Churchunder is a light and airy property located above a quiet lane in the pretty estuary village of Noss Mayo with delightful views over the water to the neighbouring village of Newton Ferrers. Chic and presented in a pleasing contemporary style the large living room is a great place for the family to congregate with a wood burning stove so that guests can snuggle in on those chilly spring and autumn evenings. There are three generous bedrooms with the master having en suite facilities, a modern kitchen, parking and a sunny front decking area, an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the views.

Noss Mayo is twinned with Newton Ferrers on the other side of the water and can be accessed at low water via a causeway. The villages have a selection of excellent pubs, serving good food and for those who love messing about on the water there are a number of companies specialising in all forms of water sports. For the more land based the dramatic South West Coastal path is easily accessible, historic Plymouth is a short drive away and Churchunder is an ideal base from which to explore all that the beautiful county of Devon has to offer, from dramatic Dartmoor to the many sandy beaches.

Steps and a sloping pathway lead up the terraced front garden from the roadside.
Hallway leading into an open plan living room with hardwood flooring.
Lounge area with two large sofas, 42 inch flat screen TV with DVD and contemporary woodburner.
Dining area with table and chairs to seat 6. Modern well equipped kitchen with gas hob, oven and integrated microwave, dishwasher, integrated fridge/freezer and washing machine. Front double bedroom with 5ft bed. Family shower room with shower cubicle, hand basin, WC and heated towel rail. Rear twin bedroom with two 2ft 6in single beds.
Stairs to landing with fitted wardrobe and utility cupboard with tumble dryer.
Large master bedroom with 5ft bed, sofa, TV and en suite bathroom with bath and handheld shower, hand basin, WC and heated towel rail.

Front decking furnished with garden table and chairs. Rear courtyard accessed from the kitchen with steps leading up to roof level rear garden, mainly lawn with views of the estuary.

Noss Mayo is a pretty riverside village nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the south coast of Devon, between Salcombe and Plymouth. The village faces neighbouring Newton Ferrers across a beautiful tidal creek in the River Yealm estuary, and is bordered by picturesque woodlands.

Noss Mayo enjoys stunning views over the estuary, and offers a peaceful spot from which to watch varied bird and water life as well as activities on the river. The sheltered harbour, with its colourful sailing dinghies, is well protected from storms in the Channel and makes ideal sailing waters for novices and experienced sailors alike.

Wander past charming waterside cottages, to the Swan Inn for a refreshing beer or to The Ship Inn for fine food. At low tide, cross the causeway to Newton Ferrers for a few shops, a café, and the Dolphin Inn with its ample beer garden looking over the creek. High tide offers the excuse to take the ferry (or paddle or sail!) to secure your fresh croissants from the local Post Office and store.

Walkers will enjoy the half hour stroll or more from Noss Mayo through idyllic woodland to Cellars Beach, located on the South West Coast Path, and from there, up to Gara Point. There are several unspoilt beaches within a short drive, which include family-friendly Wembury, dog-friendly Wonwell, and beautiful beach Mothecombe which is a hidden gem and offers excellent bathing at low tide.

Plymouth is conveniently situated, just 10 miles away, and is well worth visiting for a day trip or two. Highlights include the Hoe, with its iconic lighthouse and spectacular views across the world-famous natural harbour, the National Marine Aquarium, and the vibrant Barbican area with its theatre and a fantastic selection of waterside restaurants, pubs, and bars.

A holiday cottage in Noss Mayo offers a very peaceful base from which to explore stunning coastline, pretty villages and the historic city of Plymouth.

Parking for one medium sized car in the garage, plus additional space for one car in front of garage. On road parking is possible where available nearby along the lane.

  • Included: Bed linen, towels, travel cot, high chair, electricity, heating and complimentary basket of logs in winter.
  • Telephone: For incoming and local outgoing calls only. WiFi available.

  • Local Facilities: Stoke beach 2 miles; sandy beach at Mothecombe 4 miles. Shops, pubs and restaurants in both Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers, (accessible via footpath across the creek at low tide). Plymouth 10 miles.

Fantastic food, friendly staff, thoroughly recommend

April 2024

A pleasant hour or so whilst the grandparents did a spot of babysitting. We were made very welcome and watched the Halloween Quiz taking place with a range of age groups. Good place to go. Nice to see that coffee is available during daytime hours.

