The traditional fishing village of Polperro, set along the dramatic South Cornish coastline between Looe and Fowey, is steeped in maritime history. Wandering its pretty, narrow, winding streets offers a nostalgic taste of times gone by.

For centuries local families here were reliant on “Polperro pilchards” which were sold right across Europe. Nowadays, there is still an active fishing fleet but their catch is more varied. You can sample their wares in a number of local restaurants, pubs and cafes, or simply sit back and watch the fishermen at work in the harbour as you tuck into a fresh crab sandwich.

Polperro has an abundance of small, twisting lanes, most of which are simply not wide enough for modern vehicles. Some are little wider than footpaths, so leave your car in the main car park at Crumplehorn and from here you can walk, catch the bus or even take a horse and cart the half mile down into the village. The traffic-free zones allow you to explore the winding alleys of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages at your leisure.

It’s easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of people with loaded horse & carts rumbling past during Polperro’s smuggling heyday, or the scores of  ladies lining the streets nimbly knitting fishermen’s jumpers, known locally as “knit-frocks”. On the harbour-side you can visit the Polperro Heritage Museum of Fishing and Smuggling to immerse yourself more fully in Polperro’s rich history.

The village and harbour are best seen at high tide, but at low tide, a small beach appears so it’s possible to go for a paddle. The picturesque South West Coast Path runs right through the Polperro. If you walk east along the coast you’ll reach the beautiful Talland Bay, or alternatively hop in your car to visit other nearby sandy beaches including Seaton, Downderry, Lansallos and Lantic Bay. Regular boat trips run from the harbour offering fantastic views of the coastline and day trips to nearby Looe, and you might even spot dolphins and seals on your way!

A holiday cottage in Polperro offers a wonderfully traditional seaside escape on the dramatic South East Cornish coast.

Parking for three cars within the property behind the five bar gate.
This gate must be shut at all times, as farm animals frequent the lane daily.

  • Included: Bed linen, towels (no beach towels so please bring your own), electricity, oil central heating and unlimited WiFi. high chair, stair gates, and travel cot.

Eden Project 14 miles.
  • A net of logs and firelighters are provided for the first night.

October 2021

Great location at the top of Polperro, very friendly staff, great beers and food. Great place to soak up the afternoon sunshine with a pint or three. Does get busy outside on a nice day but has 2 outside bars so your never kept waiting long! Their prawn sandwich was one of the best things i ate on the whole holiday!

September 2021

We love it here. Happy, bustling vibe outside with a well stocked outside bar and excellent service. Good choice of menu and delicious food. My only negative is that the promise of live music sometimes seems to be a false one as on two separate occasions now, we have turned up early when live music has been scheduled and it hasn’t materialised. Weather conditions were good and no explanations were offered.

September 2021

Disappointing. The pub does not live up ti it’s provenance. Helpful staff but boring food.

The Ship has changed beyond recognition over the past 6 years of is visiting Polperro. Ben and Jess have turned the Inn into a warm, welcoming pub with great food that pleases a meat eater and a very fussy vegetarian. The selection of both types of food is the largest on the village. These guys are really giving the other places a run for their money! Brilliant gin selection too.

A secret and rather surprising home to fine dining in Polperro. We had a fabulous meal there - excellent ingredients expertly cooked and presented. The menu was adventurous and innovative without being silly. Wine prices were notably reasonable and the choice very good. Unlike so many fine dining rooms this one does not fleece you when it comes to the wine list. Highly recommended!

Polperro Model Village
(3 miles)

(8)

An utterly charming day out for the family, Polperro Model Village and Land of Legend is two attractions in one.  The village is, quite literally, the coastal town in miniature and has been around for more than 60 years, surviving both fire and floods – so don’t underestimate the strength of these little guys.  Meanwhile, Land of Legend is your chance to explore Cornish folklore, derived from tales of pirates and smugglers who thrived in and around Cornwall from the early modern period through to the 19th century.  It is a unique show of lights, sound and animation.  The site also houses a model railway, and prices are £3 for adults and £2 for children, open daily from Easter to October.

