Tucked away in the winding streets that make up the ancient quarter of Totnes and in the shadow of the church, is this truly delightful and tastefully furnished cottage. Built into the original Saxon fortifications that surround Totnes castle, 4 Ramparts Walk has its origins in the Norman period, becoming a house during the late 17th century. This hideaway has a spacious lounge with a woodburner set in a stone fireplace, providing a cosy and relaxing environment in either winter or summer. A door from the lounge opens onto a secluded sunny walled garden, with brick paving, a host of pots adding splashes of colour and a wisteria climbing up the steps to the garden entrance. Two bedrooms accommodate up to 4 guests, with the master bedroom having wonderful views over the town. Totnes itself is an eclectic mixture of bohemian exuberance and traditional Devon market town, even possessing its own currency and it is easy to lose oneself for hours by meandering through the narrow streets. Each turn reveals another pleasant surprise, be it a traditional inn, a diverse range of restaurants or another small shop specialising in the unusual. We think that this is an ideal romantic retreat for couples or a comfortable base for a small family wishing to explore the delights and sandy beaches of this lovely area of Devon and we recommend it very highly.

Front door opens into the landing/hallway. Comfortable bedroom with a 4ft bed and large built in wardrobe with shelving. Adjacent to this is the double bedroom with a 4ft 6in bed with a cast iron bedstead, a small chest of drawers and double windows that flood the room with early morning light. The family bathroom is equipped with a bath (shower over with shower screen), hand basin and WC. Stairs lead down to the spacious, light and airy lounge/diner. The dining area has a large dresser and a dining table with seating for 6 that looks out to the courtyard. The lounge area has a 3 seater sofa, a cane chair, a Scandinavian reading chair, a woodburner stove, flat screen TV, DVD and radio. The well equipped galley kitchen at the end of the cottage has plenty of storage, a gas hob and oven, fridge and freezer, dishwasher, washer/dryer and microwave.

A pretty walled courtyard provides an ideal spot for early morning coffee whilst planning the day’s activities, a pleasant place to relax whilst reading, sipping that welcome aperitif or al fresco dining during the summer and has a garden table and chairs for 4 people. Stairs lead up to the garden entrance onto the walkway. The cottage is only approached by this pedestrian walkway.

Garage parking for one medium sized car approx. 200 yards from property, just past the Guildhall, so a very pleasant walk (please bear in mind that Totnes is built on a hill and so 100 yards of this walk is uphill). It is also possible to park a small car in front of the garage. Weekly parking permits for South Hams car parks available from the Tourist Information Centre, five minutes walk from cottage.

  • Included: Bed linen, towels, WiFi, travel cot, stair gate, high chair, 1 basket of firewood per booking, central heating (gas) and electricity.
  • Pets: Well behaved pets welcome by arrangement with the owners. Pet charge £25.00 per pet per week.
  • Telephone: For incoming calls and outgoing UK calls only. Mobile reception good.
  • Local Facilities: South coast beaches within half an hours drive. The beautiful  Dartmoor National Park within 20 minutes. Shops, pubs, restaurants, supermarket and other amenities, all within Totnes.

We really enjoyed our stay and so did the dogs ! Definitely would recommend and be back ourselves, regardless of the lamps !! Thanks Lottie

Glad you had a lovely holiday and we'll look into the lamp issue.

October 2017

A very enjoyable stay - the property was exactly as advertised and I would have no hesitation in staying at the property again.

October 2017

Lovely quaint little cottage. So handy for town shops, pubs and restaurants.

September 2017

Fantastic cottage in a perfect location. This was our second stay there and will be back.

July 2017

Yes - very much so. A return visit for us, helped by gorgeous weather, and greatly enjoyed. Will definitely go back in a couple of years.

June 2017

A lovely friendly cottage bang in the centre of quirky Totnes. We loved staying here and enjoyed it's relaxed feel. The charming courtyard garden was lovely for eating breakfast and watching the birds. Despite it being June we enjoyed the tiny wood burner stove at the end of a very wet day out exploring. It was clean and well appointed. The garage was a welcome addition and despite its relatively compact size we were able to park our car there meaning that we could explore on foot the lovely town of Totnes. It was our first visit to Totnes and we had a super time, in the town highlights for us included: Rumours wine bar ( fantastic food but need to book in the evening), The Fat Lemon cafe for wonderful vegetarian lunches The wild fig cafe for yummy cake. We also loved Babbacombe miniature village - worth every penny and so fascinating The record shop right at the very top of town is also worth a visit for your music fix.

