COULD NOT TAKE THE DOG IN THERE BUT HAD A TAKEAWAY FISH AND CHIPS THERE WHICH WAS OK

July 2023

Lovely quaint little pub with a nice atmosphere and great food. We had a lovely meal here whilst on holiday recently and then some takeaway fish and chips another night. Both were really good and great value for money. The staff are very friendly too. It’s small but very cosy

October 2021

Smashing pub with good food (despite limited choice) and beer.

October 2021

We visited the Dodbrooke Inn one evening and were very impressed. The people were very welcoming and the meals we had were lovely. I had fish and chips which were the best I had had in a long time and my husband had steak which he also said was excellent. They were also very busy doing takeaways. Should we return to the area we would certainly pay another visit.

August 2021

Due to covid lockdown, only take away was available. We had fish and chips. Good quality and a sensible price

May 2021

Haven't eaten here but looks good. Excellent beers

September 2018

June 2021

Always visit The Old Bakery during our annual trips to Kingsbridge and we were not disappointed. They had only been open for a day but service and food were both exceptional. I thoroughly recommend.

May 2021

Wow. Such delicious food and we were made very welcome. So good we went back again the evenings after!

September 2020

Lovely quirky rustic little place to eat (out-of-season limited opening hours otherwise we would have eaten here more than once)! It is called The Old Bakery because that is literally what it is. The ovens and temp gauge are still in situ and the room is probably pretty much as it always has been but lovingly looked after and decorated. Ambient music plays from Sonos speakers to add to the modest atmosphere. (Probably quite busy in high season) Tapas menu, Persian Mediterranean influence. Really nice if you like that sort of thing! We did, it was lovely. Highly recommend a visit or two. Family friendly. Reasonable prices typically £6 to £7.50 per dish. Parking in main pay and display car park just across the road near the water.

November 2019

We had a really lovely meal here. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff very friendly.

September 2019

The Old Bakery becomes a pleasant and friendly tapas style restaurant in the evening, well worth a visit.

Nice atmosphere, friendly service and very tasty food with decent size portions but for goodness sake stop serving the souvlaki on slates. I know the trendies say it’s cool but it’s just not hygienic

November 2023

Amazing fish and chips.

October 2023

We had a great takeout from The Cod Father. Very busy and a long queue, but worth the wait. Be prepared and have your own sauces etc to hand if you want them. Buying them in the chippie was on the expensive side, but clearly more convenient if eating down on the side of the estuary etc.

September 2023

When there is queue waiting for shop to open it’s usually a good sign and this takeaway did not disappoint it’s was excellent

Shame that they didn't have children's/OAP portions - waste of food, which was OK although the fish was quite greasy.

May 2018

Beautiful fish, chips to die for. The food is truly stunning. If I could give it more stars, I'd give it 10 out of 5.

January 2018

Harbour House Art Gallery
Harbour House Art Gallery

Harbour House Centre for Arts and Yoga sits in pride of place in Kingsbridge overlooking the estuary and offers yoga, meditation, Pilates and Tai Chi classes, a vegetarian café and art exhibitions in one beautiful, light filled environment. Friendly, healthy and holistic, they host local artists and a variety of artistic styles, but it’s not merely about observing, it’s about getting involved, so they also have life drawing, painting and arts classes available. The café overlooks the art gallery, adding another dimension to your lunch, but classes are popular, so while you can pop into most exhibitions, it’s a good idea to phone and check availability for classes before you turn up! Had a delicious and relaxing lunch-would certainly return.

September 2019

Great Place for Great Art with an ever changing selection of exhibitions. It seems to be the beating heart of Kingsbridge.

June 2019

A decent enough café, with reasonable coffee and a pleasant ambience, alongside a local art gallery with (when we visited) an eclectic mix of art and artifacts. And if you're into yoga, my guess is that any type of yoga you can imagine is available here. If the weather's nice, the rear courtyard garden is quite pleasant, too.

An integral part of our holiday, er always treat the ferry as a miniature cruise.

October 2023

We caught the ferry twice, firstly in the sunshine, and we enjoyed the scenery, we caught the bus back too which was very easy. The second time it was a bit chilly so the lovely lady on the boat gave us a cosy blanket for the journey. It’s good not to have to park in Salcombe too.

July 2023

Fabulous but a bit on the pricey side

August 2022

First time on this new ferry, had been on old one several times.Did not disappoint.Crew were pleasant, informative and spent time talking with everyone.

