The traditional fishing village of Polperro, set along the dramatic South Cornish coastline between Looe and Fowey, is steeped in maritime history. Wandering its pretty, narrow, winding streets offers a nostalgic taste of times gone by.
For centuries local families here were reliant on “Polperro pilchards” which were sold right across Europe. Nowadays, there is still an active fishing fleet but their catch is more varied. You can sample their wares in a number of local restaurants, pubs and cafes, or simply sit back and watch the fishermen at work in the harbour as you tuck into a fresh crab sandwich.
Polperro has an abundance of small, twisting lanes, most of which are simply not wide enough for modern vehicles. Some are little wider than footpaths, so leave your car in the main car park at Crumplehorn and from here you can walk, catch the bus or even take a horse and cart the half mile down into the village. The traffic-free zones allow you to explore the winding alleys of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages at your leisure.
It’s easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of people with loaded horse & carts rumbling past during Polperro’s smuggling heyday, or the scores of ladies lining the streets nimbly knitting fishermen’s jumpers, known locally as “knit-frocks”. On the harbour-side you can visit the Polperro Heritage Museum of Fishing and Smuggling to immerse yourself more fully in Polperro’s rich history.
The village and harbour are best seen at high tide, but at low tide, a small beach appears so it’s possible to go for a paddle. The picturesque South West Coast Path runs right through the Polperro. If you walk east along the coast you’ll reach the beautiful Talland Bay, or alternatively hop in your car to visit other nearby sandy beaches including Seaton, Downderry, Lansallos and Lantic Bay. Regular boat trips run from the harbour offering fantastic views of the coastline and day trips to nearby Looe, and you might even spot dolphins and seals on your way!
A holiday cottage in Polperro offers a wonderfully traditional seaside escape on the dramatic South East Cornish coast.
In the main car park at the entrance to the village (charges apply/cash only). Alternatively, Toad Hall Cottages have some spaces to rent on a first come, first served basis in the village - please enquire at time of booking.

This is good Cornish homestyle cooking at it's best and will not disappoint!

July 2018
we loved this place! the food was excellent. We went to a number of excellent places in cornwall (fifteen, rick steins plus several local places) and this was by far the best. The food was 'home cooking' style but beautifully down using superb ingredients, the portions were huge (too big!) and the service very friendly and welcoming. Whats more, it was just on the door step. I would say this is a must visit for anyone going to polperro.

June 2023
A secret and rather surprising home to fine dining in Polperro. We had a fabulous meal there - excellent ingredients expertly cooked and presented. The menu was adventurous and innovative without being silly. Wine prices were notably reasonable and the choice very good. Unlike so many fine dining rooms this one does not fleece you when it comes to the wine list. Highly recommended!
September 2019
Lovely Restaurant with great food. Had the taster menu which was very filling but worth it. Good value and staff very friendly.

Polperro Museum
(Less than a mile)
(14)
In The Warren overlooking the harbour, the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing houses a collection of exhibits and 19th century photographs that date back to a time when both smuggling and fishing thrived in Polperro. It brings to life the little village’s beautiful history and the lives of the people who lived there, having depended on fishing for generations and been home to no less than three factories close by at one point. A delightful opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about local history in this little Cornish village, entry is £1.75 for adults and 50p for children.
Very interesting museum. Well worth a visit
August 2023
Very informative hour spent in the museum. Would recommend Cafe is lovely

September 2019
Great! And dog friendly!Worth a look and the tea rooms were great.
July 2019
I love a bit of local history and if your like minded, you'll enjoy this place. lots of information on the local boats and fishermen. it would take you a while to read it all.
August 2018
Well worth visiting to get a feel and understanding of how the once thriving community of Polperro used to be in former pilchard fishing (and smuggling) days. The old photos and exhibits transport you back to a very different world (though adults will undoubtedly find the museum more interesting than small children).
May 2018
This museum is packed with interesting facts and some great photos, so even though small we spent a good hour there. Definitely worth a visit to learn more on the local history (including about the more recent floods and storms), fishy facts and smuggling tales!

