Didn't visit this time but have been before and this pub is in walking distance of Cob cottage

September 2023

Good food and very friendly. Caters for all ages!

July 2023

Not a good experience for us, staff were trying hard to be helpful but were struggling even with the pub empty, very long wait for food, veggie burger was much like a Birds Eye offering and the bolognaise was not good.

July 2021

Excellent value with groupon

October 2018

Used a Groupon voucher which made it Great value. Warm welcome, good portions, lovely home made pie. Pub grub at its best.

September 2018

Very impressed. Food was excellent, Staff very attentive and friendly. We visited twice in the week we were in the area.

June 2018

Very friendly staff, lovely food - we enjoyed the weekly pub quiz.

October 2017

Lovely food and very nice friendly staff we were made to feel very welcome, even took part in the weekly quiz.

September 2017

Popped in here for a pint whilst staying nearby. Traditional pub with a nice sunny spot on the decking with a great view.

April 2017

The Crabshell Inn
(Less than a mile)

(83)

This is a great spot to enjoy a meal or drink of two if you’re in the area, with plenty of outdoor seating taking full advantage of the glorious views over the estuary.  The acclaimed menu is made up of gourmet pizzas, burgers, seafood and lots more including kids options; and the bar has a great atmosphere in the evenings with live music most Fridays.

Superb location, good food. New layout, after a refurb in Dec 23 and bought out by St Austell Brewery, very nice loads more tables and space. Recommend.

January 2024

Stunning location, excellent food, fantastic atmosphere.

September 2023

Fabulous food, great service and a beautiful view

September 2023

Disappointed. Not like how it was in 80s & 90s. Expensive.

September 2023

We love to pop in to the Crabshell in the early evening for a beer and to watch the estuary flowing in and out. We had a delicious pizza too.

July 2023

Popular attraction. Pricey but good food. Very busy on BH weekend in May and had run out of food (except pizza) when we visited. Staff friendly.

June 2023

Very friendly staff. However, over-priced

May 2023

Very lively and friendly pub and only 5 minutes walk away from The Moorings.

April 2023

Wonderful seafood platter, which was absolutely delicious. Don't be put off by the parking, it's worth the challenge!

September 2022

Good position for estuary .car park tight for larger vehicles. Had lunch a little pricey . Food good sauces stingy . Suppose paying for the view and position.

September 2022

Lovely

August 2022

Fabulous!! wonderful location, great food and good service.

August 2022

Fantastic place to eat with a great menu and very good quality food and a good selection of local drinks etc. The restaurant is in a prime location as it sits quayside so the views are fantastic and its a great place to site and relax and take in the stunning views all whist eating great food or just having a drink. The only downside is the lack of parking and the parking that is available is very tight and not easily accessible.

August 2022

Expensive

July 2022

Visited once on a Friday evening.Food and service were great.Very busy and crowded.Music from DJ far too loud and some clientele left a lot to be desired, left with food packed to go.

July 2022

The Crabshell was very convenient for us, and we enjoyed a couple of drinks there as the sun was setting

July 2022

NOT AS GOOD AS IT WAS IN THE ALTE 80`S EARLY 90`S. HAS LOST ALL ITS CHARM & CHARACTER. GOURMET CUISEINE ISNT EVERYONES CUP OF TEA AND WAS ON THE EXPENSIVE SIDE

July 2022

L9vely lication excellent service and good food.

June 2022

Lost its Character from the 80's. Not everyone likes their type of menu and plain fpod should be available too. Don't know their Whiskies from their Brandies. Expensive

June 2022

Too posh food. Nothing for those who like simple food. Don't know theirWhiskies from their Brandys. Lost its character from how it was in the 80's

June 2022

Veery expensive. Lost its character. Menu not for everyone , lacks simple meals for those who don't like "posh" food . Asked what Brandy they had and reply was " Jim Beam, Famous Grouse, Jack Daniels" ?

June 2022

Beautiful surroundings. Charming, helpful staff and superb food. Sadly parking is a real issue though. There are probably pay and displays nearby but we had a toddler and a disabled diner. A couple of excellent gins soon sorted it out though!!!!

June 2022

Food was very good. Service was quick and friendly. On some evenings the music was too loud.

June 2022

Nice place in a lovely location to have a drink and something to eat.

June 2022

Fabulous restaurant with challenging tiny car park. Take a small vehicle or walk but worth it!

June 2022

Great seafood and service

June 2022

Food is good, but could be better and is overpriced. Most staff friendly but there are a few who need to smile a bit more. Bar staff were great

June 2022

Excellent fish & chips, first time we've been able to get a table now it's first come first served

June 2022

We have visited the venue many times, never disappoints. Great location, good selection of dishes to cover most peoples dietary requirements. One of our favourite places.

May 2022

Great place to eat and relax

May 2022

Disappointed that the balcony was not open to customers ( staff only! ) We have always enjoyed sitting in the sun up there.Drinks quite costly.

May 2022

We loved the staff great atmosphere.. chicken wings and pizza a must

Food and service excellent. Would be happy to eat here any time.

November 2021

Lovely seafood platter, enjoyed al fresco.

November 2021

Lovely location for a sundowner at the end of a day overlooking the water. Equally good for dinner - lovely food with friendly staff.

October 2021

afraid that this place has now had its day - menu choice so poor we did not eat and needs a very good clean - we always ate here when in Devon - sorry now off the list

October 2021

Beautiful location overlooking the harbour .Food very good quality .