Disappointed not open

July 2020

Good attraction for young children rather than older children and adults. The miniature village and Land of Legend are charming (though perhaps a little 'worn' by modern standards). There is an interesting audio/visual on the Polperro floods of 1976 and 1993 and a separate small model railway.

Polperro Museum
(3 miles)

In The Warren overlooking the harbour, the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing houses a collection of exhibits and 19th century photographs that date back to a time when both smuggling and fishing thrived in Polperro.  It brings to life the little village’s beautiful history and the lives of the people who lived there, having depended on fishing for generations and been home to no less than three factories close by at one point.  A delightful opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about local history in this little Cornish village, entry is £1.75 for adults and 50p for children.

July 2019

I love a bit of local history and if your like minded, you'll enjoy this place. lots of information on the local boats and fishermen. it would take you a while to read it all.

August 2018

Well worth visiting to get a feel and understanding of how the once thriving community of Polperro used to be in former pilchard fishing (and smuggling) days. The old photos and exhibits transport you back to a very different world (though adults will undoubtedly find the museum more interesting than small children).

May 2018

This museum is packed with interesting facts and some great photos, so even though small we spent a good hour there. Definitely worth a visit to learn more on the local history (including about the more recent floods and storms), fishy facts and smuggling tales!

Polperro Beach
(3 miles)

(22)

In South East Cornwall, Polperro is widely thought to be one of the area’s most picturesque fishing villages.  Brimming with whitewashed cottages all the way down the harbour, the beach sits in a sheltered position under the cliffs, only visible at low tide and close to the harbour.  Unsurprisingly, it’s a popular destination and can get busy in the summer months.  Dogs are not permitted at the beach during peak season, from Easter to October, and while parking in the village itself is all but impossible, but there’s a large car park about a mile up the valley with a regular shuttle service going up and down the hill.

July 2023

beautiful little cove -- just watch the tide times ..........

August 2022

We didn't really use the beach but I did see someone allow their dog to foul on the beach and, although they cleared it up to a certain extent, I don't think this is really acceptable when children are going to be playing in the sand.

June 2022

June 2022

September 2021

July 2021

Great beach.

June 2021

Polperro a beautiful place , a lovely fishing village

May 2021

The most beautiful little cove featuring caves to explore and the 'net loft' out on the rugged rocks. The sea is a divine colour and I can't wait to come back and swim at a warmer time of year! I enjoyed two mornings in the sun and the peace of being out there first thing exploring this little beach area, it was a great start to those days!

May 2021

This Is a glorious, quaint fishing village with narrow winding alleys and a beautiful little harbour. It is more suited to couples rather than families as there are not many facilities for children, other than a small beach at low tide.

September 2020

Perfect . Love love love

August 2020

The children enjoyed exploring the caves and beachcombing when the tide was out, too many dogs off the lead but it was out of season. Main reason for leaving the review is to strongly recommend you take the two hour fishing trip with either Chris or Olly Puckey on the Smuggler. We had the boat to ourselves and had an excellent value for money trip which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Caught 3 mackerel and a pollock which we took back to the cottage and cooked for tea. A delight! Oh, and we went for brunch afterwards at House on the Props - definitely recommended, I've never had a full English on a baguette before, it was awesome!

October 2019

Our favourite place to visit with wonderful little shops, restaurants and art galleries to browse in on the walk down to the quay. Amazing views as you leave the village and head on the coastal cliff path back towards Looe. We took our dog and he enjoyed exploring the numerous rock pools on the beach. We also explored the right hand coastal path and stumbled across a secluded pool amongst the rocks - steep ascent but well worth the hike! People were bathing in the pool as it was a real sun trap..

August 2019

Small but lovely

May 2019

Beautiful beach if you love beach combing.

April 2019

Easy access, dog ok

October 2018

We visited Polperro harbour/beach with our springer spaniel and although the write-up says no dogs allowed, they are allowed, just on a lead between 10am and 6pm, although beach is small, the sea is safe to swim in and not full of huge rocks, lovely ????

August 2018

Lovely clean small beach.

