Enjoyed a pleasant lunch here. Would like to have explored the grounds but weather was poor.

August 2023

Had a fantastic Easter Sunday dinner here. Played giant chess in the garden afterwards. Staff really helpful and meal was lovely!

April 2023

Had two lovely evenings at this venue, beautiful setting and staff very friendly. Meals delicious.

June 2022

We had Sunday lunch here. Nice food but we’re very slow in the day. Waited at least 30mins for our starters, which turned up at the same time to our mains. They took our mains away and when we asked to bring them back and take away the starters they disappeared and we had to chase. I think we’re struggling with staff. The food was very nice though.

July 2021

Lovely setting, staff welcoming and friendly, food was delicious.

June 2021

This was the closest restaurant to our house. We had an evening meal there that was enjoyable but perhaps overpriced. The grounds and bird life made it very attractive.

June 2021

We had a lovely meal here, with the food and service being very good. The mill building is full of character, while the grounds are very relaxing and a great place to sit outside with a drink.

August 2019

Lovely grounds and pleasant staff, food expensive for what is served, I think they are trying to be a gastro pub, which they are not.

July 2019

Beautiful inside and out. Gorgeous huge garden with lake and streams. Inside impeccable, large yet cosy.

Good food in nice atmosphere with amicable innkeeper and staff. Would visit again.

August 2023

We had a really nice meal at the Cali inn. The food is simple but beautifully cooked. I had scampi and chips with salad which was freshly made. My husband had steak and kidney pie which was home cooked and my son had a burger which was good quality meat, nice burger bun and made to his specifications (no green stuff!!!). The chef cooks to order so slots and tables are limited which means booking is essential.

June 2023

Good standard, classic pub grub with some interesting and different options on the specials list also. Friendly and helpful owners and nice selection of gins!

August 2022

Really great food and very reasonable

June 2022

Friendly service, decent pub grub

May 2022

We always love to use this pub when we stay on the Colmer Estate, it's a lovely little pub with amazing service and even better food! Very family friendly aswel!

September 2021

Enjoyable and delicious meal. Very accommodating to our rambunctious toddler!

July 2021

female member of staff very welcoming and friendly, male member abrupt, food okay

June 2021

I think we were out of luck when we visited this pub. They were short-staffed and had hardly any of the 'specials' advertised on the menu: no steak and ale pie, no lasagne. We wondered if they had a chef at all! I ended up having a dry and tasteless burger, and my husband with the 'Thai green curry' which bore no comparison to a proper Thai curry. Nice wine though.

June 2021

This was a very pleasant pub with the benefit of being a short walk from our holiday cottage. The food was excellent, as was the service. Staff were friendly and efficient. We would go again.

September 2020

Nice pub, with friendly staff and good food and nice cold drinks

August 2019

Lovely pub and restaurant, staff are very friendly and atmosphere is chilled. Couldn't rate them more.

September 2017

Wow! what a lovely reasonable priced place to have an evening meal. We stayed at Colmer Estate just down the road so well within walking distance. The food was great quality, smaller portions for adults with small appetite and childrens selection too. As a family of four we always found something to eat and staff very friendly and happy to accommodate and cleaniliness was very good. Overall I would give 5 stars and would recommend to book (day or two before we found ok) as gets busy due to popularity.

Have visited many times over the last few years. The shop is excellent and the cafe serves lovely food. We will return.

June 2023

More style than substance - looks great but hardly any cider, very disappointing as expected to find lots of different varieties. But mainly a shop selling nice blankets and throws with a small cafe. Lovely outdoor space for tea and cake but that’s not why we went there hence the low score.