October 2021

Went at lunchtime had excellent food. Unfortunately was booked up on the evenings we wanted to go but that shows how good it is here

September 2021

Excellent pub with very good food

September 2021

If you visit Kingsbridge the Crabshell is a must!! Delicious food, friendly staff and amazing views!!

September 2021

Excellent meal in lovely waterside location.

September 2021

Great food and atmosphere

August 2021

We visited the Crabshell one lunchtime during our weeks holiday and found the service very good and the food we had was good. Having read about their infamous pizzas we decided to have them as takeaways one night. Unfortunately we were not that impressed and thought they were overpriced.

August 2021

Need to book well in advance. Couldn’t get a table 3 weeks in advance but had takeaway pizza. These were of a good standard.

July 2021

Although very busy and unable to pre book tables, we timed our daily visits perfectly (mostly with the tides) and managed to get a table. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, food was amazing too.

July 2021

Unfortunately it was closed when we were there.

July 2021

great for coffees and snacks and paddle boarding facility, but some of the serving staff were very grumpy!!

June 2021

Great place to eat in a great location. Nicola on front of house did a great job trying to find tables for people. Staff were friendly as well.

June 2021

Really lovely food and great prices. The kids loved the pizzas in particular

November 2020

Great location, great service and the freshest fish and chips ever.

October 2020

Location is the primary reason why people visit, as on a sunny day its wonderful to sit outside. The food is good but not great, and slightly overpriced, but I would go again if visiting the area again.

October 2020

Lively place, we sat by the water and watched the tide come in. Nice selection of beers and wine, decent food but dunno why they shut the salad bar at 8.30? Vegans go to bed early, do they?

October 2020

Great food, fab service and nice location

October 2020

Very hit and miss which given the prices isn't really good enough. Crab sandwich served in a brioche bun ? Thin Mac n cheese. Probably give this a miss next time

September 2020

Fabulous views from both outside if the weather is nice and inside, the food is yummy, also we felt the handling of the ever changing rules were handled very well and we felt the cleanliness and safety precautions well thought out, the staff were friendly and very helpful, just wished it was our local pub ....

September 2020

During Covid-19 this place was initially suitably prepared when we arrived & we felt safe inside the restaurant. The food menu was great but no drinks menu- the waitress did not volunteer what was available to drink when we asked & it took us to ask her before she could advise us what was available. Food was largely excellent although several of the mussel shells were closed. The one in and out policy in the toilets was not monitored which meant it was largely ignored & these were not as clean. I think in a pre Covid 19 world, this place would be a fun experience but there seems to be quite a bit of learning required when the place is busy & some instruction on providing either a drinks or wine menu or ensuring staff know is available rather having to extract this through interrogation!

August 2020

enjoyable meal and helpful polite staff

July 2020

Great food and service!

July 2020

Parking is a problem. Limited seating. Food only average for the price. Lovely location adjacent to the river.

October 2019

Friendly and attentive service and generous well cooked dishes in a lively atmosphere.

September 2019

A warm welcome and wonderful food which was a good mixture of the known and the adventurous - something for everyone, even vegetarians!

June 2019

Have been coming here for many years and the food remains of a very high standard.

June 2019

The best meal of our holiday! And we had eaten really well and had some lovely meals. But this was something else. The food was delicious. Full of taste. Vibrant. Different. The staff were friendly, welcoming and knew their stuff.

April 2019

Amazing food and friendly staff. A great atmosphere during the summer months and warm and cosy in winter.

January 2019

Restaurant is in a great location, good seafood and dogs allowed. We had a very nice lunch.

October 2018

Good if you like pizza. On the expensive side compared with other venues

September 2018

Amazing fish platter! Loved this place so much we went twice, second time we had mussels which again were amazing

August 2018

Rubbish customer service! Rang on 2 weekend days and 2 week days. Too busy Friday and Saturday “wouldn’t even bother coming in to wait”was the comment when we telephoned each time to book for 4 on any evening. On one of the weekdays, “I’d struggle to get you even pizzas later”; on the other, “We’re not fully booked but we’re busy so can’t book you in”! Absolutely rubbish! If I could press zero stars, I would!!!

August 2018

tried to book for the Friday night but was told it was fully booked but still come along as walk in customers, we did and got a table about 20 mins later, nightmare trying to get a drink at the bar whilst waiting for the table. The chicken burger was the best. The place is very busy and a lovely atmosphere, would go there again

July 2018

Lovely location but food a bit chaotic! When we visited they had run out of several menu options but didn’t tell us when we were given the menus. Also, when one of the dishes we had ordered arrived it wasn’t as described on the menu but no explanation or apology was given. Expensive for what it was.

July 2018

Lovely place on the waterfront, good food and drinks.

July 2018

Excellent service inside because outside was, as always full, even with an England match on. Food was really good and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We will return next year.

July 2018

Good food, great atmosphere with views over estuary. Very good selection of Gluten free food.

June 2018

Great food. Perfect to sit outside on a summer day

June 2018

Lovely cuppa before and after paddle boarding with Waterborn which is situated next door. Excellent waterfront location and friendly staff.

May 2018

A nice meal here. Great staff and quality food.

March 2018

Fab food and friendly staff

October 2017

Great place. We only stopped for coffee and take out from the Deli but worth a visit. Staff were very friendly and it's very dog friendly.

