Holidays in Ashburton mean you have the many attractions and outstanding beauty of Dartmoor and South Devon all at your fingertips.  Sitting conveniently just off the A38 on the southern fringes of the moor, Ashburton dates back to Saxon times and in 1305 became a Dartmoor stannery town dictating tin production in the area.  This rich history is evident in the town’s architecture which is brimming with character and charm – antique shops, book stores, delis, restaurants and gift shops cram together along the pretty high street rubbing shoulders with a lively arts centre, museum and 12th century church.  For families there’s also a fantastic heated outdoor pool and skatepark within walking distance of the town centre.

Once you’ve explored the town there’s masses to do in the surrounding area, Ashburton is known as the ‘Gateway to Dartmoor’ and is the perfect base for walkers, runners, cyclists, canoeists and horse riders eager to get out and enjoy the wild expanses of the moor.  You don’t have to break a sweat to enjoy Dartmoor though, within a few miles of Ashburton there are plenty of beauty spots where you can pull up and have a picnic or let the kids run around.  Spitchwick Common is a popular spot for swimming in the Dart and magnificent Haytor are both just a few miles away.  Other attractions include River Dart Country Park, just outside Ashburton and a brilliant day out for all the family.  Here you can swing from the trees on the high ropes course, catch some air on a mountain bike, try canoeing, zorbing, zip lining and much more all in 90 acres of beautiful countryside alongside the River Dart.

With so much to see and do, holidays in Ashburton have something for everyone and our properties in this thriving market town provide the perfect base to explore the beautiful surrounding area.

Beautiful old pub with lovely garden with sheltered spots and a stream running through. Superb food and friendly staff. Can't fault this pub.

June 2023

We had a takeaway dinner for 3, huge portions and delicious. Would definitely go back.

May 2021

Fantastic food and a lovely atmosphere. Make sure you have the garlic bread - it's to die for!

April 2021

The pub had made ample seating areas available outdoors, some under shelter. We savoured the homemade soup and sandwiched on a blustery, showery, October day. Staff were cheerful, service efficient and the food delicious.

Beautiful pub, just outside Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Wonderful place to relax after a long walk on the Moor!

Lovely setting and grounds. Were disappointed that we could not book any of the on-site activities for our 2 young people, park was quite quiet as well. Seemed as though school trips had taken all available slots. Which seemed unfair to other patrons having paid to go in.

July 2022

Fantastic park with lots of activities for the children. Some you do have to pay extra for but to be honest there is so much there it's not necessarily needed. On a sunny day take swimwear andxwater shoes for the water obstacle course and dampool. Lovely walks, streams, dipping pool and mini mountain bike tracks. Could be seen as a little pricey but as said lots to do and take a packed lunch for a fabulous day out

April 2022

fabulous place for kids and so well managed that adults can enjoy the natural surroundings too. We had a great day here and the entry price let's you go back an extra time within the week. So much fun to be had there - zorbs and high ropes and adventure playgrounds. We loved it.

Malia, the suri llama, is a star & I'd love to spin that gorgeous fleece. Cake good too; highly recommend.

Buckfast Abbey
(3 miles)

(4)

People have been visiting this beautiful wooded valley on the River Dart for nearly 1000 years, drawn to Buckfast in search of God.  However, in 1882 that practice became a community when monks of the community of La Pierre-qui-vire in France relocated to the area to continue their monastic way of life when anti-clerical laws were enacted.  Today it continues to be a spiritual, peaceful and active working monastery, prizing its deep rooted Benedictine spirituality and its rich heritage.  You can visit the abbey for regular services and Mass, or simply browse, explore the gardens, visit the shop and have lunch in the Grange Restaurant.  There are seasonal events, the gardens are free to wander around all year, and there’s parking on site.

Broadsands Beach
(14 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Sitting at the mouth of the River Teign, Teignmouth is a traditional British seaside resort with a wide sandy beach backed by Georgian houses and a Victorian pier with amusement arcades and cafes.  The main beach, known as Town Beach, offers acres of sand to play on and sunbathe and if the mood takes you the safe waters are perfect for taking a dip.  The sheltered estuary is popular with kayakers and paddle boarders, and the award winning clean waters are home to plenty of sealife with dolphins spotted occaisionally offshore.  No dogs 1st May – 30th September.

Elberry Cove
(15 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(15 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(16 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

March 2024

Lovely peace and quiet. 5th visit, will be back again next year.

March 2024

The stay was great , cottage was cosy and warm with plenty of hot water. The freedom to stroll the woodland and river walks on the estate was a real bonus.

