wayfarers’ haunt, The Rock Inn. This former coaching inn has welcomed patrons across its well-trod threshold since the mid-eighteenth century. The log fire still roars heartily on those chilly evenings and the menu remains full of inviting local fayre – the pub having received double rosettes from the AA for its high standards of hospitality, while also sweeping the boards at The Good Pub Guide. This Mother’s Day why not head for the hills of Haytor for a refreshing walk and some breathtaking views before treating mum to a sumptuous lunch at one of Dartmoor’s favourite pubs. Children and dogs welcome.

The Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe-in-the-Moor

It’s one of the most iconic pubs on Dartmoor; a handsome, old stone tavern, draped by wisteria and tucked away down a quiet country lane. Step inside The Rugglestone Inn and you’ll experience a welcoming scene from a bygone age; a centuries old bar still bowed, knotted and blemished by the beer-soaked crescents of former yokel’s tankards. This cosy Dartmoor pub can be found in Widecombe-in-the-Moor – ‘Uncle Tom Cobley and all’ – in the wooded and heath-clad sweeps of east Dartmoor, close to the magnificent Becky Falls. It’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with this characterful inn – just read some of its glowing reviews. Encompassed by endless moorland walks, where better place for the family to gather for a homecooked Mother’s Day lunch than under The Rugglestone’s low beamed ceilings.

The Anchor Inn, Ugborough

Set in the South Devon village of Ugborough, on the sheep-grazed foothills of Dartmoor, is the The Anchor Inn. This wonderful village pub dates back to the 17th century and retains lots of its bygone features, complimented by tasteful and contemporary décor and splendid oak fittings. This much-loved pub boasts a hearty gastro menu, full of wholesome and seasonal dishes. Ugborough is a gateway to the moor so you’ll be able to pick up undulating footpaths bound for craggy tors and roaming heathlands. If you’re feeling adventurous, join the Two Moors Way as it wends round Butterdon Hill and deeper into the heart of Dartmoor’s magnificent wilderness, or perhaps you’d prefer a gentle saunter round the local primrose lanes that weave around the village. A lovely outing and treat for Mother’s Day!