September 2017

We had a fantastic meal here during a paddle boarding weekend and we were definitely not disappointed. The scallops were cooked to perfection. The place has a great atmosphere as well as great food. We booked in advance which was probably a good idea as it was very busy.

September 2017

Lovely food and staff were very nice and helpful would go again.

September 2017

Lovely food and great atmosphere

May 2017

Loved the pizzas and watching paddle boarders go by.

December 2016

Love this place. Great spot on the estuary, good selection of local ales and decent food too.

It's always a pleasure to spent time in this pub (or outside this pub, watching the world go by). An excellent selection of drinks served by friendly staff! Unable to comment on the food as didn't eat here.

September 2023

Excellent food with friendly staff

September 2023

This is the 'go to' pub for drinks and food

August 2023

Nice location at the end of the creek, but service and quality of food is not very good. OK for having a drink outside on the market square.

August 2023

Good friendly pub, with a varied selection of beverages. Unfortunately when we visited, food unavoidable.

July 2023

Excellent, Terry and all of his staff were helpful, considerate and friendly. Nothing to much trouble.

May 2023

June 2022

The best breakfast had for while, lovely staff and to sit outside and watch the world go by was a delight.

May 2022

Been here many times on our visits to Kingsbridge, did feel that this time the quality and variety of the food was not of the usual standard.

April 2022

Excellent food and beer. Coping brilliantly with COVID restrictions. Well done!

September 2021

nice relaxing setting on the town square

September 2021

It was very ordinary the day we went for lunch. The staff were very busy but one of the younger, blonde haired waitresses spent quite a lot of time chatting to people at one table, leaving the others running around and customers waiting a long time for service. Eventually one of the other staff members asked her to get back to work and things improved a bit. Food was decent quality but just ordinary pub food, nothing special. Nice setting though.

July 2021

Good pub grub with excellent service but just as enjoyable to sit outside with a drink

May 2021

Service rather slow but we enjoyed a good cup of tea there.

April 2021

Had a lovely cream tea and coffee there too. Very attentive particularly bearing in one the Covid situation

September 2020

Excellent food and service. Great value for money. Lovely staff.

September 2020

Very welcoming and excellent supper when we visited last Friday evening.

December 2019

This is the place we had to collect the keys to our holiday accommodation. The staff were polite, cheerful and welcoming and wished us well during our stay. We ate here only once, not because we didn't like it but because we like to explore a lot and consequently eat at lots of different places. The food here was adequate, not stunning, but cooked properly and presented well (apart from not putting all the items from the menu on your plate ie the £11.95 crispy chilli beef dish my wife had was missing the bok choy and bean sprouts) but tasted delicious none-the-less and the £10.95 mushroom and cashew nut stroganoff was okay - portions were good. The atmosphere was lively, cheerful, a little noisy perhaps but not rowdy, everyone having a good time, not necessarily a good place for a quiet intimate meal for two (might be a quiet corner somewhere at the back)! There is no dedicated parking apart from the Pay and Display car park which is almost adjacent anyway (£1 minimum charge). We would certainly come again if in the area.

November 2019

Love this place, especially the live bands at the weekend. Great food and welcoming hosts.

October 2019

Fantastic Sunday roast dinner! Really surpassed our expectations. Waitresses were so helpful and friendly too.

November 2023

Ideal location food and drinks excellent nice atmosphere friendly staff

September 2023

Great food, friendly, helpful staff and good prices, would definitely go back again if we stay in the area again.

May 2023

We visited this pub twice while on holiday, not only was the food fantastic and the pub really fresh and well decorated, their treatment of our nervous whippet was so lovely, the kind and caring way she was prioritised has restored some of my faith in human nature and the gentleman who supplied the gravy bones ( I didn’t get his name but he knows who he is) really was the kindest and most lovely member of staff I could wish to meet. I wish we had a local pub like this where we live and will recommend you to all my friends, family and doggies!

May 2023

Visited early on a Sunday afternoon for lunch having arrived late Saturday.Place was virtually empty with two waitresses twiddling their thumbs and a manager who was quite aggressive and confrontational. We were told that there was no room for us as we had not booked and he only had two chefs on that day so could not accommodate any extras.Amazed that a business, apparently so popular according to him, could afford to turn away two customers who wanted one course and been away in less than an hour.We were told to book for 6 p.m. and thee might be some Sunday lunch left if we were lucky.Such a shame as we were hoping to eat here a few times so went elsewhere as he suggested and was very happy with what we found.Did not go back and am sure we were not the only ones.

July 2022

Visited for the first time in several years and was very satisfied. Food, service and ambience very good and probably the best pub food in Kingsbridge town

June 2022

Great place to eat and drink, friendly staff, especially Mark the General Manager.

June 2022

We ate here after visiting many times before. Were not disappointed, the food and service were excellent.

April 2022

Had a Sunday roast of slow cooked belly pork and a last night of lamb shank Really good food and service Staff very helpful and welcoming. 10/10.

October 2021

Excellent food and service.

October 2021

'Staff shortages' might be acceptable for slow food service in a pub but not drinks. Dogs and food hygiene are not compatible.

October 2021

First class service and food. Booked in advance and were given a lovely table.

September 2021

Had an excellent meal at Seven Stars. Really good service friendly staff and excellent food.

September 2021

Very good meals and service.

