Swan Haven is perfect for either large family reunions or smaller parties. It has an indoor swimming pool which is open all year round, a games room, a sunny terrace with views of Start Bay, plenty of living space and a large rear garden. There are six bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a snug/TV room, a dining area to seat 12, a large sitting room with woodburner and a conservatory, so if you’ve had enough of your fellow guests you can always get away from them for some peace and quiet.
Alternatively wander down to the beach, walk through the Slapton Ley bird sanctuary or go for a bracing cliff walk along the south west coastal path.

Torcross is located at the southern end of Slapton Sands, a narrow strip of land between the beautiful Start Bay and the stunning freshwater lake at Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. Surrounded by picturesque scenery on all sides, Torcross is home to some fantastic cafés and pubs and is the perfect place to enjoy a sunny afternoon watching (or participating in) watersports and fishing on the vast shingle beach.
While modern day guests will find a sleepy fishing village, nestling peacefully at the edge of a 2 mile beach, the area has a fascinating past. Most famously, during World War II, Torcross was evacuated along some of its neighbouring villages to make way for 15,000 allied troops who needed the beach to practice for the D-Day landings. Tragically, the operation ended in disaster, and the Exercise Tiger memorial at the edge of the ley commemorates the 800 Americans who lost their lives in the bay.
The short coastal walk from Torcross to neighbouring Beesands provides sensational views and is dotted with remnants from the military presence, as well as traces of the area's slate quarrying past. Beesands is also home to the fantastic seafood shack Britannia @ The Beach and the popular pub The Cricket Inn.
Continuing further along this stretch of rugged coastline (if you have the stamina) you will reach Hallsands and the Lighthouse. Meanwhile, a short drive will take you to wonderful beaches at Blackpool Sands in one direction or the more remote Lannacombe, Mattiscombe and Gara Rock in the other.
Twenty minutes away, the village of East Portlemouth with its golden sandy beaches, is where you can take the passenger ferry over the estuary to Salcombe, famous for its shops, sailing and great pubs and restaurants. The towns of Dartmouth and Kingsbridge are also within easy reach while the villages nearest neighbour, Slapton also boasts two great pubs.
A holiday cottage in Torcross offers a superb spot from which to explore this magnificent stretch of South Devon coastline.

Although this is a great property in a wonderful place for a holiday, the standard of cleanliness is well below the standards one should expect when paying premium price, the wooden floor needs serious attention as it has ingrained dirt, leaving my crawling grandchild with filthy legs and feet despite my mopping to try and clean it. The vacuum was full of smelly dog hair, the toaster had not been cleaned and neither was the tumble drier which included the previous guests knickers! The internal windows and mirrors all need a thorough clean too! I’m very dissapointed with the standard particularly with the Covid 19 situation and with the response of THC, who seem to think it’s ok!

A lovely traditional pub with a great selection of local ales and lagers. We ate here twice and the food was delicious. I opted for the small fish and chips which was more than enough! Never saw the jumbo sized one but I'm sure it would have done 2 people! It was nice to see grilled fresh fish on the specials board too. And a good selection of desserts. A must place to visit if in Torcross!

A unique experience! Fabulous views from the terrace overlooking the beach and Start Bay. The fish is amazing. The John Dory I had was perfectly cooked and there was a great choice of fish on the specials' board. There is also a good range of food on the menu including burgers, sausages etc for those who don't eat fish. Although a busy venue, the atmosphere is relaxed with some coming out to eat in the evening to those who've strolled in from the beach. Definitely a must for anyone staying locally and a great way to begin our holiday.

We stayed at Torcross for 7 nights last week and had food here every day. The fish and chips cod/haddock was amazing. We also had a crab platter and smoked fish platter with lovely salad and chunks of bread - delicious. Can not wait to return, the ice creams were also great. My partner had a steak which can be difficult to get to your liking, especially if you like medium rare, but it was perfect. Your missing out if you do not try a meal here.

