Visitors love this beautiful, Georgian market town that’s also a popular sailing resort. Lymington boasts three marinas and was the training ground for local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, you can see the golden letter box at the bottom of the high street, painted in recognition of his success with a fifth Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Lymington is one of the largest towns in the New Forest and has a key role in the life of the area. This charming town is packed full of history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and is an important port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent. Human habitation in the Lymington area dates back to the Iron Age, and a 6th Century BC hill fort known locally as Buckland Rings can still be seen today. As with many other towns and villages in the area, Lymington thrived during the Norman Conquest, thanks to its key location on the south coast.

If you want to leave your car at home and come by train, Lymington Rail line is a branch off the main Waterloo to Weymouth line. Once here, you’ll find regular buses with stops all over the New Forest and coastline.

There are lots of places to walk and amble in and around Lymington, these include characterful cobbled streets leading down to the town quay and harbour – a great place to relax and watch harbour life - fishing boats land their haul, yachts and leisure boats coming in and out.

There are lots of town events, activities and day trips from Lymington including fishing trips, boat and sailing charters, canoeing and kayaking, diving trips, mini cruises and ferry over to the Isle of Wight with your car or as a foot passenger.

Saturdays in the high street are a hive of activity, with a weekly street market selling everything from plants, clothes and household goods to home-made cakes, fruit and veg and a whole lot more. Shopping is great with a high street brands mixed with an interesting and eclectic mix of independent retailers and boutiques. There are a few supermarkets and specialist food shops for provisions to take back to your cottage, including one that makes their own home-made dishes and desserts and freezes them.

Lymington also has a number of really good eateries in and around the town, with the main concentration being around the high street. Lanes of Lymington serves superb food and also runs a cookery school. The Elderflower, whose chef/proprietor hails from the famous 5* Chewton Glen Hotel is superb.

During the warmer months you can relax in the bandstand gardens and enjoy some free musical entertainment. A few minutes’ further on are Lymington Sea Water Baths, the oldest of their kind in the UK, dating back to 1833. A short walk further on is the start of Keyhaven Nature Reserve. Well worth going to if you like birds, wildlife and natural beauty complimented with wonderful views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

On driveway for 2 cars, or on the quiet roadside in front of house.

Not a good experience, checked website and it stated that food is served until 8pm on Sunday. Arrived with 6 people at 7pm to be told kitchen closes at 430 on Sundays and the keep forgetting to ask Fullers to update website. Didn’t seem interested in serving us a drink was more interested in chatting to couple with Yappy dog at the bar.. Looks like a nice pub from the outside. Must have just have caught staff on a off night on this occasion.

February 2024

Visited the Fishermen's Rest, which was an easy 5 minute walk from the accommodation. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, the food was delicious (we visited on a Sunday and one of us had the Roast and one the fish of the day) and the atmosphere was good. We wanted to return but run out of days.

A very pleasant pub, with garden. Food good. We experienced mainly very friendly staff but one member of staff seemed more intent on getting us to order earlier than we wished, so we would get off the table in time she explained when asked.

Had some lovely meals here but fish and chips were greasy. Sticky toffee pudding was fabulous as were the other fish main courses we had. Bad idea to use the grill for toast - too hot - burnt.

September 2019

Lovely pub/restaurant with great food. A nice place to go for an evening meal

September 2019

We really enjoyed this pub/restaurant the food was really good, also the beer, consequently we ate here three times. Staff very friendly, helpful and obliging. However it is essential to book a table.

June 2019

We went 3 or 4 times during our stay in Lymington. It's a very welcoming little pub with a small but very nice outside area. Kids are welcome and the food is fantastic. Possibly the best burger I've ever eaten! Would definitely recommend.

July 2017

We enjoyed an early evening meal at thus pub. It was very convenient to our cottage. Everything was lovely. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The food delicious and the wine list pretty reasonable too. The ambience was good. It's a pretty traditional pub in its decor and that is meant to be positive because it helped create a very warm, comfortable and inviting environment. We will definitely return if we come back to Lymington.