September 2021

Lovely friendly staff. Had drinks one night and roast another, great leg of lamb

August 2021

Amazing customer service and food. The toilets however were in a disgusting state.

November 2020

We didn't eat here as intended because they only had one meat option for their non carvery Sunday Lunch, so we only had coffee, which was fine. There was a selection of seating options and there seemed a good friendly atmosphere with laid back but efficient staff, however, the doors weren't opened till after advertised opening time so people were waiting outside for about ten minutes... thankfully it was a nice sunny day. The pub has limited parking, however, if full it is not far from the main car park.

November 2019

Started using this in 2005. Was the place and getting a seat was very difficult. Personally think it has priced itself out of the market. No problems in finding a table nowadays. Pints are always short and the landlady/owner is not too pleased when you ask to be " topped up". I was told she had to watch her spillages but this is not my problem. At £4.20 a pint! I expect a pint!

September 2018

Excellent

July 2018

Good service

June 2018

we are very disapponted in The Seven Stars. The service was appalling, very long waiting time. We understand that during holiday season one has to wait long but this was due to the attitude of the waitress. We visited this attraction two times and after the second time we decided never to go there again. I ordered a grilled plaice and the fish was just not cooked. I told the waitress that I wanted the fish very well done and she snapped at me that the fish was well done. I couldn't eat it and sent it back. I still had to pay seventeen pounds for an uncooked fish and the the plate was taken away I mentioned this to the waiter. He just hummed and walked away without even apologizing. They were just not interested. Although the first time we ate there was not terible and the starter was good food I would certainly not recommend this attraction. The toilet was filthy as well.

August 2017

Nice pub. Food was ok. Friendly staff and reasonable prices

April 2017

Best pub food in Kingsbridge and very friendly.... good outside sitting area

Went here as a family of five and had a great time paddle boarding.Well looked after by Crispin and Steve. Great fun as well once you sort your wobbly legs out.

June 2021

My Son & I had a great time taking part in this for the 1st time. Crispin was very caring, patient and a brilliant instructor. It poured of rain but it remained warm despite the early start! This did not dampen our enthusiasm & Crispin did offer to curtail the 1 of the 2 hours and refund us but we were enjoying ourselves far too much! We both ended up in the estuary for a swim anyway! Absolutely brilliant 2 hours & highly recommended.

August 2020

Our two hour early morning session was absolutely brilliant, thank you Crispin, we'll be back!

August 2019

Fantastic early morning session with Crispin - got us two oldies up on our feet paddling around the Kingsbridge estuary - what a fabulous way to start the day. Five star - would like to do it again.

May 2018

Very enjoyable - will definitely do it again. Crispin was very helpful.

September 2017

Thank you Crispin for a fab family lesson introducing us and our 3 girls to paddle boarding

An integral part of our holiday, er always treat the ferry as a miniature cruise.

October 2023

We caught the ferry twice, firstly in the sunshine, and we enjoyed the scenery, we caught the bus back too which was very easy. The second time it was a bit chilly so the lovely lady on the boat gave us a cosy blanket for the journey. It’s good not to have to park in Salcombe too.

July 2023

Fabulous but a bit on the pricey side

August 2022

First time on this new ferry, had been on old one several times.Did not disappoint.Crew were pleasant, informative and spent time talking with everyone.

July 2022

Great trip

July 2022

GREAT BOAT AND FRIENDLY STAFF . NOT ENOUGH CREEK ETC CRUISES. WAS EXPENSIVE £11 FOR ONE WAY

July 2022

A must for first timers to the area in particular but we have been coming for many years and still do the trip. Pretty ride and the couple operating it were very friendly and helpful, particularly helping my husband on and off the boat. Bit pricey but we went down on the boat and back on our free bus passes so we weren’t really restricted on ferry times

June 2022

Lovely but expensive. Lacked Creek Cruises, during our stay. Only 2 were on offer.

June 2022

Lovely trip down to Salcombe. Louise was a very good host and had lots of useful information

June 2022

Excellent service to Salcombe. It was a lovely way to travel to Salcombe- without the traffuc! We got the bus back as the tide wasn’t in again until much later, but that was very easy too.

June 2022

Excellent if rather breezy return from Salcombe. Would definitely use again when we visit next June

September 2021

very pleasant boat ride back into Salcombe

September 2021

Enjoyable boat trip to Salcombe .

September 2021

Quite expensive but a really enjoyable way of getting to Salcombe for a day out. More fun than driving. Can return by bus to Kingsbridge or West Alvington if necessary

August 2021

Staff on board extremely friendly and approachable. Great way to get to salcombe. No return only if you wish to come straight back. We caught the bus back to kingsbridge

August 2021

Lovely return trip from Salcombe, friendly, helpful crew. Prompt, efficient service, just a little bit pricey.

July 2021

Sadly it wasn't running when we were there, very disappointing!!!

South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Walks and Trails
South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Walks and Trails
(Less than a mile)

(13)

We have said it before and we will say it again, the reason South Devon attracts so many visitors and captures their hearts is because it really is a phenomenally beautiful part of the world, and as such is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in many areas. So walking is a great pleasure when you’re on holiday here, especially as there are over 40 routes in the AONB itself, ranging in length from two to 12 miles. They are a wonderful opportunity to explore the wildlife, archaeology and history of South Devon, as well as the views and scenery along the way.