Polperro Model Village
(Less than a mile)
(8)
An utterly charming day out for the family, Polperro Model Village and Land of Legend is two attractions in one. The village is, quite literally, the coastal town in miniature and has been around for more than 60 years, surviving both fire and floods – so don’t underestimate the strength of these little guys. Meanwhile, Land of Legend is your chance to explore Cornish folklore, derived from tales of pirates and smugglers who thrived in and around Cornwall from the early modern period through to the 19th century. It is a unique show of lights, sound and animation. The site also houses a model railway, and prices are £3 for adults and £2 for children, open daily from Easter to October.
A lovely attraction for Polperro. Very well thought out and created.
July 2022
Very interesting
July 2022
Lovely little attraction. We were keen to support local businesses so popped in here.
May 2022
Brilliant fun and interesting place to visit
June 2021
This attraction is much more than just a model village. We really loved it.
June 2021
Great value for money. Worth a visit.
September 2020
Disappointed not open
July 2020
Good attraction for young children rather than older children and adults. The miniature village and Land of Legend are charming (though perhaps a little 'worn' by modern standards). There is an interesting audio/visual on the Polperro floods of 1976 and 1993 and a separate small model railway.

Polperro Beach
(Less than a mile)
(22)
In South East Cornwall, Polperro is widely thought to be one of the area’s most picturesque fishing villages. Brimming with whitewashed cottages all the way down the harbour, the beach sits in a sheltered position under the cliffs, only visible at low tide and close to the harbour. Unsurprisingly, it’s a popular destination and can get busy in the summer months. Dogs are not permitted at the beach during peak season, from Easter to October, and while parking in the village itself is all but impossible, but there’s a large car park about a mile up the valley with a regular shuttle service going up and down the hill.
Just beautiful??
November 2023
We have visited The Blue Peter many times on our holidays to Polperro over the past 20 year or more. There is always a warm and friendly welcome from the staff. The food is excellent. This is a proper pub.
July 2023
beautiful little cove -- just watch the tide times ..........
August 2022
We didn't really use the beach but I did see someone allow their dog to foul on the beach and, although they cleared it up to a certain extent, I don't think this is really acceptable when children are going to be playing in the sand.
June 2022
Lovely small beach
June 2022
Fabulous
September 2021
Lovely small beach very clean with beautiful views
July 2021
Great beach.
June 2021
Polperro a beautiful place , a lovely fishing village
May 2021
The most beautiful little cove featuring caves to explore and the 'net loft' out on the rugged rocks. The sea is a divine colour and I can't wait to come back and swim at a warmer time of year! I enjoyed two mornings in the sun and the peace of being out there first thing exploring this little beach area, it was a great start to those days!
May 2021
This Is a glorious, quaint fishing village with narrow winding alleys and a beautiful little harbour. It is more suited to couples rather than families as there are not many facilities for children, other than a small beach at low tide.
September 2020
Perfect . Love love love
August 2020
The children enjoyed exploring the caves and beachcombing when the tide was out, too many dogs off the lead but it was out of season. Main reason for leaving the review is to strongly recommend you take the two hour fishing trip with either Chris or Olly Puckey on the Smuggler. We had the boat to ourselves and had an excellent value for money trip which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Caught 3 mackerel and a pollock which we took back to the cottage and cooked for tea. A delight! Oh, and we went for brunch afterwards at House on the Props - definitely recommended, I've never had a full English on a baguette before, it was awesome!
October 2019
