The breath-taking cliff top walks with spectacular views, great beaches, seaside restaurants and thriving wildlife make this a perfect holiday base.

The New Forest National Park, with its free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys is just a short drive or cycle away, as is the Georgian market town of Lymington, for all your shopping and sailing needs. From here, you can also catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight for an exciting day out! This flourishing, thriving yet very traditional seaside village, encapsulates both coast and forest in one. The quaint little high street wraps around the village green, dotted with benches to eat your fish and chips or ice creams as you watch the world go by.

Everything you’ll need for your holiday is here, as well as some of the very best restaurants and eateries in the New Forest. We’d recommend Verveine Fishmarket and Restaurant and La Perle for fine dining.  For a quirky vibe and scrummy food try Raft Rocks and you can find excellent pub food, history and heritage at The White Horse, and The Smugglers Inn. Cafés in Milford on Sea worth seeking out include Inger Lise’s Coffee Bar which specialises in Scandi cakes and bakes, and Jones and Co Deli offer a sublime selection of deli goods, cheese and artisan breads. On the cliff top overlooking the sea pop in to The Needles Eye Café for very good food and amazing views.

There are lots of fun things to do in Milford on Sea. The pretty pebble beach lined by colourful beach huts that visitors can hire, is safe for swimming. Walk west to where the cliffs have eroded to reveal a brilliant spot for fossil hunters, you’ll often see beach fishing here too. Buy some crab lines and head over to Sturt Pond Bridge and go crabbing, or take the mile and a half walk along the pebble spit to King Henry VIII’s coastal fortress Hurst Castle. Less than a mile away (a 20-minute walk) is the hamlet and harbour Keyhaven – an access point to a stunningly beautiful nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). From here, you can hire your own motor boat, go sailing, kayaking, book a trip on a high-speed RIB or take a fishing trip. There are instructors who can teach you to paddle board, windsurf and kite surf, or simply bring down a dingy and spend time pootling around the marshes and ponds in the nature reserve. If you love watching birds, there’s a ‘hide’ to view the abundant wildlife as well as common and rare birds.

Beach House - Milford on Sea
(Less than a mile)

(18)

An excellent pub serving local draft ales and good quality food, in a fantastic art deco building, which still retains the original features such as stained-glass windows and oak panelling. In addition, there are great sea views and a lovely child-friendly garden that backs onto the clifftop and leads onto the beach. The menu is varied and service is friendly with nice touches such a bowl of apples that you can help yourself to.

We were disappointed that it is no longer open.

June 2023

as guests of Apple court house the gardens were available for us to browse- however, one day we found out someone had opened the gats and entered the gardens for themselves arguing that they had driven from Devon. Wrong time of year to get the advantage of the beauty but could visualise the attraction

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Barton on Sea
(3 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(5 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all.  For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months.  This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

Lovely cottage has everything you need. Great location - perfect for dog walks and for walking to the village centre and beach. Lazy Lion does a brilliant Sunday Roast. July 2023

We had a great time in the cottage, it's very well equipped. I appreciated the bottle of wine. The woods directly opposite were loved by my dog. And the nature reserve with the river running through just a couple of mins away. We would happily stay again.

June 2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gorsehill Cottage. The location of the cottage is perfect; an easy 10 minute stroll to the nearest beach and similarly a short walk into the centre of Milford (great pubs and restaurants). It’s an ideal base for exploring the beaches at Milford, Highcliffe, Barton and Mudeford and also for drives into the New Forest. The house is lovely, beautifully decorated throughout. Downstairs the modern kitchen is well equipped and the living room very comfortable. Outside, the peaceful garden is well set out with two separate sitting areas to catch the sun at different times of the day. Often when I stay in holiday houses I find myself saying “it would be good if they had a ….” Or “it would have been nice if there were more glasses/knives/whatever”. We didn’t say this once as we really had everything we needed!

March 2023

Gorsehill Cottage is the perfect spot for an escape from daily life! Thoughtfully and tastefully decorated with all of life's essentials it offers a cosy home from home. A 15 min walk down to the sea front makes it the perfect location for a daily beach walk and dip during your stay. You will be spoilt for choice with Milford on Sea's excellent selection of eateries or the cottage has everything you need if you fancy cooking at home. The surrounding area makes it an ideal base to explore the surrounding area with plenty of walking and cycle trails. We will be back!

November 2022

What a wonderful mini break. The house was perfect for a weekend with friends. A fantastic location really close to the beach and the village. We had breakfast in the garden with the sun streaming down. The kitchen is really well equipped and the house feels spacious and comfortable with plenty of parking. A fab weekend in a lovely cottage.