Beautiful walks everywhere with stunning views along the coastal path

September 2023

Lots of places to access coastal path. We joined it from Start point and visited the lighthouse.

July 2023

Stunning array of various walks around the area - consult the web site for some easy to follow routes. Very steep in places but the scenery is worth it.

October 2021

Stunning scenery and beautiful, sometimes challenging hikes on the coast path stretches. I was very lucky I had gorgeous weather.

September 2021

Wonderful walk in the sunshine along the coastal path from Garra Rock to Mill Bay. Well signposted. The road to Garra Rock is not for the fainthearted!

September 2021

Fantastic circular walk from East Portlemouth (catch the water taxi first from Salcombe) then follow the coastal path through woods and out on to stunning cliff top views for two miles until you reach Gara Rock Hotel which is something special then take the shorter return walk downhill through the woods.

July 2021

The coastal paths are wonderful.

July 2021

Bantham to Thurlestone Walk is lovely. Also the walk out to the lighthouse would recommend!

October 2020

Our apartment owners recommended Bolberry Down as somewhere to park ( NT Car Park) and enjoy the super views, even in the rain. It proved to be an excellent suggestion and we found paths from the Car Park that were easy to walk as well as the Oceans Restaurant which was good apart from not offering their sandwich menu during Sunday Lunch.

October 2019

Whether you want a strenuous walk or a gentle stroll there are wonderful coastal and countryside walks in this area of Devon.

September 2019

Visit to the East Soar walkers hut with its self service cream tea is a must as part of a circular work in that area

September 2018

Outstanding restaurant. Have ben using it since 2005 and always book beforehand to ensure a table. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. Ready to book for next year.

September 2018

Walked the South West Coastal path from Plymouth to Hope Cove - fantastic!

Singing Paddle
Singing Paddles
(2 miles)

(5)

There’s no doubt about it, the best thing to do on a holiday in South Devon is get outside and have a waterside adventure, and Singing Paddles aim to help you do just that. Offering canoeing and coaching with more than 30 years of experience, the team are careful to operate a carbon neutral company funding local tree planting, hedge reinstating and using a grey water system to clean equipment. Paddling is an environmentally friendly water sport, and they offer a variety of sea kayaking and canoeing options for individuals and for groups starting at £15 for an individual session to £250 for a tailor made day.

What a treat, lovely experience with a well informed guide.

June 2023

Great evening paddle with Dave for our family of four, all enjoyed very much.

July 2021

We feel incredibly lucky and privileged to have been on Slapton Ley with Singing Paddles. Our guide was really informative and kept it interesting enough to keep our 8 year old engaged. We learned so much about the history of the Ley, about it's eco-diversity and the various conservation projects. Highly recommend.

Very professional

Have been on several tours with Singing Paddles and have always enjoyed them. Really good fun and feels like you had a good workout by the end!

Harbour House Art Gallery
Harbour House Art Gallery
(2 miles)

(3)

Harbour House Centre for Arts and Yoga sits in pride of place in Kingsbridge overlooking the estuary and offers yoga, meditation, Pilates and Tai Chi classes, a vegetarian café and art exhibitions in one beautiful, light filled environment. Friendly, healthy and holistic, they host local artists and a variety of artistic styles, but it’s not merely about observing, it’s about getting involved, so they also have life drawing, painting and arts classes available. The café overlooks the art gallery, adding another dimension to your lunch, but classes are popular, so while you can pop into most exhibitions, it’s a good idea to phone and check availability for classes before you turn up! Full details of timetables and current events on the site!

Had a delicious and relaxing lunch-would certainly return.

September 2019

Great Place for Great Art with an ever changing selection of exhibitions. It seems to be the beating heart of Kingsbridge.

June 2019

A decent enough café, with reasonable coffee and a pleasant ambience, alongside a local art gallery with (when we visited) an eclectic mix of art and artifacts. And if you're into yoga, my guess is that any type of yoga you can imagine is available here. If the weather's nice, the rear courtyard garden is quite pleasant, too.

Sunny Cove
Sunny Cove
(3 miles)

(7)

Accessed either by boat, via a 10-minute walk through the woods from parking at Mill Bay, or a stroll from the Salcombe to East Portlemouth Ferry, Sunny Cove is a sandy beach which, as you might expect, catches the sun throughout the day, weather pending. It’s on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary opposite North Sands beach and Fort Charles, the ruined fortification that was originally constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the Kingsbridge Estuary against French and Spanish Pirates. It’s a relatively gentle spot for swimming and ideal for picnics, lazy summer afternoons, and reaching on kayaks and paddle boards from other nearby beaches as well as being the perfect spot for building sandcastles. That said, the tide can come in quite quickly so make sure you don’t get caught out and be careful of the swell when bringing boats into the beach. Head there for the day in the summer or as a stop off en route to the café at Gara Rock or a longer walk along the coast path towards Prawle Point. Dogs are welcome all year round but keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities in the immediate vicinity (it would be a 10-15-minute walk along wooded footpaths) so take your sandwiches with you!

Gorgeous, quiet and very clean beach.

June 2023

Stunning bay ,Quiet and secluded

October 2021

Lovely little beach worth the walk or paddle!

July 2021

We didn’t know about this. Whilst appreciating the need to keep things to a minimum, local information like this could have been uploaded digitally. We made 2 attempts to locate a beach without success.