November 2023

Lovely Pub with amazing views and atmosphere . Great selection of drinks. Highly recommended

September 2023

This was our first visit to the Swan, greeted and served by attentive and personable staff. The food was very good and provided better value than The Ship. We will certainly be returning on future stays in Noss Mayo.

May 2023

Fabulous pub, only 5 minutes from our holiday house. Perfect for a drink and food. Lovely views and friendly staff

September 2022

Lovely pub - good wholesome food - recommend the burgers particularly the vegetarian one! It’s closed on Mondays though and advisable to book!!

August 2022

Lovely outdoor seating area with an amazing view. Great atmosphere in the build up to the regatta (sadly had to leave before final regatta weekend). Amazing monkfish scampi.

August 2022

We had understood The Swan to be the more modest of the two pubs in Noss Mayo and certainly the outdoor seating area can't compete with The Ship. But when it comes to food...this place knocked spots off the competition. Perfectly cooked fish, crunchy chips, colourful and imaginative salad and delicious home made tartare sauce. Now that's how to do it! Delightful friendly staff too.

May 2022

Lovely pub, food was delicious and they have a fab outside space

November 2021

Had one meal as they were closing for maintenance. Amy is a lovely host and the meal was good.

October 2021

Lovely location in Noss Mayo and friendly staff. The menu was not as expansive as we would have liked but food was satisfactory. The pub's resident dog was lovely and kept us entertained.

October 2021

Have not been in The Swan for many years as it had a number of problems. However, our visit on this occasion was excellent. Food, atmosphere and service were very good and we enjoyed a lovely evening.

October 2021

Great little pub, good food and drinks, very friendly staff and frequented by the locals which is always a good indication.

September 2021

We booked lunch here (essential to book as was very busy in mid Sept) and the staff were friendly and helpful. Dogs were welcome and the menu was great too. A must visit! The views are amazing!

September 2021

Ate there three times during our stay and had a very pleasant experience in a beautiful setting, though they were prone to run out of choices (twice) on a limited menu. The food was good and realistically priced. Will definitely return.

September 2021

Lovely views & great food.

September 2021

Great location. They are still running the pub under Covid restrictions (i.e. not allowing anyone into the bar and taking drinks orders through the window) which made service very slow.

August 2021

A great pub to sit and watch the world go by. Lovely staff and good beer.

July 2021

Friendly local pub that is just as welcoming to visitors. They even bring throws to keep you warm outside.

June 2021

Lovely ocation. Really friendly helpful staff. Amazing terrace in the evening when the sun goes down. Food was pretty good, but the seafood platter was all from frozen! Fish and chips was amazing.

June 2021

This is the place to go if you want to feel part of the community, plus there is the added benefit of its prime location looking down the river. Food is extremely good, and nothing is too much trouble. The chef even came out to discuss my wife's gluten-free requirements to ensure she got what she wanted. It's a first class village pub where you're welcome whether you just want a pint, or a meal!

June 2021

Very pleasant outside area, which was undercover and much needed because of the rain!

May 2021

A great waterside pub, very friendly staff and amazing food. Although due to COVID restrictions we were eating outside, it was still made warm and cosy with great heaters and throws. Really fab.

May 2021

The Swan was brilliant , great food and Amy was a great hostess. We would definitely go back and eat there.

May 2021

Whilst staying in Newton Ferrers we ate out at all three local pubs - all were really good but the Swan definitely won the prize for its imaginative menu and delicious food!

October 2020

Lovely outlook, food and service good.

August 2020

Nice space outdoors, 100% need to book a table. They do different food on different nights so walk down, they have it on the board out the front what they serve each night so check and then book for the week what you want

August 2020

Great pub! Lovely views and friendly owners. Would fully recommend!

July 2020

Absolutely stunning pub in a perfect location. Very friendly staff and fantastic food! Highly recommended!

January 2020

September 2019

Great location with good, reasonably priced, food and drink. Well worth a visit.

September 2019

We only stopped here for a coffee, but the landlady and staff were very welcoming and friendly. There were interesting photos and art on the walls and a lovely outside seating area with great views.

September 2019

A fabulous, really friendly local pub. Everyone was welcoming and to be able to sit out and watch ‘the world go by’ on the water was a delight. We’ll call in again next time we pass through.

August 2019

Lovely pub, great food, best place to sit and watch the sun go down. New managers/owners are doing a fab job.

August 2019

The Swan has been refurbished to a high standard, food is more basic than The Ship but nonetheless still great, service is a bit slow during busy periods as it’s become popular. Lovely seating outside the pub and down on Pope’s Quay where the kids can go crabbing as you sip on your drink! Dogs welcome inside which is handy.

