It is assured that Sashes, a deceptively spacious Grade II fisherman’s cottage gloriously located in Minehead on the North Somerset coastline, won’t fail to delight its guests for so many reasons. Set opposite the waterside with only a tree lined avenue and the South West Coastal Path separating it from the waters edge, guests will undoubtedly be enchanted by the sea views enjoyed from many of its rooms and terraced garden. The most difficult decision that needs to be made is whether to turn left or right out of the front door and head along the town’s mile long level esplanade following the beautiful sandy coastline. The cottage itself is full of charm, space and character. It has been tastefully furnished and decorated with a comfortable lounge, lovely kitchen diner which offers all modern amenities and the piece de resistance is the superb master bedroom with a seating area from which to watch the boats coming in and out of the harbour just a few minutes away. Its terraced rear garden boasts a sunny aspect and pretty views over the Bristol Channel and the coast of Wales.

Minehead itself is a bustling seaside resort with plenty of inns and restaurants to satisfy both hunger and thirst, but these excesses can be exercised away by taking a walk along the wonderful beaches or over the beautiful heather clad Exmoor National Park. Lose yourself for a day in the nearby historic village of Dunster, overlooked by its brooding castle, or hitch a nostalgic ride on the West Somerset Steam Railway. For both couples and families alike and at any time of year, there is so much to do with the benefit of a fantastic home from home to welcome you back in the evening.

First floor:

Master bedroom with 5ft king bed, window seat and seating area with two tub chairs with views out to sea.

Bedroom with 4ft 6inch bed, chest of drawers, window seat and views out to sea.

Bedroom 3 Twin bedroom with two 3ft single beds and chest of drawers. En suite bathroom with bath and shower over, towel rail, wash basin and WC.

Private patio area with bistro table and chairs directly outside the kitchen window, ideal for an alfresco breakfast or coffee. Steps lead up to an enclosed terraced garden with three levels. Terrace one and two are paved and furnished with bistro tables and chairs. The top terrace is partly grassed with a bench seat.

Please Note: Due to the nature of the garden, being split over three levels, children must be supervised at all times.

Minehead is where Exmoor meets the sea and sits on the edge of the Exmoor National Park. Ideal for lovers of the coast and countryside, the town offers traditional seaside fun with its promenade and mile-long sand and pebble beach, and wonderful views of the Bristol Channel.

The South West Coast Path begins in Minehead, on the quayside, before winding its way around 630 miles of glorious coastline. North Hill, where Exmoor National Park begins, dominates the town and its green slopes can be seen for miles around. It is just a short walk from the centre of town so without venturing far you can enjoy the countryside and even spot red deer and Exmoor ponies.

Popular local activities include fishing trips, boat trips from the harbour to the unspoilt Lundy Island, a visit to the nearby medieval village of Dunster for its ancient castle, stunning gardens and traditional tea rooms, and day trips to the pretty coastal harbour towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. Meanwhile,a day pass for nearby Butlins will keep the kids entertained on days when the beach doesn’t appeal.

A holiday cottage in Minehead is the perfect base for those looking for a coastal holiday with a healthy dose of moorland life just a stone's throw away.

Excellent day especially as one could travel day with a Rover ticket. Very helpful staff as well.

November 2023

We booked a return trip on the railway. Staff were really pleasant and helpful, nice views along the way.

June 2022

Sadly this attraction was not fully operational when we went this time, although we have been on it before and loved it!

June 2021

Sadly closed due to Covid. Lovely little station right in the town. Would most certainly have used it

August 2020

The West Somerset Railway is an absolute must, a really lovely scenic ride with interesting things to see at some of the main stations up and down the line. Chat to the station masters they are so knowledgeable and love to tell you anything and everything they know about the railway. The entire day (two days actually it takes to do it all properly) were just a dream.

November 2019

What a wonderful day out. A special thank you to your volunteer, Les, who took time out to talk to our son about what was coming up and the different noises on his first Steam Train experience.

A delight to visit. The standard of the exhibits is extremely high and the docents knowledgeable and helpful. Adequate and shady car parking and there is a courtesy van that will take you up the hill to the castle - an advantage if the knees are no longer what they were. Dunster village is also well worth the visit - used in the Poirot TV series in the episode "The Cornish Mystery" you'll recognise the market immediately. Recommended!

Lovely place to visit. The walk up is worth it to see the views.

June 2021

Well worth a visit. The views from the castle and the gardens are particularly lovely.

