For those wanting a different holiday, reminiscent of the great seaside holidays of the 1950’s here’s an opportunity to climb aboard a recently refurbished 100-year-old Great Western Railway camping coach.

Located in a quiet siding at the Blue Anchor station on the West Somerset Railway Line, a short stroll from the long, wide sand and shingle beach, guests can experience the authenticity and carefree days of the GWR camping coach holidays, but with the advantage of modern facilities.

Blue Anchor station is part of the picturesque West Somerset Steam Railway, where families and steam enthusiasts can enjoy the nostalgia of a bygone era of travel as well as involve themselves in the many themed events scheduled throughout the year (see their website for details).

Sleeping 6, this comfortable carriage, presented in a classic seaside style is ideally placed to explore West Somerset, North Devon and Exmoor, which is only a mile and a half from the carriage, including Dunster Castle, Porlock, Doniford fossil beach as well as Lynton and Lynmouth.

Jump on the steam train and puff your way along a beautiful stretch of coastline to the seaside town of Minehead with all its attractions, including the South West coastal footpath.

Other places of interest include the ancient small harbour town of Watchet, Cleeve Abbey, the Bakelite Museum and some of the best cream tea places in Britain.

Nearby there’s a small seasonal shop selling the basics (Holburne Blue Anchor Shop), 2 pubs serving food and drinks and the Driftwood café, serving delicious fresh cooked meals, including local fish, teas and cakes is a short walk away. Minehead, with all the amenities of a seaside town and its sandy beach is a short drive away.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

The Camping Coach is located on a siding on a working railway.

For your own safety, please do not stray onto the railway and please make sure that young children are supervised at all times, especially if they leave the immediate area of the carriage.

It is VERY strongly advised NOT to crawl under the carriage as you will almost certainly bump something.  Also, always take care on the stairs up to the carriage.

Neither the owners or Toad Hall Cottages will be held responsible for the safety of anyone not obeying these simple rules.

Please note:  West Somerset Railway resuming services in March 2022.  Please check their website for the latest information (http://www.wsr.org.uk/).

The Railway Carriage still provides a great base for visiting and exploring this delightful area.

The South West Coast Path begins in Minehead, on the quayside, before winding its way around 630 miles of glorious coastline. North Hill, where Exmoor National Park begins, dominates the town and its green slopes can be seen for miles around. It is just a short walk from the centre of town so without venturing far you can enjoy the countryside and even spot red deer and Exmoor ponies.

Popular local activities include fishing trips, boat trips from the harbour to the unspoilt Lundy Island, a visit to the nearby medieval village of Dunster for its ancient castle, stunning gardens and traditional tea rooms, and day trips to the pretty coastal harbour towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. Meanwhile,a day pass for nearby Butlins will keep the kids entertained on days when the beach doesn’t appeal.

A holiday cottage in Minehead is the perfect base for those looking for a coastal holiday with a healthy dose of moorland life just a stone's throw away.

A delight to visit. The standard of the exhibits is extremely high and the docents knowledgeable and helpful. Adequate and shady car parking and there is a courtesy van that will take you up the hill to the castle - an advantage if the knees are no longer what they were. Dunster village is also well worth the visit - used in the Poirot TV series in the episode "The Cornish Mystery" you'll recognise the market immediately. Recommended!

Lovely place to visit. The walk up is worth it to see the views.

Well worth a visit. The views from the castle and the gardens are particularly lovely.

Excellent day especially as one could travel day with a Rover ticket. Very helpful staff as well.

November 2023

We booked a return trip on the railway. Staff were really pleasant and helpful, nice views along the way.

June 2022

Sadly this attraction was not fully operational when we went this time, although we have been on it before and loved it!

June 2021

Sadly closed due to Covid. Lovely little station right in the town. Would most certainly have used it

August 2020

The West Somerset Railway is an absolute must, a really lovely scenic ride with interesting things to see at some of the main stations up and down the line. Chat to the station masters they are so knowledgeable and love to tell you anything and everything they know about the railway. The entire day (two days actually it takes to do it all properly) were just a dream.

What a wonderful day out. A special thank you to your volunteer, Les, who took time out to talk to our son about what was coming up and the different noises on his first Steam Train experience.

Blue Anchor Bay & Dunster
(Less than a mile)

(2)

Long sand and shingle beaches peppered with alabaster rocks that are perfect for finding fossils, Blue Anchor Bay and Dunster Beach in Somerset are adjacent to one another, and are beautiful places to while away the afternoon, whatever time of the year. Dogs are allowed on the beaches all year round, which is a novelty, there are toilets close by, and a pub as well for those lazy lunches after a morning’s stroll.  The West Somerset Railway comes close to the beach, adding an extra layer of interest, and there’s plenty of parking close to both of them as well, which is always a blessing.  The beaches are tidal and can get a little muddy at low tide, so careful not to slip and don’t get caught out when the water comes in!

