Sway is a small but thriving and busy village surrounded by open forest and countryside. Its famous landmark is Sway Tower, which at 200ft tall can be seen for miles. The tower is also known as Peterson's Folly, after Andrew Peterson who built it on his private estate between 1879–1885.

Sway has a mainline train station (London Waterloo to Weymouth line) and good selection of friendly shops. These include a well-stocked convenience store, Deli and coffee shop, chemist, hairdressers, newsagents and post office. Supermarkets and high street stores can be found in New Milton and Lymington, both only 4 miles away.

Other notable buildings include the pretty Victorian St Lukes C of E church and Artsway - a gallery and arts centre well worth stopping by. It hosts local and international exhibitions as well as educational workshops. The Jubilee Sports Ground offers flood lit tennis courts, football pitch and cricket ground and pavilion. The village community host several events and drama productions throughout the year, the highlight being Sway Carnival – the whole village turns out to cheer on the carnival procession along bunting crowded streets.

You don’t need to leave the village for great food and drink. The Silver Hind serves fabulous food in their restaurant with bar, winning consistent rave reviews, and it’s very dog-friendly too. The Hare and Hounds is a comfy pub with beer garden and designated children’s play area. They serve good value traditional pub fare. We found this to be the best pub around for service and food. As soon as we arrived we were quickly seen to and escorted to a table although we hadn’t booked and it was extremely busy. The person who served us was very professional, attentive, efficient and friendly. The meal itself was first class. We had the fishcakes and these were extremely tasty and well presented. We rated this the best pub for food around the area.

Very welcoming when we walked in. The service and the food were both exceptional. Would highly recommend.

We had a wonderful meal here on 1st June 2023, there is a large varied menu and it was nice not to have chocolate on most of the dessert menu. Patricia.

Fantastic! Traditional New Forest pub that's always busy and always friendly and welcoming. Sunday lunches are amazing and such good value. Usually lots of vegetarian choices too. Also dog-friendly in the main part of the pub though not the restaurant, but the food is the same. Been visiting regularly on holiday for about 20 years and never fails to please!

Had dinner here on the Friday evening, having pre-booked a table. Menu was appealing and extensive and the quality of the food generally excellent I for both quality (although the steak selected by one of us was reported to be 'gristly' and quantity. Service was efficient on what was clearly a busy evening for them.

Really good tea and cakes with gluten free options as well!

A real taste of old fashioned tea room chic. Great tea, lovely surroundings and if you're lucky enough to grab a seat outside and the weather is good, you can watch the world and its animals walk past while cars plunge through the ford.

The Filly Inn
(2 miles)

(17)

Step in to this 17th century inn and you’ll find a warm welcome. Low ceilings, chunky beams and crooked posts and log burners create a homely olde worlde ambience. Outside is a large and spacious beer garden with glorious views over the forest and Roydon woods nature reserve. Food at The Filly has a fine reputation for its generous portions and fresh local produce, showcasing all the New Forest has to offer. Dogs welcome

Brilliant place and great food, staff great too, great potential as it hasn’t been open too long

July 2023

Visited twice during our stay, luckily the weather was so nice we were able to sit outside in the extensive and attractive outdoor seating area which appeared to welcome dogs and their owners. Varied and interesting menu, food well cooked and tasty. Good service.

June 2023

Busy pub and restaurant. Nice atmosphere and good food. Service on a Saturday evening was a little slow, but overall pretty good.

May 2023

A bit of a disappointment here, a very warm welcoming atmosphere but the food was not good value for money and we did not realise that they allowed dogs in the bar/restuarant area until we had been served our meal. We did not go again.

October 2022

Very nice interior and outside seating area, front of house staff very pleasant but kitchen may have been short staffed. Pub was busy from early on with diners and there seemed to be long waits for courses, at one point the chap who appeared to be in charge went into the kitchen to assist (you can see the open kitchen). I has chicken schnitzel which was massive and a very thick chicken breast with fries and green salad which was just iceberg lettuce with Caesar dressing. Tasted good but expected more than lettuce on the side. OH had burger which was very good apparently. No room for dessert.