Wonwell Beach
Wonwell Beach
(7 miles)

(5)

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wonwell is a sandy beach on the east shore of the Erme river which joins Mothecombe at low tide. It affords visitors a large expanse to explore and is accessed via a woodland path from the road which takes about 10 minutes. Alternatively, there is a slipway from the road to the shore of the river and at low tide you can walk along the edge to the beach itself, so make sure you get your timings right to make the most of this one. Parking is limited at Wonwell Beach so keep that in mind when you’re heading over. Road parking allows for around 20 cars depending on their size and there aren’t really any facilities around, although there are toilets nearby. This does mean you need to be prepared if you’re heading there for the best part of the day, but also makes for a very peaceful experience whether it’s lounging about on the sand with a picnic in the summer, or a stroll in the cooler months, simply taking in the atmosphere. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round so it’s the perfect place to take them for a run around. Something to be careful of – do keep an eye on the tide to avoid getting cut off when it comes in and getting very wet en route back to dry land!

May 2022

Amazing spot, so peaceful. Parking the only issue.

June 2021

Nice beach and great walks that lead to it, very few people around in August! Limited parking so you are better off walking there.

August 2019

Glorious beach at the mouth of the Erme. Narrow lanes and very limited parking. No toilets, cafes etc - wonderful! Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.

Ayrmer Cove
Ayrmer Cove
(8 miles)

(20)

Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!

September 2019

A beautiful little cove and fun for dogs and children.

August 2019

You can walk to this secluded cove from the cottage. Probably about 20 mins away, depending on your pace. Plenty of blackberries to eat/collect on route when in season! No facilities at the cove but beautifully unspoilt.

August 2019

Really beautiful secluded beach - great for the dog too!

July 2019

A lovely beach at the end of a beautiful valley. Absolutely perfect for dogs and never busy.

June 2019

Parked in the NT car park at Ringmore and took the 15 min walk down to the beach. Saw a beautiful sunset and had the place to ourselves. Bliss

November 2018

What a fantastic place. So quiet - we had the whole beach to ourselves a lot of the time. Our dogs loved it.

September 2018

A lovely quiet cove, with excellent rock pools at low tide. No sand but the kids enjoy it as an alternative to the massive sandy beaches at Bigbury and Bantham.

September 2018

stunning little beach, very quiet and great for snorkelling

July 2018

Beautiful cove. Very quiet with lots of bird life.

June 2018

Well worth the walk with beautiful views of Burgh island from the coast path. We were the only ones there on a very sunny day in April. Perfect.

April 2018

Simply stunning and well worth the steep (ish) walk down from the National Trust car park at Ringmore. When there - it's hard to imagine the horrors of today's modern world.

Mothecombe Beach
(8 miles)

(3)

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.

Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

September 2023

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

May 2021

Lovely beach but cafe was being renovated and we were gasping for a cuppa

April 2017

Challaborough Bay
Challaborough Bay
(8 miles)

(6)

Close to Kingsbridge, Challaborough Bay is a sandy beach in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s perfect for enjoying all the seaside activities nature can afford. At low tide the beach is ideal for visiting families to build sandcastles and explore the rock pools, while the swells and shore breaks also attract surfers and bodyboarders. There are some beautiful walks along the coast path that surrounds it, heading towards Bigbury on Sea in particular. Making it an ideal spot to spend the day, the beach has toilets, a café and a beach shop close by, although access is via steps and small paths so accessibility isn’t wheelchair friendly. There is a car park but it’s rather small, so it’s good to know that a 15-minute walk to Bigbury will see ample parking available – seasonal charges apply so remember to bring cash with you. While four legged friends are welcome in the winter, they are not allowed on the beach between May and September, so do plan their walks with that in mind. It’s a lovely spot along the coast path to bring them to, you can even beach hop from one to the next!

Cempletely different atmosphere to the rest of the South Hams. Part of a beautiful coastline set amidst class South Hams countryside.

June 2023

Good if you’re staying all day with children but expensive to park, only whole day parking not good if you don’t want to stay a long tome

April 2022

I didn't like it here. I found it a bit tacky. Also on my walk I popped into the Cafe in the morning but had missed their breakfast time which ended at 11.30 and I was there at 11.34 so they refused to serve me toast with coffee! So I walked out! A guy behind me in the queue was left open mouthed and said if I go on to Bigbury I'll get it anytime I want!