May 2018

Polperro is a magic place. It is so pretty with its winding streets and old cottages and the harbour with its fishing boats. The residents are so friendly and welcoming and there’s a wide choice of restaurants and cafes. I particularly recommend Michelle’s for fantastic food and a real welcome. As a woman on my own I dined there, as elsewhere, with no feeling of awkwardness. Breakfast at the House on the Props just unbeatable! Spring is one of the best times to visit for the wonderful coastal walks and the masses of wild flowers. When you visit, think about the parking situation before you go as it needs organising, but many rentable cottages have spaces provided in the main car park and PauI who runs a little motorised transport system for luggage is very helpful and reliable. I am one of the thousands of people who just love Polperro and every time I visit feel a great reluctance to leave.

May 2018

Enjoyed the harbour etc and all the shops but had dogs so did not visit the beach but a beautiful setting.

June 2017

really lovely, a must visit desination.

Lantivet Bay
(3 miles)

(1)

Between Polruan and Polperro along the coastal path, Lantivet Bay is only accessible at low tide when a sand and pebble beach is revealed.  Parking is in the National Trust car park at Polruan, where there are toilets as well, but there aren’t any facilities closer to the beach itself.  Dogs are allowed all year round, which is lovely as it’s the perfect beach to incorporate into a walk.  The National Trust recommends a charming circular route, starting in the car park and taking in 2.4 miles of beautiful bays and surrounding landscape, and giving you the chance to explore the area with its rich smuggling heritage.

Talland Bay
(3 miles)

(16)

A small, quiet beach between Looe and Polperro, Talland Bay actually comprises two beaches, one of which has sand both at low and high tide and is good for swimming all the time, while the other is less sandy and is easiest to swim from at high tide.  There is a ramp for launching boats from the main beach and there are lots of small coves and tidal pools to swim in as well, so it’s a delightful area to explore in the water.  Parking is limited, but there is a small, free car park by the beach and paid parking at The Beach Café, all of which provide easy access to the sand.  Thanks to the nearby café, visitors can also benefit from the accompanying facilities, on-site shop, and tuck into Roskillys Cornish Ice-Cream as well.

Sit in the graveyard on the bill and look down to Talland bay. Tranquillity so special. I never fail to go there when I am down. The church is beautiful so much history.

October 2023

Having spent many a happy childhood holiday here - 60 years ago, so wonderful to return. It is so beautiful and with addition of 2 Beach cafes - even better now.

June 2023

Beautiful little bay with a great cafe overlooking it. Dogs allowed on the beach Oct to end of May.....

October 2021

Although there was indeed sand in one of the bays it was largely covered with seaweed at the water's edge when we were there. All very natural.

October 2021

Lovely bay, shingle beach

September 2021

Not a great beach and a bit smelly.

August 2021

Unfortunately the seaweed on the beach made it very smelly and also lots of flies. Beautiful apart from that!

June 2021

Lovely walk from polperro along coast. Cafe in picturesque bay pretty with little huts to shelter. Only downside was the coffee not good at all.

May 2021

Beautiful bay. A little smelly from the seaweed but rock pools galore and quiet

October 2020

Very interesting beach with rock pools at low tide and fascinating multi-coloured rocks, great for photography.

October 2019

A lovely place to walk too on the way to Looe. Hard work back up the hill to polperro, bit it's worth it!

October 2018

The coastal walk from Polperro to Talland Bay is outstanding. As both are scenic, (and Talland Bay benefits from an excellent cafe and free toilets), it makes for an excellent morning or afternoon trip in good weather.

May 2018

Lovely beach, beautiful walk from Polperro. Dogs requested to be kept on leads (which I suppose is preferable to a ban!). Families seem to use this beach alot.

May 2018

An interesting beach at low tide and lovely views.

April 2018

Brilliant. Bit seaweedy. Wear beach shoes incase of weever fish stings.

August 2017

Great beach pet friendly beach with rock pools etc for the dogs to explore

Polruan Back Beach
(4 miles)

In the heart of Polruan, Back Beach is not short of facilities and nearby shops and restaurants.  A pretty little beach that’s popular with families, it has beautiful views across the river to Fowey and is a lovely place to watch the world go by with all the boats pottering along in front of you.  It’s predominantly a sand beach, leading to a sheltered section of the river, so it’s good for swimming, but there aren’t any lifeguards around.  The only complication for access is that it’s very difficult to park in the village, and it’s a considerable walk down the steep hill from the car park at St Saviours, or a ferry ride across the river from Fowey.  Therefore, it’s best to combine a visit with a day exploring the village itself to make the most of it.

