Walking The Jurassic Coast

It’s easy to understand why the Jurassic Coast is high up on the list of the UK’s favourite walking destinations, adored by lovers of the great outdoors and all those who cherish their right to roam.

Described as a ‘walk through time’, the ancient Dorset cliffs are like mausoleums, keepers of the secrets of our ancient past, often revealing prehistoric fossils dating back millions of years.

This magnificent stretch of coastline plays host to a series of exhilarating walks, all with breathtaking views of Lyme Bay and taking in some of the area’s most cherished landmarks, such as the unmistakable limestone arch of Durdle Door or the chalky sea stacks of Old Harry Rocks.

People marvel at the sheer diversity of landscape that lays claim to this rare section of the peninsula; its secret coves and inlets, clifftop paths and sweeping views continue to beguile all those who visit. The Jurassic Coast also plays host to a myriad of wildlife, everything from the silver-studded blue butterfly to the spring green sand lizard.

Scientists have used the Jurassic Coast to help chart the history of the earth, reading between the layers of rock; a near complete record of the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods; a story of scolding deserts, rising sea levels, sprouting forests and teeming swamps that stretches 95 miles from Exmouth to Studland Bay.

The South West Coast Path takes in hundreds of miles of footpaths and bridleways and encompasses this magnificent stretch of coast from clifftop to shoreline.  The Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Jurassic Coast team have recently pooled together both their knowledge and resources to map out a series of short walks for everyone to enjoy.
