July 2017
We love this place, probably popped in most days for delicious meat, cheese and treats. We don't eat out often as our dog is nervous around dogs that get too close so eating in can feel like a chore. But with lovely grub from a friendly shop, it becomes a treat. Plus it's supporting the local trade which is so important.

Had a lovely lunch sitting on the verandah overlooking the Let. Food and service top notch
May 2023
Very good fish and chips
June 2022
Although this is a great property in a wonderful place for a holiday, the standard of cleanliness is well below the standards one should expect when paying premium price, the wooden floor needs serious attention as it has ingrained dirt, leaving my crawling grandchild with filthy legs and feet despite my mopping to try and clean it. The vacuum was full of smelly dog hair, the toaster had not been cleaned and neither was the tumble drier which included the previous guests knickers! The internal windows and mirrors all need a thorough clean too! I’m very dissapointed with the standard particularly with the Covid 19 situation and with the response of THC, who seem to think it’s ok!
August 2021
Great fish & chips and ice cream
August 2021
End of July/early August 2021, still only takeaway service. Expensive chips, measly portion and 30 minute wait to takeaway

The Start Bay Inn
(Less than a mile)
(120)
A pretty thatched pub dating back to the 14th century with doors opening onto Slapton Sands beach offering fresh fish and seafood, fresh local produce, real ales and local ciders and friendly service. Sit inside in the cosy bar and restaurant or outside on the patio. Take away fish and chips available.

Always a Friday night treat for our holiday. Fresh fish and local beer. (Chips very "samey" though.)
October 2023
Great Pub, but dogs not allowed in pub, you have to go in cafe side, which is soulless. Luckily The Tower, The Church, The Cricketers , Britannia and many more local pubs do.
October 2023
Love the fact that it never really changes - we have been visiting it on and off whilst on holiday for 30+ years. Great crab sandwiches.
September 2023
Years since we visited but still a brilliant fish and chips in a great location. Highly recommended. Friendly service too.
September 2023
The staff are the friendliest I’ve ever met, even when run off their feet over the bank holiday. The food was well cooked, generous portions, good value for money. So good we went twice.
September 2023
Gorgeous little pub with seating inside and out.
August 2023
Really pleased to see that part of it is now dog-friendly. The salad that used to accompany meal has stopped as it was 'frequently being left' some customers might like the choice. The fish (as always) i fabulous.
August 2023
Great portion sizes for fish.

The best fish and chips I’ve tasted for years. Friendly service. Eat in or out
May 2023
So close to our apartment very buzzy with holidaymakers getting their fish and chips and refreshing drinks. We had their takeaway fish and chips once which wasn't the best. Had a drink in there once and found the chap behind the bar very unwelcoming. Maybe he was having an off day.
May 2023
We had takeaway meals for five people in our party, and the food was well cooked on each of three occasions. Would thoroughly recommend.
April 2023
Had a lovely meal and the staff were very helpful. My steak was a little tough but they refunded half the value which I thought was very fair
April 2023
Great menu with lots of choice, helpful staff and super speedy service
August 2022
Excellent food excellent refreshments and outstanding ice cream
July 2022
Had a great lunch of fish and chips, very friendly staff, good value for money. Be careful of how hot the mushy peas are, all of us burnt our mouths as really hot!!
July 2022
We were lucky to get a table here as it was very full last Thursday night. We all enjoyed fish and chips and it was really delicious. Great that you can have different sized portions for different appetites.
July 2022
Lovely food
June 2022
We ate fish and chips on our first night at Torcross. The fish was fresh and nicely cooked. The chips were a little flacid and overdone. crisper ones would have been better.
June 2022
Excellent service and food. Cheerful staff and always helpful
June 2022
Excellent pub. Excellent food, Excellent service.
June 2022
Delicious fish and chips as always. Lovely atmosphere and perfect position
June 2022
Excellent meal on all 3 occasions. Will visit again when we’re next in Torcross.
May 2022
Still brilliant and good value for money. Quieter since covid and now waitress service for meals and the bar. Like all places a smaller menu choice is now offered but their fish and chips are excellent
May 2022
Lovely pub in a superb location, good choice of fresh food and good beer.