I have visited Start Bay Inn many times over the years, I used to live in the area. However the standards have slipped a bit and possibly not my favourite fish and chip restaurant anymore which is a shame. It doesn't help when you hear the staff arguing about work that needs to be done in the kitchen!

This pub was so good we did not bother to eat our main meals anywhere else for the whole two weeks. The fish and chips are the best we have ever eaten- not greasy at all. We love this place! A beautiful thatched pub on the beach that serves the best value and quality fish n chips in the area. Excellent pub which we have been visiting for over 30 years and it is consistently good. Being a party of 8 and eating there several times during our stay nearby we sampled most of the fish on the menu. The fish and chips were very good and the grilled fish were excellent especially the Brill. We will be back soon.

Have visited a number of times over the years but was disappointed this year which was a shame as we were staying close by and had hoped to eat there more than once during our holiday. The food was fine, hot and freshly cooked, but not a patch on previous years. We all chose traditional fish and chips and were disappointed by the number of bones found in the fish. In fairness, they do point out on the menu that the fish 'will' contain bones but really there is no need with careful preparation and secondly, the chips, being of the frozen variety, were a let down in terms of texture and flavour. We chose other local eateries for the remainder of our stay.

The Start Bay Inn is a great pub/restaurant. We used it 4 out of the 7 nights of our stay, twice having takeaway fish & chips and twice eating outside the pub at the tables provided. Excellently kept Otter beers, service excellent too. Prices reflected the location and the fact the fish is fresh and locally sourced. Wish I lived next door to it!

We have been visiting this pub for about 30 years. People are often queuing to get in when the doors open in the evenings so need to be there early, or around 9pm when the early eaters are leaving! The speciality is fish, freshly caught, often in Start Bay. The cod is excellent, available in three sizes and always freshly cooked and served very promptly. Great selection of desserts, very good portions. Beachside location, friendly staff, what else could you ask for?

The best bit was the adjacent South Hams brewery. This is a fantastic place to eat . We had been here previously when it was literally a shack - prone to strong winds and gales! However it is now ensconced in much more solid and permanent surroundings. The food is excellent - a wonderful choice of seafood dishes - all freshly prepared . It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????

Was gutted that is places had closed down the day before we got there was looking forward to trying this places. We did have a bit of luck we had just got there after a 5 hour drive not knowing it was closed and they were putting food in car oh the smell it was so good that's when they told us about colseing down. But they did lets us try some of the food they had cooked to feed 200 kids and omg it was lush . Just wish I could try more of it . Good luck with the new building

Visited a few times during our week in Beesands and also had takeaway. Great food and lovely staff who really know how to look after their customers. Even went out to rescue lost customers after a local road was closed. Will definitely visit again. Make sure you book though, they will squeeze you in if they can but they are always busy.

The best food by a mile in this area of South Devon. We had a lovely evening sat on a bench opposite - we brought our own wine as there's no licence (but this saves on costs!). We had the freshly caught and cooked lobster, 'crack-your-own' crab, and a beautiful bowl of mussels. The lady owner or manager couldn't have been more helpful - we turned up on a Friday night with no reservation, and she went out of her way to accommodate us. If you only go to one place to eat whilst on holiday in the area, then it has to be here. Yes, rustic. Yes, simple. But simple fresh food, cooked amazingly well....and what a view!!! Go with friends and make an evening of it! Cannot recommend highly enough!!

Visited on a sunny morning in May so quite busy. We were greeted at the entrance, seated inside then left. No menu provided, I had to ask for it. A couple who arrived well after us had their order taken first. We waited for ages. Then discovered there is a half hour hour gap between breakfast orders ending and lunch orders beginning when only cakes are availble, not even a sandwich. Staff were rushed and inattentive, disappointing experience.

My dacshund and I walked along the coastal path . Although Start Point was not open at the time, we were not disappointed, the coastal walk was lovely, as we got nearer to the lighthouse, we stood and watched in amazement at the tuna fish jumping high out of the water. It was spectacular to watch . I would thoroughly recommend.