July 2022

GREAT BOAT AND FRIENDLY STAFF . NOT ENOUGH CREEK ETC CRUISES. WAS EXPENSIVE £11 FOR ONE WAY

July 2022

A must for first timers to the area in particular but we have been coming for many years and still do the trip. Pretty ride and the couple operating it were very friendly and helpful, particularly helping my husband on and off the boat. Bit pricey but we went down on the boat and back on our free bus passes so we weren’t really restricted on ferry times

June 2022

Lovely but expensive. Lacked Creek Cruises, during our stay. Only 2 were on offer.

June 2022

Lovely trip down to Salcombe. Louise was a very good host and had lots of useful information

Excellent service to Salcombe. It was a lovely way to travel to Salcombe- without the traffuc! We got the bus back as the tide wasn’t in again until much later, but that was very easy too.

Sunny Cove
Sunny Cove
(4 miles)

(7)

Accessed either by boat, via a 10-minute walk through the woods from parking at Mill Bay, or a stroll from the Salcombe to East Portlemouth Ferry, Sunny Cove is a sandy beach which, as you might expect, catches the sun throughout the day, weather pending. It’s on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary opposite North Sands beach and Fort Charles, the ruined fortification that was originally constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the Kingsbridge Estuary against French and Spanish Pirates. It’s a relatively gentle spot for swimming and ideal for picnics, lazy summer afternoons, and reaching on kayaks and paddle boards from other nearby beaches as well as being the perfect spot for building sandcastles. That said, the tide can come in quite quickly so make sure you don’t get caught out and be careful of the swell when bringing boats into the beach. Head there for the day in the summer or as a stop off en route to the café at Gara Rock or a longer walk along the coast path towards Prawle Point. Dogs are welcome all year round but keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities in the immediate vicinity (it would be a 10-15-minute walk along wooded footpaths) so take your sandwiches with you!

October 2021

Lovely little beach worth the walk or paddle!

July 2021

We didn’t know about this. Whilst appreciating the need to keep things to a minimum, local information like this could have been uploaded digitally. We made 2 attempts to locate a beach without success.

October 2020

The beach and the views were superb

September 2019

A nice sandy beach, crowded on a sunny day. but access quite tricky - a long walk for children if no room in the NT car park, and then a long walk back afterwards.

August 2019

Best reached by direct boat access but easy enough walk from ferry or mill bay car park. Our favourite beach.

August 2018

Mill Bay
(4 miles)

(29)

A sandy beach on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary, at low tide Mill Bay stretches all the way up the coastline to East Portlemouth beach. It has the most wonderful view of Salcombe itself and is popular with everyone, especially families, because of the large swathes of sand on which you can set up camp for the day and enjoy safe, clean swimming conditions. Parking is limited, so the best way to get to it is either by boat or by catching the East Portlemouth Ferry from Salcombe and strolling along. That way you can also nip past The Venus Café by the slipway to pick ice creams, sandwiches and refreshments before settling in for the day. There are rock pools to explore, sandcastles to build and swimming to be done, just make sure you’re careful of any boats coming in and out of the beach. Dogs are welcome at Mill Bay all year round, and it makes an excellent spot to run around with them whatever time of the year. Like the other beaches along this stretch of coast, Mill Bay makes for an ideal place to spend the day right into the evening, although it is a little stroll to the nearest facilities. It’s also a lovely beach to meander across en route towards Gara Rock or on a longer walk along the coast path.

Gorgeous little Bay close to where we were staying our dog. Loved fetching his ball in and out the water. Very pretty spot.

April 2022

Lovely beach and you can walk to Gara rock from here and along beach to the ferry crossing to salcombe

March 2022

Great beach. Bumpy access road as sand has blown across it. Slightly marred by 1-2 selfish dog owners who have left their calling cards

November 2021

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on this beautiful beach. Fabulous place ??

September 2021

Fantastic beach one of the best in the area. Have to get to car park (National Trust) very early if you don't want to carry all your stuff to the beach.

September 2021

We attempted to drive to Mill Bay car park- not a good idea in August! No parking spaces, no turning points. We tried another day, parking at Gara Rock and asking down the bridle path. We have a disabled granddaughter, the walk down was manageable but the return walk was much more difficult. Beautiful beach and worth the walk.

September 2021

Lovely, clean, sandy beach in wonderful location with beautiful views and easy access from Salcombe via the East Portlemouth ferry.