May 2022
Lovely little pub Had take away food which was dry, tasteless and had items missing. To be fair they reimbursed some money but no good when you want a !real with your family!
May 2022
Had two takeaway meals from here, and they were both delicious !
April 2022
Excellent restaurant. Food wonderful. Staff very friendly and efficient. Very good value for money considering the size of the meals. Unless you have a very big appetite be careful what you order. Can recommend all the fish dishes and if you like a steak then the onion rings (3 of them) are the best and biggest we have come across. You will need to book a table here as it gets very busy even in March which is when we visited
March 2022
We had lunch here on 29th October. Delicious. Staff were very kind and let me exit through a staff doorway to avoid some steps that were too steep for me. Portions were very generous. Can’t wait to revisit.
November 2021
Brilliant take away, would normally dine inside however with covid we personally on this occasion did not feel comfortable about dining inside.
November 2021
A cosy pub. Good service and pleasant staff. Would recommend the medium sized cod and chips. Excellent quality at a sensible price.
November 2021
Always good fish and chips, and very generous with the ice-cream!
October 2021
Very friendly staff and good food. We used both the takeaway hatch and had a meal inside. Highly recommend.
October 2021
What lovelly staff offering some of the best sea food meals, all cooked fresh changing daily
October 2021
Just visited for takeaway cod and chips. (No eat in due to COVID) Decent portion, a bit overpriced. Was really looking forward to fish and chips by the sea but a bit disappointing.
September 2021
Fantastic pub, delicious food, always friendly and helpful service. Really enjoyed the old sailors gig night, a great experience
September 2021
Totally Covid friendly, lots of staff so waiting time was kept to a minimum, the food was very tasty and portions ample. Prices were good value, beautiful location.
September 2021
Doing a great trade in take aways: super fish & chips and ales.
August 2021
They were rushed off their feet! The food was nice but took a long time to arrive. A pretty standard menu that could do with a refresh. We got quite tired of fish and chips! Next time would prefer to have a takeaway on the beach rather than eat in.
June 2021
Lovely helpful staff and the ice cream Sunday’s are amazing for £5! All ice cream! No cream filler!! Fab!
May 2021
Excellent take away food, well organised in days immediately after lockdown. Pleasant, helpful, good natured staff, doing their best in difficult circumstances
April 2021
The best fish & chips in the South West! We visit here as often as we can. Great selection of local beers, wine & ciders. Varied menu with generous portion sizes. Plenty of outside seating - the beach is available if the benches are full. Adapted well to new Covid restrictions and staff are welcoming and friendly.
April 2021
Popular beach front takeaway - amazing fish and chips! - Good value for money.
October 2020
We have been coming here for over 30 years & we weren’t disappointed this year. The food, as ever, was wonderful & lots of it! The staff were well geared up to the COVID restrictions & the customer service was great.
October 2020
Great pub although inside was not open due to Covid, but outside was,you could still have a drink , also the fish and chips are still the best, the staff are so lovely too cant do enough for you ,the fact your made so welcome with your dog too is a bonus.
September 2020
Been coming here for years. One of our favourite places. They are very friendly and the food is brilliant. They were brilliant at keeping the Covid rules and consequently we felt very safe. Can't wait to go back in May.
September 2020
Amazing fish and chips! A visit to the Start Bay Inn is always on our holiday to do list.
August 2020
A lovely traditional pub with a great selection of local ales and lagers. We ate here twice and the food was delicious. I opted for the small fish and chips which was more than enough! Never saw the jumbo sized one but I'm sure it would have done 2 people! It was nice to see grilled fresh fish on the specials board too. And a good selection of desserts. A must place to visit if in Torcross!
February 2020
Had dinner here on 1 occasion. Fish excellent, chips awful. Most customers returned plates full of oven chips. Would not return.
October 2019
Best (and biggest - the small is NOT small) fish & chips around. Good value. Polite and courteous staff. Has it's own handy small car park almost right on the beach with gateway leading onto beach
September 2019
Excellent food and drink . Fantastic fish menu .
September 2019
Lovely food but cant take dogs in, which is ok but if it's raining you cant eat outside, maybe a shelter of some kind .