September 2021

Beautiful place to watch the sunset. Good fish and chips on the beach in the evening. Wouldn’t spend the day there as holiday park attached and the beach was left absolutely covered in rubbish by the guests ????

September 2019

Lovely, & just a short walk from Bigbury on Sea car park. It also has a fantastic chip shop that does gluten free fish & chips!

August 2019

Lovely beach

April 2017

Bantham Beach
Bantham Beach
(8 miles)

(15)

At the mouth of the Avon River, Bantham beach is easy to reach from Salcombe, Kingsbridge and our other favourite holiday home locations, as well as being a beautiful area to stay in its own right. The beach looks out over Bigbury Bay and offers a wonderful view of Burgh Island, which is famous for its art deco hotel of the same name that has hosted Agatha Christie and Noel Coward amongst its illustrious guests an can reach by sea tractor. Bantham beach has a popular reputation amongst both novice and advanced surfers, and as such there are lessons available from the Bantham Surfing Academy, which operates from the beach. They also offer other water sports including paddle boarding, and a day pottering up the Avon River on one of those when the tide is right, is a day well spent. When the tide is out at Bantham the sandy beach reveals rock pools and great swathes of space so you can happily set up a picnic and stay there for the whole day. If the mood strikes, why not walk along the coast path towards Thurlestone around the corner, and South Milton Sands beyond that, particularly as it’s also a popular beach for dog owners? Just keep in mind that from 1st May until 30th September restrictions apply, so look out for signposts with more information. If you’re spending the whole day on the beach it’s worth popping to the Gastrobus which is open seasonally in the car park, offering everything from freshly made baps to coffees, teas and cakes, or for a larger meal head the short walking distance to The Sloop Inn gastropub. There is plenty of parking available by Bantham, with charges from £3.50 per day, so make sure you have change on you as it’s a bit tricky to find parking otherwise. There are toilets in the car park, and from May to October from 10am until 6pm there is also lifeguard cover on the beach. All in, Bantham has something to offer everyone throughout the year and is one of many beautiful locations to spend time while you’re in South Devon.

June 2023

Worth the £4.50 to park for the afternoon plenty of walking and rock pools to explore, a good wide sandy beach for people with children

April 2022

Great beach particularly at low tide

October 2021

The most extaordinary place and great for kids. Lots to see and do - great sand and very shallow waters so very safe. if you get a chance to go on the water tractor that is great.. and do visit the Pub on the island. Great day out.

August 2021

A lovely beach. £6.50 to park for the day - it's a private estate - but a shame that the owners aren't prepared to put some of the money towards improvements to the toilets - one small sink in each of the men's & women's toilets with a malfunctioning tap is not enough for a beach full of people, children & dogs!

August 2019

Lovely beach for gentle surfing with ice creams, coffee, snacks and pizzas close to the car park.

July 2019

Glorious especially at low tide.

April 2019

July 2017

A short walk (less than a mile) from Thurlestone, this is a stunning beach. Lots of shallow water with sand underfoot, truly amazing.

Fantastic sandy beach and so big. My dog loved running around and jumping into the water. Plenty of space for all.

March 2024

Yes very much so, especilaly the exclusive use of the pool! I was brought up in the South Hams area so know it well. The property is quite isolated for anyone who doesnt know the locality but this was not a concern for us.

September 2023

There was a few cobwebs behind dresser in kitchen and under the beds but nothing major that would make us mark it down. Overall it was amazing and we'll be looking at booking again at Lower Well or even bring family back to the bigger cottage.

April 2023

We love it in this cottage! We have stayed every year for around 8 years, usually at October half term, but this year we have also stayed at Easter too. We love the the upgrades to the cottage and of course the pool is an absolute hit with our children. We are already booked for October. Thank you!

March 2023

Unexpected bonus was that the other property Well Farm was empty during our week so we had the use of the pool exclusively. Pool was absolutely excellent!

October 2022

Another brilliant half term holiday for us. We have been coming for this week for the past 8 years and walking into the amazing renovation of the cottage when we arrived was a shock! What a wonderful change it is, we cannot believe the difference! As always the boys have loved the pool and we have spent lots of time relaxing. We have already booked next year and look forward to it already.