Sadly lighthouse was closed due to COVID, however it was still worth a visit for the views and the walk along the headlands. It was awesome, saw lots of seals playing around the rocks. A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!
Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view

A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.

We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.

Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!

We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear,sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.

Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!

Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!

Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

We had an amazing stay, the house is beautiful and they have thought about everything. I was.so pleasantly surprised to find things like handwashes, tea towels, bin liners to name a few! The beds were really comfy and there was loads of storage space. The kitchen and dining are was brilliant and so well thought out, I loved it. The garden was amazing, so we'll kept and landscaped. The pool was fabulous and loved the touch with the speaker for the children to listen to their music. We hadnso much fun in the games area as well and my to eldest learnt how to play pool and darts. This house is such a brilliant house to stay with family or friends. We loved it and would love to stay again. For me this house had it all, the views were spectacular and I genuinely did not want to leave. Normally on holiday I am ready to go home by the end of our stay but here with all its beauty and scenery I really didn't want to leave. The area itself didn't have much but we soon found local shops and beaches etc to explore. I would definitely recommend. Excellent Excellent Excellent!!! Swan Haven is a great base for exploring the South Hams, with lovely views out to sea. It was great being able to walk to the Start Bay Inn. It was a pity that the walk to the nearby farm shop involved a short distance of walking on the side of the road without even a footpath. It certainly made one disinclined to walk there, particularly with children. The walk to Beesands either across the top or round the beach is lovely.

So it IS a bit tricky to find ( use Toad Hall`s own directions and not your sat nav) and it IS a bit expensive but oh my goodness it is so worth the extra miles and pennies. Stunningly beautiful ,big house in amazing location with beautiful garden. Pool is an absolute bonus. The house is immaculately furnished and clean and you want for nothing kitchen equipment-wise. The set up of bedrooms is great as it means there is a lot of privacy . The downstairs bedrooms are almost like a self contained flat. Just FYI there are lots of things that I took which were provided so bear with me for the boring bit....! There were plenty of pool toys, dishwasher tabs, wash up liquid, bin bags, liquid soap, hand gel, hairdryers, 2 fans. Basics like salt and pepper are also there. The washing machines are massive as is the tumble dryer ( 2 of each). There are 2 high chairs. The sea is WILD even on a calm day but safer beaches are nearby. The café (within walking distance) do a fab breakfast but didnt open til 10 am when we were there. A visit to the Start Bay Inn is a must. Amazing food and great service but you absolutely need to book. We went out of school holidays and even then most tables were taken so will prob be hectic July/August. We had a couple of minor issues which were promptly sorted by John and his team. Just be aware that the garden has only just been beautifully landscaped. It was scorching weather when we went last week which necessitated in a chap coming in twice a day to water the new plants. Didn`t bother us but be aware you may find a stranger in the garden!!! I`m trying to be generous but I am HUGELY jealous of anyone staying there now. Portsmouth seems very dull now!!!!! ENJOY !!

Swan Haven is a lovely property and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay ; we would have preferred it to have been a non-smoking property as there was a distinct smell of cigarette smoke in the living-room and snug. Your cleaners were fantastic and did an excellent job. The freezer and fridge ice compartment should be de-frosted periodically as there was ice build-up. It was really useful to have the separate freezer and also amazing to have 2 washing-machines and 2 tumble-driers.

We loved the house and its location and found Torcross to be delightful with a pub, a restaurant and a cafe. Our daughter lives in France and has been to many beaches but said that some of the beaches she visited in the area were beautiful. She loved the way the rolling hills go right down to the beach making them particularly attractive. It was really good to have a main sitting room with a large TV and a smaller room with a screen and computer games which worked well with children of different ages. The indoor pool was an asset but incredibly hot as we couldn't open the door to the outside. All in all we had a great time.