September 2019
A unique experience! Fabulous views from the terrace overlooking the beach and Start Bay. The fish is amazing. The John Dory I had was perfectly cooked and there was a great choice of fish on the specials' board. There is also a good range of food on the menu including burgers, sausages etc for those who don't eat fish. Although a busy venue, the atmosphere is relaxed with some coming out to eat in the evening to those who've strolled in from the beach. Definitely a must for anyone staying locally and a great way to begin our holiday.
June 2019
Would recommend this restaurant specially the fish and chips jumbo size.
June 2019
Ate here once on our holiday but called in most evenings for a drink. Always busy but very friendly. Meal was excellent and served promptly.
June 2019
Lovely fish and chips, would of visited again but can't take dogs inside and was too chilly to sit outside
May 2019
We stayed at Torcross for 7 nights last week and had food here every day. The fish and chips cod/haddock was amazing. We also had a crab platter and smoked fish platter with lovely salad and chunks of bread - delicious. Can not wait to return, the ice creams were also great. My partner had a steak which can be difficult to get to your liking, especially if you like medium rare, but it was perfect. Your missing out if you do not try a meal here.
May 2019
Nice pub and beer but no dogs allowed inside, even extremely well behaved dogs. Fine in nice weather, can sit outside, but in cooler months, not one to visit if you have a dog.
April 2019
The food is good, the view is good and it still manages to be the sort of friendly place that you can have a traditional Pub experience
April 2019
Good ale, the best fish and chips in the Northern Hemisphere!
April 2019
Amazing fish as always! The ideal place to eat after a walk along the beech.
March 2019
Great meal and service for a party of 9.
January 2019
A mixed reaction. A number of us had good food, but one member of our party chose the plaice and ended up with food poisoning. I was not pleased with the 'sexual banter' of the barman also.
January 2019
A nice, cozy little pub. Gets busy but the food is great.
January 2019
I have visited Start Bay Inn many times over the years, I used to live in the area. However the standards have slipped a bit and possibly not my favourite fish and chip restaurant anymore which is a shame. It doesn't help when you hear the staff arguing about work that needs to be done in the kitchen!
December 2018
We had two meals here, staff were accommodating and the food was really beautifully cooked. Would recommend, menu more like an up marker fish and chip shop; but it was packed on a Monday evening. That’s says it all really!
October 2018
we had a very nice lunch here
October 2018
We have visited and eaten at the Start Bay Inn for over 35 years and have never been disappointed-the best fish to be found anywhere.
October 2018
This is a very popular pub and on our visits to the Start Bay Inn one can see why - very good value indeed
October 2018
Nice pub, friendly staff. Shame they had no champagne as it was my birthday, which was a bit disappointing and the steak was very tough. Fish and chips was lovely though, will definitely be back on my next visit.
October 2018
Nice fish and chips, skin in though so kit to all tastes
September 2018
Great pub, friendly and helpful staff and above all excellent food.
August 2018
Delicious fish and chips, good beer, but we waited for more than an hour.
August 2018
Fabulous location, with great food at competitive prices, and very friendly & helpful staff.
July 2018
Good food and very friendly staff
July 2018
Fantastic place - food cracking!!! Even better that they serve up a good gin or two!!! Love the Start Bay Inn
June 2018
Great food just a shame you can’t take dogs inside. Luckily we had good weather & were able to sit outside.
June 2018
Excellent Food love the Fish Specials !!!
June 2018
Friendly place, great take out or eat in food. Good service and beautiful location.
June 2018
This pub was so good we did not bother to eat our main meals anywhere else for the whole two weeks. The fish and chips are the best we have ever eaten- not greasy at all. The choice of fish and the prices could not be beaten. The puddings were delicious also and the portions so generous they needed to be shared.
June 2018
Best fish and chips in Devon!!!!! and brilliant hard working, cheerfull staff.
June 2018
Good food and friendly staff
May 2018
Excellent food ,the best burger and chips I have ever eaten.
May 2018
Fantastic Fish and Chips!!!!
May 2018
A very popular pub. In spite of being very busy our food was excellent and arrived without too much delay. We also ate takeaway fish and chips which were also very good. Only criticism was that there were a few too many chips.