Both well-worth a visit.

Minehead Beach
(3 miles)

(1)

Perpetually featured amongst the best beaches in the area, Minehead Beach is in one of Somerset’s busiest holiday areas.  Divided into two sections, The Strand is a wide sand and shingle beach that faces North-to-North West, it looks out across the Bristol Channel towards Wales. Terminus meanwhile is the north-facing part that was almost completely washed away in the early ‘90s.  After a multimillion pound project, a sea wall was completed.  Today it’s an excellent spot for swimming, kite-surfing and windsurfing.  Dog restrictions apply in the summer and there are cafes, restaurants, toilets and shops all close by.

Great beach with plenty of space for the dogs to run. Very clean.

March 2022

Porlock Beach
(11 miles)

After 30 miles of Exmoor coastline that’s predominantly cliffs, at Porlock the land flattens out and a unique mile long shingle ridge and an inland salt marsh have formed.  It’s a short walk from there to the centre of Porlock, where there are lots of marked footpaths to explore.  Porlock Weir Beach itself is a pebble beach that welcomes dogs all year round.  It’s a prime spot for swimming, fishing, surfing and sailing, and there are cafes, restaurants, toilets, pubs and shops close by to explore.  There is pay and display parking close to the beach, so don’t forget your change when you visit, and you will be pleased to know that the water quality is reputedly excellent.

Lynmouth Beach
(19 miles)

A shingle beach that arcs out into the sea from Lynton, Lynmouth Beach is a popular spot for surfing, but there’s no lifeguard cover so be careful when you go!  The area is known for its excellent scenery and pleasant walking along the sea front and along the banks of the Lyn River which flows between the two towns of Lynton and Lynmouth.  There is also a cliff railway from Lynton down to the sea front.  At Lynton there is a smaller beach with rocks at low tide, while Lynmouth Beach is longer and sandier.  Lynmouth has level access all the way along, and there are several car parks in the town as well as road parking by the river and beach.  Toilets, cafes and shops are close by, but there aren’t any activities available, it’s all about enjoying the scenery!

Wringcliff Beach
(21 miles)

On the South West Coast Path, Wringcliff Beach is within walking distance of the little town of Lynton and a number of secluded bays along the coastline.  The beach itself is a secluded bay surrounded by high cliffs with a steep access path, making it a tricky one to visit if you have small children with you.  Of course, because it’s a little difficult to get to, it’s also wonderfully peaceful with incredible views to enjoy. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year around and it’s perfect for adventurous walkers.  There’s parking is in the valley of the rocks which is accessed and signposted through Lynton, but once you’re there it’s not that easy to reach toilets and restaurants, to if the weather permits, take a picnic and enjoy the day!

August 2023

We had a great time.

July 2023

Great holiday in a lovely comfortable accommodation with all the mod cons. Will come back sometime.

July 2023

Good old fashioned holiday. Close to the beach and trains. Eight year old and six year old, counting the waves from passing trains. Very friendly station staff, guided tours of Blue Anchor station. Sea not attractive for bathing, due to it being a muddy estuary!

June 2023

It was an absolutely amazing holiday and already planning our return

June 2023

We had an amazing holiday one of the best with the grandchildren so far. Seeing the steam trains go past the window, enjoyed counting how many people waved at the kids. The supply of books and videos kept us busy .going on one for a day out was lovely.Dunster Castle, Watcher, Lynton and Lydmouth would highly recommend

June 2023

We enjoyed our week in the railway carriage, great views of the sea and steam trains. It was a very relaxing week and we would happily return for another holiday.

May 2023

A week very much enjoyed by all in spite of the complete absense of any shops within 5 miles

May 2023

Had a great time, my daughter was delighted when she found out where we were staying and loved the way passengers on trains waved as they passed us - our own mini-Orient Express. Some of the comments in the visitors' book had us in fits - no wardrobes indeed! She wouldn't, however, let me write: "No wardrobes! How on earth are we to get to Narnia?" The Station master told us the coach's name is "Carol" and that's how we shall think of her from now on.

May 2023

Another excellent stay, thanks.

May 2023

very cosy. just like steppin into 60's.

November 2022

Excellent housekeeping team, beautifully clean

October 2022

Very relaxing and peaceful. Proximity to the Railway and the sea .

