Visitors love this beautiful, Georgian market town that’s also a popular sailing resort. Lymington boasts three marinas and was the training ground for local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, you can see the golden letter box at the bottom of the high street, painted in recognition of his success with a fifth Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Lymington is one of the largest towns in the New Forest and has a key role in the life of the area. This charming town is packed full of history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and is an important port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent. Human habitation in the Lymington area dates back to the Iron Age, and a 6th Century BC hill fort known locally as Buckland Rings can still be seen today. As with many other towns and villages in the area, Lymington thrived during the Norman Conquest, thanks to its key location on the south coast.

If you want to leave your car at home and come by train, Lymington Rail line is a branch off the main Waterloo to Weymouth line. Once here, you’ll find regular buses with stops all over the New Forest and coastline.

There are lots of places to walk and amble in and around Lymington, these include characterful cobbled streets leading down to the town quay and harbour – a great place to relax and watch harbour life - fishing boats land their haul, yachts and leisure boats coming in and out.

There are lots of town events, activities and day trips from Lymington including fishing trips, boat and sailing charters, canoeing and kayaking, diving trips, mini cruises and ferry over to the Isle of Wight with your car or as a foot passenger.

Saturdays in the high street are a hive of activity, with a weekly street market selling everything from plants, clothes and household goods to home-made cakes, fruit and veg and a whole lot more. Shopping is great with a high street brands mixed with an interesting and eclectic mix of independent retailers and boutiques. There are a few supermarkets and specialist food shops for provisions to take back to your cottage, including one that makes their own home-made dishes and desserts and freezes them.

Lymington also has a number of really good eateries in and around the town, with the main concentration being around the high street. Lanes of Lymington serves superb food and also runs a cookery school. The Elderflower, whose chef/proprietor hails from the famous 5* Chewton Glen Hotel is superb.

During the warmer months you can relax in the bandstand gardens and enjoy some free musical entertainment. A few minutes’ further on are Lymington Sea Water Baths, the oldest of their kind in the UK, dating back to 1833. A short walk further on is the start of Keyhaven Nature Reserve. Not a good experience, checked website and it stated that food is served until 8pm on Sunday. Arrived with 6 people at 7pm to be told kitchen closes at 430 on Sundays and the keep forgetting to ask Fullers to update website. Didn’t seem interested in serving us a drink was more interested in chatting to couple with Yappy dog at the bar.. Looks like a nice pub from the outside. Must have just have caught staff on a off night on this occasion.

February 2024

Visited the Fishermen's Rest, which was an easy 5 minute walk from the accommodation. July 2017

We enjoyed an early evening meal at thus pub. It was very convenient to our cottage. Everything was lovely. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The food delicious and the wine list pretty reasonable too. The ambience was good. It's a pretty traditional pub in its decor and that is meant to be positive because it helped create a very warm, comfortable and inviting environment. We will definitely return if we come back to Lymington.

The Ship Inn - Lymington
(Less than a mile)

In a superb location on the town’s quay with large decking area to the side - great for watching the world go by. The bar is well stocked, with an impressive selection of drinks. Due to being on the quay, the pub can get busy, so if you want to eat it’s worth booking ahead. The food is great, a step above the usual pub fare and comes in generous, hearty portions.

A nice late evening family meal was taken here. Ok Pub, A bit quiet but very spacious. Overpriced like most things in the New Forest and waitress could have been a bit less open with her comments to one of our party who was made to feel a bit embarrassed as the only person ordering a starter.

February 2024

Had a very nice Sunday lunch here. Pleasant staff, and nice surroundings.

Poor and slow service with no proper management of order taking, and floor service.

We were disappointed with the service, waiting a long time for desserts and with two young boys this was not ideal. Food descriptions not very accurate. One order was the Massaman curry which was not as expected and the chicken, bacon and avocado salad had no avocado!

Wonderful 1833 pool - I preferred the 20 degree temperature to the stifling 30 degree in the Leisure Centre. Very friendly staff. The most spacious pool I've swum in anywhere. Swam here most days £4.00 for two hours a bargain.

September 2023

We swam here pretty much every morning of our stay that it was open. Good value for general swimming - the more expensive inflatables course looked like great fun but we didn't try it ourselves. Such a good way to start the day, and a great facility for the town as there's no beach. Would have been even better if it opened earlier or later in the day.

September 2023

We spent an afternoon there and the children enjoyed the inflatables. The weather was good. Changing rooms not clearly signed though.

August 2023

Brilliant place loved it although water was bracing

August 2023

This is a must for everyone, especially for teenagers who love a challenge. We left our two on the assault course for 2 hours whilst we wandered the salt marshes on the Solent Way nearby. The ice cream kiosk next to the baths is value for money too and sells the local ice cream with generous portions.

August 2022

Planning to go there as looked good with all the fun equipment you could hire but found the cost for a family of six (two adults, four children) too expensive so did not go after all.

August 2021

We had a great time on the inflatables one morning. My son loved it! Friendly staff and good to hire wet suits.

August 2021

Did paddle boarding here, a great safe place to give it a try.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

October 2023

We enjoyed our stay but things like comfier sofas would have been useful - the seat cushions slid off a couple of times a day!

September 2023

The house was fantastic, well positioned and well equipped.

Great multi generation property. Lovely and light. Easy walk into Lymington. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay.

August 2022

Yes! We had a wonderful stay at Genoa cottage. It would be helpful if the broken blinds for the bi-fold doors were mended! One was missing, one worked the other didn’t.

October 2021

A lovely stay in a stunning house. Minor niggles (above) but looking forward to our next visit. No problems in recommending.

October 2021

Yes we had a lovely week and all was even better than expected

August 2021

Yes enjoyed stay , but for the price the little things I have mentioned do matter . Equipment has scored low due to the issues I highlighted not working in the feed back ... and the cleanliness marked lower due to all the rubbish and bottles piled outside the garden gate on arrival .

July 2021

Our third stay and definitely not our last! Love this property so much, the 'outside in' feel in the summer weather is fabulous. Super quiet and super handy for the town , harbour and Solent way.

May 2021

Our party was the first in the house since last October, but first impressions still bright and fresh! We were lucky with the weather, missing the storms elsewhere! Delighted with the local pubs and the ale on draughty and excellent meals. And enthusiastic Service and welcome we got everywhere.

May 2021

We very much enjoyed our stay and look forward to booking the property again in the future.

October 2020

Lovely house. Great to have downstairs bedroom and bathroom for multi generational holidays. Comprehensive pre holiday communications. Thank you.

October 2020

We thoroughly enjoyed our week, the house is very nice but as a top quality let the small things mentioned let it down. It is in an excellent location with lots of things to do and see, and nice bars and restaurants. Definitely a location which appeals to travellers like us (retired couples, who travel regularly). We appreciate that it is coming to the end of the season but the house just looked a bit tired and the garden needs some attention.

September 2020

Stunning property which belies its exterior, great location in quiet residential area. Beautifully modernised. The Haven restaurant is great.

September 2020

Yes very much. Lovely property and garden. Cleaning could be more thorough and leave products for us to keep it clean
