The Linhay, a superb detached cottage offering very high quality holiday accommodation in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is just a short drive from the coast and has been thoughtfully designed, all on one floor, to offer everything you could wish for in a comfortable and relaxing holiday property. Situated in a quiet location away from main roads, a mile or so from the attractive market town of Ottery St Mary, and only about 10 minutes drive from the pretty seaside town of Sidmouth, this attractive property is nestled on a sheltered hillside in the grounds of the welcoming owners' home, and has outstanding views across the Otter Valley and far beyond. All-day sunshine and beautiful sunsets can also be enjoyed from the private west-facing patio and garden. As well as two spacious en suite bedrooms (one of which can be made-up as either a super-king size room or a twin room), the cottage includes a bright and airy open plan living area with a wood burner and benefits from stunning views across the Otter Valley with French windows opening on to a spacious private patio with steps down to the garden. The surrounding area is a haven for walkers and cyclists with a network of local footpaths and bridleways inviting guests to explore the local woods and fields. Outstanding features of this property are the wonderful, peaceful setting and the open aspect with fabulous far-reaching views.

Close to the town of Ottery St Mary, that takes its name historically from the many otters that lived on the riverside. Set amongst green Devon countryside and it’s dominated by St Mary’s Church.  The town offers a few shops and a good supermarket. There are a few public houses, café and restaurants in the town.

The surrounding area offers much to do for all age groups, children will have fun at nearby Escot Park (less than 3 miles away).  Keen gardeners will not want to miss the wonderful Otter Nurseries as well as Joshua’s Harvest Store and Restaurant a short stroll from the centre of town.  Walkers will love the beautiful countryside routes on the doorstep (including a lovely stroll to the River Otter to the famous Tumbling Weir). The coast at Sidmouth is around 8 miles and the lovely West Dorset seaside town of Lyme Regis is about 35 minutes’ drive away. An idyllic holiday setting for families and couples, old and young alike.

For those wishing to explore a little further afield Dartmoor, Exmoor and the beautiful countryside of West Dorset are all within easy driving distance. Guests with very young children should be aware that there is an accessible, uncovered pond in the neighbouring owners' garden.

One well behaved dog welcome.

Detached cottage on one floor.

Open-plan living area with 2 comfortable sofas, TV (with Freeview) and DVD, wood burner, dining area, open plan fitted kitchen with electric oven and gas hob, fridge with icebox (additional freezer space available on request), microwave, dishwasher and washing machine.

Bedroom 1 with 5ft king size bed and en suite shower room with a shower and W.C.

Bedroom 2 with 3ft twin beds (or super-king size bed - request when booking if required) and en suite bathroom with a bath, shower over bath and W.C.

Patio area with barbecue and furniture (a few steps down to) garden with lawn.  The garden has recently been fenced on two sides, with wire and hedges on the other two sides. A gate allows for easy access.  Dogs should be accompanied when in the garden.

The ancient town of Ottery St Mary is famous for its impressively imposing Medieval church, and unusual circular tumbling weir on the River Otter. This picturesque town has been a hub of literary inspiration for hundreds of years, most recently featuring in Harry Potter’s adventures as Ottery St Catchpole.

Situated on the edge of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, yet just a 20 minute drive from the Cathedral city of Exeter, visitors to Ottery St Mary will find there’s a huge variety of things to see and do.

The town itself boasts a ramshackle collection of excellent independent shops and eateries, and is a walker’s paradise, with almost 100 different walks to choose from, varying from level walks along the banks of River Otter where you may spot a family of otters or beavers, to hills from where you can enjoy views as far as Dartmoor on a fine day.

Nearby Wildwood at Escot offers a brilliant family day out. Set in over 200 acres of stunning parkland, here you can come face to face with some of the wildlife that used to live in Devon, including red squirrels, lynxes and wild boar. There’s also a maze, hidden playground, drop slide, indoor play barn, and Anglo Saxon village to explore.

