Visitors love this beautiful, Georgian market town that’s also a popular sailing resort. Lymington boasts three marinas and was the training ground for local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, you can see the golden letter box at the bottom of the high street, painted in recognition of his success with a fifth Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Lymington is one of the largest towns in the New Forest and has a key role in the life of the area. This charming town is packed full of history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and is an important port on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent. Human habitation in the Lymington area dates back to the Iron Age, and a 6th Century BC hill fort known locally as Buckland Rings can still be seen today. As with many other towns and villages in the area, Lymington thrived during the Norman Conquest, thanks to its key location on the south coast.

If you want to leave your car at home and come by train, Lymington Rail line is a branch off the main Waterloo to Weymouth line. Once here, you’ll find regular buses with stops all over the New Forest and coastline.

There are lots of places to walk and amble in and around Lymington, these include characterful cobbled streets leading down to the town quay and harbour – a great place to relax and watch harbour life - fishing boats land their haul, yachts and leisure boats coming in and out.

There are lots of town events, activities and day trips from Lymington including fishing trips, boat and sailing charters, canoeing and kayaking, diving trips, mini cruises and ferry over to the Isle of Wight with your car or as a foot passenger.

Saturdays in the high street are a hive of activity, with a weekly street market selling everything from plants, clothes and household goods to home-made cakes, fruit and veg and a whole lot more. Shopping is great with a high street brands mixed with an interesting and eclectic mix of independent retailers and boutiques. There are a few supermarkets and specialist food shops for provisions to take back to your cottage, including one that makes their own home-made dishes and desserts and freezes them.

Lymington also has a number of really good eateries in and around the town, with the main concentration being around the high street. Lanes of Lymington serves superb food and also runs a cookery school. The Elderflower, whose chef/proprietor hails from the famous 5* Chewton Glen Hotel is superb.

During the warmer months you can relax in the bandstand gardens and enjoy some free musical entertainment. A few minutes’ further on are Lymington Sea Water Baths, the oldest of their kind in the UK, dating back to 1833. A short walk further on is the start of Keyhaven Nature Reserve. Well worth going to if you like birds, wildlife and natural beauty complimented with wonderful views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

The Kings Arms
(Less than a mile)

(4)

An atmospheric, former coaching inn dating back to the 17th century in the centre of Lymington with a pleasant beer garden. A regular stop for locals to have a drink, the Kings Arms serves good, honest pub food from a friendly crew of staff. The pub maybe historic, yet entertainment is very much twenty first century, with a regular and varied selection of live music, DJ, quiz nights and TV sports events.

The Angel & Blue Pig

A stylish and elegant gastro pub on the high street, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Lots of wooden beams, bare brick walls, large fire place and pretty soft furnishings - there’s also outside seating. The Angel and Blue Pig specialize in steaks, which receive great reviews. The main menu changes each month and is supplemented by daily specials. All the dishes are creative, varied and beautifully presented. A delightful spot for a drink or bite to eat.

June 2023

Great steak and good service

July 2021

A decent pub serving decent food at a decent price. I very much enjoyed the meal, shame about the flat beer.

July 2021

Nice pub in the centre of Lymington, food was lovely, shame there wasn't any cask ales - we visited this pub for lunch on the basis of the Good Pub Guide.

May 2021

Good food and service

September 2020

Friendly staff, good food, comfortable surroundings

August 2020

Very disappointing. So much so that I submitted a complaint to customer service via email and the response was very unsatisfactory too! My advice would be to avoid.

November 2019

Visited this pub whilst on holiday. My wife and I had the intention of eating there, although we had not booked. We ordered 2 drinks (beer) which I could not drink at all. I took them back to the bar with the intention of asking them to be replaced. I waited for 15 minutes. During this time the 2 bar staff who were on duty walked past several times whilst serving other customers. Neither showed any interest in finding out what my problem was or that they knew I was there. In the end I left the beer on the bar and walked out. I have visited Lymington several times in the past and hope to holiday there again in the future, but I will never go into this place again.

May 2019

Very disappointing and long delay in seating us on arrival despite having a reservation.

January 2018

We loved this pub! We went with the kids for a quick drink around lunchtime and then came back in the evening without the kids. Great atmosphere, well furnished, and great drinks on offer. The menu looked fantastic too, however, we didn't get to sample it! We'll definitely go again if we return to Lymington.

July 2017

Perfect for lunch. They have a £6 lunchtime menu which offers excellent value for money. I had the wild mushroom linguine. Delicious and good sized portion. My husband had the burger which comes with fries and homemade ketchup. Staff are friendly and chatty too which is nice.

pleasant cafe also

February 2024

Visited on a damp day on my own, interesting museum and a good Art Gallery within the same building. Very nice and well staffed cafe area with a good selection of tasty food and nice coffee.

October 2023

Had a nice meal here upon arrival in Lymington. Very pleasant helpful staff. Also, a very nice gift shop, and Tourist Information centre.

October 2023

Brilliant Museum and the cafe is excellent

September 2023

Excellent museum that tells the story of the town and local area and also has space for changing exhibitions. Also acts as the local visitor info centre and has plenty of information about things to do in the area. There's also a nice gift shop and super little cafe.

September 2023

Great little museum. Very informative about the history of the area and even our teenagers enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit.

