This vibrant town is a hive of activity and is readily accessible to wonderful beaches at Wonwell, Mothecombe and Bigbury, plus only half an hour from Dartmoor and the historic city of Plymouth. Description
Situated on the outskirts of the charming town of Modbury, Old Traine Cottage makes up part of the 14th Century former tithe barn for Modbury Church with the adjacent Old Traine Barn, both of which have been converted to excellent standards. With its dignified terraced houses and enticing array of independent shop windows and various eateries and excellent pubs, Modbury has timeless character. This vibrant town is a hive of activity and is readily accessible to wonderful beaches at Wonwell, Mothecombe and Bigbury, plus only half an hour from Dartmoor and the historic city of Plymouth. The cottage is located at the end of a quiet unmade road.
Steps lead up to the front door.
The entrance opens directly into the beautiful Master bedroom area to make most of the space here, with beamed ceiling and heaps of light.
Bedroom 1 with 5ft King size bed, wardrobe.

Bedroom 2 with Twin 3ft single beds, chest of drawers and hanging hooks with parcel shelf.
Shower room with walk-in with shower cubicle, basin, radiator and WC.
Under the stairs there is a hanging area for coats and boots.
Stairs lead to the first floor open plan living area. High beamed ceilings with an attractive lounge area, corner sofa and woodburning stove, wall mounted smart TV. Built in stair gates at top of the stairs keep children and animals safe.
Kitchen area with microwave, dishwasher, undercounter fridge with freezer compartment, electric oven and gas hob. Dining table to seat four.
From the lounge, steps lead up to french doors which lead directly out to the patio area and garden beyond.
Fully enclosed garden overlooking a farm lane and fields beyond, with stock fencing, with lawn and patio area. A gate leads from here to the parking area so ideal for sandy dogs and children to dry off outside after a day at the beach.

The Avon Valley is a beautiful, unspoilt, rural haven and Modbury is in the heart of this rich farming region. With its dignified terraced houses, slate hung walls and enticing old-fashioned shop windows it creates an impression of going back in time. However, do not be deceived by this timeless character, this little town is a hive of activity with three inns and an array of excellent specialist shops and cafés.

More style than substance - looks great but hardly any cider, very disappointing as expected to find lots of different varieties. But mainly a shop selling nice blankets and throws with a small cafe. Lovely outdoor space for tea and cake but that’s not why we went there hence the low score.

A friendly cliff top golf course close to Kingsbridge, Bigbury Golf Club is a links course with spectacular views of the South Devon coast. It is an 18-hole course where you can play as an individual or as part of a group. It’s 6,035 yards for men, 5,544 for ladies and par is 70 and 73 respectively. There’s a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar, but remember that dress should be smart/casual at all times, and in the clubhouse they ask that you don’t wear golf shoes, hats, untailored shorts, general beach wear, collarless tee shirts and non-golf sportswear like tracksuits and rugby shirts. The club offers rates for groups of 6-14 and society golf days for numbers over 14. Green fees are seasonal and depend on the time of day that you’re visiting so keep an eye on the website for full details.

Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.

Ayrmer Cove

Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.
Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

Challaborough Bay

Close to Kingsbridge, Challaborough Bay is a sandy beach in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s perfect for enjoying all the seaside activities nature can afford. At low tide the beach is ideal for visiting families to build sandcastles and explore the rock pools, while the swells and shore breaks also attract surfers and bodyboarders. There are some beautiful walks along the coast path that surrounds it, heading towards Bigbury on Sea in particular. Making it an ideal spot to spend the day, the beach has toilets, a café and a beach shop close by, although access is via steps and small paths so accessibility isn’t wheelchair friendly. There is a car park but it’s rather small, so it’s good to know that a 15-minute walk to Bigbury will see ample parking available – seasonal charges apply so remember to bring cash with you. While four legged friends are welcome in the winter, they are not allowed on the beach between May and September, so do plan their walks with that in mind. It’s a lovely spot along the coast path to bring them to, you can even beach hop from one to the next!

I didn't like it here. I found it a bit tacky. Also on my walk I popped into the Cafe in the morning but had missed their breakfast time which ended at 11.30 and I was there at 11.34 so they refused to serve me toast with coffee! So I walked out! A guy behind me in the queue was left open mouthed and said if I go on to Bigbury I'll get it anytime I want!

The cottage enjoys the quietness of the countryside but the pretty village of Modbury is easily accessible on foot, with good amenities. The cottage is very comfortable and has a good sized secure garden if you are taking a four legged friend along with you. The location of it enables you to easily visit many parts of Devon.

The cottage was a lovely base with good views from the garden. Comfy sofas, bed and the power of the shower was suburb. Almost everything was available in the property. The last two years we have stayed in cottages we received wine and a cream tea on our arrival. A very nice touch! The village is very interesting and the food at the White Hart was great.