August 2019

Really liked this pub very local feel good beer and good food . Nice family run pub with good service and a excellent view from the outside decking.

June 2019

excellent pub our favourite place to eat a drink when we are in the area, the staff are always very friendly and welcoming. Food well presented.

June 2019

Lovely local pub offering a wide choice of excellent food and beers.

Wish James and Amy every success with their new venture, deserve to do well. Thoroughly recommend and shall return on our next visit to Noss Mayo. Gill and John.

April 2019

Popped in here for a lunchtime drink on Christmas Eve. Busy but very welcoming. We didn't eat but the menu looked good and if it hadn't been so busy due to Christmas we would have eaten there.

December 2018

Great local pub, good food and drink, nice outside seating by the creek

October 2018

The Swan Inn is under new management and is a wonderful place to go for a drink and/or food. During our stay we did both. We had a three course meal and all courses were excellent. The staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. My steak came as ordered. The cask ales were well kept. The pub was clean, modern and buzzing with the chatter of our fellow diners / drinkers. First time we have been into this pub and it will not be our last. Would advise to book in advance for Friday or Saturday nights, as it is a popular establishment.

September 2018

Excellent pub food

September 2018

We had some really great meals here over the last week. The food was superb with a great choice. Landlord and land last were lovely and really helpful.

July 2018

We had very poor service on the evening we went to the Ship. they were busy, but we didn't get the food we ordered and waited 30 minutes for our dessert order to be taken only to leave without - as did other people near to us. We did speak to the Manager about this. We also went for lunch which was good.

July 2018

Lovely pub, great views, good outside space. Food was good.

October 2019

Updated last year this pub is now a really wonderful place to visit - great menu, good atmosphere and the best place to sit and watch the sun go down! Well done to the team who own/run it they work very hard and it shows!

August 2019

On a walk to find the local Co-op, and other shops, we stumbled across this pub by accident, as we knew of the Ship Inn, which we could see from our accommodation, and the Swan, which was on our side of the estuary, two minutes from our accommodation, but The Dolphin was our favourite. It had a a competitively priced varied menu, with a pleasant seating area which led down to the waters edge. The second “Voss”, (purpose built crossing) was located just here, so at low tide you could walk across the estuary, which actually would bring you out to the outside seating area of the Swan!. All in all a lovely venue in a beautiful location.

August 2019

we stayed @ glen cottage for a week, and found the Dolphin very friendly , will definitely visit again when we are in the area.

June 2019

Great location, excellent in every way.

May 2022

Fabulous and relaxed restaurant, great service, delicious food, reasonably priced and dog friendly would highly recommend.

May 2022

Lovely garden by the water, slick service from a personable young team, but given this is regarded as more of a gastro-pub, we found the food to be underwhelming. The fish and chips was greasy, the chips underdone and soggy and you really can't charge £16 and serve tartare sauce out of a jar.

May 2022

Stayed in a lovely little cottage last week by the Ship. Cannot fault the food or service. 5 star all the way, Tracy and Keith

April 2022

September 2021

Highlight of our holiday. The Ship does some great food.

September 2021

A great waterside pub with excellent service. However the owners felt a need to take their staff on holiday the week we were there, which is peak holiday time, so it was closed the day after we arrived! A lovely gesture for sure and a sign that this pub has overcome the lockdown dramas in such a short period. Used another village pub instead, which was fantastic.

September 2021

Our favourite place to eat in Noss Mayo. Both the food and the service were brilliant. Highly recommend.

August 2021

We had a delicious meal here, eating early evening as we had our granddaughter with us. Our table was ready on time and we felt comfortable and welcome. The decor is lovely as is the view. Wish we had more time to revisit. Parking on the beach was fun but it’s easy to check the tides.

June 2021

Generally good - we went four times, but marred when one of the staff had a bit of a strop when we asked to pay on more than one credit card. You're in the service industry, people!!

June 2021

Although not taking bookings when we visited in late April, the staff managed to find us a table at lunchtime. The staff, service, food and beer were all excellent.

September 2019

We booked a large group with children for an early evening dinner. We were welcomed and made extremely comfortable in the new 'glass house'. This was a beautiful private room opening onto the terrace where the children could watch the boats and we could all enjoy the view. The service was impeccable and the food first class. The whole experience made for a very special evening. Thank you.