August 2021

Lovely beach, clear water

July 2021

Lovely beach for children to play on.

June 2021

Favourite beach going back to my childhood. The road to it was closed due to a land slip in January. Talked to the workmen who said it was due to reopen November 2020.

October 2020

Lovely beach but this year overrun with people arriving by motor boat- so it felt a little worrying for kids to swim out among them,(and frankly it spoilt the view) and engine noise/fumes at the end of the day as everyone left!

September 2020

Wonderful

September 2019

I endorse all of the other favourable comments and emphasise the urgent need to make the lavatories hygienic. In fact all of the public conveniences are anything but convenient.

September 2019

Lovely beach, handy to have little food caravan selling crepes, drinks and ice cream, good quality too. The toilets were disgusting though and should have been cleaned more regularly, also waste bins overflowing.

August 2019

Great place for a day on the beach. Safe and dog friendly

August 2019

North Sands
North Sands, Salcombe
(5 miles)

(17)

The first beach as you walk along the Cliff Road out of Salcombe, North Sands sits in a valley and is a sandy horseshoe shaped beach that’s expansive at low tide. Thanks to its shape and location, it’s extremely popular in the summer because there’s plenty of space to set up camp for the day with buckets, spades and fishing nets in tow for avid marine biologists and sand castle connoisseurs. The beach has a fresh water stream running through it from the top of the valley, which, aside from providing hours of entertainment for accompanying dogs and a marvellous place to wash the sand off your feet, also means that the beach is largely wet sand, so don’t forget to take something to sit on if you’re heading there for the day. Popular with swimmers, despite the chilly water, North Sands provides a wonderful view out of the mouth of the Salcombe estuary and into the deep blue yonder so, for keen photographers, it’s ideal. If the weather is right then it’s a favourite amongst body boarders or even surfers on choppier days, and it’s a great place to take the paddle boards and kayaks if you happen to have them. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, unlike many of the beaches in the area, there are toilets over the road and there’s a car park with charges from £1 throughout the year. The cherry on top of this beautiful location is The Winking Prawn café and restaurant that’s right next to the beach. Open all year round they serve everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner to coffee, tea and cake, and in the summer they provide a barbecue in the garden overlooking the sea. It is popular though so leave a little time to queue for that Salcombe Dairy honeycomb ice cream in the height of summer!

A great dog friendly beach. Check the tide times, go at low tide, makes a fabulous beach to look for shells, relax in the sun, and walk in the stuff with your dog.

Excellent beach for dogs

May 2023

May 2023

What a beautiful place to walk to along Coast Road from Salcombe town. The view through the trees to the amazing colour of the water is breathtaking and North Sands is spectacular. We could have sat just people watching all day. The winking prawn is a lovely place for a drink or bite to eat.

Slapton Sands
Slapton Sands
(5 miles)

A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!

Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view

August 2023

A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.

July 2023

Visited here out of respect for those who practiced the D-Day landings on this beach. If venturing doen to the sea from the car park please note it was hard getting back up as you sink into the stones, so not so good for those with any mobility issues.

July 2023

Beautiful pebbly beach, water was so clear!

June 2023

Lovely beach with clear blue sea, very small shingle so no good if u have children who want to build a sand castle, also water gets deep very quickly

June 2023

Beautiful quiet unspoilt beach

April 2023

Really interesting history. Great for the children to link back to a Michael Morpurgo story too.

April 2022

loved it

November 2021

Long pebbly beach. Parking right on the front.

September 2021

We visited on a very overcast day with a keen wind blowing, so we did not see the sands at their best. We walked into Slapton and had tea in the church and found a pleasant footpath back to the beach car park, which ran past the nature reserve at Slapton Ley.

September 2021

A beautiful, gentle walk along the side of the nature reserve, if you make it to the turn off to go into Slapton, there is a lovely pub up there, the Queens Arms great gardens, food and friendly staff.

September 2021

Absolutely stunning stretch of beach (non-sandy which we prefer) with miles of space. Beautiful for early morning dog walks with a coffee at the end from the 'cafe on the beach' at Strete Gate picnic area.

May 2021

Walked along the beach and round the Nature reserve whilst staying in Slapton village. Lovely long shingle beach - our dog loved it. Lovely circular walk through the medieval village and back through the Nature reserve and along the beach.

November 2020

Ample parking, nice walk along the beach.