Minehead Beach
(Less than a mile)

(1)

Perpetually featured amongst the best beaches in the area, Minehead Beach is in one of Somerset’s busiest holiday areas. Divided into two sections, The Strand is a wide sand and shingle beach that faces North-to-North West, it looks out across the Bristol Channel towards Wales. Terminus meanwhile is the north-facing part that was almost completely washed away in the early ‘90s. After a multimillion pound project, a sea wall was completed. Today it’s an excellent spot for swimming, kite-surfing and windsurfing. Dog restrictions apply in the summer and there are cafes, restaurants, toilets and shops all close by.

Blue Anchor Bay & Dunster
(4 miles)

(2)

Long sand and shingle beaches peppered with alabaster rocks that are perfect for finding fossils, Blue Anchor Bay and Dunster Beach in Somerset are adjacent to one another, and are beautiful places to while away the afternoon, whatever time of the year. Dogs are allowed on the beaches all year round, which is a novelty, there are toilets close by, and a pub as well for those lazy lunches after a morning’s stroll. The West Somerset Railway comes close to the beach, adding an extra layer of interest, and there’s plenty of parking close to both of them as well, which is always a blessing. The beaches are tidal and can get a little muddy at low tide, so careful not to slip and don’t get caught out when the water comes in!

Porlock Beach
(7 miles)

After 30 miles of Exmoor coastline that’s predominantly cliffs, at Porlock the land flattens out and a unique mile long shingle ridge and an inland salt marsh have formed. It’s a short walk from there to the centre of Porlock, where there are lots of marked footpaths to explore. Porlock Weir Beach itself is a pebble beach that welcomes dogs all year round. It’s a prime spot for swimming, fishing, surfing and sailing, and there are cafes, restaurants, toilets, pubs and shops close by to explore. There is pay and display parking close to the beach, so don’t forget your change when you visit, and you will be pleased to know that the water quality is reputedly excellent.

Lynmouth Beach
(16 miles)

A shingle beach that arcs out into the sea from Lynton, Lynmouth Beach is a popular spot for surfing, but there’s no lifeguard cover so be careful when you go! The area is known for its excellent scenery and pleasant walking along the sea front and along the banks of the Lyn River which flows between the two towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. There is also a cliff railway from Lynton down to the sea front. At Lynton there is a smaller beach with rocks at low tide, while Lynmouth Beach is longer and sandier. Lynmouth has level access all the way along, and there are several car parks in the town as well as road parking by the river and beach. Toilets, cafes and shops are close by, but there aren’t any activities available, it’s all about enjoying the scenery!

Wringcliff Beach
(17 miles)

On the South West Coast Path, Wringcliff Beach is within walking distance of the little town of Lynton and a number of secluded bays along the coastline. The beach itself is a secluded bay surrounded by high cliffs with a steep access path, making it a tricky one to visit if you have small children with you. Of course, because it’s a little difficult to get to, it’s also wonderfully peaceful with incredible views to enjoy. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year around and it’s perfect for adventurous walkers. There’s parking is in the valley of the rocks which is accessed and signposted through Lynton, but once you’re there it’s not that easy to reach toilets and restaurants, to if the weather permits, take a picnic and enjoy the day!

Fantastic location, very friendly neighbours. Loved the cakes on arrival. Had everything we needed for a great weeks stay. Brilliant location for my dog, right on front and onto the beach for Culvercliffe walk. Would book again. Very happy. Thank you.

October 2022

We visited earlier in the year and enjoyed it so much we rebooked for October.

October 2022

Had a great stay. Cottage is very dog friendly and comfortable. The location is ideal - close to the beach and the town but surprisingly quiet. Cakes and biscuits on arrival were a nice touch.

September 2022

A very enjoyable stay

August 2022

We did enjoy the stay and it’s in a great location. We would stay again but there are a few things they need to sort out as listed above.

July 2022

Lovely stay, great location. Needs attention to the problems I have highlighted above.

July 2022

We really enjoyed staying at Sashes. The location was perfect for our holiday.

July 2022

Excellent location, but on arrival interior of fridge not clean, crumbs and smears on ledges.

June 2022

We had a lovely holiday in a really cosy well equipped home with beautiful art work on display in a lovely location.

May 2022

We had a lovely time staying. The cottage was very spacious and had everything we needed. Excellent location.