December 2018

Had a lovely Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve 2018 and they even managed to fit us in early evening without an advance reservation so that was very impressive. My husband had venison which he pronounced a bit chewy. On another occasion we both had fish & chips which were a bit greasy unfortunately. Great atmosphere and location.

December 2018

Excellent food and good service. Great local beer.

October 2018

They just get it right, great service, great food perfectly cooked & presented with no pretentious twaddle. Oh & it's consistent, every time we come back the standards are maintained.

We've been going to The Ship Inn for many years now - always great food and friendly, helpful staff. We went five times on this trip!

August 2018

Would recommend this place, superb food and a fantastic venue. You can walk across the river at low tide, much cheaper then the ferry at £3:50 for 100 metres per person, each way!

August 2018

We’ve eaten at the Ship many times over the years, and the food has always been excellent, and the location is just gorgeous (but careful where you park when the tide’s coming in!)

August 2018

Consistently excellent food and friendly staff

September 2017

We ate here three times in the week we stayed in Noss Mayo. The food was delicious and the portions very generous on each visit. The views from the upstairs dining area are to die for. However, most importantly, we found all the staff charming and efficient despite often being very busy. We look forward to a return visit soon.

September 2017

Very friendly, good food, good service

Excellent food and service.

August 2017

We went to the Ship, 3 times during our 1 week stay in Noss Mayo. What a fabulous place to eat. A great menu, something for everyone and a wonderful atmosphere. They've got the balance right between a good welcoming pub and a great restaurant. Superb

Saltram National Trust
Saltram National Trust
(6 miles)

(3)

Surrounded by tranquil gardens and historic parkland, Saltram is a Georgian country house overlooking the River Plym, with views across rolling landscapes and an abundance of green space. The house was home to the Parker family from 1743, and was designed to show their increasingly prominent status – which is partially why it’s filled with paintings by the likes of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Happily, for us however, that has made for a wonderful environment in which to explore history, wander around the rhododendrons and camellias in the garden, and discover seasonal exhibitions, events and activities for the whole family. Prices start at £10.70 for adults and £5.30 for children in peak season, however opening hours and prices vary throughout the year. There is also a £3 charge for the car park.

Lovely peaceful walks with dog taking in the beach estuary. Dogs not allowed in the house or formal garden only the parkland.

September 2023

Lovely house, not easy to get to as Plymouth roads are not well marked and lane selection is vital.

Very friendly staff and lovely gardens - a shame we couldn't see the house because of Covid restrictions - but next time!

National Marine Aquarium
National Marine Aquarium
(6 miles)

(4)

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the Nation’s largest aquarium as well as being a charity organisation, and as such has an extremely exciting and prevalent role to play in driving marine conservation. Alongside the tourist attraction they run learning programmes for more than 30,000 children each year, have a consultancy branch and host events from weddings to birthdays and corporate functions as well. While you’re on holiday in South Devon, however, you will be more interested to know that this underwater world of discovery has the largest native exhibition in the UK exploring all the fish you have heard of and rarer varieties as well. In addition to British beauties there’s an Atlantic Ocean tank with large Nurse Sharks, sand tiger sharks and lemon sharks as well as ray and clownfish. The Aquarium has a café on site, is open daily, and has a variety of ticket types available for families, students and senior citizens.

Visited last week, definitely not worth the money, very expensive for a not particularly great attraction.

September 2021

A lovely aquarium but we had to change our original visit day as booking (due to Covid) closes at 2pm daily and no entry allowed after that time without booking.

July 2021

Brilliant, not cheap but worth it only four stars as outside play area a bit scruffy.

September 2019

Very expensive to enter and we walked around the entire place in less than an hour.

May 2021

Mothecombe Beach
(4 miles)

(3)

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.

Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

September 2023

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

May 2021

Lovely beach but cafe was being renovated and we were gasping for a cuppa

April 2017

Wonwell Beach
Wonwell Beach
(5 miles)

(5)

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wonwell is a sandy beach on the east shore of the Erme river which joins Mothecombe at low tide. It affords visitors a large expanse to explore and is accessed via a woodland path from the road which takes about 10 minutes. Alternatively, there is a slipway from the road to the shore of the river and at low tide you can walk along the edge to the beach itself, so make sure you get your timings right to make the most of this one. Parking is limited at Wonwell Beach so keep that in mind when you’re heading over. Road parking allows for around 20 cars depending on their size and there aren’t really any facilities around, although there are toilets nearby. This does mean you need to be prepared if you’re heading there for the best part of the day, but also makes for a very peaceful experience whether it’s lounging about on the sand with a picnic in the summer, or a stroll in the cooler months, simply taking in the atmosphere. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round so it’s the perfect place to take them for a run around. Something to be careful of – do keep an eye on the tide to avoid getting cut off when it comes in and getting very wet en route back to dry land!

