Found just across the border into South East Cornwall is the Rame Peninsula – a wild headland studded with fishing villages, golden sandy beaches and secluded coves. There is a peaceful natural beauty here with great walking, fishing and birdwatching, but still plenty to do for families with country parks, attractions, good food and accessible beaches, plus the added convenience of being just a ferry ride from Plymouth with all its facilities.
You could be a world away from the city though in the twin fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, little havens of pastel-coloured cottages, shops and galleries encircling a shingle beach and bay that overlooks the stunning Plymouth Sound. Here you can take to the water on a kayak or paddleboard which can be hired from the beach, or take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters of this idyllic little bay. On clear days, you can catch a glimpse of all sorts of wildlife from birds to seals and dolphins, and even the famous Eddystone lighthouse.
On the western side of the peninsula you’ll find Whitsand Bay, with its gorgeous sandy beaches stretching for five miles from Rame Head to Portwrinkle. These long, golden sandy beaches are often quiet even at the height of summer and are perfect for surfing and sunbathing. At Rame Head itself tea and cake at the Long Gallery, the beautifully restored old school house in St Germans, prepares you for a bracing walk on the South West Coast Path around Rame Head. In medieval times monks were said to have retreated to its chapel – a tiny stone building far out on the headland.
On other days, picnic in the dreamy riverside gardens at Port Eliot, or head to Mount Edgcumbe Park, where you can rent bikes or Segways for a fun afternoon out.
With its energising sea air, glorious scenery and peace and quiet, holidays on the Rame Peninsula are a wonderful tonic all year round.
