Courshay Springs is a charming detached period property located just outside the sleepy village of Hawkchurch, just 4 miles from Axminster, which makes it an ideal holiday base for exploring Devon, Dorset and the famous Jurassic Coast.  The house, of which the central part is some 200 years old, boasts spacious, characterful and light filled accommodation, quirky cottage doorways, with most rooms boasting dual aspect views over the delightful gardens and surrounding countryside.  Courshay Springs is a real home from home, tastefully decorated with ecological paints and furnished with comfortable and welcoming furnishings to appeal to both families and couples.  Highlights for this property are the wildlife gardens and wildflower meadows, which are rich in wildlife and a wide range of wildflowers including orchids.

There are endless places to visit from Courshay Springs on foot, by bike or in the car.  Within 10-15 minutes’ drive away are the popular Jurassic Coastal towns of Charmouth, Lyme Regis or West Bay.  Or alternatively enjoy a day trip to the bustling market town of Axminster and enjoy Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Deli, or a trip to the lively market town of Bridport.  The house is located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are plenty of stunning local walks directly from the front door.  Guests can stroll to the village pub, ancient church (Grade 1 Listed 12th century with unique medieval carvings), shop and nearby hotel which has a brasserie open to the public.  By night, the lack of any light pollution ensures that the Milky Way can be seen on a clear night sky.

Front door into spacious triple aspect lounge with views over the valley, fireplace inset with a wood burning stove, large sofa, two armchairs, secondary dining table, music centre, TV and DVD.  Beamed kitchen with Rayburn, electric hob, built-in electric oven, microwave and fridge freezer.  Step up to secondary kitchen area with sink, cupboard space and washing machine. Cloakroom with WC and wash basin.  Two steps to dual aspect dining room with views over the back garden. Dining table to comfortably seat six, secondary fridge, seating area with two wooden armchairs, small TV and back door into the garden.  Cottage style doorways with low lintels throughout and internal steps in kitchen, dining room and utility room. Please ask for an ACCESS STATEMENT.  First floor; dual aspect master double bedroom with views over the rear garden, 4ft 6 inch double bed, cot, wardrobe and chest of drawers.  Twin bedroom with views to the front and rear of the house over the valley and to the garden, 3ft single beds, built-in wardrobe and chest of drawers.  Second double bedroom with 4ft 6inch bed, front and rear views and chest of drawers (please note that this bed is positioned against a wall with access to just one side).  Large family bathroom with shower over bath, wash basin and WC.

Large garden to the rear and side of the house which is equipped with garden table and chairs. This garden is terraced in areas and is a cottage style garden with mature shrubs and plantings.  To the front of the house and across the lane, guests are welcome, at their own risk, to explore 10 acres of wildflower meadows and ancient dykes of archaeological interest, possibly dating to the Bronze Age.  A varied range of wild flowers include two species of orchid, cowslips, native bluebells, betony and devil’s bit scabious. 

Parking for two cars to the front of the property. 

  • Included:  Bed linen, WiFi, standard cot, highchair, stair gates (at top and bottom of stairs), electricity and central heating (oil).  Please bring your own bath and beach towels.
  • Pets: One well behaved dog welcome. (Pet charge £25.00 per week).  A second dog may be accepted with enquiry.
  • Telephone:  Landline telephone at the property with honesty box system in place.  Mobile reception fair to good depending upon network.
  • Local Facilities: Beaches: Lyme Regis, 7 miles; Charmouth, 6 miles; West Bay, 14 miles. Hawkchurch village pub and shop, 15 minutes’ walk or 0.75 miles drive.  Hotel with brasserie and bar, 1 mile.  Supermarkets and wider range of facilities in Axminster, 4 miles.

Thank you to the Caretaker and Owners - we really enjoyed our stay.

The shower facilities were very disappointing, one could even say inadequate. Disappointing also that there were no basics in the kitchen, not even salt and pepper. There were far too many laminated signs all over the house, bordering on insulting! Would not recommend and would not stay again. Shame as the house is in an amazing location.

I am delighted to say the owner has now refurbished the bathroom with a new electric shower over bath, which should meet all guest requirements. - The Toad Hall Team

The property is flooded with light, has wonderful views and generous in size for a family of four. Stylish yet rustic. A true country retreat yet just a few miles drive from Lyme Regis and not far from West Bay and Seaton. We plan to return next year.
