Visitors love this beautiful, Georgian market town that’s also a popular sailing resort. Lymington boasts three marinas and was the training ground for local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, you can see the golden letter box at the bottom of the high street, painted in recognition of his success with a fifth Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Lymington is one of the largest towns in the New Forest and has a key role in the life of the area. This charming town is packed full of history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and is an important port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent. Human habitation in the Lymington area dates back to the Iron Age, and a 6th Century BC hill fort known locally as Buckland Rings can still be seen today. As with many other towns and villages in the area, Lymington thrived during the Norman Conquest, thanks to its key location on the south coast.

If you want to leave your car at home and come by train, Lymington Rail line is a branch off the main Waterloo to Weymouth line. Once here, you’ll find regular buses with stops all over the New Forest and coastline.

There are lots of places to walk and amble in and around Lymington, these include characterful cobbled streets leading down to the town quay and harbour – a great place to relax and watch harbour life - fishing boats land their haul, yachts and leisure boats coming in and out.

There are lots of town events, activities and day trips from Lymington including fishing trips, boat and sailing charters, canoeing and kayaking, diving trips, mini cruises and ferry over to the Isle of Wight with your car or as a foot passenger.

Saturdays in the high street are a hive of activity, with a weekly street market selling everything from plants, clothes and household goods to home-made cakes, fruit and veg and a whole lot more. Shopping is great with a high street brands mixed with an interesting and eclectic mix of independent retailers and boutiques. There are a few supermarkets and specialist food shops for provisions to take back to your cottage, including one that makes their own home-made dishes and desserts and freezes them.

Lymington also has a number of really good eateries in and around the town, with the main concentration being around the high street. Lanes of Lymington serves superb food and also runs a cookery school. The Elderflower, whose chef/proprietor hails from the famous 5* Chewton Glen Hotel is superb.

During the warmer months you can relax in the bandstand gardens and enjoy some free musical entertainment. A few minutes’ further on are Lymington Sea Water Baths, the oldest of their kind in the UK, dating back to 1833. A short walk further on is the start of Keyhaven Nature Reserve. Well worth going to if you like birds, wildlife and natural beauty complimented with wonderful views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

The Ship Inn - Lymington
(Less than a mile)

(36)

In a superb location on the town’s quay with large decking area to the side - great for watching the world go by. The bar is well stocked, with an impressive selection of drinks. Due to being on the quay, the pub can get busy, so if you want to eat it’s worth booking ahead. The food is great, a step above the usual pub fare and comes in generous, hearty portions.

A nice late evening family meal was taken here. Ok Pub, A bit quiet but very spacious. Overpriced like most things in the New Forest and waitress could have been a bit less open with her comments to one of our party who was made to feel a bit embarrassed as the only person ordering a starter.

February 2024

Had a very nice Sunday lunch here. Pleasant staff, and nice surroundings.

October 2023

We had two meals in the pub during our holiday - the restaurant was really busy so we sat in the pub - the food was really nice and we didn’t have to wait too long.

September 2023

Poor and slow service with no proper management of order taking, and floor service.

We were disappointed with the service, waiting a long time for desserts and with two young boys this was not ideal. Food descriptions not very accurate. One order was the Massaman curry which was not as expected and the chicken, bacon and avocado salad had no avocado!

October 2022

Rather pretentious and did not really cater for non-meat eaters. Very over-priced.

August 2021

You have to book well in advance to eat here. Was on their waiting list for about a month, and luckily managed to get in through a cancellation. Food excellent. We went for the 7 courses with pairing wine. Once you are seated,, its your table for the whole evening. A lovely experience

June 2021

We enjoyed dinner here last week during our stay in Lymington. It was absolutely delicious. We chose the 7 course tasting menu and all dishes were fantastic. I especially enjoyed the crispy hen egg and the forest floor pudding which was very clever and an extremely pretty dish. We also treated ourselves to the wine pairing and each wine matched its course perfectly. A wonderful evening.