For days out by the seaside, the coastal towns of Seaton, Beer, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are all just a short drive way – each offering access to the magnificent World Heritage Jurassic Coastline, with its impressive cliffs, coastal walks, fossil hunting opportunities and family-friendly beaches to enjoy.

A holiday cottage in Ottery St Mary provides a great base from which to enjoy the many and varied rural and coastal charms of East Devon and neighbouring Dorset.

We have used this tea room in the past but not this time. It used to be a proper tea room now it's a craft and china shop with a few tables in a side room and wasn't open every time we went by.

Have just spent a superb weekend at Pear tree cottage. The house was immaculate, Scones, Jam and cream along with home made apple juice was a lovely surprise. It was lambing time and we were invited to visit the lambs and hold a designate pet lamb. We met the owners who were extremely welcoming and Grandfather who was a really interesting character. The owners went to a lot of effort to ensure our stay was the best it could be and they surpassed our expectations. The location was an ideal base for the places we wanted to visit, the facilities were first class which made our break all the better, including our dog who also received welcome snacks. We would highly recommend this cottage as a fantastic base to visit Devon

This is a big disappointment. Escot House is still shown on the website as having a garden when in reality it is now a feeble attempt at a wildlife park and the entrance fee is extortionate. You can barely see the token animals and the garden itself is totally overgrown and neglected. This was not made clear at reception. If you want to see a real wilding project go to Knepp Castle Estate in West Sussex entry to which is free but don't waste your money here. It's a joke.

April 2023

This is a lovely little place to visit, animals to see and gardens to explore. It’s a little run down and needs a lick of paint in places but worth a visit.

October 2020

Well worth a visit if you have pre-teen kids (and maybe fine for older ones too). My boys had a great time, we were there for a good few hours and they never got bored. Good value for money.

Sidmouth Beach
(5 miles)

(3)

By the seaside town of the same name, Sidmouth Beach is a long stretch of pebbles that stretches from the River Sid at the east of the town, West to Chit Rocks and Jacobs Ladder Beach and beyond.  From the town you go over a footbridge and a number of steps down to the beach, however there are also access points along the sea front esplanade.  There are a number of car parks close by, most of which are a few minutes’ walk from the beach itself, and it benefits from nearby facilities, cafes, restaurants and shops.  Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 1st May to the 30th September, however there is a small area at the East end of the beach where dogs are allowed all year round.  It’s a delightful spot for swimming sailing and surfing if the weather permits it, but you do have to take your own equipment.

July 2018

Visited twice and both times had a pleasant walk along the prom in the sun. Sea very calm. Lovely cup of coffee served from little coffee "bar" on prom served by a charming and coffee knowledgeable American lady. Pleasant and busy shopping area behind the prom. Not much parking and just a little expensive.

Branscombe Beach
(7 miles)

(13)

Nestled into a valley that reaches down to the sea, Branscombe Beach is tucked away on the Jurassic Coast, and is linked to a timeless, magical village of the same name. Surrounded by woodland and farmland, the area is peppered with thatched houses, a working forge and a restored windmill. It’s a National Trust location, with a number of charming walks and trails to follow, one of which leads to the Old Bakery tearooms. The beach itself was a long pebble beach until the winter of 2022 when storms rearranged the pebbles and is now a long sandy beach. It has a large car park close by where there are toilets available, as well as a picnic area. The beach is a haven for walking, relaxing and adventurous rock-poolers. If you want to catch your supper it’s a wonderful place to fish for mackerel and pollock, although the Beach Shanty Cafe on Branscombe Beach provides excellent local food.

Lovely place for a dog walk along the beach. Such a pity that the sea is eroding the cliffs around here.

April 2024

Attractive beach, good energetic coast path walking.

October 2023

Beautiful Beach with stunning walks in both directions on coastal path. Sea shanty cafe modernised since our last visit. Lovely cream teas!