October 2022

We have enjoyed a fabulous week staying at Lower Well Cottage. The recent modifications to the building are stunning! Being able to breakfast in the lovely kitchen (serious kitchen envy!) and then walk in the landscape has been a real treat, topped off by a swim in the pool. Thank you!!

July 2022

We had a lovely stay at the cottage. We had everything we needed and are hoping to come back one day.

June 2022

Fantastic stay, enjoyed by all. Very quiet, great pool, excellent standard of decor, all mod cons. For beaches we recommend Blackpool Sands and Bigbury on Sea.

An absolutely beautiful cottage in a superb location, with amazing walks on the moors and along rivers on the doorstep. We thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility, the gardens were lovely and the heated pool a real treat. I cooked every night and the kitchen was really well equipped.

August 2021

We had a great family holiday. The pool was amazing and we loved the garden and views. The location for beaches and Dartmoor was excellent. We loved lunch at the Rugglestone Inn, the Dartmouth steam train and river cruise and Bigsbury beach. We would love to book again once the refurb is completed.

July 2021

It’s a lovely location. We did enjoy the pool and the space of the cottage.

June 2021

Having said all of the above, we did have a lovely week, despite the weather and the property was clean and well catered for. (Although some dvd's would have been great - as the TV signal was very poor and we couldn't watch it. We bought some dvd's in a local charity shop).

October 2020

Great support even from local house crew who diligently turned up to arrange the lock problem. Owners seem very conscientious of looking after the place and I was delighted by the holiday.

October 2020

The cottage was cosy, comfortable and very inviting. We loved the attention to detail shown by the owners and we thoroughly enjoyed the use of the indoor, heated swimming pool. It was an idyllic cottage and we have booked for next year already.

September 2020

We had the most heavenly week at this stunning property. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived, the kitchen was the best equipped we’ve ever come across, the beds and sofas were comfy, the showers were powerful and the pool was simply wonderful! It was heated to the perfect temperature for us and our toddler, it was beautifully clean and a really great size. The location couldn’t have been better for us; all of our favourite places were within easy reach and the property itself was really easy to find when we first arrived. We never stay at the same property twice but we are looking to re-book here already! If Carlsberg did holiday cottages... ????

September 2020

We had a wonderful time and of course the weather really helped. The property has stunning views of Dartmoor and is near stunning beaches/ coastline which are all listed in the information book at the property. The swimming pool was amazing too. Hoping to go back some time, maybe next year.

August 2020

This is a charming fairly basic cottage, there’s everything you need. The house was generally quite Dirty, I don’t think the windows have been cleaned in a very long time, there are a lot of dusty old cobwebs, grit in the cupboards which is a bit strange. Just cosmetic, people have different standards, I know ours are fairly high. The kitchen was unacceptably dirty when we arrived, there was food in the cutlery drawer and utensils, glassware, crockery put away dirty. The lecreuset was coated in grease and food. There were toast crumbs and jam on the toast rack and tea in the teapot, crumbs in the cupboard. I have plenty of pictures. P Given the current pandemic and the need to arrive late and leave early this was particularly galling. We had no confidence that the hard surfaces, light switches, door handles etc. on which coronavirus can live for est. 72 hours, had been cleaned. I did quite a lot of cleaning. I did also contact the cleaning company and suggested they put the glassware, crockery, cutlery through the dishwasher and maybe have a look in a few other places. They came, hand washed a few bits of crockery we had left out with food on them, and left. No note or acknowledgement that this wasn’t acceptable, no apology. These people need training in hygiene. Dangerous. Toad Hall Cottages were very supportive. Other than that, the pool is lovely, there’s a nice bit of garden to sit in, the nearby village is an easy cycle and the pubs serve good food. The bathrooms are nice. There’s a good washer and dryer and room for bikes in the utility. There is no soundproofing at all between the upstairs and downstairs bedrooms, my daughter could hear us turning over in bed. The curtains are thin which is a bit of an issue in the downstairs bedroom but not upstairs because that bedroom is fairly dark. There’s quite a lot of road noise periodically from the nearby A road so if you were after deep peace you’d go somewhere else.