This distinguished town centre pub crowns the cobbled street leading to the town quay. Dating back over 300 years, the interior is both atmospheric and comfortable. There’s a large, roaring log fire to welcome guests on chilly days and pretty courtyard garden for when the sun shines. The bar is well stocked, featuring Cask Marque approved Fullers London Pride, Ringwood Best Bitter, Timothy Taylors Landlord, Youngs and HSB. Expect traditional pub food and light bites, plus a separate menu dedicated to vegetarians.

Excellent food and service. Steak and Ale pie and Red Snapper were fabulous. Booked ahead as gets very busy.

June 2021

Due to lock down restrictions we were unable, this time, to visit the restaurant. However, we did try the take away service on two occasions and both times the food was excellent and the presentation and service first class.

May 2021

Our favourite pub in the heart of Lymington. A warm & welcoming atmosphere, lovely staff and hearty portions of good pub grub.

October 2020

Such a pretty pub. Lots of nooks and crannies, colourful cushions and friendly staff. We had lunch here and the steak and ale pie was just what the doctor ordered on a chilly autumn day. Comfort food on a plate. Portions are extremely generous and even though we only shared a starter , sadly we couldn’t finish our main meals. Would highly recommend.

October 2020

Ate here twice during our recent visit to Lymington. Staff were welcoming and friendly, the pub was comfortable and warm and the food was absolutely delicious on both occasions. The best burger my husband has had in a long time, so he said and I could eat plate after plate of the brie starter!

October 2020

Nice cosy pub but staff's attitude was disappointing.

November 2019

This is a good local pub, we ate their twice in a week. Friendly service and really good staff. It was off season so we didn’t book, but I guess in summer booking to eat would be required.

June 2019

Food and staff really good but the seats were filthy and need changing urgently

June 2019

Lovely atmospheric pub. Dog friendly. Best Steak and Ale Pie I have ever had, served with excellent fresh vegetables and cracking chips! This was the only place during our stay in Lymington where we ate twice, going back especially on our last night.

March 2019

Quite pleasant,food good

September 2018

Great little boozer. I could happily sit in there all evening chatting and drinking! Menu looked ok although we didn't eat. It's got lots of small sections which adds to the atmosphere but isn't ideal for kids and prams. We went without the kids and loved it. Great playlist in the background too!

July 2017

Stopped for a drink, nice cosy pub, would be lovely in the winter with the fires lit. Perfect location if you are staying in Lymington.

Wonderful 1833 pool - I preferred the 20 degree temperature to the stifling 30 degree in the Leisure Centre. Very friendly staff. The most spacious pool I've swum in anywhere. Swam here most days £4.00 for two hours a bargain.

September 2023

We swam here pretty much every morning of our stay that it was open. Good value for general swimming - the more expensive inflatables course looked like great fun but we didn't try it ourselves. Such a good way to start the day, and a great facility for the town as there's no beach. Would have been even better if it opened earlier or later in the day.

September 2023

We spent an afternoon there and the children enjoyed the inflatables. The weather was good. Changing rooms not clearly signed though.

August 2023

Brilliant place loved it although water was bracing

August 2023

This is a must for everyone, especially for teenagers who love a challenge. We left our two on the assault course for 2 hours whilst we wandered the salt marshes on the Solent Way nearby. The ice cream kiosk next to the baths is value for money too and sells the local ice cream with generous portions.

August 2022

Planning to go there as looked good with all the fun equipment you could hire but found the cost for a family of six (two adults, four children) too expensive so did not go after all.

August 2021

We had a great time on the inflatables one morning. My son loved it! Friendly staff and good to hire wet suits.

August 2021

Did paddle boarding here, a great safe place to give it a try.

August 2021

Great activity, kids loved it! Harder than it looks.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.