October 2020

The beach and the views were superb

September 2019

A nice sandy beach, crowded on a sunny day. but access quite tricky - a long walk for children if no room in the NT car park, and then a long walk back afterwards.

August 2019

Best reached by direct boat access but easy enough walk from ferry or mill bay car park. Our favourite beach.

August 2018

North Sands
North Sands, Salcombe
(3 miles)

(17)

The first beach as you walk along the Cliff Road out of Salcombe, North Sands sits in a valley and is a sandy horseshoe shaped beach that’s expansive at low tide. Thanks to its shape and location, it’s extremely popular in the summer because there’s plenty of space to set up camp for the day with buckets, spades and fishing nets in tow for avid marine biologists and sand castle connoisseurs. The beach has a fresh water stream running through it from the top of the valley, which, aside from providing hours of entertainment for accompanying dogs and a marvellous place to wash the sand off your feet, also means that the beach is largely wet sand, so don’t forget to take something to sit on if you’re heading there for the day. Popular with swimmers, despite the chilly water, North Sands provides a wonderful view out of the mouth of the Salcombe estuary and into the deep blue yonder so, for keen photographers, it’s ideal. If the weather is right then it’s a favourite amongst body boarders or even surfers on choppier days, and it’s a great place to take the paddle boards and kayaks if you happen to have them. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, unlike many of the beaches in the area, there are toilets over the road and there’s a car park with charges from £1 throughout the year. The cherry on top of this beautiful location is The Winking Prawn café and restaurant that’s right next to the beach. Open all year round they serve everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner to coffee, tea and cake, and in the summer they provide a barbecue in the garden overlooking the sea. It is popular though so leave a little time to queue for that Salcombe Dairy honeycomb ice cream in the height of summer!

October 2023

Very nice beach. Very clean.

July 2023

A great dog friendly beach. Check the tide times, go at low tide, makes a fabulous beach to look for shells, relax in the sun, and walk in the stuff with your dog.

May 2023

Excellent beach for dogs

May 2023

Nice beach it's great dog friendly beach

May 2023

What a beautiful place to walk to along Coast Road from Salcombe town. The view through the trees to the amazing colour of the water is breathtaking and North Sands is spectacular. We could have sat just people watching all day. The winking prawn is a lovely place for a drink or bite to eat.

July 2022

June 2017

Mill Bay
(3 miles)

(29)

A sandy beach on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary, at low tide Mill Bay stretches all the way up the coastline to East Portlemouth beach. It has the most wonderful view of Salcombe itself and is popular with everyone, especially families, because of the large swathes of sand on which you can set up camp for the day and enjoy safe, clean swimming conditions. Parking is limited, so the best way to get to it is either by boat or by catching the East Portlemouth Ferry from Salcombe and strolling along. That way you can also nip past The Venus Café by the slipway to pick ice creams, sandwiches and refreshments before settling in for the day. There are rock pools to explore, sandcastles to build and swimming to be done, just make sure you’re careful of any boats coming in and out of the beach. Dogs are welcome at Mill Bay all year round, and it makes an excellent spot to run around with them whatever time of the year. Like the other beaches along this stretch of coast, Mill Bay makes for an ideal place to spend the day right into the evening, although it is a little stroll to the nearest facilities. It’s also a lovely beach to meander across en route towards Gara Rock or on a longer walk along the coast path.

June 2022

Gorgeous little Bay close to where we were staying our dog. Loved fetching his ball in and out the water. Very pretty spot.

April 2022

Lovely beach and you can walk to Gara rock from here and along beach to the ferry crossing to salcombe

March 2022

Great beach. Bumpy access road as sand has blown across it. Slightly marred by 1-2 selfish dog owners who have left their calling cards

November 2021

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on this beautiful beach. Fabulous place ??

September 2021

Fantastic beach one of the best in the area. Have to get to car park (National Trust) very early if you don't want to carry all your stuff to the beach.

September 2021

We attempted to drive to Mill Bay car park- not a good idea in August! No parking spaces, no turning points. We tried another day, parking at Gara Rock and asking down the bridle path. We have a disabled granddaughter, the walk down was manageable but the return walk was much more difficult. Beautiful beach and worth the walk.

September 2021

Lovely, clean, sandy beach in wonderful location with beautiful views and easy access from Salcombe via the East Portlemouth ferry.

August 2021

Lovely beach, clear water

July 2021

Lovely beach for children to play on.

June 2021

Favourite beach going back to my childhood. The road to it was closed due to a land slip in January. Talked to the workmen who said it was due to reopen November 2020.

October 2020

Lovely beach but this year overrun with people arriving by motor boat- so it felt a little worrying for kids to swim out among them,(and frankly it spoilt the view) and engine noise/fumes at the end of the day as everyone left!

September 2020

Wonderful

September 2019

I endorse all of the other favourable comments and emphasise the urgent need to make the lavatories hygienic. In fact all of the public conveniences are anything but convenient.

September 2019

Lovely beach, handy to have little food caravan selling crepes, drinks and ice cream, good quality too. The toilets were disgusting though and should have been cleaned more regularly, also waste bins overflowing.

August 2019

Great place for a day on the beach. Safe and dog friendly

August 2019

Lovely large sandy beach, perfect for young children who want to play in the strem and build dams, or play in the sea without large waves!