We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at 4 Ramparts Walk and hope to welcome you back soon! Best wishes, The Toad Hall Team

June 2017

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Good directions and service for keys. Cottage was very clean, comfortable and well equipped and we appreciated the tea, milk and doggie welcome pack. Very comfy beds.

May 2017

we have been to 4RW many times and always enjoy our visits. Very pleased to meet up with Andy and Elin again and catch up with their news.

May 2017

No. 4 Ramparts Walk is a gem set in a quiet location in the centre of Totnes. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The cottage was well-equipped and spotlessly clean - a home from home. The secluded garden is the ideal place for breakfast and taking time out. Our thanks to Mr and Mrs Hunter. We are looking forward to our next visit already.

April 2017

We had a lovely stay at Ramparts Walk and would definitely go back there. A very relaxing space to be and incredibly convenient for the High Street and bus and rail connections.

April 2017

Lovely cottage, thoughtful touches (organic milk and biscuits on arrival) and a great position. Lovely views and birdsong. We found the beds a bit challenging / mattresses need replacing? But otherwise very comfortable. Thank you

Thank you for your comments which are greatly appreciated as the owners are always making improvements. Your valuable feedback has been passed onto the owner who has confirmed that there are memory foam toppers to both mattresses currently but the mattresses will both be replaced later this year anyway. We hope to welcome you back to 4 Ramparts Walk very soon. Best wishes, The Toad Hall team.

February 2017

Wonderful stay in a cottage that was perfect in every way. Warm, clean, well equipped and peaceful (when our 2yr old was asleep anyway!). We will be back!

May 2016

4 Ramparts Walk is situated in the town centre of a lovely little town so we hardly need to get the car out all week - a treat for village dwellers like us who have to drive 5 miles to get even a paper! It is well equipped and comfortable and now seems almost like a second home to us (who are repeat visitors, like many who sign the visitor's book). The owner and "local contact" are friendly and extremely helpful.

September 2015

Thank you for a fantastic stay in a beautiful cottage. The location was perfect; straight off the high street but still so peaceful. The cottage was very well equipped with ecofriendly and quality amenities. Beds were comfy and we have really enjoyed cooking in the kitchen with such a fabulous oven. It provided us with a great base to explore Totnes with some lovely walks by the river and also trips out to Dartington shops, Salcombe and Burgh Island. We most certainly will be coming back as the cottage is equally good for a summer retreat or a cosy winter break. Thanks again for making our Totnes stay so comfortable and relaxing.

August 2015

Our first time to Devon and we've had a lovely week in such a lovely well equipped house with such lovely furnishings. Had a great time exploring the area and fantastic beaches and highly recommend the Tangerine Tree for lunch. Totnes very similar to Lewes, where we live so felt like home from home! Thanks for a great home for a week.

May 2015

You know a holiday home is well-equipped when it has egg cups, playing cards and plenty of wine glasses! This is a real home-from-home right in the heart of Totnes, with the added benefits of easy parking, pretty decor and a gem of a garden.

April 2015

The cottage was extremely well equipped with some little extra touches such as tea, biscuits, milk, flowers. All were welcome after a long journey! We locked ourselves out of the property within 5 minutes of arriving! The 24 hour number was very helpful and directed us to the caretaker who promptly arrived within 20 minutes. Excellent service which exceeded our expectations - thank you very much.

February 2015

What a wonderfully welcoming cottage. Its the little touches that make it so unlike anywhere we've stayed in before. The fresh flowers, tea, coffee, milk and biscuits. The location is simply perfect. Immense privacy, yet in the middle of town. We would love to come again and will be recommending it widely.

February 2015

The property was perfectly located and full of character. We had a great holiday and would be happy to recommend this property and to return

January 2015

Everyone else has already said it! Simply amazing place. So thoughtfully equipped and beautifully maintained. We wanted for nothing except another week to stay. Maybe we will have to do that later in the year. Many many thanks.

March 2014

Charming cottage with character all of its own. Loved the proximity to the Town - and all the shops.

March 2014

The moment I walked through the door I fell in love with this wonderful cottage. Feel very happy to have found such an idyllic place to escape to with my family. Really love its rustic charm, the furnishings, the decor and the pretty garden. Its lovely to go out and explore this beautiful area and come back and cosy up there for the night.

September 2013

Lovely cottage well located in the cenre of town. Owners had thoughtfully left coffee, tea, sugar etc for our use so we need not of brought any of those things. Will definitely book the same cottage again some time in the future.

July 2013

Staff were very professional in processing payment and providing details on access to property

April 2013

Fantastic property with everything you could need, including a stairgate (essential for my 18 month old), ecover laundry liquid, organic milk in the fridge and biscuits. Perfect. Clearly the owner's home as well - it didn't feel like a rented property.