Barton on Sea

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Castle Beach

A picturesque, tree-lined beach of shingle, and sand at low tide. Good facilities on the cliff top including an excellent tea room, public toilets, baby change and a children’s play area in the Castle gardens. Plenty of parking and sloping access down to the beach. Highcliffe Castle beach is dog-friendly all year round.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(8 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Excellent service, aw always

July 2023

Without doubt this was one of the the nicest and best houses we have ever stayed in. The house may look small from the outside but in fact it is large and the standard of furnishings and kitchen equipment are absolutely top knotch and of the highest quality. There is a large garden with a nice table and chairs and we were equally comfortable in the downstairs lounge or the upstairs lounge from where you can get brilliant views of the passing ferry, about 100 yards away. The property location is great and about a 7/8 minute walk into town. The Mayflower pub is about 100 yards away and The Ship in the town does decent meals. In summary a really lovely stay.

June 2023

Fabulous property in a great location which is both quiet and easy walking to all the restaurants and pubs. Parking disc is a great addition.

October 2022

Yes. And very much appreciated the prompt action to release the sash windows to open.

September 2022

great location and comfortable furnishings and very good equipment, overall.

June 2022

Great thanks! The building is surprisingly roomy and luxurious (looks quite small in the pics :-)) Wonderful patio/open plan kitchen at the back. View from the balcony is good. Staff at the office in Lymington were welcoming, friendly and helpful- got things off to a great start.

October 2021

Loved this property. Location is excellent. Property is deceptively spacious. Beds exceptionally comfortable and other furnishings are of a high standard. Kitchen very well equipped. Would definitely stay here again.

September 2021

Lovely property in a great location. Would stay again. Staff at NFC were helpful and friendly

August 2021

Great location and property has plenty of space and was well equipped. Only issue was with side gate that needed fixing. We reported it and was fixed quickly but the person came at just after 8am with no advance warning. Very loud next to our bedroom, woke everyone up and made a mess of our car which we would have moved

July 2021

We had a lovely stay in Alexandra, it is a spacious house in a great location. We had no issues parking our car once we got the hang of it. Upgrading the outdoor furniture to allow guests to enjoy the beautiful garden would make a big difference, as would blackout lining on all the bedroom curtains!

July 2021

The house was perfect for our needs, in fact my in laws are looking to book later in the year based on our recommendation.

May 2021

Greatly enjoyed our stay. New Forest Cottages service was excellent and the house was very comfortable and very clean.

May 2021

The best accommodation we have ever stayed in

May 2021

Really enjoyed our stay thank you. The property was very clean on arrival which was reassuring regarding Covid-19.

September 2019

The details do not mention the building works to the neighbouring property, which involves noise from before 8am, which makes having an undisturbed lie in challenging, the builders were also working on Sunday, scaffolding was erected on the patio within a hoarding, the roof was being tiled, this resulted in a complete lack of downstairs privacy. This did compromise our holiday.

July 2019

A lovely house in a perfect spot. We had a great time.

November 2018

We’ve found Alexandra to be a home from home. Warm and comfortable with everything a family requires for a relaxing stay.

September 2018

Great house and location

July 2018

Loved it! Would definitely recommend.

July 2018

Yes the location and property was good.

April 2018

We had a lovely stay, despite average weather! The property had been refurbished since we last stayed and everything was perfect! It's a great property and all the staff at New Forest Cottages were very helpful. Recommend them and this property highly.

October 2017

September 2017

September 2017

Apart from the weather, we had a nice time

August 2017

We did enjoy our stay and the welcome bottles of wine were a nice touch. We would recommend this house.

July 2017

We had a lovely holiday in Lymington. The property was of a really high standard and the location brilliant. Really enjoyed the music at the bandstand at the weekend. We couldn't fault it.

June 2017

We thought the property was excellent, well furnished and to a high standard. We struggle to find anything to criticise it for. Location opposite the recreation ground and overlooking the marine was lovely. Had a good holiday in Lymington.

April 2017

We have stayed in this property several times and are back in July for a further 2 weeks. We love the location and the set up of the property really suits our family. We did feel however this time the property wasnt as clean as usual and in general in definitely needs a little "sprucing up". In particular the outside area from the upstairs lounge balcoony is filthy. it needs cleaning and painting, it made it difficult to go out and enjoy the area. The same for the back garden, the walls are black and mouldy in parts. All that said we still love it but just wish it was kept a little better