July 2019

Great beach

October 2018

A fabulous beach. Especially great fun at low tide for a water loving Labrador. We enjoyed our visits here. We also loved the passenger ferry from here to Salcombe. Beautiful beach.

October 2018

Beautiful beach lovely and clean. Small car park free to N.T. members. Highly recommended. Drawback no immediate café available. Venus café nearest but a trek if not mobile.

September 2018

Lovely beach well worth a visit. Dog friendly as well. Well worth the £7-50 national trust car parking fee.

July 2018

amazing beach, dog friendly, only downside is the toilets near the National Trust hut are very poor

July 2018

South Milton Sands
South Milton Sands
(4 miles)

(45)

A long stretch of sand broken only by the South Milton Ley freshwater reed bed, South Milton Sands is a dramatic beach that’s exposed to the elements, making it something of a chameleon throughout the year. Rugged in its beauty, there’s nothing quite like watching the sun set at this beach behind an iconic rock archway in the water; it really is spectacular, particularly if you do so over dinner in the summer months from The Beach Café, a small but perfectly formed restaurant and café that’s perched just above the sand. If you want a table inside then you really do have to book this one, but if the weather is fine then eating outside is a joy. The beach is sandy and popular on windy days with kite surfers and windsurfers, but in calmer weather is perfect for a summer swim. Dogs are welcome at South Milton throughout the year, there’s a National Trust car park by the beach which costs from £5 for the day, £3 after 4pm or is free for National Trust members. There are also toilets nearby. It’s also worth knowing that in the summer months lifeguards are in situ from 6th July until 8th September, keeping everyone safe in the sun, sea and sand. When the weather is less conducive to sitting and admiring the view, South Milton is perfectly placed for a stroll along the coast path either towards Hope Cove and around towards Salcombe if you fancy making a day of it, or in the opposite direction you can walk towards Bantham and Bigbury on Sea. It’s a wonderful place to explore and watch Devon’s wildlife in all its glory.

We love this all year round very dog friendly beach. Great even when the tide in. Plenty of parking and a great cafe to boot.

October 2023

Beautiful beach and we had the added bonus of the Rockbox pop up bar being directly behind. If you are staying in hope cove it is worth the 20 minute walk to get here as much better than the hope cove beaches, also has toilet facilities.

October 2021

Lovely beach. Great for dogs too. The car park is owned by national trust and if you don’t have any money for the parking you need to download the app. Problem there is no signal once you are there to pay for your parking! Best bring change.

July 2021

Lovely beach. Great catering facilities and clean, free lavatories. The car park is large and as a member of the National Trust parking was free (usually £6)

September 2020

Perfect safe and sandy beach. Lovely and fairly easy walk to/from Hope Cove with great views along the way.

August 2020

Fabulous sandy beach with lots of rock pools to explore at low tide. Ideal for children and dig friendly too

August 2019

Fantastic to be able to walk dogs down there. Nice cafe. Could do with dog poo bag bins on or near beach Car parking expensive just to be on beach for half an hour

August 2019

Great beach! Also we enjoyed being able to rent paddle boards.

August 2019

South Milton sands is a beautiful beach. Arrive early to get a good parking space as it does get quite busy. The beach is sand and shingle. £5 per day for parking, great value. The only shame is that there were too many paddle boards getting in the way of swimmers. Maybe a cordened off area for swimmers would be better.

August 2019

We walked over from Hope Cove and found it a pretty unattractive beach with a massive pipe leading out to sea and a horrible sewage smell. Happy we hadn't bothered to go there for a day out!

July 2019

We loved this beach and returned a number of times during our stay. Safe shallow water for the family with some good waves for body-boarding as the tide came in and friendly life guards in attendance all day! Easy access from the car park - facilities nearby and dog friendly - everything we needed! We also enjoyed the cliff top walk to nearby hope cove on one afternoon.

July 2019

A lovely beach with plenty to look at. Dogs are allowed - very good for children if supervised.

June 2019

Lovely beach, stunning views and a safe place for children to rock pool, and swim. Spoiled for us by the large numbers of kite surfers dominating the water along with the surf school who took little account of those families enjoying the beach ordering people out of the water when they had a schooling session on. Words were had. They need to understand it isn't their property and if people want to enjoy the beach, they need to move to a spot where they aren't bothering people. Good car parking and a nice little cafe selling cakes/flapjacks and coffee with WC next to it, so beach-goers are well catered for. Could have done without the thump thump music and bar flies in shades but that's typical of many such places these days. On the whole a great beach with decent accessibility via car or foot and preferable in many ways to the larger beach at Thurlestone during peak times, and preferable to the beaches at Hope Cove when busy.

June 2019

great beach only bad thing is its owned by the national trust and parking is £5.00 no matter how short or long you want to stay no option of paying by the hour

October 2018

A great beach but at £5 a day to visit (National Trust!) rather expensive. Variable rate better.

October 2018

Excellent beach, well maintained and dogs allowed all year round. Great range of activities to enjoy from swimming, snorkelling, SUP, kite surfing, kayaking and scrambling when the tide is out. Loved it and will return

June 2018

Amazin beach - especially when the tide goes out and all the rock pools come out to play!!! Shame about the coarse 'sand', but that can't be helped; just get some shingle shoes. If you want sand go to North Sands or Bantham!

August 2017

A glorious beach! Dog friendly, sandy, rock pools at the far end. Parking handy, spectacular views - the stone arch beats Durdle Door in my mind..... Delightful. Loved it.