Lovely beach. so quiet at certain times. always different. great for dogs. parking very limited.

May 2022

Amazing spot, so peaceful. Parking the only issue.

June 2021

Nice beach and great walks that lead to it, very few people around in August! Limited parking so you are better off walking there.

August 2019

Glorious beach at the mouth of the Erme. Narrow lanes and very limited parking. No toilets, cafes etc - wonderful! Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.

Ayrmer Cove
Ayrmer Cove
(6 miles)

(20)

Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!

September 2019

A beautiful little cove and fun for dogs and children.

August 2019

You can walk to this secluded cove from the cottage. Probably about 20 mins away, depending on your pace. Plenty of blackberries to eat/collect on route when in season! No facilities at the cove but beautifully unspoilt.

August 2019

Really beautiful secluded beach - great for the dog too!

July 2019

A lovely beach at the end of a beautiful valley. Absolutely perfect for dogs and never busy.

June 2019

Parked in the NT car park at Ringmore and took the 15 min walk down to the beach. Saw a beautiful sunset and had the place to ourselves. Bliss

November 2018

What a fantastic place. So quiet - we had the whole beach to ourselves a lot of the time. Our dogs loved it.

September 2018

A lovely quiet cove, with excellent rock pools at low tide. No sand but the kids enjoy it as an alternative to the massive sandy beaches at Bigbury and Bantham.

September 2018

stunning little beach, very quiet and great for snorkelling

Beautiful cove. Very quiet with lots of bird life.

June 2018

Well worth the walk with beautiful views of Burgh island from the coast path. We were the only ones there on a very sunny day in April. Perfect.

June 2017

Bantham Beach
Bantham Beach
(7 miles)

(15)

At the mouth of the Avon River, Bantham beach is easy to reach from Salcombe, Kingsbridge and our other favourite holiday home locations, as well as being a beautiful area to stay in its own right. The beach looks out over Bigbury Bay and offers a wonderful view of Burgh Island, which is famous for its art deco hotel of the same name that has hosted Agatha Christie and Noel Coward amongst its illustrious guests an can reach by sea tractor. Bantham beach has a popular reputation amongst both novice and advanced surfers, and as such there are lessons available from the Bantham Surfing Academy, which operates from the beach. They also offer other water sports including paddle boarding, and a day pottering up the Avon River on one of those when the tide is right, is a day well spent. When the tide is out at Bantham the sandy beach reveals rock pools and great swathes of space so you can happily set up a picnic and stay there for the whole day. If the mood strikes, why not walk along the coast path towards Thurlestone around the corner, and South Milton Sands beyond that, particularly as it’s also a popular beach for dog owners? Just keep in mind that from 1st May until 30th September restrictions apply, so look out for signposts with more information. If you’re spending the whole day on the beach it’s worth popping to the Gastrobus which is open seasonally in the car park, offering everything from freshly made baps to coffees, teas and cakes, or for a larger meal head the short walking distance to The Sloop Inn gastropub. There is plenty of parking available by Bantham, with charges from £3.50 per day, so make sure you have change on you as it’s a bit tricky to find parking otherwise. There are toilets in the car park, and from May to October from 10am until 6pm there is also lifeguard cover on the beach. All in, Bantham has something to offer everyone throughout the year and is one of many beautiful locations to spend time while you’re in South Devon.

July 2023

One of the most beautiful and relaxing places on earth.

June 2023

Worth the £4.50 to park for the afternoon plenty of walking and rock pools to explore, a good wide sandy beach for people with children

April 2022

Great beach particularly at low tide

October 2021

The most extaordinary place and great for kids. Lots to see and do - great sand and very shallow waters so very safe. if you get a chance to go on the water tractor that is great.. and do visit the Pub on the island. Great day out.

August 2021

A lovely beach. £6.50 to park for the day - it's a private estate - but a shame that the owners aren't prepared to put some of the money towards improvements to the toilets - one small sink in each of the men's & women's toilets with a malfunctioning tap is not enough for a beach full of people, children & dogs!