Lovely pub, went here most evenings for an after walk pint or coffee. Very friendly staff and Manager. Only criticism is they stop serving food at 6pm on a Sunday. We got there at 645 and would have preferred to eat here rather then the other pub (Ship) up the road.

February 2024

Was quiet when we visited, friendly staff and good pint. Couple of negatives…. Staff coming off duty tended to congregate at bar and were very loud and a lot of fruity language. Could also smell cigarette smoke in bar area.

October 2023

A very good meal and we loved the doughnuts.

Very expensive and no choice on a Sunday

September 2018

Great pub right on the marina, fantastic for kids with a big garden out front with a wooden climbing gym and play area. Highly recommend when the weather is nice and especially if you have kids. Food was very nice and they even made breakfast solely for us when we arrived a bit late one morning and they'd already stopped service. Very appreciated!

The White Hart
(Less than a mile)

(10)

An endearing 200-year-old inn which welcomes families and dogs. A great place for a drink or bite to eat. You’ll find a selection of excellent real ales and drinks which can be taken outside to a large, pretty beer garden, equipped with big play area for the youngsters. If it’s a nippy, inside is a huge log fire to keep you warm and toasty. Food at The White Heart is really good, with menus offering some exciting alternatives to the usual pub classics.

The Kings Arms
(Less than a mile)

(4)

An atmospheric, former coaching inn dating back to the 17th century in the centre of Lymington with a pleasant beer garden. A regular stop for locals to have a drink, the Kings Arms serves good, honest pub food from a friendly crew of staff. The pub maybe historic, yet entertainment is very much twenty first century, with a regular and varied selection of live music, DJ, quiz nights and TV sports events.

Had a nice meal here upon arrival in Lymington. Very pleasant helpful staff. Also, a very nice gift shop, and Tourist Information centre.

October 2023

Brilliant Museum and the cafe is excellent

September 2023

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

September 2023

Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.

August 2022

A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries

May 2022

Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

October 2021

Well worth spending a morning learning about the history of Lymington and the wider New Forest area. There is always an interesting pop up exhibition too. The cafe is great and serves lovely home made food.

Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

August 2023

Enjoyed stay. (Several times before) The cleanliness of the house was outstanding and makes a huge difference, particularly on arrival.

July 2023

Such a lovely spacious light & clean cottage. Very well placed to explore the coast & the New Forest. Easy private parking & safe garden for our dog to enjoy. Short walk into Lymington whose Saturday market is well worth a visit.

June 2023

Enjoyed the stay and a lovely house overall in a good location. The one disappointment was the Garden that has recently been re-landscaped and was very different to that shown on website at time of booking. Absence of any grass lawn was a real shame. New garden seems unfinished and is mainly paving and shingle - very exposed to sun and lacks any shade - it’s going to be extremely hot come July/august! The house overall got quite hot during the afternoon from direct sun alone.

May 2023

Always enjoy staying at this property. Good value for money. Great position, very clean, comfortable beds, well-equipped and clean kitchen. It feels like home when you walk in and everything is 'works' well. Thank you for our stay.

November 2021

We had a fantastic time.

October 2021

Really enjoyed our stay, very comfortable house and great location

September 2021

We enjoyed our stay, location was great for walking to salt flats.

August 2021

The property was beautifully clean - as it was last year which is why we booked it again. There was plenty of hand sanitiser and cleaning spray for us to use. We felt very safe. We had a lovely stay with beautiful weather. We decided to leave early on the Thursday night which was a shame, due to having to vacate by 9am Friday, which is understandable but too stressful for a holiday considering the amount to be done in stripping 5 beds etc. Absolutely no complaints though - it's a lovely quiet property and we booked it again for 2022 before we even left!

June 2021

Excellent property and good location.

April 2021

Excellent stay as always as we have stayed here a few times before. Everything is always beautifully clean and tidy.

April 2021

Fabulous house Great location Spotlessly clean Additional antibacterial cleaning spray and hand gel useful.

