This absolutely gorgeous little detached cottage, 16th century in origin, is a truly romantic hideaway! Buried in glorious countryside and surrounded by 4 acres of wild, informal but beautiful gardens and woods, recognised by the National Garden Scheme, the cottage is alongside the owners’ home, has a large area of garden set aside for guests' use, (although not fully enclosed and the owners dogs may pop by to say hello), is very tastefully decorated with delightful personal touches and has an extensive library. Close to Dartmoor National Park, famous for its rugged beauty, the Two Moors Walk and the glorious Teign valley, where a visit to Castle Drogo is highly recommended, the cottage is also close to the A30, giving easy access to the whole South West.

We did enjoy our stay very much, a very quiet week Lovely cottage and hosts, just our preference for a shower not bath. Will recommend to others tho
We enjoyed our stay immensely. Warm and friendly welcome, beautiful grounds and an extremely cosy and welcoming cottage. We would certainly consider staying again and have already recommended the Bothy to friends.
Fabulous & luxurious snug to escape daily life, surrounded by wonderful gardens to lose yourself in. Michael, Penny and Richard (Bagshaw & Monty too) were top hosts and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will no doubt be back soon!
Had a wonderful time. The owners were really friendly, cottage super cosy and gardens really beautiful. Our dog was made really welcome and had the time of his life. Would love to return
The gardens were fantastic we thoroughly enjoyed them, the owners very welcoming and the welcome package was most generous. The stairs to bedroom were very steep but the cottage had real character. My dog also had a wonderful time and was made to feel very welcome and he enjoyed the company of the owners two dogs. The gardens were so lovely to walk around we didn't go anywhere else apart from Tom Cobbley tavern where we had a great meal and our dog was welcome
We thoroughly enjoyed the Bothy, the gardens of Lewis House and the warm welcome and hospitality from Michael, Penny and Richard. The house was very comfortable, especially the bed, and it was wonderfully peaceful and relaxing for the restorative break we wanted. We would definitely return. Thank you!
I would thoroughly recommend this gorgeous property for a couple looking for a romantic escape. It is situated in rural Devon in beautiful gorgeous and with friend helpful owners. Great pub locally was the Tom Cobley Tavern in Spreyton. We aim to return soon!
This is just such a delightful cottage set in the most beautiful garden setting. So lovely to wander around the grounds and see all the plants and flowers and to find seats scattered around in different places. Also loved the duck pond with ducks and duck house,so charming. The cottages itself was so comfortable a large settee and comfy armchair along with so many books...so much choice. Upstairs there was a very comfortable bed and a couple of seats to birdwatch (binoculars supplied) and also to use the internet...no probs there. So quiet and relaxing we slept well too . The evenings were a little chilly so very pleased to be able to use the gas fire - much better than a log one in reality, Hope to be back soon when we can have another break. Thanks to Michael and Penny for arranging such a comfortable and welcoming place.
Everything perfect, as always. Will be back!
I cannot speak highly enough of this idyllic cottage. The 4 acres of grounds are beautiful. The bird life was amazing. The Bothy itself is just like a doll's house, we absolutely adored it. We don think that the photos and description convey just how perfect it is. We had a wonderful welcome from Richard and an amazing welcome pack - cereal, bread, eggs, butter, tea bags, marmalade AND Proscco. There are literally hundreds of books and dozens of DVDs, board games, cards etc. It is just the perfect 'get away from it all' retreat. We hope to come back in the Summertime and see the gardens in all their glory. As beautiful as Devon is, you wouldn't want to stray away from the many nooks and crannies for sitting and relaxing. A special big 'thank you' to the Staff at Toad Hall. We were originally due to arrive on the day of the big snow storm. They went out of their way to help us sort the situation out so at we did get our winter break. Thank you again.
Lived up to expectations, beautiful setting, lovely cottage, welcoming hosts. Nice touch the welcome basket of goodies! Would certainly highly recommend and hope to make a return visit.
Delightful cottage with so much character. The owners were very friendly and helpful without in any way being intrusive. I like to know some history about where I am staying and the area, so for me something in the guest information book would have been interesting and welcome. Access to the property is better via Spreyton. Many thanks.
We loved our stay, the hosts were fantastic as we're their 2 dogs. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Perfect stay for us and Pickle our dog. Have never felt so welcome and relaxed when travelling with a dog.
We have a wonderful stay.the owners gives you the feeling to be back home again.
Quite simply a beautiful place to stay. The garden is fantastic and so large it takes a week to discover it all. Great hosts who were very attentive
A beautiful location with welcoming hosts, fabulous gardens and a cosy cottage. The perfect place to relax and unwind.
Lovely cottage, owners and dogs! Very cosy after out walking all day and beautiful gardens.
Absolutely the best holiday cottage we have ever stayed at. The setting was amazing. 4 acres of beautiful gardens. Very well equipped, extra bonus was the fantastic collection of books available to borrow and read.Would love to come back at some stage.
The Bothy is a very relaxing place to spend a week, surrounded by stunning gardens
We had an amazing short break. The Bothy was truly magical we felt the photographs didn't do it justice. Michael and Richard were very friendly and helpful and made our overall stay very enjoyable. Keep up the amazing work. We can't wait to come back!
Wonderful holiday in an idyllic cottage surrounded by delightful gardens.
A fantastic place to retreat from a busy world. Owners were really welcoming and friendly and we will be coming back.
The Bothy was a little piece of heaven on earth.
Was very happy with our stay at the Bothy. Ideal for those who need to recharge their batteries!
Extremely peaceful and relaxing holiday. From this location we were able to visit whatever Cornwall, Devon and Somerset had to offer. The Bothy is beautifully presented and the garden is truly idyllic. The pictures do not do it justice.
I just want to say how fantastic Michael and Penny were at the house. The cooked us a lovely meal one night in their home, which was so kind. The house and gardens are simply stunning. This all made for a really wonderful break.
The owner, Michael Pell, was very helpful, especially when there were two power cuts! Not his fault. We would respectfully suggest that he upgrades the sofa. We are both tall and did not find it very comfortable. Otherwise excellent. The bed was very comfortable.
An exceptional property in fantastic gardens in a truly peaceful setting
A lovely property in a beautiful and peaceful location. Extremely restful.

A really relaxing stay in a little corner of paradise.
The Bothy is a joy and we will certainly be looking to go back and also use the website again in the future
Michael and Penny have created our idea of a UK holiday heaven. The Bothy should have gold medals galore but at the same time its the best kept secret, we always want to be able to book again. Our dog loved it too!
The Bothy is a charming and cosy venue. We and our small dog were made most welcome and the owners could not have been more helpful. The welcome hamper was much appreciated. We hope to return in more clement weather!
We feel pretty safe with toad hall !
We had a wonderful Holiday at the Bothy. Michael & Penny were great hosts and made us and our dog feel extremely welcome. I would highly recommend the Bothy for a relaxing week. The selection of books to read in the library was extensive and varied and the location is handy for Dartmoor and the Coast. The Cottage & gardens are beautiful and a testament to the hard work of the hosts. Thank you again for a superb Holiday.
What a fantastic idyllic place to spend a few days, wonderful hospitality and lovely owners... One of those holidays where you have time, space and peace to work out what you're going to do with the rest of your life!! Even our 17 year old dog was rejuvenated having spent a week with the resident pooch....
The people at the Bothy are brilliant. Perfect place to relax and think.