September 2022

A really great stay although I feel I must mention that all the towels were extremely damp when we arrived. There was a pile on each of the three beds and if left any longer would have caused the bedding to become damp too. It took a good two days for the towels to dry out properly on the clothes airer.

August 2022

We had a lovely stay! The railway carriage was ideally situated and the children absolutely loved being able to wave to the trains going past on the steam railway. The beds were very comfy and the railway carriage well equipped. Close to good beaches, and nice cycle rides easily accessible too. Really enjoyed our stay, which could only have been improved by a couple of fairly minor suggestions which I have noted above - hope the owners consider taking these into account.

August 2022

We enjoyed a wonderful week at the railway carriage. It’s the perfect base for steam train enthusiasts! Blue Anchor itself is quiet and peaceful with lots to explore in the surrounding areas. The carriage is exceptionally well equipped with lots of extras supplied such as dressing gowns, heated blankets, hot water bottles and folding outdoor chairs. It has recently had new carpets fitted and the shower is now bigger than standard. Highly recommended!

June 2022

Loved this accommodation beds comfortable, clean & spacious ,the location was just nice to visit other surrounding areas, definitely will return.

June 2022

We very much enjoyed this property- was actually far better than we anticipated. Lovely to have sea views on one side and countryside the other. We really settled quickly into a relaxed holiday mode. A great base for exploring this part of the Somerset coast.

May 2022

Lovely carriage in an excellent position. Very authentic

May 2022

Comfortable, characterful carriage. Great location with plenty to do nearby. Watch the steam trains go by while enjoying a late breakfast. We had a great stay, helped by some very good weather!

May 2022

Very pleased. Would definitely think about booking again.

October 2021

Had a fabulous time, really enjoyed our stay in a very unique type of accommodation.

Thank you for your feedback. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at the Railway Carriage.

October 2021

Yes we enjoyed our stay. After we cleaned the shower, wash hand basin, and the kitchen sink drainer.

September 2021

Comfortable, clean , cosy and everything we needed was there

August 2021

It was the best holiday we have had. Location and facilities excellent. Three people have requested information regarding this property for holidays. Thank you for a great time.

August 2021

Apart from the weather and the steam trains not following the usual timetable we had a lovely stay.

November 2020

Fabulous! Cosy, warm, well-equipped, clean, fun, different. Would recommend any day!

October 2020

Yes. The weather wasn't very good but we enjoyed the stay and the location.

October 2020

Wonderful holiday will be back when the trains are running.

September 2020

Loved our visit and will return at some point. We had an idea of what the accomodation would be like and it didn't disappoint in any way. A small maintenance problem was quickly attended to by the caretaker and owner, so didn't detract from our stay.

August 2020

The carriage was in really good condition for it's age and was tastefully decorated with modern features whilst maintaining its heritage. Would definitely consider a future carriage holiday as the kids absolutely loved it. All correspondence from Toad Hall Cottages was prompt and informative especially in the current climate alleviating any concerns we had including providing options should we wish to postpone. Thank you for providing such a unique experience!

November 2019

We certainly did enjoy our stay and could not fault the standard of equipment and the thought which had gone into all the little extras which made the stay so interesting and extremely comfortable. The location of course was perfect and we would not hesitate to recommend to others this venue.

September 2019

We had a great week in the carriage. My 3 year old son had the time of his life watching and waving at the passing trains on the West Somerset Railway.

September 2019

Our second visit and we really feel at home there. It's just a lovely place to be and absolutely enchanting and nostalgic when the steam trains pass by.

August 2019

It was lovely & peaceful, with the trains passing infrequently. A very nice area to stay.

May 2019

The railway was a joy....we shall return

April 2019

We very much enjoyed our stay only marred by the absence of steam trains due to maintenance required at the location. We will book again if we can fit into any of the slots still available this year.

October 2018

Loved our golden wedding celebration . On our own in a such a beautiful carriage. So handy for the trains ????. Something we had never done in 50 years ha ha . Perfection. Would fully recommend the experience. Hope to return again.

September 2018

Yes, had a lovely relaxing time.

September 2018

Initial wi-fi problems but sorted. Absolutely fantastic place- even 17 year old lad enjoyed it-high praise. Good breakfast at Driftwood Café. Great real ale and food at Blue Anchor Inn- well worth the long walk. Thoroughly recommended

August 2018

We had a wonderful time - left some other comments in the carriage

July 2018

Everything fantastic, As we were on public transport it was very good to see the tea and coffee supplied as there are no shops nearby

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for your comments. For your information there is a small shop nearby whereby you can purchase basics. We hope to welcome you back to the Railway Carriage again soon!