Our favourite place to visit with wonderful little shops, restaurants and art galleries to browse in on the walk down to the quay. Amazing views as you leave the village and head on the coastal cliff path back towards Looe. We took our dog and he enjoyed exploring the numerous rock pools on the beach. We also explored the right hand coastal path and stumbled across a secluded pool amongst the rocks - steep ascent but well worth the hike! People were bathing in the pool as it was a real sun trap..
August 2019
Small but lovely
May 2019
Beautiful beach if you love beach combing.
April 2019
Easy access, dog ok
October 2018
We visited Polperro harbour/beach with our springer spaniel and although the write-up says no dogs allowed, they are allowed, just on a lead between 10am and 6pm, although beach is small, the sea is safe to swim in and not full of huge rocks, lovely ????
August 2018
Lovely clean small beach.
May 2018
Polperro is a magic place. It is so pretty with its winding streets and old cottages and the harbour with its fishing boats. The residents are so friendly and welcoming and there’s a wide choice of restaurants and cafes. I particularly recommend Michelle’s for fantastic food and a real welcome. As a woman on my own I dined there, as elsewhere, with no feeling of awkwardness. Breakfast at the House on the Props just unbeatable! Spring is one of the best times to visit for the wonderful coastal walks and the masses of wild flowers. When you visit, think about the parking situation before you go as it needs organising, but many rentable cottages have spaces provided in the main car park and PauI who runs a little motorised transport system for luggage is very helpful and reliable. I am one of the thousands of people who just love Polperro and every time I visit feel a great reluctance to leave.
May 2018
Enjoyed the harbour etc and all the shops but had dogs so did not visit the beach but a beautiful setting.
June 2017
really lovely, a must visit desination.
May 2017
Talland Bay
(2 miles)
(16)
A small, quiet beach between Looe and Polperro, Talland Bay actually comprises two beaches, one of which has sand both at low and high tide and is good for swimming all the time, while the other is less sandy and is easiest to swim from at high tide. There is a ramp for launching boats from the main beach and there are lots of small coves and tidal pools to swim in as well, so it’s a delightful area to explore in the water. Parking is limited, but there is a small, free car park by the beach and paid parking at The Beach Café, all of which provide easy access to the sand. Thanks to the nearby café, visitors can also benefit from the accompanying facilities, on-site shop, and tuck into Roskillys Cornish Ice-Cream as well.
Sit in the graveyard on the bill and look down to Talland bay. Tranquillity so special. I never fail to go there when I am down. The church is beautiful so much history.
October 2023
Having spent many a happy childhood holiday here - 60 years ago, so wonderful to return. It is so beautiful and with addition of 2 Beach cafes - even better now.
June 2023
Beautiful little bay with a great cafe overlooking it. Dogs allowed on the beach Oct to end of May.....
October 2021
Although there was indeed sand in one of the bays it was largely covered with seaweed at the water's edge when we were there. All very natural.
October 2021
Lovely bay, shingle beach
September 2021
Not a great beach and a bit smelly.
August 2021
Unfortunately the seaweed on the beach made it very smelly and also lots of flies. Beautiful apart from that!
June 2021
Lovely walk from polperro along coast. Cafe in picturesque bay pretty with little huts to shelter. Only downside was the coffee not good at all.
May 2021
Beautiful bay. A little smelly from the seaweed but rock pools galore and quiet
October 2020
Very interesting beach with rock pools at low tide and fascinating multi-coloured rocks, great for photography.
October 2019
A lovely place to walk too on the way to Looe. Hard work back up the hill to polperro, bit it's worth it!
October 2018
The coastal walk from Polperro to Talland Bay is outstanding. As both are scenic, (and Talland Bay benefits from an excellent cafe and free toilets), it makes for an excellent morning or afternoon trip in good weather.
May 2018