May 2022

Fantastic place, with all the quirks you would expect of a cottage of this age. It would be helpful for future guests to be aware it isn’t suitable if you have mobility problems, ear imbalances or are over 6ft tall. We loved it and would go again if available. It would be helpful if you updated your webpage to let future dog owners know throws are provided for the furniture. We took our own. Also the art work was lovely and I am sure many guests would buy prints if available. Big thank you to the owner and caretaker for such a high standard of property.

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted you have enjoyed your stay at Sashes.

April 2022

We enjoyed our stay at Sashes. It was comfortable and warm on some very cold days. The location was perfect, close to everything. Enjoyed walking around Minehead, didn't use the car at all on several days. Hopefully we will come back again one day.

Thank you for your feedback. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Sashes.

March 2022

We returned after staying 2 years ago. Had a wonderful stay again. Great local pubs and beach. Really good location in the heart of everything yet very quiet.

October 2021

Had a great time in a lovely cottage. The cakes were a lovely touch and we're delicious.

October 2021

Excellent stay cakes on arrival was very nice touch

September 2021

Much improved since our stay in 2019.Location just right.

June 2021

Having stayed in this area several times before we chose this ideal location. The cottage was comfortable although slightly quirky. The stairs were quite steep and there was NO handrail on one side, and only a partial one on the other side. As I use a walking stick although I am fairly mobile this was a slight problem. The floor levels were also a bit disconcerting too - but no accidents occurred! Slightly annoying that the bathroom upstairs was accessed through a bedroom so at night occupants of the other bedrooms would have to go downstairs to the loo. Also - it would have been nice to have had radios in the kitchen and bedrooms. TV was rather distant from the seating in the lounge and had to be viewed sideways on, as it were. Nevertheless we had a lovely holiday, but I thought you might want to know about our (minor) quibbles. Thank you Toad Hall Cottages.

May 2021

Always enjoy Sashes very comfortable with lovely sea views

May 2021

We felt very comfortable and at home. Cottage is extremely spacious and the tiered garden whilst steep and not easy to access is quirky. View is outstanding. The window seat in the front bedroom was a favourite place to sit. One thing we loved about the property was that there was no list of do's and don't, it helped us to completely relax and enjoy surroundings. The welcome for our 4legged family member is very important to us and Sashes is excellent for this. Thank you. Whilst most places were not open - restrictions still in place. The cafes at either end of the road were frequented. Very nice. Would visit again. A lovely cottage in a beautiful location.

November 2020

Lovely cottage had all we needed, will be booking again can’t waite

October 2020

All we could want. Wouldn’t change anything

October 2020

Thoroughly enjoyed stay. Thinking of booking again

August 2020

Had a lovely relaxing break. First time away with pooch. Kitchen equipped better than mine at home! Location fantastic ! Soooooo quiet. Perfect as quiet but not isolated View of sea from 2 bedrooms again fantastic Bit disappointed with suitability of garden for a timid little dog. TBH this is not the fault of the cottage - it is what it is - but overall bit disappointed that we FELT we couldnt use it or let the dog into it. He would have struggled With so much concrete and so many steep steps Perhaps we should have studied this better prior to booking. There were pics and a description. We should have looked more carefully But with the green area immediately in front of property - with seats- this solved the problem

August 2020

Lovely dog friendly cottage

July 2020

Lovely cottage situated on The Quay approaching Minehead Harbour. Beautiful views from both double bedrooms and with the added bonus of chairs and coffee table in the main bedroom. Very well equipped kitchen with all utensils and gadgets that you would need to prepare any dish. Clean and spacious bathroom facilities on both floors, with a large lounge with 1 large, 1 small sofa and 1 chair. Games galore to play if you wish. Great view from the top of the garden, but you need a head for heights as it is very high with limited space, so not ideal for children. Beach and benches directly opposite the building, and you are nearly a 5 minute walk in both directions for the town or the harbour, with its pub and cafes. An excellent cottage that we would definitely recommend

November 2019

Overall the cottage is beautiful and quirky. Very warm and cosy, which was perfect for the time of year (late October). The cottage was very clean and the beds were ultra comfortable. The views from the front bedrooms were amazing. Lots to do within walking distance.

October 2019

A lovely stay....can't wait to go again !

September 2019

I did enjoy my stay very much, the view of the sea was very relaxing.A very special location too.

September 2019

Fantastic location and property. Home from home and very peaceful. Nice to leave the car and be in walking distance of amenities. Great walking location too for coast and exmoor. Dunster beach just in the next cove is brilliant for dog walking. A location I will be returning too.