January 2024

It was a lovely house and nicely located. Very quiet apart from the main bedroom where you could clearly hear the neighbours through the wall so made sleeping difficult for one of us. We would come back again and hire both houses for an annual walking group we have.

November 2023

The cottage was very comfortable & the location is very special.

May 2023

A very pleasant stay - much needed. I appreciated the prompt response when the heating and hot water went down.

May 2023

Peaceful. Tranquil. Birds singing. Beautiful trees and river. What more can I say really.

March 2023

Heating not working when we arrived, so owners invited us to stay next door in Carriage House which was all good.

January 2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay again. The overall cleanliness was very good except that the window cill in the double bedroom had lots of dead and live midges on arrival. Also a few in the twin bedroom. Any comments are not criticisms but just for your information.

October 2022

What can I say other than this place is very special, beautiful grounds and the most amazing scenic walks around the river and woods surrounding the estate..it was magical, so tranquil, the perfect location to chill out and reset in nature. The cottage is perfect for those cold winter evenings snuggled up by a log fire. The decor suits the character of the place and it’s not too pristine that you’d be worried about relaxing with your dog after a long muddy walk..It has all the amenities you require and the beds are very comfortable, good quality pillows and bed linen. It’s a good location in that there are lots of places to visit between 15-50 mins away in the car so if like us the weather is bad you can get out and about to see other villages and towns. All in all we had a lovely stay and even the rain most days didn’t dampen the experience. I would say on the two days the sun shone it’s even more beautiful so we will come back in the summer to enjoy the area with less rain! Thank you Richard and Harriet for a lovely stay, and the warm welcome, you have a stunning home and it is great you have protected such a special place by keeping it as a dwelling and having the cottages rented so others can experience the estate..Looking forward to coming back to visit again in the future!

October 2022

Its was perfect in every way for us. Just a little piece of heaven, in the most perfect location and we will be back. Thank you to all and one.

July 2022

We had a wonderful stay in such a peaceful, beautiful spot with lovely accommodation. I would definitely consider returning.

July 2022

Stay was lovely. Bedrooms were a little hot at night, so fans would be beneficial.

July 2022

The walk in shower has mildew all around the bottom. The fridge drain hole was blocked with green slime and overflowing under the veg section. This was reported to the owner. Insufficient light over the kitchen sink, needs spotlight so that you can clean things properly. Green armchairs have dirty cushion covers, all needs a wash. Rest of house was clean. Very comfy beds and linen etc.

June 2022

Had a wonderful stay but glad someone helped us with places to go as Wi-Fi didn’t seem to work kept cutting out

March 2022

Yes enjoyed our stay very much

January 2022

Cobwebs near unit in dining room. A beautiful place to stay so quiet which is what we needed and fantastic time log burner. Too muddy to take in grounds and river as rained most days but lovely to come back to lovely warm property.

May 2021

\We had an amazing stay at Groom's Cottage. The location is everything we could have wished for. Would return.

October 2020

December 2019

August 2019

thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend

August 2019

Wonderful, restful stay. Quiet and secluded in lovely surroundings- the wood and river. Property has been tastefully renovated and owner was very friendly.

July 2019

This property is ideally suited for those exploring Devon. We were out surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing during our week in Devon. The weather was absolutely glorious. Our must have though is bringing our dog because she is blind. She loved being able to potter about on the estate and we knew she was safe in such a secluded place. We visit Cornwall or Devon each year and only by chance came across Toad Hall Cottages. Wouldn't consider booking with any other company in future. Exactly the sort of properties we were looking for.

July 2019

a beautiful and relaxing retreat, beautiful house and grounds made extra special by being able to stroll along the river Dart and watch the wildlife.

June 2019

We have been staying in cottages around the country as a family for at least 15 years and this was easily the favourite. Beautiful grounds, just magical, peace and quiet, appreciated the high quality bed linens and towels. Perfect for our dog who swam in the river every day.

May 2019

exellent

April 2019

Lovely location and place to stay.

April 2019

Second time at Holne chase Grooms cottage, lovely place for a peaceful break. Everything perfect. Thanks Harriet for lovely fresh eggs.

January 2019

It was a wonderful holiday in a wonderful location. Couldn’t have been better. While the furnishings were not 5 star the cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The woodburner and supply of wood was great. Thank you for a great holiday. Fantastic that our dogs were so welcome too.

November 2018

We had a fantastic stay, the cottage is so relaxing and secluded yet so much to do in the area. Loved it

October 2018

A very nice welcome from the owner. Our dog was welcomed too. Felt the place was our own until large party moved into adjacent cottage. Walks in the estate’s woodland straight from the door. Yes, we enjoyed our stay very much and hope to visit again soon.