October 2020

Beautiful beach with a stunning sunrise. The sound of the sea on the pebbles is very relaxing. Really clean . No rubbish . Beautiful walks nearby. Nice cafe and restaurants. Dog friendly too.

September 2020

We have had lovely walks along Clapton and the views are stunning

February 2020

If you love the sound of the waves on pebbles this has to be one of the best beaches in the world !

April 2019

A totally unspoilt stretch of beach with wild flowers and wonderfully coloured rocks. We were lucky to be staying on a stones throw away and spent a few happy hours there with our dog watching the locals beach fishing in the evenings - bliss!

August 2018

Lovely walking -

June 2018

Lovely walk for wild flowers, bird watching sea views

May 2018

Clean beach.No plastic.

May 2018

This is certainly a lovely beach and so little rubbish.

April 2018

Really interesting area and good walks along the coast and by the Ley. Generous provision of toilets and parking and a number of places to eat. Would particularly recommend The Start Bay Inn, The Boathouse and Seabreeze Cafe at Torcross. Also very handy that there is a bus should you want to walk one way and get a bus back. Very beautiful and peaceful.

October 2017

Beautiful beach right across from our Cottage

September 2017

Wonderful nature reserve with well signposted walks.

September 2017

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach - dogs allowed all year. Not many facilities - we went to the Strete end of the beach as there is a great little coffee hut there - great coffee and friendly staff.

September 2017

Clapton Sands is beautiful. The rocks are the most beautiful colours, wild flowers abound on the beach, the views in either direction are stunning and it is rarely over crowded. One of the most wonderful areas in the U.K.

May 2017

Great place for a walk along the beach and had some great events for children at Easter. Great fish and chips in the pub at the end on Torcross

Gara Rock Beach
Gara Rock Beach
(5 miles)

(12)

A short ferry ride over the estuary from Salcombe to East Portlemouth, followed by a scenic walk along the coast (around 40 minutes depending on how speedy you are), will lead you to a dramatic headland and beach café known as Gara Rock. With panoramic views of the sea, the café is open for teas, cakes, lunch, and afternoon tea before you descend to Gara Rock Beach below. The beach is a sandy cove flanked by rocks, and can also be reached by parking at the Mill Bay car park which is around two miles away on foot. The beauty of this beach is that it is only accessible either on foot or by boat, so it does have a wonderful sense of escapism alongside its rugged splendour. Although it is a little bit of a climb back up to the café, the proximity of food and toilets means that you can set up camp here for most of the day, dipping into the water as and when you choose if the weather is warm enough. Alternatively, it’s the perfect place for a pit stop if you’re spending the day walking along the coast path towards Prawle Point and Dartmouth beyond. Dogs are allowed on the beach but not in high season, so keep that in mind, and while it’s a slightly tricky beach to get to it’s worth the effort… maybe just see if you can get a takeaway brownie and a cup of tea from the café to keep you going!

A bit tricky getting down to the beach but worth it.

Super dog friendly beach and the children had a lovely time too, it was pretty busy but it was a bank holiday!

June 2022

VERY PEACEFULL AND NO CROWDS

September 2021

Superb location, excellent service. We were unable to book beforehand but were fortunate to be able to secure a table.

September 2021

Beautiful sandy and pebbly cove... we spent 2 gorgeous days there with our dog! Be prepared for steep climb back to Gara Rock restaurant but worth it!

July 2021

After driving an hour through Devon drizzle we were not impressed to be turned away because we weren't guests. "or you can sit outside and have coffee from the Garavan". Lesson learned: Don't go unless you're booked.

October 2020

We had a beautiful meal with stunning views at Gara Rock. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was divine. We also had spa treatments for the group, who left feeling relaxed and radiant.

September 2020

Lovely secluded beach, dog friendly and easy to get to.

July 2020

Go there for the coastal walk. Fantastic. Stop at the hotel for a coffee, the views are stunning

September 2019

A lovely beach (although quite "weedy"), almost deserted the morning we were there, and well worth the tricky path down and the steep climb back

August 2019

My favourite beach in the country, nothing run of the mill here, lovely views

July 2019

Lovely beach. We arrived early after a steep walk down the cliff path. Had the beach initially to ourselves! Starts to get busier as the day goes on.

March 2023

Our 3rd visit in three years. Bearscombe is becoming our Devon home from home! Walks on the SW Coat path. a trip to Lydford Gorge. the Codfather in Kingsbridge is recommended and the Lobster Pods in Hope Cove.