September 2019

Two comments above don't stop this from being a good property, and an enjoyable stay. But paying over a £1000 for a week, you expect it to look like the pictures. Also, there was no mention of what to do with recycling? We had to leave it (separated), as the local recycling centre was shut.

September 2019

We had a lovely time and would recommend Sashes and Minehead

August 2019

had a lovley time

June 2019

Yes, we did enjoy our stay. Ideal position for walking by sea & walking to steam railway. Comfy beds. Tom's Fish & Chips is worth queuing & waiting for.

May 2019

1;broken glass on back yard. 2; dirty bath in downstairs bathroom. 3; toilet leaking in upstairs bathroom. we did ring the caretaker who told us to mop up with spare towels. 4; soiled bed linen (can supply photos) So very disappointed as this is our third visit to Sashes as we love it and it has always been spotless.

May 2019

We had a lovely stay. The house is incredibly roomy, the kitchen lovely, the views are beautiful and it's location is perfect as it's on the edge of being in the middle of everything. Thank you to mr and mrs Taylor who helped us with the transistor blew in the bathroom and were very accommodating.

April 2019

Everything was great

April 2019

We really enjoyed our stay in this well-equipped, comfortable cottage. The location is just great, the garden is a bonus, the bedroom with sea view is lovely. There are many thoughtful and much-appreciated touches We have stayed in many cottages in the UK and all over Europe and this has to be one of the very best. We look forward to our next visit. We noticed that there were some reviews that commented on the showers; perhaps you could add in the cottage description that both bathrooms now have over-bath power showers.

March 2019

Lovely cottage with 3 big bedrooms.

February 2019

We had a fantastic week. Great property, fantastic location. Would love to visit again

February 2019

Stayed Christmas 2018 - What a fab place!! We were blessed with warm, dry weather for the whole week. Our dogs loved the beach! We rode the train and over indulged on brilliant food from Stuart Lowen. The cottage was warm, cosy and perfect for us all. Well equipped and the kitchen became a games room most evenings. Thank you to the owners for leaving us a lovely clean house to come in to - We will be back!!

October 2017

We loved everything about the Sashes, especially that we could bring our little dog with us. She is part of the family. The cottage is in an amazing location with breathtaking views and we would recommend your cottages to everyone.

October 2017

Excellent stay as always

September 2017

one or two issues with electrics in hall, no lights 1st night however, after finding what was tripping breaker we managed ok the rest of the week.( seems it was switch in hall way that fed outside porch light & steps) Lovely cottage, great location, dog friendly, thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Really sorry about that electrical issue, but glad it didn't spoil your stay. The owner is rectifying it, but thanks for letting us know.

August 2017

We had a very enjoyable week.

July 2017

We had a lovely time and the house was wonderful! It had everything we needed, and was comfortable and clean. The location was perfect for us as a family. Thank you.

July 2017

We had an absolutely fabulous holiday and as we have found in the past the Toad Hall accommodation was first rate. Lovely cottage, great location and we were able to park outside every day which was a bonus with elderly parents. However the cleaners arrived early and were watching our movements which made us feel a little uncomfortable. This has never happened before with previous rentals.

April 2017

very lovley cottage, well equipped, as it was the first time we had booked a cottage we were not sure what to expect and were surprised at the good standard and did not need to take every thing that we had packed. We would not hesitate to book again with you Thank you

February 2017

The weather was very cold and the radiators in Bedroom 2 and in the upstairs Bathroom were only getting hot half way up. Not a great problem for us as the others were all working fine, but some people may complain.

August 2016

Stayed here based upon a recommendation by a friend who has stayed here twice and we were not disappointed. Beautiful cottage inside and out with lots of little extras to make your stay more enjoyable. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

February 2016

We have thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in this beautifully appointed, spacious and comfortable cottage. Lovely views across the sea.

February 2016

We have had a fantastic few days. The cottage is beautiful; so comfortable and you really couldn't ask for anything more! We have done a bit of sightseeing which has been superb. The owners artwork fits perfectly with the ambiance of the cottage. Can't wait to return.

December 2015

The accommodation was beyond our expectation and the only improvement would be the addition of a shower. The owner had abviously thought thoroughly about what the holiday maker would need for a stress free leisurely stay, also a consideration for any pets. I rang Toad Hall offices several times before our stay date and everyone I spoke to was curtious and helpful.

Thank you very much for your kind review and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Sashes. The owners do hope to add a power shower in the future and appreciate your feedback.

The Toad Hall Team

We are pleased to confirm that there are now showers over the baths in both bathrooms. We hope to welcome you back soon!
