This outstandingly beautiful classic detached and predominantly thatched cottage is situated beside the creek at Goodshelter, a lovely hamlet on the edge of the Kingsbridge/Salcombe estuary. It is approximately one mile from the village of East Portlemouth, with ferry to Salcombe, in an idyllic location within two acres of unspoilt, partly wooded grounds. The garden borders the stream that runs into the creek and has areas of lawn with shrubs and an attractive pond. The cottage is as pretty inside as out, the owner having gone to great lengths to make this an extremely comfortable home, with good quality carpets and furnishings, yet retaining all the olde worlde charm, with exposed beams, old fireplaces and stripped pine doors.
Entrance hall with flagstone floor and rugs. Sitting/dining room with comfortable three piece suite, dining table and chairs, French doors to garden and patio/terrace. Second sitting room with open fire, TV with Freeserve, video/DVD, pretty window seat, door to drive. Kitchen with polished pine units, ceramic tiled worktops, oil fired Rayburn cooker, electric hob, built-in oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and walk-in larder cupboard. Washing machine/tumble dryer. Additional freezer in garage/boat store. Cloakroom with WC and basin. Upstairs: Dual aspect master double bedroom (5ft bed). Further double bedroom (4ft 6in bed). Two single bedrooms(3ft beds). Bathroom with bath, hand held shower attachment, basin and WC.
Garden as previously described. Garden furniture. The owner’s rowing boat is available for use on the creek at your own risk.
Parking for 3 cars.
- Included: Bed linen, towels (guests must provide their own beach towels), WiFi, cot, high chair, heating (night storage) electricity and initial basket of logs for the fire..
- Pets: Pet charge £25.00 per pet per week. (£30.00 from Jan 2019)
- Telephone: With honesty box. Mobile reception poor.
- Local Facilities: Nearest beach 1 mile, pub 2 miles. Kingsbridge 8 miles, Salcombe 12.5 miles by road or 1 mile by passenger ferry from East Portlemouth.
Please note: At spring high tides (which occur throughout the year) and for one hour either side of high water, it may be difficult crossing the fords on the tidal road that accesses the property. On these occasions it is possible to park nearby and reach the cottage using the creek footpath. Tide Tables will be forwarded to guests with their travel directions.
Another relaxing and peaceful visit to this charming cottage with its lovely garden
Most definitely yes. We loved the garden and location. Would love to come back.
Accessibility reports were spot on! You obviously care about your disabled customers!! Greatly appreciated!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The cottage is in a lovely location and the garden is stunning. We would definitely consider returning for another stay.
I caught my first Bass, whilst flyfishing in the creek, mere feet from the cottage garden. It doesn't get better than that! Spotted flycatchers nesting in the garden and wonderful birdsong were delightful. Superb cottage, garden and location made it a lovely holiday, enhanced by brilliant weather.
This was our eighth visit to Goodshelter. We love the cottage, the garden and it's secluded position.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Goodshelter, so much so we have book another week in October and also hope to go again next Spring.
A lump of plaster had fallen down from behind the beam above the fireplace which we only spotted the first evening of our stay. The plaster had fallen into the fireplace which (understandably) meant the cleaner hadn't been able to spot it. Not important to us and didn't make a difference to our stay at all, but just letting you know that it was like that when we arrived. Thanks for another great holiday!
We continue to be delighted by the way that the owners have maintained the garden laid out by George and Lavender Meade-King from the 1950s to 1980s.
Lovely holiday in a beautiful spacious very well presented chocolate box cottage and garden. Getting to the isolated and tidal location was sometimes difficult but this added to the interest. The only thing we would have liked was a proper shower and from a male point of view, a toilet seat that stayed up on it's own. We all loved what we called the "Quiet Lounge and dinning room" without the temptation of T.V. with everything, although our 13 month old grandson made it anything but quiet. We had a lovely week, the weather even helped for March.
Thank you for your feedback, we have passed this to the owners. At high tide the property does need to be accessed via the path as cars will not get through to the drive. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope you return soon. Many Thanks, The Toad Hall Team.

Goodshelter is such a picturesque cottage, with an absolutely beautiful, large sunny garden, stretching along the stream valley. A place to really relax and even enjoy some rowing on the nearby creek with the rowing boat supplied. We will definitely return.
this was a beautiful cottage with the most enchanting garden we loved it and would definitely go back...hopefully in the summer
Many thanks for a lovely holiday
