Life in Falmouth revolves around the sea. You’ll find freshly-caught seafood on the menu of Falmouth’s many restaurants, and hear songs about the the sea belted out at the annual Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival.

Built around the third largest deep-water harbour in the world, this bustling town is steeped in maritime history. In 1540, King Henry VIII built Pendennis Castle on the edge of the Fal estuary to defend against invasions and protect the Carrick Roads waterway. Over 200 years later, it was Falmouth where the news of Nelson’s death, and Britain’s victory at Trafalgar, was first landed and taken to London.

Today, you can embark on your own voyage of discovery at the National Maritime Museum. With 15 galleries, interactive exhibits, a boatbuilding workshop and an underwater viewing window, kids and adults alike will love learning about Falmouth’s vibrant past.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a total novice, a holiday in Falmouth isn’t complete without taking to the water. Thanks to its sheltered harbour, Falmouth is one of the UK’s premier sailing destinations so it’s a great place to learn the ropes and set sail. Pendennis Castle

One of Henry VIII’s finest coastal fortresses, Pendennis Castle has protected Cornwall against invasion since the Tudor period and operated throughout the period 1539–1956.  When you visit you can learn about how the castle has evolved, experience the sights and sounds of battle, and examine the role of the castle as part of Fortress Falmouth during the First World War.  The castle dominates a high rocky headland on the south side of the Fal Estuary, overlooking the English Channel.  It’s a great day out for families or those who are just interested in the area, with lots of events available throughout the summer months.  The castle is open from March to September and prices start at £7.90 for non English Heritage members.