September 2022

Beautiful pub, good beer. Didn't eat but have been told the food is brilliant.

March 2022

Had 2 really lovely meals here lively setting and cheerful staff

August 2021

July 2021

The Filly Inn is a superb place for a meal, friendly staff, and an amazing outside area to sit in the evening sun with your dinner and a drink.

July 2021

We visited the Filly Inn in September 2019 and spent many a late afternoon in the beer garden. We were disappointed in both January and July 2020 to find it under refurbishment :-(. Hoping it will have reopened again for our next visit.

Barton on Sea
(5 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(6 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

March 2024

A very comfortable and peaceful property.

October 2023

Very enjoyable stay. Comfortable well equipped annexe in peaceful location. Good information provided on walks, local attractions etc.

July 2023

Owners extremely pleasant and helpful without being intrusive.

June 2023

Liz and Keith were excellent hosts and made us very welcome during our stay. The cottage was superb and is perfect for a couple - it had everything we needed and was beautifully situated in the village of Sway. Can definitely recommend visits to The Hare and Hounds (try the liver and bacon) and The Sway Forest Deli (try the bacon sandwich) - Sway Butchers also have some excellent fare! We had a fantastic time and would recommend Southlings Annexe to anyone if they wanted a great base for a holiday in the New Forest!

June 2023

I did enjoy my stay the New Forest is as lovely place and the annex was in a very central area.

May 2023

Very enjoyable and comfortable stay at the annex.

September 2022

we had a lovely week and the owners were very obliging .

September 2022

Had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Southlings in August 22. Made to feel extremely welcome by our hosts, the property itself being of a very high standard, with everything we could possibly need, and in an ideal location. Can highly recommend the Hare and Hounds (literally on the doorstep) for food too!

July 2022

The sofa was so uncomfortable but we enjoyed our stay and the weather was glorious.

July 2022

October 2020

Had a really good break and would recommend this property to friends.

September 2020

Excellent stay, thank you.

September 2020

Perfect area for walking, although dogs outnumbered people ????

September 2020

Very enjoyable stay

August 2020

The owners live next door, they were a very friendly and polite couple.

August 2020

The hosts were both really pleasant and helpful. Having stayed at three of your properties over a recent four week period (two with adjoining hosts and one without), I have concluded that I would probably only stay in holiday homes in future if the hosts are on site or nearby. Knowing help is available 'next door' if needed or just having a chat can make a holiday that important bit more enjoyable.

July 2019

We had a wonderful holiday! The annexe was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. There were lots of special little features that really made it superior to other holiday accommodation like the provision of a picnic basket, notepaper, books, CDs and cleaning materials. It was perfectly located with easy accessibility to all the attractions of the New Forest and the coast. Many thanks.

Lovely hosts at this annexe, hospitality first class. Quiet area with the forest walks on your doorstep and good rail links. Only suggested improvement would be a shower cubicle instead of the over the bath which could be difficult with anyone with a disability.

Apart from the above comments my stay was enjoyable and the village of Sway a very pleasant one to wander round of an evening. The position of the shower over the bath was such that I, at 6ft 7inches, was only just able to stand upright and it would be a good idea to mention this in the property details.

This cottage was perfect for our requirements, well laid out, nicely furnished and very well equipped. Just as important it's in a superb location with all the advantages of a village, good pub, shop etc whilst being very quiet, peaceful and within easy walking distance to good walks. Tall people need to take care in the shower though this should not put anyone off.

Quiet, peaceful stay just what we needed with easy access to all of the new forest.

If you are looking for a tranquill location with ready access to the forest and coast then this is the place for you. A lovely well equiped annexe with friendly owners and convenient private parking. A bedroom ceiling fan proved indispensable during the heatwave. We had a most enjoyable stay and hope to return in the future.

Lovely annexe. So well equipped, everything here, home from home. Comfortable and clean. Surrounding area stunning, cycling near by in New Forest. Hosts very welcoming and good humoured.