August 2019

Lovely beach for gentle surfing with ice creams, coffee, snacks and pizzas close to the car park.

July 2019

Glorious especially at low tide.

April 2019

Best beach in the South Hams.

July 2018

Can get busy with surfers, but a beautiful place with a wide sandy beach. Lots of room for everyone.

April 2018

Beautiful beach. Nightmare of a road (especially in high season) to get to it. Worth it though when you get there.

July 2017

A short walk (less than a mile) from Thurlestone, this is a stunning beach. Lots of shallow water with sand underfoot, truly amazing.

July 2017

Fantastic sandy beach and so big. My dog loved running around and jumping into the water. Plenty of space for all.

April 2017

April 2024

Superb house in an excellent location. Noss Mayo is a beautiful village, two excellent pubs and the walk around the coastal path is amazing

April 2024

We loved our stay despite the weather. The views from the house , especially the enormous master bedroom, were wonderful. Parking was a bonus. The steps could do with some maintenance, with the rain and wet leaves it did make them slippery. They might be a challenge for those less mobile. The village is very quaint and pretty. Lots of good walks nearby and we had a lovely dinner in the Ship.

January 2024

Despite a week of rain, we had a lovely time. We’ve stayed at Churchunder 7 times now and love it every time.

October 2023

Yes we did - but the mattress protector was stained and towels were of a poor standard

September 2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, but used the car only once to go to Saltram House, well worth a visit. Access in and out of Piilory Hill challenging!

August 2023

Had a great stay. Weather mixed but very enjoyable in Noss Mayo.

July 2023

Great stay, loved the property

May 2023

We have stayed in several properties in Noss Mayo but this one has taken gold medal place. The location, view, facilities and layout of the property is excellent. We had a peaceful relaxing stay, even though the Swan Inn is 200 yards away, which is a nightmare, we found ourselves in there every time we walked past it....!!! The headland walk is a must to blow the cobwebs away and stretch those legs, amazing views. Thank you.

May 2023

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly be back!

April 2023

Fabulous location, only bettered by the properties directly on the waterfront. Churchunder was clean, spacious and perfect for an Easter break.

November 2022

Loved the location.

September 2022

This house is in a perfect location in Noss Mayo. The parking spaces were a real bonus. The house, particularly the kitchen was extremely well equipped, and the rooms light and spacious. Perfect for our needs. The outside area however let the house down

August 2022

In spite of the things above we loved our stay in Noss Mayo. The village itself is stunning, helped by some nice weather! The house was very spacious (except the third bedroom - but not really an issue) and very comfortable for us all. Overall we were very glad we had chosen it and my son was delighted to spend a few days there before his wedding - we even had a men's breakfast the day of the wedding on the terrace, for which the open plan area was perfect:)

July 2022

It would be useful to have more than 2 tea towels provided and perhaps oven gloves would be good too.

June 2022

Lovely property in a brilliant location, very clean & spacious. Great view of the estuary, coastal walks on doorstep. 3 pubs within walking distance. Outside area needs improving & maintaining.

April 2022

Lovely views from the property. Disappointed that we were not allowed to open the bedroom balcony doors to sit outside, as they were 'awaiting replacement'. No logs for fire. Wine and pint glasses need replacing as they are looking worn (like they've come second hand from the local pub!) Downstairs loo is faulty/difficult to flush. Badly stained, tired sofa in upstairs bedroom, also curtains at the property were covered in mildew. I understand that older properties have this problem, as I have lived in one myself, but would expect them to be cleaned or replaced as I believe these should be.

September 2021

A very enjoyable stay with a great view over the river

September 2021

Main areas clean just some of cupboards & under beds sofa could do with clean.

Thank you for your feedback which we've passed onto the owner and housekeeper for extra attention next changeover. We hope that you enjoyed your stay. From the Toad Hall Team.