A fabulous property for a family gathering. Thank you for the Easter treats left for our arrival.

April 2024

What a wonderful time we have had in this house - the most perfect of properties! So well equipped and super cosy yet spacious at the same time. We've loved watching the woodpecker visit the bird feeder several times! We've walked coastal paths in the rain, been to Fowey which was beautiful, and enjoyed playing games around the lovely dining table. We will most definitely return, thank you so very much!

We are so pleased to hear this lovely review! What a great house it is to make some memories in. Thank you

Fabulous stay, enjoyed by all the family

August 2023

We've had a lovely time with lots of memories made. The whole family loved the cottage. We especially enjoyed the beautiful garden. If you visit Polperro, pop down to The Ship Inn on a Wednesday, the Wreckers will rock your world!

Fabulous time staying at Polgassic Mill! Comfy beds, great sleep as so peaceful and quiet. Plenty of space and lots of lovely outdoor seating from which to admire the rolling countryside.Plenty to do nearby or a short drive. Definitely be back!

July 2023

We had a very enjoyable stay at Polgassic Mill despite the inclement weather and the property had everything we needed, thank you

April 2023

The perfect spot for a uni reunion - 4 South Africans, spread across the world, meeting up to natter, eat, walk the SW Coast Path (from Mevagissey to Cremyll over a week!) and chat and laugh! This is a beautiful home - very comfy and tastefully arranged. The kitchen is so well equipped too. Thank you

October 2022

A very enjoyable stay with lovely surrounding countryside views. The cream teas found upon arrival was very much appreciated. We were fortunate with the weather being warm and sunny enabling us to eat at the patio table in the mornings. The dogs loved playing in the large garden.

July 2022

Simply fantastic!, beautiful house, amazing location, weather to die for and every outdoor activity catered for. Many, many thanks

June 2022

Thank you again for a lovely stay (our second time!) House and garden are amazing, very relaxing.

June 2022

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the lanes leading to the property had plenty of passing spaces, the gardens were well kept, the mill was well equipped with comfortable beds. The stairs to this first floor are steep and slightly slanted. The floors creak, but that is to be expected in a converted mill. Shame about the cost of parking in Polperro, definitely let’s it down.

Wonderful week at Polgassic Mill, house is glorious! Loved exploring local beaches. Hope to be back!

May 2022

Spent a really enjoyable week in this comfortable house. Didn't want to leave! The garden was a treat as well. Thank you it was a lovely stay!

April 2022

It was a gorgeous location and a beautiful house. I would definitely recommend it to other people, unless they have problems with very uneven stairs. We had two families staying there and it was a great size for us. We loved the conservatory in the late afternoon/ evening. The wood burner was amazing. So easy to light and efficient.

August 2021

This is an amazing barn conversion tucked down a quiet country lane. The barn was spacious with lovely furnishings and linens etc. There was absolutely everything you need for a large family get together even down to barbecue coals! Although situated in a beautiful rural area the nearest beach is only a couple of miles away, providing the best of both worlds. I Highly recommend this property.

August 2021

A beautiful place to stay , extremely well equipped and clean . stunning surroundings and the little babbling stream in the garden made it perfect . Will return .

June 2021

Lovely property in wonderful spot

May 2021

Whilst the weather was set to wet! We still had an amazing time in this most wonderful property

May 2021

The dinning room was rather dark making it not very pleasant to use.

May 2021

Fantastic rural local location the perfect hideaway holiday

April 2021

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It’s such a beautiful house in wonderful surroundings and we already want to go back! Jennifer the housekeeper was so helpful when we needed to contact her and the house was lovely and clean and the brand new bathrooms were luxury!

August 2020

Polgassic Mill is a really spacious converted barn in an idyllic spot. The barn was super comfortable and well furnished with everything you could need and more! We spent 10 days at the property and absolutely loved it and everything the surrounding area had to offer. If you like biking then NT Lanhydrock is near-by where there are some fab biking trails and a skills track. We highly recommend Polgassic Mill for a relaxing and/or action packed holiday.