October 2020

Had a fantastic stay again this year, really hope to come back next year for fourth visit. Love the new decor in hallway and front bedroom, carpet is so soft and bouncy. The house was spotlessly clean and we felt very reassured as attention to detail regarding our safety due to Covid 19 was first class. Our terrier, Scruffy, had the best time and loved to park opposite, a real gem on the doorstep. Thank you for allowing us to share your wonderful home.

October 2020

Another wonderful stay in this property especially at this time. Everything was spotless with plenty of hand sanitiser available. It's a wonderful place, very spacious and everything needed for a perfect holiday.

August 2020

We had a fantastic stay. Perfect for elderly mum as well as my teenage children who could get out and about on their own. We would love to stay again. The dog didn’t want to go home!

July 2020

The owners had gone to great lengths to ensure we felt safe and everywhere was really clean. We have stayed in some lovely New Forest cottages, but despite being in the town rather than in the actual forest, this is probably one of the best. Really couldn’t fault it.

October 2019

Had another fantastic holiday at Oystercatchers again this year. A wonderful "Home from Home" with attention to every detail much appreciated. Celebrated husbands 60th birthday and couldn't have been better in a wonderful location. Have already booked again for next year, keep up the good work 10/10.

September 2019

We had a lovely time.

September 2019

We all enjoyed our stay (3 generations). Oystercatchers was a great, spacious base for us. We all coped with the walk to town, though it may be too far for some. There is plenty to do in the area and plenty of places to eat. We may make a return visit as didn't do everything we'd have liked to on this visit.

August 2019

The standard of furnishing was good except the tv stand as mentioned above. We did enjoy our stay and loved the location as easy to get everywhere and we could walk into town and the harbour.

June 2019

Very pleasant Holliday and would definitely re- book next year.

June 2019

A lovely and light, clean house to walk into. Great sleeping arrangements for extended family. Brilliant position for walking everywhere; town and coast. A very quiet road and private garden. Would defiantly recommend.

May 2019

Yes, we did.

April 2019

Really enjoyed our stay. Location is excellent and quiet. Everything is within easy walking distance.

October 2018

Had a fantastic holiday and have already booked to come back next October. The house was a true home from home and the attention to detail was much appreciated. No negative comments a true 10/10 only positives.

September 2018

We really enjoyed the cottage it’s location was wonderful. It was peaceful and pleasant and had a wonderful holiday.

September 2018

Fantastic location, well equipped and a kitchen to die for.

July 2018

Excellent location. Excellent garden. Level of equipment provided was also excellent.

June 2018

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, a home from home property that felt welcoming the minute we stepped in.

May 2018

A lovely quiet place to stay. Our dog enjoyed her walks in the local park. It was very easy to reach the places we wanted to visit from Lymington, and was easy access to both the forest and the sea.

April 2018

This is the best holiday home we have ever stayed in. We absolutely love it there. If I could quit working and retire, I would happily move there!!!!! This was our fourth stay and we are so impressed with the refurbishments that the owners do year-on-year. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough

November 2017

This house worked perfectly for us all, a family of 3 generations, from young to old. We hope to return again.

September 2017

Our third time at Newenham Road. Just as enjoyable as before. Just a few niggles as above. A good time was had by all four of us.

June 2017

Really enjoyed stay. Impressed with new kitchen and all equipment provided. Shower in main bathroom not very good, needs electric shower like shower downstairs.

June 2017

the house its self was excellent, everything we needed, clean and spacious. the only let down was the dog being able to escape from the garden and not being able to open the conservatory on sunny days, felt we were a bit trapped in the house.

May 2017

The house was wonderful in many ways, and we will return. A few minor improvements would make it even better.

August 2016

Always great service. I have used you many times over the years and never been disappointed

May 2016

Lovely comfortable house in a very quiet location, close to a well kept park.

April 2016

A beautiful clean house in lovely central surroundings.

July 2015

Great property! Ideal location for walking and bird watching. Would love to go again next year.