August 2021

Though we were obviously aware that the property is directly next to a church we were not aware that the bells would chime the hours, every hour including 12 o’clock midnight (12 bongs). Disruptive when you are not used to them. One child had to move to the front bedroom in order to reduce the noise. We were told that we may be contacted should the deep clean finish earlier otherwise wait until 5pm, as per your instructions. Noted that when we arrived at 5 there was a “note” attached to the front door stating they had completed it at 1. If that was the case we could have got the “lost” hours back and settled in that much earlier. The property was generally clean but found a relatively large amount of animal hair behind the door to the back bedroom. We were surprised as it had been “deep cleaned”! Just small things but do make a difference. Would return to the same area again and use yourselves. Regards, Neil

August 2021

A beautiful property in an outstanding area

July 2021

Would like to return sometime in the future

June 2021

We had a lovely week. Shame about the weather over the first few days! Noss May is lovely and quiet. Churchunder is in a good location with lovely pubs nearby, that do very nice food. Excellent for walking with our little dog too. Not too far from a few other places we like to visit, such as Salcombe and Kingsbridge. Very nice. Thank you

May 2021

Excellent area great views, great restaurants. Lovely unique walks

May 2021

I felt the cottage needed a bit of TLC .the kitchen lighting was covered in cobwebs and dust. There was cobwebs behind the sofa by the controls for the radiator. The windows would have benefitted from a clean. The mattress in the main bedroom is very stained. The first night there was no mattress protecter and we had to call to find out why. It was supplied the next day. The shower downstairs had to be seen to by the caretaker and was sorted with some drain cleaner. The door onto the balcony had no handle. It was on the sideboard broken off. There did not appear to be a set of keys for the garage door. Garbage was a big issue. There was two bags of rubbish outside on the drive when we arrived. They were still there when we departed. There did not appear to be any bags for recycling only landfill bags. We had to bring the recycling home with us. The table and chairs would benefit from a good clean. They were quite grubby in appearance. Churchunder is a lovely property and not been done on the cheap so it was sad to see it needed some TLC. The beds were comfortable, the sofas were great to relax on in the evening. The upstairs bedroom was lovely with the opening doors to look out at the estuary each morning. The Swan and the Ship were both very good for drinks and food. Amy at the Swan is a great hostess and Lisa at the Ship worked hard to accommodate us for meals. We would go back to Noss Mayo it was the perfect place to visit after lockdown.

Thank you for your feedback which we have forwarded to the owner and housekeeper. The housekeeper apologised for missing the cobwebs on the kitchen lights which are very high. Also that the mattress protector was missed, but glad it was resolved swiftly. The garage is used so frequently as an additional parking space, that it is not locked and a key is not provided. The property uses commercial waste collection which does not use the same recycling system that a domestic home would use, and is collected at a given day during the week so waits in the parking area until collected. Guests are most welcome to use the many recycling facilities nearby should they wish to recycle their waste. We are pleased to note that despite your comments you enjoyed this beautiful area and would return to Noss Mayo. We look forward to welcoming you back, from the Toad Hall team.

October 2020

Lovely to be back in Noss Mayo and back in Churchunder! A really welcome and much enjoyed week all together. Thank you. Can't wait for May to be back for our booked week at Blue Skies again!!

October 2020

Lovely property just sort the freezer!

July 2020

We had a lovely time - the cottage itself was great, the location perfect and we will definitely come back at some point! We loved the Ship Inn - we had lunch there every day - service was super and the food delicious. The lovely landlady even threw in a free dessert on our last day!! And speaking of lovely people, the next door neighbour (to the left as you face the cottage) was very friendly and was considerate enough to try to time her use of a chainsaw to cut down one of their trees for when she though we would be out so it wouldn't disturb us!

August 2019

Lovely property, lovely location

July 2019

Fabulous location, idyllic holiday

July 2019

We were very pleased with the cottage and had a wonderful stay.

May 2019

Lovely cottage providing everything needed for a relaxing holiday.

April 2019

Our second stay at this cottage. Very comfortable and a lovely spot.

September 2018

This is our second stay at Churchunder and it won’t be our last! The photos online are a very good guide to what the property is like inside. It was clean, airy, chic and light. It’s elevated position over looking the estuary, to Newton Ferrers, is definitely part of its draw. There is such a wonderful feeling of space inside, yet of an evening it feels cosy - a neat trick. Loads of wonderful touches inside - reading lights, patio doors (at the front and rear of the house), large comfy sofas, comfortable beds, ample seating (inside and out). Plus, the bonus of being able to bring all our family - i.e. our dog! I cannot fault the property. Indeed, we are already booked to come back next year!

August 2018

We loved our stay at Churchunder as we always do. It's a really bright and airy place to stay. just in the right location. I love waking up in the morning, opening the balcony doors and just lying there watch and listening to Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrets waking up.

July 2018

Fabulous location and property. The only complaint I have is with the refuse collection. There were only two bags provided for a family of 6. On the day we departed the refuse was collected and all the bags nit in the two green bags provided were left uncollected, I then had to drive around looking for a large bin to dump all our bagged rubbish. I failed to find such an amenity and so had to leave the bags at the property.