October 2022

Excellent location & everyone we met in & around the property was super friendly as we’re all the dogs & cats! The property is enormous & has the opportunity to be amazing with some updating & renewing of furniture. The views were amazing & once we’d made a few tweaks our stay was lovely.

August 2022

Had a lovely sociable time here with friends and family. The house is wonderful and we were made to feel very welcome by both 2 legged and 4 legged denizens of the farm. We loved it.

July 2022

Our 3rd time in 3 years! Family of 6, love the views, amount of space in the house and easy walk into Kingsbridge. We enjoyed some trips to Thurlestone for golf and beach. Bigbury on Sea is another fave of ours. We look forward to another visit here in the future!

June 2022

Thanks for a brilliant stay - we loved it!

May 2022

Location was stunning and the house very spacious. Owners polite. Just the dogs is an issue and can be quite anxiety provoking for anyone who does not like dogs.

August 2021

Lovely position, Jill and family all delightful. Master bedroom floor had not been hoovered properly which was unpleasant.

Thank you for your feedback, we are so sorry the bedroom floor had not been hoovered properly, we would have been able to rectify this for you, and have passed this on to the housekeeper and owner to monitor going forward. We are very pleased you enjoyed the location of Bearscombe, it is very pretty. We hope to welcome you back to this, or another Toad Hall property soon.

June 2021

The early wake up call at 5am from the 15 dogs next door was upsetting and made for early morning rising. The bed mattresses in the single and front double were very poor quality, very bouncy when turning over or moving in sleep and this affected the quality of sleep. The property was large and spacious in a lovely setting and the surrounding area was all easily accessible. We would not stay here again for the above reasons.

Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry the next door dogs disturbed you, this is not a problem we had heard of before and the owner has spoken to his neighbour and since your feedback this has not been reported as an issue. Mattresses are subjective and these are all fairly new, we are sorry they were not too your liking and will continue to monitor and assess the mattresses to ensure they have not deteriorated. We are glad you enjoyed the location, and hope to welcome you back to another Toad Hall property soon.

August 2020

the people next door to the property were very friendly and helpful they had 2 lovely dogs which were again very friendly, my daughter and her in laws live close by and we had them all over for dinner and were able to seat 12 people around the table comfortably lovely weather helped with a really good holiday

July 2020

Yes

November 2019

We enjoyed our stay and everything was as expected from photos on website. Bearscombe House is a very spacious and comfortable place to stay. This holiday was enjoyed by 3 generations of family and it all worked out very well. We particularly liked the log burner as our holiday was in late October just right after a day out.

June 2019

We really enjoyed our week as a family. Couldn't have asked for more really. Great weather too. Unfortunately halfway through the holiday my mother in law blocked the toilet but the owner immediately produced a plunger and no one was caught short. Happy days!

October 2018

Yes very much and would definately recommend/go back

September 2018

Yes we enjoyed our stay at the property and in the area but the configuration of the living arrangements ie only the kitchen downstairs, made it hard work, because the kitchen was not a comfortable area to relax in ie kitchen, dining area, window seats, wood burner, where would anyone sit.... To make a cup of tea in the kitchen was easy but to take it upstairs to the lounge was hard work. Small fenced garden, although handy, gave the impression that the rest of the farm was a 'no go' area.

September 2018

We stayed at Bearscombe to celebrate my parent’s diamond anniversary. We chose it because it is dog friendly but the place was just perfect to entertain extended family and the outdoor furniture was ideal for enjoying our family Sunday lunch outside and in the very comfortable kitchen. A good selection of kitchen equipment and a generous amount of crockery etc for entertaining. Also very handy for kingsbridge rugby club where we went to watch my brother training youngsters and watch my nephew play in his match. My daughter and son in law enjoyed a lunch date at The Crabshell in the sun overlooking kingsbridge estuary, while he toddler slept in peace at home at the farmhouse. We loved our stay and would highly recommend the place!

September 2018

We really enjoyed our stay. Henry was a highlight!

September 2018

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Don't over price it... Only one bathroom! But you cant have everything.

August 2018

We had a wonderful stay and Gill and family, friends and animals all made us incredibly welcome. The cottage was stunning and the rooms were all incredibly well cleaned and everything seemed new (and probably was). We felt very comfortable and even the dog had a friend in Henry, the farmers' labrador. One of our sons really loved being on the farm which was a real bonus for him. Having a great Sky TV package and reliable wifi was brilliant and I truly miss that beautiful farmhouse kitchen!