April 2018
Always well worth a visit whenever in the area, have even travelled from Gloucestershire for supper on occasion, I came here as a child with my parent and now take our own children, perfect
April 2018
We love this place! A beautiful thatched pub on the beach that serves the best value and quality fish n chips in the area. We like that the family room is separate from the bar and so our children can enjoy their meal while feeling relaxed and comfortable. Friendly staff, great menu and fantastic value. What's not to like!
April 2018
Staff very friendly and welcoming
November 2017
Excellent pub which we have been visiting for over 30 years and it is consistently good. Being a party of 8 and eating there several times during our stay nearby we sampled most of the fish on the menu. The fish and chips were very good and the grilled fish were excellent especially the Brill. We will be back soon.
October 2017
Great fish & chips in late September. The medium portion was very generous, so goodness only knows how big the extra large would have been ! Also had a great home-made chicken pie. Lovely food and good selection of drinks. Friendly staff. Would recommend to others.
October 2017
Only used once but great fish and chips
September 2017
Fantastic food!!! An absolute must, especially the monk fish tales/fish and chips
September 2017
We had a lovely meal here on our last evening, haddock was delicious and well cooked with tasty better. Was a bit disappointed in the chips they were ok but obviously frozen and cooked up not fresh potatoes. The children loved the deserts! Huge slices of homemade cakes delicious!
September 2017
Lovely fish and chips, puddings to die for! Good value.
August 2017
Yes. Very accommpodating for our large party.
August 2017
Have visited a number of times over the years but was disappointed this year which was a shame as we were staying close by and had hoped to eat there more than once during our holiday. The food was fine, hot and freshly cooked, but not a patch on previous years. We all chose traditional fish and chips and were disappointed by the number of bones found in the fish. In fairness, they do point out on the menu that the fish 'will' contain bones but really there is no need with careful preparation and secondly, the chips, being of the frozen variety, were a let down in terms of texture and flavour. We chose other local eateries for the remainder of our stay.
July 2017
Would not recommend this place at all, just like a bun fight at Butlins ! and the Barman was condercending and rude. One star and that is for the food.
July 2017
The Start Bay Inn is a great pub/restaurant. We used it 4 out of the 7 nights of our stay, twice having takeaway fish & chips and twice eating outside the pub at the tables provided. Excellently kept Otter beers, service excellent too. Prices reflected the location and the fact the fish is fresh and locally sourced. Wish I lived next door to it!
June 2017
Great place to eat and drink. Recommend it.
June 2017
We have been visiting this pub for about 30 years. People are often queuing to get in when the doors open in the evenings so need to be there early, or around 9pm when the early eaters are leaving! The speciality is fish, freshly caught, often in Start Bay. The cod is excellent, available in three sizes and always freshly cooked and served very promptly. Great selection of desserts, very good portions. Beachside location, friendly staff, what else could you ask for?
May 2017
Best fish and chips for a long time. Had large cod and it was huge, can't imagine how big a jumbo is!!
May 2017
Great fish & chips- best to get a take out when the weather is good enough and eat it on the beach. Can be a bit pricey- but it's good!
March 2017
Delicious fish and chips with choice of cod or haddock, plus plenty of specials. A lovely traditional pub. Also have a restaurant for families, so cater for all. Right on the front and guaranteed to be busy during peak holiday times, so go early or late.

June 2023
Visited on a sunny morning in May so quite busy. We were greeted at the entrance, seated inside then left. No menu provided, I had to ask for it. A couple who arrived well after us had their order taken first. We waited for ages. Then discovered there is a half hour hour gap between breakfast orders ending and lunch orders beginning when only cakes are availble, not even a sandwich. Staff were rushed and inattentive, disappointing experience.

As the self proclaimed ‘home of horse riding in the South Hams’, Dittiscombe Equestrian Centre offers horse riding lessons to everyone, whether they’re beginners or seasoned riders. Friendly and professional, they have an indoor school and an outdoor school so you can organise lessons whatever the weather, and you can borrow hats when you’re visiting as well if you don’t have your own. You can opt for private or group lessons, and there are toilets and changing facilities on site as well as plenty of parking. The school is two miles inland from Slapton Sands, so you can also combine your lesson with a trip to the historic D-Day training site and a wander along the beach if you fancy it!