Many thanks indeed for your feedback which we have passed to the owner and housekeeper. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. The green bags should each accommodate two black sacks of rubbish if well compressed, and recycling banks are available locally (at Riverford Farm Shop) to help alleviate the pressures on rubbish collection. We will ensure directions to this are provided within the property. Once again, delighted you all had a wonderful stay. From the Toad Hall Team.

June 2018

A fabulous house in a lovely spot. Great for access to walks and pubs. Would strongly recommend Chuchunder as a home from home.

May 2018

Churchunder is one of the best holiday homes we have stayed in! We also really enjoyed Noss Mayo - very friendly people and a great pub!

May 2018

Notwithstanding the problems mentioned above, we had very enjoyable stay at Churchunder. It is a lovely holiday home, very well designed & equipped in a beautiful location . It is light and airy, very comfortable and also very dog friendly! We would certainly like to return!

April 2018

January 2018

Really enjoyed our week.

January 2018

Churchunder was an utter delight. It was even lovelier than the photographs on the website suggested. It was an exquisite property. Well maintained, beautifullly furnished, spotless and a real ‘home-from-home’ feel. It’s location in Noss Mayo, is wonderful. From the views at the front, access to pubs, local amenities and the lovely walks from the front door. This is an absolute gem. I should also say that it is a wonderful dog friendly property. Even down to the provision of bowls and a feeding mat. We are returning, already booked for 2018 and hopefully many more years after that.

December 2017

We certainly enjoyed our stay and as it looks like the second niece will get married next year in Newton Ferrers you will be the first that we call!

September 2017

As above- disappointed

September 2017

A lovely stay- perfect for walking along the coastal path. Extremely comfortable house - one of the best, if not the best we have ever stayed.

April 2017

The only thing I would add is a gate between the little courtyard and the steps leading to the garden to stop little people and dogs climbing the steps. Overall a very nice cottage.

March 2017

I thought it was a fabulous place to stay. Beautifully done out, asthetically pleasing and warm and altogether a very relaxing place to be. - the only negative for me, was the lighting in the main bedroom upstairs. The bedside lamps did not work and there was no main light, to light up the whole room. It was dark and the bathroom 'makeup' mirror light was on the blink. - I also thought that on the rear window of the main bedroom should have a venetian blind, as opposed to the roller blinds, so one could let light in, with privacy at that end of the room. - and a chest or drawers in that room would be great, as no where to put clothes for a two week stay. BUT, I hope very much to return. I loved it. Thank you, Stella

September 2016

lovely cottage in a stunning location, 3 very good pubs all a stones throw away, everywhere dog friendly and an added bonus of the coastal path in walking distance.

November 2015

November 2014

We had the most wonderful stay at Churchunder, I can not recommend this property enough it's just lovely. One very tiny thing, I would recommend if you stay in the winter and you are going out in the evening I would take a torch as the steps are very dark and can be a little slippery in the wet, not good when you have been to the pub! But this did not spoil our stay in Churchunder. Second stay with Toadhall Cottages and looking forward to my third stay. Thanks again.

November 2014

Simply fantastic apartment and location. Absolutely nothing to complain about and will certainly be looking at brochure accommodation in the future.

October 2014

Cannot praise Toad Hall Cottages enough for a superb 3 night stay at Churchunder Cottage in Noss Mayo on October 10th 2014. Very easy and efficient booking directing us right to the door. The accommodation was stunning and presented in immaculate order. Absolutely everything utterly possible that we might need was provided and the tray of wine, biscuits, tea, coffee and sugar was gratefully received and we thoroughly enjoyed our short break. The only downside for us was that we couldn't stay longer! We shall definitely book again and send sincere thanks for perfect service all round. (We could find the honesty box so left £1 by the TV for an urgent phone call, many thanks)

May 2013

Churchuner is a 'dream property' in a wonderful location. It is smart, warm, spacious and the views are stunning - Paul, Cassie (labrador) & I loved it and hope we'll be allowed to stay again. The neighbours, especially Greystokes were very friendly & welcoming. Noss Mayo is a special place. The directions were slightly incorrect - Churchunder is just before you pass the Swan on the left not after as it says!!-fortunately 2 locals were outside the pub & they asked the landlord for us!! Also the name plate is almost illegible esp in poor light - but no worries we were ok. Thank you for a lovely hol.
