With such close proximity to nature it is most likely that you will see Red Deer on the doorstep and in the evening hear a chorus of Owls, along with bats on the wing and enjoy amazingly clear views of the night sky.  The wild flower meadow adjacent to the cottage can be a riot of colour depending on the time of year with some rare flowers, starting in spring  with Blue Bells in the woodland, following on with primroses, orchids, Fox gloves and campion.

Burrow Hill Cottage enjoys a peaceful 'hidden away' location but is only a short walk from the rural village of Hemyock with its convenient amenities.  Idyllic, unspoilt and enjoying  privacy with its own garden.  The area is perfect for dog lovers and the property allows the freedom to roam in the owners fields immediately adjacent.  The location offers miles of footpaths and bridleways and has a feel of adventure and exploration with the addition of two pubs, easily reached by foot.  For the keen hiker and dog lover there is Wellington Monument and Beacon to be reached, a very enjoyable trip.  In addition there is a small castle and the local amenities at Hemyock village means you can stock up without travelling too far.  There are centuries of history to discover from Iron Age hill forts to World War II sites and famous Landmarks in between.  If peace and quiet, along with stunning countryside is your thing, Burrow Hill Cottage will not disappoint you.

Good friendly local pub in the centre of Hemyock. Separate dining area, but can also eat in the bar area, where dogs are allowed. The food was of a good standard, and the service was efficient and friendly.

April 2023

Excellent food and warm and friendly staff, happy to chat and talk to us about the area. Highly recommend.

July 2018

Wonderful welcoming pub - the food is absolutely delicious and plenty of it. The owners are friendly and helpful and dogs are most welcome. Highly recommended!

June 2018

Gorgeous views from garden. Excellent take away fish and chips on a Friday evening. Sat in and very disappointed with the standard of food especially for price. We had burgers and they offered a curry relish which just infused everything. Chips and onion rings greasy and tasteless as was the homemade burger. Real shame.

Allhallows Museum
(8 miles)

(2)

Honiton is famous for its historic lace industry, and the Allhallows Museum is an homage to some of the highest quality production in the world.  In Honiton’s oldest building, dating back to 1327, it features examples of 16th to early 20th century Honiton lace.  The museum also incudes Honiton pottery, a mid Victorian furnished doll's house; palaeontology; children's toys; war memorabilia, mementos of Allhallows School and the Borough of Honiton; coins and trade tokens.  There are children’s activities when you visit, and lace making tutorials are of course a highlight, helping to keep the craft alive for future generations.  The museum is open from March to October although hours vary so keep an eye on the website.  Admission is free, but it is a charity, so all donations are welcome.

Seaton Beach
(16 miles)

(7)

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon.  The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.

An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

Lovely walk along the seafront and excellent cafe at the end of it. Dog friendly and excellent food.

April 2024

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

June 2022

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

October 2020

Stunning views, clear blue sea and an amazing beach side cafe!

August 2020

Very nice

July 2018

Lovely and clean,

July 2018

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

October 2017

Beer Beach
(16 miles)

(11)

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline.  Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end.  There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town.  As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location.  There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler.  There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind.  Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

Lovely beach at any time but especially lively on festival day. We appreciated the walkways over the pebbles.

June 2018

Beer is a very pretty village!, and the beach is an absolute joy

September 2017

Visited one evening. A beautiful beach. You can walk to Seaton on the coast path, if you feel energetic and don't mind a lot of steps. Well worth it due to the stunning views.

May 2017

Branscombe Beach
(16 miles)

(13)

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.

October 2023

Beautiful Beach with stunning walks in both directions on coastal path. Sea shanty cafe modernised since our last visit. Lovely cream teas!

July 2023

June 2023

Beach clean and has pebbles rather than a sandy beach. Fabulous food found at the Sea Shanty Cafe with sea view and stunning views of the Jurassic coast line.

August 2022

gorgeous beach - we canoed and swam a lot

September 2021

Lovely beach

September 2021

Clean pebble beach. Good facilities cafe shop and toilets. Nice and quiet when we went in july. Lovely walks nearby

July 2021

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

June 2021

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

February 2020

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

January 2020

Superb beach and surroundings. Tricky drive to get there but well worth it.

June 2018

A pretty place down narrow lanes - the village is a must for keen photographers too - loved it!

September 2017

Sidmouth Beach
(16 miles)

(3)

By the seaside town of the same name, Sidmouth Beach is a long stretch of pebbles that stretches from the River Sid at the east of the town, West to Chit Rocks and Jacobs Ladder Beach and beyond.  From the town you go over a footbridge and a number of steps down to the beach, however there are also access points along the sea front esplanade.  There are a number of car parks close by, most of which are a few minutes’ walk from the beach itself, and it benefits from nearby facilities, cafes, restaurants and shops.  Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 1st May to the 30th September, however there is a small area at the East end of the beach where dogs are allowed all year round.  It’s a delightful spot for swimming sailing and surfing if the weather permits it, but you do have to take your own equipment.

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis
(18 miles)

(7)

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall.  There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by.  Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites.  There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round.  There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.

November 2021

Stayed here in The Little Sea House right on the beach. Amazing sunrises. Beautiful and peaceful but tricky to walk on in places.

October 2021

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

April 2022

We had enjoyed our first visit at Burrow Hill Farm Cottage so much last year, that we felt we really wanted to return. This year we again had a lovely holiday in quiet, beautiful countryside with all the joys of welcoming Spring, such a wonderful place to return to after exploring more of the many footpaths and bridleways which surround Hemyock. The cottage is such an easy place to stay in and sadly our week passed too quickly and it was time to hand the cottage back to the caring owners for them to prepare it so lovingly for the next lucky arrivals.

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed a return visit to Burrow Hill Farm.

September 2021

This is a lovely cottage in a beautiful and very peaceful spot. As we approached the farm we could tell from the painted gates and the weed free gravel that everything would be neat and well organised and indeed it was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Christopher and Caroline were very welcoming, helpful but not at all intrusive. Toad Hall Cottages were also very efficient and easy to deal with. We had a lovely holiday and wouldn’t hesitate to return. Thank you so much.

It was fantastic.lovely location and enjoyed a relaxing week. Will definitely be back.

September 2019

Mary Julian and Tia stayed September. This cottage is absolutely superb, it really is a home not holiday accommodation. Caroline and Chris (the owners) are wonderfully friendly and welcoming. We took Tia our dog for her annual holiday and I think she really enjoyed it. The beds are super super comfortable and the standard of cleanliness is as you would find on a luxury cruise liner. There was nothing I could criticise and the photos are just as you will find the cottage. The wildlife are most entertaining even if the dears do like to nibble on Caroline's flowers. Try it, I know you will love it. The CH is great so you will find it comfortable all year round. I give it 6 stars!! The local pub (The Catherine Wheel) has some quite interesting characters who are so friendly and the lady in the Spar shop is so cheerful. Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Very good value for your money.
