With lovely views over the village to the sea and coastline, this attractive, contemporary detached house with unusual architectural features is set at the top of Polruan, across the estuary from Fowey. Entered from the open driveway where there is space for 3 cars, a short gravel path leads through the garden to the fully glazed front door, opening to a hallway with central staircase, impressively high ceiling and a stripped wood floor.
Polruan has a small selection of shops and pubs next to the quayside just under half a mile away down the steep hill and a foot ferry operates from here across the river to Fowey where there is a wider selection of amenities. The coves and beaches of Lansallos and Lantic Bay are a short distance away and the South West coastal path offers excellent walking and lovely scenery to Pencarrow Head. Polperro is 5 miles and Looe about 9 miles.

At the far end there is a snug area with a television, Jet-master log fire set into the wall, casual seating next to the slate hearth and double glazed French doors to a Southerly aspect decked patio, ideal for alfresco dining.

An archway leads through to an adjacent kitchen/dining room with a limestone floor, modern fitted units including an electric range cooker and floor length windows overlooking the village and sea beyond. Other kitchen appliances include, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave.

A carpeted staircase leads up to a mezzanine level where there are a utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer.

Light, south facing sitting room with television, wood burner, exposed beamed ceiling, leather settees and patio doors opening to a balcony where the last of the evening sunshine and lovely views out across the rooftops to the sea and coastline can be enjoyed.

The Mediterranean style garden incorporates an uneven paved patio and decked area bordered by flowerbeds, shrubs and tall grasses and enjoys village and countryside views with the sea in the distance - the garden is not enclosed and there is an unguarded drop down to the road below. Garden furniture provided.
If you’re looking for a tranquil seaside setting, you’re sure to love a holiday in Polruan. Built on a steep hill on the mouth of the River Fowey, Polruan is an ancient fishing village and boat-building hub, filled with seaside charm. It’s secluded and unspoilt - the perfect place to relax and unwind. Set across the harbour from its busier neighbour Fowey, Polruan is surrounded by water on three sides, so unsurprisingly holidays here revolve around the sea.
Start your Polruan holiday by waking up to the sight of the water from an old fisherman’s cottage, then spend your day sailing, kayaking or swimming, enjoying creamy Cornish ice creams and crabbing from the quay - you’ll find all the supplies in the quirkily named ‘Winkle Picker’ shop. If you’re a more serious angler, you’ll find plenty of fish in the sea here, including John Dory, mackerel, mullet and bass.
Polruan is situated on a very steep hill, access to some parts of the village can be challenging. Many of the amenities, ferries and cottages in Polruan are accessed via steps and slopes some of which can be steep.
Hop on the ferry to Fowey where you’ll find a wonderful choice of places to eat, from swanky waterfront seafood restaurants and cosy Cornish pubs to bakeries and crab sandwich shacks. Spend time browsing the many boutiques, independent shops and art galleries, then follow the esplanade to Readymoney Cove. This sandy beach is beautifully sheltered, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and sand-free picnics. While in Fowey, you can also hire a little motor boat and explore the stunning surroundings at your own pace, dropping anchor wherever you like.
Back in Polruan, you can join the spectacular clifftop tracks of the South West Coast Path from the top of the village. One of our must-dos when on holiday in Polruan is to follow the coast path to Lantic Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches around, with white sand crystal clear waters. If you’re feeling energetic, hike further still to pretty Polperro and its white-washed cottages.
During your stay, make sure to visit Polruan’s tiny neighbouring village of Bodinnick with its lovely waterside pub, the Old Ferry Inn. It’s here that Daphne du Maurier lived and where she wrote her first novel. In fact, her family still lived in the very same waterfront house, Ferryside. Today, you can celebrate her life and works at Fowey’s annual Festival of Arts and Literature.
From Polruan, you can also visit Charlestown harbour, famed by Poldark, the bustling fishing port of Mevagissey and the world-famous biomes of the Eden Project.

Fowey Aquarium

Fowey is a delightful, historic town in Cornwall and its aquarium is a chance to glimpse marine life from the Cornish coast up close. Small but perfectly formed, the aquarium is brimming with opportunities to learn, playing host to a wide range of fish from the tiny gobies and shannies from the shallows, up to conger eels which inhabit deep wrecks. First established in 1952, the aquarium still retains many of the original tanks. Fresh sea water is pumped in daily at high tide and the filtration is minimal, while the majority of fish are obtained locally from fishermen and anglers. A joy for children and adults, opening times vary so check the website before you visit, and prices start at £4 for adults and £2.50 for children.

What a cute little place this is! When the children were younger we stayed in Fowey every year, and the first thing they always wanted to do was visit the aquarium. It has a small touch pond as well. But - it is TINY - literally in one large room. So as long as you understand it is what it is, you won't be disappointed. A nice way to spend 30 mins when in Fowey but don't go just for this.

St Catherine's Castle

An English Heritage property built in the 1530s, St Catherine's Castle is an early artillery fort overlooking the River Fowey that formed part of the comprehensive system of coastal defense begun by Henry VIII after his break with the Church of Rome. It continued to be modified right up to the Second World War when it still proved useful as part of a more extensive battery, and as a result, it demonstrates well how military architecture, technology and defensive tactics developed over a period of 400 years. It’s open throughout the year, is free to visit at “any reasonable time during daylight hours” – so there you have it.
Polruan Back Beach

In the heart of Polruan, Back Beach is not short of facilities and nearby shops and restaurants. A pretty little beach that’s popular with families, it has beautiful views across the river to Fowey and is a lovely place to watch the world go by with all the boats pottering along in front of you. It’s predominantly a sand beach, leading to a sheltered section of the river, so it’s good for swimming, but there aren’t any lifeguards around. The only complication for access is that it’s very difficult to park in the village, and it’s a considerable walk down the steep hill from the car park at St Saviours, or a ferry ride across the river from Fowey. Therefore, it’s best to combine a visit with a day exploring the village itself to make the most of it.

Between Polruan and Polperro along the coastal path, Lantivet Bay is only accessible at low tide when a sand and pebble beach is revealed. Parking is in the National Trust car park at Polruan, where there are toilets as well, but there aren’t any facilities closer to the beach itself. Dogs are allowed all year round, which is lovely as it’s the perfect beach to incorporate into a walk. The National Trust recommends a charming circular route, starting in the car park and taking in 2.4 miles of beautiful bays and surrounding landscape, and giving you the chance to explore the area with its rich smuggling heritage.

Popular with families, this idyllic sandy cove offers safe swimming, fantastic watersports and interesting rockpools aswell as tempting beach restaurants. If you're feeling active there are plenty of events throughout the year including beach yoga, beach cleans, sailing events, sea swim and stand up paddleboarding events and more. Hire a paddleboard, learn to sail or simply flop on the sand with a good book, the choice is yours. Plenty of parking at the main Polkerris carpark just 200yards from the beach.

We were very happy staying there - a big thank you to all involved. (Only slightly concern was smell of oil fired boiler when on, but it was well contained in the utility room - I’m not familiar with this sort of boiler).