Thank you so much for your valued feedback which we have passed on to the Housekeeping team. With regard to the cleanliness issues it certainly sounds as if some areas were missed which is disappointing and we will bring your comments to the attention of the cleaner and the owner to ensure that in future a thorough clean is carried out. We very much want all guests to have a relaxing and comfortable holiday and we will be monitoring standards closely at Lower Well Cottage going forwards. We are pleased to note that otherwise you enjoyed your holiday in the cottage and enjoyed the pool and the surroundings. We hope to welcome you back to Toad Hall in the future for another holiday. From the Toad Hall Team,

Amazing place amazing pool amazing holiday. We are coming back next year

November 2019

We had a fantastic time and the use of the swimming pool really made it a top notch holiday for our family.

September 2019

Swimming pool was especially appreciated. A brilliant facility

September 2019

We picked this cottage because of its location. We were not disappointed. The instruction file was well organised and helpful. The markings on the microwave were difficult to read.

October 2018

Lovely cottage with swimming pool a great asset, good size and temperature. Quiet location ideally situated for great walks on moors or coast.

September 2018

Very enjoyable. At our advanced ages going upstairs to the lounge was an effort but well worth it when we got there as it is a spacious room with lovely views from 2 aspects. Sadly we were unable to use the magnificent swimming pool for health reasons. Very well appointed kitchen with quality appliances. The bed was comfortable and an excellent shower room. A most enjoyable stay and convenient for many places to visit.

September 2018

We arrived at cottage at 1.30pm (we knew we couldn’t have the cottage until 3pm just wanted to see where it was). No cleaner had been at this time Couldn’t see how the cottage could have a really good clean in the time between 1.30 and 3.00. Found dog hairs on downstairs bathroom floor.

Many thanks indeed for your feedback. Teams of cleaners are tasked with working together to turn a property around during the changeover window, throughout the South Hams - in this case 3 housekeepers were in attendance which will have provided sufficient man-hours to prepare the cottage. We apologise that you found some dog hairs on the the bathroom floor, the cleaners obviously do their utmost to remove all trace but as a dog-friendly property, a few have escaped them, for which we apologise. We are delighted to note that despite this you enjoyed your holiday and found the property to be excellent. From the Toad Hall Team.

August 2018

We had a great week in Devon, thank you. Whilst the property is dog friendly, the garden is not fully enclosed, meaning that dogs can go exploring, potentially down to the main road (whilst there is a gate, there is nothing to stop the dog getting out by going around the back of the property and out the other side). Would also have been great if the garden was mowed prior to arrival. Field great but as quite overgrown, it meant v wet feet every time we ventured beyond the garden!

July 2018

A really lovely cottage in a beautiful spot. The pool was excellent a really good size. The adjacent field is great for dogs. The cottage is ideal for exploring the area from beaches to Dartmoor. Great stay.

June 2018

The garden furniture had not been cleaned for some time and was covered in bird droppings.

Thank you for your feedback, so pleased that you found other features of the cottage to be excellent, (especially the pool, it's fab isnt it!) and thank you for letting us know about the garden furniture, our apologies that this was overlooked, the housekeeper will see that this is cleaned regularly. We hope to welcome you back again soon! From the Toad Hall Team

April 2018

Great location. Every facility needed was there. Lovely standard of accommodation and bonus of swimming pool. Good to have field to walk dog in. Excellent stay.

February 2018

A hidden gem. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lower Well Cottage which was warm and welcoming on a cold and wet week in February and use of the superb indoor swimming pool was an added bonus. We would have no hesitation to book this property again if we decide to return to the area.

January 2018

We have really enjoyed out stay in this charming, cosy cottage. Swimming every day has been really god for us too. The field is great for the dog to have a good leg stretch and to chase a few pheasants! Thank you and I am sure we will return!

October 2017

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in everyway !