Lovely beach, beautiful walk from Polperro. Dogs requested to be kept on leads (which I suppose is preferable to a ban!). Families seem to use this beach alot.
May 2018
An interesting beach at low tide and lovely views.
April 2018
Brilliant. Bit seaweedy. Wear beach shoes incase of weever fish stings.
August 2017
Great beach pet friendly beach with rock pools etc for the dogs to explore
June 2017
Looe Beach
(4 miles)
(20)
In East Looe, the beach sits directly in front of the old town, sheltered by the Banjo Pier and overlooked from the east by the hillside of Mount Ararat. A good family beach that has something for everyone, at low tide the sandy location is safe for swimming although it’s recommended you steer clear of the river mouth beyond the pier. Unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed on this beach at any time of the year, but Hannafore beach in West Looe is dog friendly. The beach backs on to a seafront walkway which runs its length all the way to Second Beach to the east, where it tends to be less busy and it’s good for snorkeling. As it’s in the centre of the town there are lots of facilities and cafes nearby, but in the summer it’s a very popular spot and parking can be tricky, with traffic prohibited during these months, so be prepared for a bit of a walk.
Some days quite busy but great facilities and loads of activities
August 2023
Great, despite the early season seaweed, the tractor cleared it very well.
April 2023
LOVE LOVE LOVE
July 2022
All of the beaches around Looe are worth visiting - and the coastal path is a must. Fuel for the hike? Not listed in the reviews is Sarah’s Pasties which has the best pasties (we ate a lot of pasties during the week!). They were also one of the few eateries in the area which could provide something for someone needing a gluten and dairy free diet. We were able to preorder pasties that met her dietary requirements.
February 2022
Wonderful beach
December 2021
Safe and sandy beach perfect for kids
August 2021
I enjoyed the beach as it is very flat, which is important at 70, and I even had a paddle. The beach was very clean.
July 2021
One of the best beaches I have visited. It is nice and level and I was even able to have a paddle. It was very clean.
July 2021
Great beach so close all amenities
July 2021
Such a lovely beach. A shame people didn’t socially distance or even attempt to do so.
August 2020
Spent a week at new year in this beautiful apartment. Everything you could possibly need was in there. Lovely comfy bed, spotless clean and the bonus of a sea view. Central for everything. Will definitely return.
January 2020
Wonderful clean beach
October 2019
Perfect for the children but beware of seagulls. We always take a beach tent so children can safely enjoy their food and ice cream!
June 2019
Lovely beach suitable for everyone
June 2019
A wonderful place to sit relax eat an ICECREAM or a pastie, if the seagulls will let you! Perfect beach x
August 2018
You cannot fail to love Looe beach, early morning, during the day or for and evening stroll. A super clean beach.
May 2018
Lovely sandy beach. No dogs allowed but there is a small cove at the far end which allows dogs to enjoy their holiday too with a dip in The English Channel.
May 2018
Looe beach and seafront is cleaned every day (in season?) and looks good. A joy to sit and watch the sea and people passing by.
April 2018
Really good! Good sand and sea. Activities for the kids too. Difficult to get to cos no parking nearby.
August 2017
Lovely beach and even when it was busy didn't feel overcrowded
August 2017
Lantic Bay
(4 miles)
Lantivet Bay
(4 miles)
(1)
Between Polruan and Polperro along the coastal path, Lantivet Bay is only accessible at low tide when a sand and pebble beach is revealed. Parking is in the National Trust car park at Polruan, where there are toilets as well, but there aren’t any facilities closer to the beach itself. Dogs are allowed all year round, which is lovely as it’s the perfect beach to incorporate into a walk. The National Trust recommends a charming circular route, starting in the car park and taking in 2.4 miles of beautiful bays and surrounding landscape, and giving you the chance to explore the area with its rich smuggling heritage.
Parked in the National Trust Car Park and took the footpath towards the beach. Beautiful views.