July 2017

Leas Foot Sands
Leas Foot Sands
(4 miles)

(8)

A small sandy beach belonging to Thurlestone Golf Club, those who have been on regular Devon weekend breaks and holidays will have seen this beach change somewhat in recent years thanks to storm damage, but the evolving landscape merely adds to its charm. A 200-metre walk down a paved path from the golf club and its car park and you find yourself heading down a gentle slope onto the sand, with the option of enjoying the beach in its own right or walking along the coast in either direction towards Bantham or South Milton Sands. Dogs are allowed here at any time, which of course adds to the appeal for walkers, and if you fancy stopping somewhere for lunch then Thurlestone village nearby is home to a charming pub that’s cryptically named The Village Inn, which is suitable for the whole family and wonderfully cosy in the winter months. Alternatively head to the Beachhouse café at South Milton for lunches and evenings meals with a view of the sunset, or cups of tea and brownies from the Gastrobus at Bantham. It is one of the area’s quieter beaches, often acting as a place to wander past rather than one to spend the whole day on, but given its easy access and the proximity of the car park, and the golf club, it’s a delightful little spot in which to while away the afternoon.

June 2021

December 2020

We like this beach. We walk to it from the property we stay in in Thurlestone. It's always quiet. There are lovely views out to sea and you really feel close to nature when swimming. There is good sand, some rocks on either side of the beach, it's easy to access and we usually walk home along the coast path for more lovely views.

August 2019

Great quiet beach with wonderful coastal walk alongside gold course round to Bantham. Parked free in field adjacent to golf club, although we understand they will be charging for parking soon. Only downside was that the public toilets were closed - we went October 2018.

November 2018

This is possibly the best beach in the whole of England

July 2017

September 2023

Very enjoyable peaceful location

July 2023

We felt at home the minute we got to Walnut cottage. The owners were extremely welcoming and friendly. The surrounding area is so pretty, and great for walks. We loved Kingsbridge and walking along the estuary which is really only 5 minutes drive from Walnut cottage. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and a lovely fish and chip shop. From Kingsbridge it was so easy to get around. We drove to some places but found the buses so convenient and it was nice to sit back and see the views. We would definitely return to Kingsbridge and Walnut cottage.

Owners lived on site, should there have been any problems, which there weren't, and were both friendly and welcoming without being intrusive. Excellent property with all facilities needed provided. Excellent peaceful location but close to Kingsbridge where all facilities were available. Excellent base to explore the South Hams.

Lovely welcoming hostess who made us feel very welcome. The house was spotless and very comfortable. The country lanes were not for the faint hearted!

Nice welcome from the hosts. We appreciated the flowers and flapjacks. Best equipped kitchen we've come across in a holiday cottage.

Great hospitality from the owners

November 2019

We have had a very good stay. The cottage was absolutely gorgeous. Everything was sparkling clean and very top quality, from the furniture to the kitchen tools. But for us, there were two things that made our stay even better. First one is the log burner. It was a delight and I wanted to take it home????. Second one is the king bed. It was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in and the pillows and the duvet were absolutely pure heaven. So fluffy and soft that my husband and I felt like wrapped up in cotton wool????. I even asked the owner lady where she got it from????. Out of all the cottages we have stayed in so far, this cottage has the best wifi too which made our son happy. Unfortunately, the weather was quite bad but the loveliness of the place has made up for it. I also need to mention the owners. They were very nice and so helpful, especially when we had a punctured tyre on our last day. The lady lent us her foot pump and then took us to the garage, making sure we were ok. I'd recommend this cottage to everyone.

Yes. We were blessed with excellent weather and enjoyed the lovely private garden as well as the first rate cottage and its facilities.

September 2019

We had a lovely time in this quiet cottage, with everything we needed.

September 2019

Excellent facilities and good quality kitchen equipment. Decorated very well throughout with very comfortable beds and bedding. The utility room was very useful for washing and drying wet suits and beach equipment. We had a lovely stay.

June 2019

We arrived to a wonderful cottage which had everything you may well have forgotten . A new bunch of white Chrisanths awaited us with a fresh tin of flap jacks . It was like walking in to our own home . We entered into a lovely sitting room which was bright and cheerful. With a wood burner fire if needed .A modern chandelier which gave a good light . After going up about eight or so steps into the kitchen which overlooks the sitting room ,it is again is a lovely bright big room . Everything you need in a kitchen which is so useful because I do forget a few items occasionally and it saves me a trip into Kingsbridge .kingsbridge is about 10 minutes drive away , or a thirty minute walk on a footpath across a field .A lovely sea side town ,with its own harbour as it is the head of Salcombe estuary. The bedrooms are large and bright . The room with double bed has 18 “ thick walls and very nice comfortable bed . A big window with seat to look at the pretty hills over the estuary .The room with single beds is large again a good size window letting sunshine in . The bathroom is good .Electric Shower over bath with glass side panel e.t.c everything you need . Out side is a proper cottage garden ,beautifully secluded and private . Also our own drive , and entrance under a porch ,covered in Roses Geraniums and fuchsias .we often ate outside . There was a picnic table on the grass , two chairs under wild dog roses ,and geraniums and in a sunny spot was another place with table and chairs and pots of geraniums , it was all idyllic. Bo and Gerald thank you for allowing us a lovely Holliday .