Location - PERFECT! It was quiet however, we had several bars/restaurants on the High St if we wanted to go out. Acceptable distance from supermarkets / beaches etc. Furnishings and Equipment - Excellent! Couldn't believe how well equipped the kitchen was! It had everything i needed even for preparing a Christmas feast! Christmas trees and a welcome gift were such a lovely touch. Appliances for cleaning up (hoover / mop etc) were all in great condition. Cleanliness - Superb! Also, having lots of cleaning materials for us to tidy as we went was also great.....especially as we had the dog. cleaning up was easy. Having the back entrance onto the secure garden was fab....it was so easy to keep the dog happy.

Old Traine Cottage is in a beautiful location up a quiet, no through, country lane. Modbury is a pretty village with everything you need as a base and very friendly locals. Lots of lanes to explore with the dog, small playgrounds for the children. Within easy reach of lovely beaches at Bigbury-on-Sea, Thurleston Sands, Hope Cove and also the bigger city of Plymouth (excellent Aquarium). The cottage enjoys the quietness of the countryside but the pretty village of Modbury is easily accessible on foot, with good amenities. The cottage is very comfortable and has a good sized secure garden if you are taking a four legged friend along with you. The location of it enables you to easily visit many parts of Devon.

The cottage was a lovely base with good views from the garden. Comfy sofas, bed and the power of the shower was suburb. Almost everything was available in the property. The last two years we have stayed in cottages we received wine and a cream tea on our arrival. A very nice touch! The village is very interesting and the food at the White Hart was great.

Very much enjoyed our stay, a lovely peaceful location but close to shops and pubs. Fridge not very user friendly - when it is time to renew then a model with better layout could be chosen. Some weighing scales would have been useful.

Location - PERFECT! It was quiet however, we had several bars/restaurants on the High St if we wanted to go out. Acceptable distance from supermarkets / beaches etc. Furnishings and Equipment - Excellent! Couldn't believe how well equipped the kitchen was! It had everything i needed even for preparing a Christmas feast! Christmas trees and a welcome gift were such a lovely touch. Appliances for cleaning up (hoover / mop etc) were all in great condition. Cleanliness - Superb! Also, having lots of cleaning materials for us to tidy as we went was also great.....especially as we had the dog. cleaning up was easy. Having the back entrance onto the secure garden was fab....it was so easy to keep the dog happy.

Old Traine Cottage is in a beautiful location up a quiet, no through, country lane. Modbury is a pretty village with everything you need as a base and very friendly locals. Lots of lanes to explore with the dog, small playgrounds for the children. Within easy reach of lovely beaches at Bigbury-on-Sea, Thurleston Sands, Hope Cove and also the bigger city of Plymouth (excellent Aquarium). This is the second time we have stayed at the cottage with our young children and dog and we have thoroughly enjoyed our vacations there.

A friendly cliff top golf course close to Kingsbridge, Bigbury Golf Club is a links course with spectacular views of the South Devon coast. It is an 18-hole course where you can play as an individual or as part of a group. It’s 6,035 yards for men, 5,544 for ladies and par is 70 and 73 respectively. There’s a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar, but remember that dress should be smart/casual at all times, and in the clubhouse they ask that you don’t wear golf shoes, hats, untailored shorts, general beach wear, collarless tee shirts and non-golf sportswear like tracksuits and rugby shirts. The club offers rates for groups of 6-14 and society golf days for numbers over 14. Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.

Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.
Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

Challaborough Bay

Close to Kingsbridge, Challaborough Bay is a sandy beach in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s perfect for enjoying all the seaside activities nature can afford. At low tide the beach is ideal for visiting families to build sandcastles and explore the rock pools, while the swells and shore breaks also attract surfers and bodyboarders. There are some beautiful walks along the coast path that surrounds it, heading towards Bigbury on Sea in particular. Making it an ideal spot to spend the day, the beach has toilets, a café and a beach shop close by, although access is via steps and small paths so accessibility isn’t wheelchair friendly. There is a car park but it’s rather small, so it’s good to know that a 15-minute walk to Bigbury will see ample parking available – seasonal charges apply so remember to bring cash with you. While four legged friends are welcome in the winter, they are not allowed on the beach between May and September, so do plan their walks with that in mind. It’s a lovely spot along the coast path to bring them to, you can even beach hop from one to the next!

I didn't like it here. I found it a bit tacky. Also on my walk I popped into the Cafe in the morning but had missed their breakfast time which ended at 11.30 and I was there at 11.34 so they refused to serve me toast with coffee! So I walked out! A guy behind me in the queue was left open mouthed and said if I go on to Bigbury I'll get it anytime I want!