Yes we did enjoy our week at Dene Cottage, it was beautifully equipped and perfectly situated in the village. Handy to have the allocated parking space too. Thank you for a lovely week!
March 2024
Lovely cottage, and a lovely picturesque little village. Lots f very friendly local shops, would recommend Pedyr's bakery and Clements & Hope cafe. Will definitely come back!
September 2023
Really enjoyed our stay it was lovely , I am not one to complain but thought I would add my comments so that this can be sorted for future guests . I would not hesitate to stay again but just wanted to point out the few minor issues.
Thank you so much for your feedback, we have now taken action about the cleanliness so future guests don't experience this.

Absolutely loved our holiday in Polperro. It's like a home from home and the cottage is fabulous. We all felt comfortable and relaxed the moment we stepped through the door. Thank you for allowing us the pleasure of staying in your lovely cottage.
We are so pleased to hear this, as is the owner who works hard to ensure standards are high! Many thanks

April 2023
We thoroughly loved our stay and will hopefully return in the autumn
October 2022
A lovely stay in a very good location in Polperro. Comfy beds and a stylish living room with log burner. A bonus that it has a very good sized courtyard garden, something many cottages in Polperro don't have!
Thank you for your review, we agree that the courtyard is a huge advantage!

Another year, another cottage, slowly working our way around this beautiful village! Possibly favourite yet. Fabulous comfortable stay, regular visits to the Blue Peter and Legion and amazing walks. Can't wait until we return in six months time. Thank you Dene cottage.

July 2022
Brilliant and thank you to the Toad Hall staff for making our move between cottages, relatively easy. Fabulous stay.

Have stayed in Dene cottage several times over the years, but before it was refurbished. Very tasteful but remains homely and comfortable. We have been visiting Polperro, every year since 1968 and I still love it. Also thankyou so much for the welcome bag plus, milk in the fridge. Very thoughtful and gratefully received. Due back in September. Thankyou Dene Cottage
July 2022
The cottage was beautiful and very comfortable. We have stayed many times here over the years and it still remains one of our favourite places to stay.
July 2022
Stayed previously this time it wss better than ever before
July 2022
Stayed here a few years ago was really nice then but now special. Love the new dressings et cetera love Polperro will be back soon. Thank you
June 2022
Wow! What a beautiful cottage. From the moment we entered we felt at home. We've stayed in many different cottages in Polperro and all agreed Dene cottage was by far the best! The location was perfect, the furnishings clean and comfortable. We all enjoyed a great night sleep in the super comfy beds. The outside space was the icing on the cake! Thank you Dene cottage we will be back!!
July 2021
Fabulous little cottage I watered the plants

July 2021
Loved Polperro, ideal location for my elderly parents as they could easily walk to the front and spend some time people and seagull watching. Shame there is no recycling in the car park at polperro - not your fault but a comment for the village in general. The Three Pilchards did us very proud and the bakery was really too good for the waistline. Toad Hall Cottages have been superb to deal with throughout despite the hiccups with the housekeeping - thank you very much.
Thank you for taking time to send us your review and so glad you enjoyed this lovely cottage. The recycling in Polperro is a situation the whole of Polperro have been trying to address over the years, we are still working hard to find a solution.

June 2021
Brilliant Accomodation best I have stayed in at Polperro by far
May 2021
Recycling is difficult, polperro is so beautiful and so is Dene Cottage
May 2021
A home from home. Very comfortable and stylish.
September 2020
Yes, the location was perfect- very quiet and close to everything. The vegetation next to the parking space needs cutting back as it is quite a small space and difficult to get out of the car with all of the vegetation. The cottage was more spacious than the pictures show, which was nice.
August 2020
We loved our stay at Dene Cottage. The location, quality of furnishings and decoration was superb! We will definitely consider Dene Cottage for our next stay in Polperro.
July 2020
we enjoyed our stay but found things 'different' due to the covid situation
September 2019
Despite one or two things that could have been better with just a little effort, they did not spoil our holiday and we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the cottage.
August 2019
We had a lovely holiday. Location near the harbour was excellent. The cottage is very nice and comfortable. I would stay again. Toad Hall staff are very helpful. Driving into the village to drop off luggage outside the cottage was a nightmare on a busy Saturday afternoon - road is super narrow. Also the parking spaces in Landaviddy Lane aren't that easy to get out of although it was handy to have the car just a few minutes walk away.
May 2019
We don't know how Tina could bare to part with the cottage, We wish the new owners all the very best wishes, and would like to thank them for allowing us to sharing the cottage :) for a couple of weeks :) ! We had a really lovely time at 'Dene Cottage' in Polperro. Thanks again for the use of the cottage (it being our second visit :) !
September 2018