(HAVING STAYED IN SLAPTON ON A PREVIOUS OCCASION we did find it inconvenient that the road was inaccessible to Dartmouth (and thus onward to Torquay etc) and Blackpool Sands other than a long drive around. - we tried the diversion but that was not much better either. Not your fault of course, but a definite niggle. Luckily with the fabulous fabulous house having so many great amenities it was not as disastrous as we may have found it where we stayed last year.

Swan Haven is a beautiful place, located in a lovely part of the world. There were lots of facilities at the property for the younger ones (and young at heart) to occupy themselves. Great coastal walks and fabulous views. There was ample room for all 11 of us and the second sitting room was a real bonus for us older members of the group. The younger ones really enjoyed the outside space and the chiminea in the evenings. Fabulous holiday - enjoyed by all.

An extremely well equipped large property, excellent standard. Would recommend SWAN HAVEN for a family holiday Only one unsatisfactory situation - the pool temperature failed to reach the advertised temperature which was very disappointing as the four Grandchildren commented on how cold the pool felt. The problem was not recified even after a pool maintenance visit.

Thanks great property. Really impressed that there was lots of cutlery, sharp knives. Cake prosecco and milk was a nice touch. Only small downsides were the BBQ wasn't ready to use - It was surprisingly hot and the outside table and chairs had leaves under them. Gas oven was hard to control for us. Pool was great - did go cloudy for a while but it cleared up.

Christmas at Swan Haven was a total delight. My 60th birthday fell just before Christmas Day so this was a double celebration which we shared with our 2 daughters and partners. It was a totally relaxing experience, even cooking Christmas dinner was enjoyable and stress free. Swan Haven provided the space and facilities that anyone could ask for. My only regret is that is was so mild we did not light the log burner. Anyone thinking of booking for next Christmas should not hesitate.

Swan Haven is a lovely property and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay ; we would have preferred it to have been a non-smoking property as there was a distinct smell of cigarette smoke in the living-room and snug. Your cleaners were fantastic and did an excellent job. The freezer and fridge ice compartment should be de-frosted periodically as there was ice build-up. It was really useful to have the separate freezer and also amazing to have 2 washing-machines and 2 tumble-driers.

The property itself is ideal for large family group. And particularly good facilities for children . The property was everything we hoped it would be apart from lack of rubbish collection and cleanliness of the property.

We loved the house and its location and found Torcross to be delightful with a pub, a restaurant and a cafe. Our daughter lives in France and has been to many beaches but said that some of the beaches she visited in the area were beautiful. She loved the way the rolling hills go right down to the beach making them particularly attractive. It was really good to have a main sitting room with a large TV and a smaller room with a screen and computer games which worked well with children of different ages. The indoor pool was an asset but incredibly hot as we couldn't open the door to the outside. All in all we had a great time.

(HAVING STAYED IN SLAPTON ON A PREVIOUS OCCASION we did find it inconvenient that the road was inaccessible to Dartmouth (and thus onward to Torquay etc) and Blackpool Sands other than a long drive around. - we tried the diversion but that was not much better either. Not your fault of course, but a definite niggle. Luckily with the fabulous fabulous house having so many great amenities it was not as disastrous as we may have found it where we stayed last year.

Swan Haven is a beautiful place, located in a lovely part of the world. There were lots of facilities at the property for the younger ones (and young at heart) to occupy themselves. Great coastal walks and fabulous views. There was ample room for all 11 of us and the second sitting room was a real bonus for us older members of the group. The younger ones really enjoyed the outside space and the chiminea in the evenings. Fabulous holiday - enjoyed by all.

Although we only had a couple of good weather days, the outside space was fully used by everyone right down to eating a BBQ on the front terrace as the sun went down. Great house, great location. Well equipped - although 2 tea towels not enough for 12 people for a week! Everything really was fantastic. We met the owner who was delightful and welcoming to his family home and garden. Pool was cooler than advertised. Otherwise a great week.
Thank you for the feedback, this was investigated during the weekly pool maintenance visit and the filter had been blocked and will then take 2-3 days to return to normal temperature. Would recommend SWAN HAVEN for a family holiday Only one unsatisfactory situation - the pool temperature failed to reach the advertised temperature which was very disappointing as the four Grandchildren commented on how cold the pool felt. The problem was not recified even after a pool maintenance visit.