July 2023

The beach was within walking distance of where we were staying. Excellent for dogs and the sea shanty sells dog icecream

June 2023

Beach clean and has pebbles rather than a sandy beach. Fabulous food found at the Sea Shanty Cafe with sea view and stunning views of the Jurassic coast line.

August 2022

gorgeous beach - we canoed and swam a lot

September 2021

Lovely beach

September 2021

Clean pebble beach. Good facilities cafe shop and toilets. Nice and quiet when we went in july. Lovely walks nearby

July 2021

One of the few beaches we found that had some sand on it, although it also had lots of stones too of course, and dogs were welcome. The option to sit on a grass area next to the beach was a bonus too. I had a swim in the sea whilst there which was lovely.

June 2021

Lovely area but the only place you could get a coffee etc was the Sea Shanty and it was closed half term week!!!!! As the Sea Shanty and the Old Bakery were closed all week for me it let Branscombe down.

February 2020

We loved walking to beach fro Branscombe. If you follow the signs and walk on the road to the beach its quite hilly so take the footpath from behind the cottages opposite the Masons Arms, its a nice flat walk to the beach, easy to follow.

January 2020

Superb beach and surroundings. Tricky drive to get there but well worth it.

June 2018

A pretty place down narrow lanes - the village is a must for keen photographers too - loved it!

September 2017

Beer Beach
(8 miles)

(11)

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline.  Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end.  There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town.  As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location.  There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler.  There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind.  Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

July 2018

Absolutely lovely so clean and tidy. Food and drink catered for very well three beach cafes. Fishing trips, hire of boats self drive if you wish, what more could you wish for.

July 2018

Lovely beach at any time but especially lively on festival day. We appreciated the walkways over the pebbles.

June 2018

Beer is a very pretty village!, and the beach is an absolute joy

September 2017

Visited one evening. A beautiful beach. You can walk to Seaton on the coast path, if you feel energetic and don't mind a lot of steps. Well worth it due to the stunning views.

May 2017

Seaton Beach
(9 miles)

(7)

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon.  The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.

An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

Lovely walk along the seafront and excellent cafe at the end of it. Dog friendly and excellent food.

April 2024

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

June 2022

Nice seaside resort, lovely walk along seafront with the dog & very tasty lunch at the Coast cafe bar, very friendly staff & lovely food. We travelled to Seaton on the tram, very pleasant journey & we spent nice afternoon at Seaton.

October 2020

Stunning views, clear blue sea and an amazing beach side cafe!

August 2020

Very nice

July 2018

Lovely and clean,

July 2018

Nice place for a seaside stroll, we were a bit disappointed that bikes aren't allowed on the paths and that there are dog restrictions. Pebbly beach so no good for sand castles but we had a nice few hours and lunch and ice cream from one of the nearby cafes.

October 2017

Budleigh Salterton Beach
(9 miles)

(1)

A picturesque two mile pebble beach backed partly with cliffs, with plenty of space and lovely clean clear water.  Along the esplanade there are beach cafes and a car park and it is only a short wander into the village for toilets, shops and pubs.  Care should be taken swimming towards the eastern end of the beach where there can be strong currents due to the River Otter, and there are no lifeguard facilities.

May 2023

Comfortable accommodation, lovely view over Ottery St Mary. Covered car port was much appreciated

January 2023

We had a wonderful break. The Linhay provided perfect accommodation and Jenny and James were excellent hosts - welcoming, friendly and available but completely unobtrusive. We could not recommend the Linhay more highly.

October 2022

A very thoughtfully laid-out cottage which is ideal for two couples (both bedrooms and their bathrooms are excellent). Once on the property, parking arrangements are perfect (under cover and right by the front door). Very tasteful decor throughout. Fabulous views and wonderful daylight. Extremely helpful and friendly hosts.