August 2018
We had a brilliant time!
July 2018
Always a pleasure to stay in Dene cottage in Polperro, cottage is so homely and Polperro is so welcoming, had a lovely stay at the cottage, lovely little shops, bars, great food and lastly excellent cream teas.
June 2018
This is the fifth time we have stayed in Dene Cottage and we have already booked for next year. Toadhall and the cottage owner are always extremely helpful.
May 2018
We can honestly say we had a really good holiday whilst we were staying at Dean Cottage its beautifully decorated and furnished, with all the appliances you need, We did meet Tina the owner and she was lovely and helpful, The only negative thing anyone with problems going up or down stairs may find difficulty getting from street level to the front door as there are several high steps, although there is an Hand rail, but the cottage is quite a way from the main car park, Toad Hall cottages does have a few parking spaces closer but still at least a 5 minute walk, You can get a car to Dean cottage to drop off and pick up luggage but there is no parking allowed, however to put this into perspective Polperro and I think all of Cornwall appears to be hill country although this was my first visit to Cornwall so I could be wrong. Over all its a lovely cottage to be able to use for an holiday and less than 100 yards from the Harbour, and quieter than you may think at night, I think we may go back again next year if we can.
October 2017
A fabulous stay as always in Polperro . Dene cottage is a delightful and spacious property and would definitely stay there again
October 2017
Yes, clean and comfortable in an excellent location.
August 2017

June 2017
This is our third stay in Dene Cottage and we plan to go back again next year. The cottage is very clean and very well equipped. Tina was very helpful and called to check that all was ok which was a nice touch. The weather was great so we made full use of the courtyard garden.
June 2017
We had a lovely stay that was very enjoyable, just too hot in bed at night.
April 2017
We had a fantastic holiday at Dene cottage and we all agree it will not be our last holiday at this excellent cottage. The cottage is ideally situated in the centre of Polperro and we cannot fault the actual cottage. Excellent.
November 2016

We have had a lovely time at Dene cottage well presented.... secluded court yard perfect suntrap we must have chosen the best week of the year would highly recommend !!! Toad hall cottages were also very helpful on our arrival we had a problem with broken key in car park padlock which was dealt with without delay ....would also like to recommend Toad Hall for their on going Excellent service!!!
July 2016
Friendly and experienced staff at toad hall who made booking of cottage and car parking easy and from start to finish of our booking arrival and departure everything went smoothly.
May 2016
Toad Hall Cottages are an excellent company. So helpful right from our initial enquiry. We found our perfect cottage but it said they only accept 1 dog. We have 2. They rang the owner for us who agreed we could bring both as they were well behaved. They also helped us contact the owner of the cottage when we couldn't get hold of her to locate the key safe instructions. Such brilliant service. A fantastic company who we will use again and again! It's just a shame you only cater for the West Country ... we also love Snowdonia and the Lakes and so it would be great if you covered these areas too!!
October 2015
Will book again for next year
July 2015
everything needed to help to have a easy stress freee holiday was done for us.
July 2015
Very happy with the service provided by Toad Hall Cottages, lovely people who know the area they operate within so could make an informed choice will be booking again soon :-)
June 2015
The cottage is great and spotlessly clean. This is the second time we have stayed in Dene Cottage and hope to stay again next year. The garden/courtyard is a real sun trap and we would have loved to have had breakfast/lunch outside but there was no table.

We are very glad to say that a table and chairs was in the charming garden at Dene Cottage from Easter 2015 onwards.

Michelle's Sunday lunch is one of the best ever. A choice of chicken, beef, lamb, veggie or mixed meat in standard or smaller plate sizes. Amazing Yorkshire puddings, fantastic roast potatoes, and gravy to die for. We booked in 2 months in advance as it is almost impossible to get a table on the day. This is good Cornish homestyle cooking at it's best and will not disappoint!
August 2019
Absolutely first class cuisine. When I dined here alone on a previous visit the staff went all out to make me feel comfortable and looked after. Thoroughly recommend.

October 2018
Excellent food and very good lady owner. Top marks.
July 2018
we loved this place! the food was excellent.
June 2018

Wonderful food and host, well worth the money

September 2021
This is a great little, un-fancy museum with loads of information. It's worth spending time there.