Thanks great property. Really impressed that there was lots of cutlery, sharp knives. Cake prosecco and milk was a nice touch. Only small downsides were the BBQ wasn't ready to use - It was surprisingly hot and the outside table and chairs had leaves under them. Gas oven was hard to control for us. Pool was great - did go cloudy for a while but it cleared up.

We had a wonderful week in Swan Haven. A really great house for a big party with so many features that the younger members of the group just didn't want to venture outside. Christmas at Swan Haven was a total delight. My 60th birthday fell just before Christmas Day so this was a double celebration which we shared with our 2 daughters and partners. It was a totally relaxing experience, even cooking Christmas dinner was enjoyable and stress free. Swan Haven provided the space and facilities that anyone could ask for. My only regret is that is was so mild we did not light the log burner. Anyone thinking of booking for next Christmas should not hesitate.

Although this is a great property in a wonderful place for a holiday, the standard of cleanliness is well below the standards one should expect when paying premium price, the wooden floor needs serious attention as it has ingrained dirt, leaving my crawling grandchild with filthy legs and feet despite my mopping to try and clean it. The vacuum was full of smelly dog hair, the toaster had not been cleaned and neither was the tumble drier which included the previous guests knickers! The internal windows and mirrors all need a thorough clean too! I’m very dissapointed with the standard particularly with the Covid 19 situation and with the response of THC, who seem to think it’s ok!

A unique experience! Fabulous views from the terrace overlooking the beach and Start Bay. The fish is amazing. The John Dory I had was perfectly cooked and there was a great choice of fish on the specials' board. There is also a good range of food on the menu including burgers, sausages etc for those who don't eat fish. Although a busy venue, the atmosphere is relaxed with some coming out to eat in the evening to those who've strolled in from the beach. Definitely a must for anyone staying locally and a great way to begin our holiday.

We stayed at Torcross for 7 nights last week and had food here every day. The fish and chips cod/haddock was amazing. We also had a crab platter and smoked fish platter with lovely salad and chunks of bread - delicious. Can not wait to return, the ice creams were also great. My partner had a steak which can be difficult to get to your liking, especially if you like medium rare, but it was perfect. Your missing out if you do not try a meal here.

This pub was so good we did not bother to eat our main meals anywhere else for the whole two weeks. The fish and chips are the best we have ever eaten- not greasy at all. We love this place! A beautiful thatched pub on the beach that serves the best value and quality fish n chips in the area. Excellent pub which we have been visiting for over 30 years and it is consistently good. Being a party of 8 and eating there several times during our stay nearby we sampled most of the fish on the menu. Have visited a number of times over the years but was disappointed this year which was a shame as we were staying close by and had hoped to eat there more than once during our holiday. The food was fine, hot and freshly cooked, but not a patch on previous years. We all chose traditional fish and chips and were disappointed by the number of bones found in the fish. In fairness, they do point out on the menu that the fish 'will' contain bones but really there is no need with careful preparation and secondly, the chips, being of the frozen variety, were a let down in terms of texture and flavour. We chose other local eateries for the remainder of our stay.

The Start Bay Inn is a great pub/restaurant. We used it 4 out of the 7 nights of our stay, twice having takeaway fish & chips and twice eating outside the pub at the tables provided. We have been visiting this pub for about 30 years. People are often queuing to get in when the doors open in the evenings so need to be there early, or around 9pm when the early eaters are leaving! The speciality is fish, freshly caught, often in Start Bay. The cod is excellent, available in three sizes and always freshly cooked and served very promptly. Great selection of desserts, very good portions. Beachside location, friendly staff, what else could you ask for?