August 2022

Linhay house was perfect is all respects; the location, the standard of accommodation and most definitely the hospitality offered by James and Jenny. A wonderful week enjoyed by all the family. Many thanks,

July 2022

Brilliant

June 2022

We enjoyed our stay at Linhay hugely. The garden setting was wonderfully private and peaceful (the views over the valley to Ottery St Mary and Dartmoor beyond were unforgettable - especially at sunset) and the interior of the cottage was spacious and beautifully-kept.The hospitable owners (living in the n early main house) made us feel really welcome throughout - on hand if we needed advice but never intrusive. All in all, Linhay suited us down to the ground and we felt we could not have made a better choice! Thank you Jenny and James.

May 2022

Really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful, peaceful location with fantastic views over Ottery St. Mary. The lovely owners made us feel very welcome and were not intrusive throughout our 9 day stay. Would certainly book again if wanting to visit this area in the future and highly recommend it.

May 2022

Owners where friendly and helpful. The view from the cottage was outstanding.

April 2022

Yes, we enjoyed our stay. Our only criticism is about the television. As one of our party was disabled and it was early in the season we spent the evenings in the accommodation. We had difficulty adjusting the controls (one of the problems was dead batteries in the remote) and could only get the first 4 channels. Being used to having many different channels and having Netflix etc., like most people, we felt this was something that needed updating.

Thank your for your feedback. We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at The LInhay, East Hill. We were sorry to hear that you had problems with the television. We have spoken with the owners with regards to the television and would have been able to help as they live nearby. Unfortunately the speed in the area is approx. 2mbt. This would not work for any smart tv at present. They are hoping that a fibre connection will be available in the future. The owners had spare batteries for the control and thank you for leaving these on the side so that they can replace them ready for the next guests.

January 2022

Lovely warm welcome. Hosts on hand to help with anything and a chat about local walks etc but although they live next door they leave you to enjoy your holiday. Such a well laid out and beautifully presented Cottage. Loved the open plan living and en suite bedrooms at each end, perfect for couples. Kitchen very well stocked with crockery and utensils, perfect for preparing meals. Such a lovely quiet spot with fabulous views from all rooms. The wood burner made it extra cosy. The cake left for us was a very nice touch. We loved our post Christmas stay and would highly recommend staying here.

Thank you for your feedback for The Linhay at East Hill. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay.

July 2021

our third visit and we always enjoy the property, views and the peace and quiet

July 2021

Enjoyed 100%

June 2021

Lovely people, nice cottage, wonderful views. The only issue is the state of the single track road from the main road to the property. At one point there is no road, just a jumble of rocks, which unfortunately tore loose the trim on the bottom of my car- which grounded slightly almost every time, and the road is so narrow there’s no way of avoiding it. If you have a particularly low car you might want to think about this!

June 2021

Very much

May 2021

March 2017

Fantastic location with the most stunning sunset, wonderful cottage and owners were lovely.

March 2017

This is a small clean cottage with two excellent bedrooms and ensuite. It is best described as dog tolerant rather than dog friendly - the garden is not secure, neither is the field behind it as sheep can enter at will. The beds were very comfortable and the linen and towels of good quality. Our hosts were very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful.

August 2016

Linhay was a lovely cottage with stunning views. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and a good farm shop at the end of the road was a real bonus. Highly recommend this property.

June 2016

The accommodation was great - very clean and modern, well laid out, unbelieveable views from the terrace, peaceful garden, well located near Ottery St. Mary and all routes in and around Devon/Dorset. Friendly owners who made the effort to chat to us, but also 'knew' to leave us to get on with the holiday....but we knew 'were there' if we needed assistance. The fact that they lived next door had no negative impact on the holiday at all - we weren't really overlooked. The 'touch' of leaving us a home-made lemon cake, milk and apple juice was just lovely and made us feel welcome. Thanks for a great stay!

November 2015

Linhay is in a beaufitful setting with amazing views. We received a warm welcome. Linhay had everything we needed. We would definitely recommend it and would go back again.
