Our TOP 10 South West Beaches

2) Great Mattiscombe Sands, South Devon:
Facilities: None
Dogs: Allowed, no restrictions
Lifeguard Cover: None

Everyone has different requirements when they go to the beach; some of us like facilities or somewhere super family friendly, whilst others of us love to feel the call of the wild, finding a totally secluded spot with just nature for company. We think we’ve found something for everyone in our Toadie Top 10 Best Beaches in the South West, and our second favourite beach is no exception.

Mattiscombe is a totally unspoilt sandy beach and there’s good reason for that; access is not very easy! However, if you are able to tackle the steep path down (and back up again), then it is well worth it. There’s plenty of parking at Start Point car park and from here you take the footpath down to the beach. There are no facilities at all so bring everything you will need for being by the seaside, such as food and drink, and please remember to bring it all back with you too!

The beach itself is usually uncrowded and the water is shallow and crystal clear, making it wonderful for swimming in the summer. There are no dog restrictions so your four-legged friend can join in the fun and there are also plenty of rocks to explore, making this secluded beach a real hit with kids. If you just fancy a quick stop off at the beach you can also join the South West Coast Path from here. For some truly stunning scenery, walk the loop from Mattiscombe beach along the cliff path towards Start Point lighthouse then back up to the hill to the car park.

Bay View is a brisk jaunt along the coastal path from Mattiscombe Beach

Holiday in Hallsands at Bayview and walk the South West Coast Path to Mattiscombe beach. Or why not stay in nearby Oak End Barn, South Allington.