August 2022

A bit of a hidden gem really, very good and informative displays in a well laid out and spacious environment, we particularly liked the community involvement with a group of local children very actively enjoying the surroundings, the coffee shop and the engaging and helpful staff. If anything the museum could sell itself to the public better - we nearly didn't go in as there was little to explain what was inside other than the art galleries

May 2022

Wonderful art exhibition and everyone was very helpful. Great cafe and recommend the coffee and biscuits!

October 2021

Well worth spending a morning learning about the history of Lymington and the wider New Forest area. There is always an interesting pop up exhibition too. The cafe is great and serves lovely home made food.

Wonderful 1833 pool - I preferred the 20 degree temperature to the stifling 30 degree in the Leisure Centre. Very friendly staff. The most spacious pool I've swum in anywhere. Swam here most days £4.00 for two hours a bargain.

September 2023

We swam here pretty much every morning of our stay that it was open. Good value for general swimming - the more expensive inflatables course looked like great fun but we didn't try it ourselves. Such a good way to start the day, and a great facility for the town as there's no beach. Would have been even better if it opened earlier or later in the day.

September 2023

We spent an afternoon there and the children enjoyed the inflatables. The weather was good. Changing rooms not clearly signed though.

August 2023

Brilliant place loved it although water was bracing

August 2023

This is a must for everyone, especially for teenagers who love a challenge. We left our two on the assault course for 2 hours whilst we wandered the salt marshes on the Solent Way nearby. The ice cream kiosk next to the baths is value for money too and sells the local ice cream with generous portions.

August 2022

Planning to go there as looked good with all the fun equipment you could hire but found the cost for a family of six (two adults, four children) too expensive so did not go after all.

August 2021

We had a great time on the inflatables one morning. My son loved it! Friendly staff and good to hire wet suits.

August 2021

Did paddle boarding here, a great safe place to give it a try.

August 2021

Great activity, kids loved it! Harder than it looks.

Lovely sea walk within 15 minutes of the cottage.

March 2024

A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

March 2019

Great for a dog walk along the spit to Hurst Castle. Needles Eye cafe is a welcome break, quite good food but very busy and a bit basic.

December 2017

Barton on Sea
(6 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(7 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

April 2024

The cottage was delightful and so convenient for the high street would defintely recommend.

February 2024

The cottage is ideally situated being so close to the High Street, especially M&S and Waitrose! Nonetheless it was very quiet and peaceful and had the added bonus of secure, onsite parking. On the whole, apart from the comments noted, it was comfortable; well appointed with thoughtful attention to detail. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend walking through the reserve at Keyhaven.

January 2024

Excellent response time when we arrived and found the heating not working, especially as it was the Saturday before Christmas. One of the best equipped cottages we have stayed in (could do with replacing a few of the saucepans though)

September 2023

August 2023

Hazy Days coffee shop was also very good as was the fish and chips at Deep Blue. We really enjoyed the 30 minute boat trip to Puffin Bill (Puffin Cruises) which leaves from the Quay side. We biked across the marshes to Milford on Sea, a walk or a bike ride along this route is well worth doing. Lymington Market on Saturday was busy with a good mix of stalls. We also enjoyed trips to Exbury Gardens (great place for adults and children) Rhinefield Ornamental Drive (beautiful walk in the Forest). Beaulieu Motor Museum. Thank you for the bag and for a great place to make memories as a family.

We have had a great week staying in this lovely cottage. Marwell Zoo and Beaulieu well worth visiting. Food in the Kings Head pub lovely. Saltbox Cottage is a great base for exploring the New Forest and beyond. Thank you! Would definitely recommend to others and we would stay here again in the future.

May 2022

Saltbox was great, clean, everything we needed. So close to Tescos Express, M&S Foodhall. Ate out at Rivazz Indian twice. Also Eat Pizza was fab food (owned by same owners as Rivazz Indian) Had fish and chips from Deep Blue chippy, good, not greasy. The Sail Inn pub which is so close also does great food. The Rhinefield Ornamental Drive is a must if you want to see the beauty of the New Forest and we did the Tall Trees walk that is also there. Beaulieu Village High Street, pretty. Saturday market in Lymington was busy but fun. Enjoyed our stay, Thanks.

We had a lovely stay in Lymington and the proximity to the town was a real plus. We tried out the fish and chip shop and the Indian in the town and they were excellent. The museum was very interesting too. We know the local area quite well and enjoyed revisiting places like Bournemouth and Beaulieu. There was plenty to do in the area.

Lovely stay (as was Little Egret in July). Could house notes say why cottage is called "Saltbox"? Any historical connection to Lymington's past salt industry?

January 2018

We had a wonderful stay at Saltbox cottage. We stayed over the Christmas period and had a lovely relaxing week in Lymington. The cottage was very clean and well presented with all mod cons. It had also kindly been decorated with a Christmas tree, which was a wonderful added touch. The cottage itself is perfectly located within the town, a stones through away from many of the wonderful shops, pubs and restaurants. Overall I would highly recommend this place and will quite possibly be making another trip back. Andrew

September 2017

Everything it needed to be - and more. A beautiful cottage. Left part of our heart in Lymington! Thank you for thinking of everything so we didn't have to - pure relaxation!