The best bit was the adjacent South Hams brewery. This is a fantastic place to eat . We had been here previously when it was literally a shack - prone to strong winds and gales! However it is now ensconced in much more solid and permanent surroundings. The food is excellent - a wonderful choice of seafood dishes - all freshly prepared . The staff are lovely and the service is great. Incredibly good value- plus you can take your own wine for a small corkage charge . thoroughly recommended for everyone who loves fish and seafood.

It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????

Was gutted that is places had closed down the day before we got there was looking forward to trying this places. We did have a bit of luck we had just got there after a 5 hour drive not knowing it was closed and they were putting food in car oh the smell it was so good that's when they told us about colseing down. But they did lets us try some of the food they had cooked to feed 200 kids and omg it was lush . Just wish I could try more of it . Good luck with the new building

Visited a few times during our week in Beesands and also had takeaway. Great food and lovely staff who really know how to look after their customers. Even went out to rescue lost customers after a local road was closed. Will definitely visit again. Make sure you book though, they will squeeze you in if they can but they are always busy.

The best food by a mile in this area of South Devon. We had a lovely evening sat on a bench opposite - we brought our own wine as there's no licence (but this saves on costs!). We had the freshly caught and cooked lobster, 'crack-your-own' crab, and a beautiful bowl of mussels. The lady owner or manager couldn't have been more helpful - we turned up on a Friday night with no reservation, and she went out of her way to accommodate us. If you only go to one place to eat whilst on holiday in the area, then it has to be here. Yes, rustic. Yes, simple. But simple fresh food, cooked amazingly well....and what a view!!! Go with friends and make an evening of it! Cannot recommend highly enough!!

Visited on a sunny morning in May so quite busy. We were greeted at the entrance, seated inside then left. No menu provided, I had to ask for it. A couple who arrived well after us had their order taken first. We waited for ages. Then discovered there is a half hour hour gap between breakfast orders ending and lunch orders beginning when only cakes are availble, not even a sandwich. Staff were rushed and inattentive, disappointing experience.

My dacshund and I walked along the coastal path . Although Start Point was not open at the time, we were not disappointed, the coastal walk was lovely, as we got nearer to the lighthouse, we stood and watched in amazement at the tuna fish jumping high out of the water. It was spectacular to watch . I would thoroughly recommend.

Sadly lighthouse was closed due to COVID, however it was still worth a visit for the views and the walk along the headlands. It was awesome, saw lots of seals playing around the rocks. We did a circular walk which included Hallsands, and the lighthouse, and would throughly recommend visiting the lighthouse, if just for the views. Friendly and professional, they have an indoor school and an outdoor school so you can organise lessons whatever the weather, and you can borrow hats when you’re visiting as well if you don’t have your own. You can opt for private or group lessons, and there are toilets and changing facilities on site as well as plenty of parking. The school is two miles inland from Slapton Sands, so you can also combine your lesson with a trip to the historic D-Day training site and a wander along the beach if you fancy it!

A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!
Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view

A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.

We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.

Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. Sadly the sea has removed the road handy for parking and is gradually eroding the cliff edges. I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!

We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear,sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.

Lovely little place, great to take a picnic as no facilities but that's part of its charm. Wonderful views of Start Bay and a great base to walk to Start Point and beyond or to Beesands. Well worth a visit.

Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!

Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!

Fantastic beach! Secluded and beautiful. Windy narrow lanes to reach it but worth it. We were able to get a car space in the small car park which was great. Our dog loved it and so did we!

We walked here from East Prawle, it was a delightful find and we explored the beach whilst en route along the coastal path. I imagine it would be extremely busy in high season but we were the only ones there so felt very lucky to have found it.

Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

Beautiful clean beach with excellent facilities.Clean toilets lovely cafe and shop.Lifeguard on the beach.No dogs allowed.Plenty of parking.We enjoyed rock pooling at the far end of the beach.The owner does a great job.You can also visit Blackpool Sands garden but we did not have time.Also a juggler was there on the day we went great fun for everyone.