Alex and Emily are wonderfully helpful instructors and the horses excellent schoolmasters. I have had several lessons over the years from them and the standard is consistent. I have learnt loads and will return for more

Start Point Lighthouse
(3 miles)
(10)
My dacshund and I walked along the coastal path . Although Start Point was not open at the time, we were not disappointed, the coastal walk was lovely, as we got nearer to the lighthouse, we stood and watched in amazement at the tuna fish jumping high out of the water. It was spectacular to watch . I would thoroughly recommend.
December 2023
Excellent views, we went when it was closed unfortunately but a great walk for the dogs. You have to pay to park but I think it was only £4
June 2023
Sadly lighthouse was closed due to COVID, however it was still worth a visit for the views and the walk along the headlands. It was awesome, saw lots of seals playing around the rocks. Wear good footwear as a little uneven in places, lots places to sit and enjoy the view. Binoculars are a must. I loved it and I’m not a strong Walker
May 2021
If you can visit on a day when you can take a tour it's well worth it. The staff are knowledgable and make the tour really interesting for children and adults alike. It's a narrow & steep climb in places.
April 2021
Great walk along the coast path from Beesands - fantastic views
October 2020
The msot beatiful stratch of coastline I have walked along for a while. We did a circular walk which included Hallsands, and the lighthouse, and would throughly recommend visiting the lighthouse, if just for the views. Be aware thought, that there are limioted ameneities - only a portacabin loo in the carpark
September 2019
Stunning views from here. Great walk along from the car park, very accessible for all levels of fitness. Visitor centre was closed when we arrived for refurbishment at the end of the season but still worth the walk.
October 2018
Had a really interesting tour at the end of September, which was the highlight of our holiday. Out guide, Mary, was very friendly and informative. Would highly recommend this. Fantastic location and views and very interesting history. Thanks Mary.
October 2017
We really enjoyed our visit. My husband and son had a tour (£5 per adult and under 5's free) and thought it was brilliant. Children under 1.1m's tall can not go on the tour so my younger son and I enjoyed the coastal views which were fantastic.
June 2017
Fantastic walk with wonderful views, you'll find the best beach in the South Hams hear, bit of a walk but it is glorious.
December 2016
Slapton Sands
(Less than a mile)
(30)
A long stretch of beach with spectacular views of the sea stretching into the distance, Slapton Sands is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for good reason. Adjacent to Slapton Ley, a freshwater lake that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and one of the many reasons people come to visit the area, the beach has a history of welcoming families in the summer for long days in the sunshine, building sandcastles, surfing, windsurfing and kayaking. It’s amazing to believe that this peaceful corner of South Devon has its place in military history as in 1943 the beach was taken over by allied forces to use as a rehearsal area for the D-Day landings. However, live ammunition and poor visibility ended in the deaths of more than 700 servicemen, so today there is a stone monument in place for Operation Tiger, as it was called, as well as a Sherman Tank at nearby Torcross. On a more current note, there is a beachside café at Slapton Sands for teas, coffees and other light bites, and there are also toilets nearby. The beach has disabled access, and also allows dogs throughout the year, so it really is fun for everyone and very easy to get to. There is parking nearby and in the summer months from May to September there is lifeguard cover. Last, but not least, a small collection of pubs reside in Torcross for those who are feeling peckish after a long day in the fresh air, or if you have been for a nice walk along the sand!
Lovely coastal walks, especially from Strete Beach cafe to the Village of Strete's Community pub the King's inn where you can refuel with lovely food, drink and the friendly company of staff and customers.
May 2024
Our dog loved this beach and the kiosk cafe was a great addition, especially as it was very cold and windy. Shame about the parking costs.
April 2024
Fab stretch of beach - quite a trek from one end to another, you’ll need a drink from the coffee van at Pilchard Cove or cafes in Torcross! Over the hill from Torcross to bee sands has an amazing view
August 2023
A stunning coastline well worth a visit. If you drive along the coast road from Dartmouth the views are incredible. Slapton Sands is a shingle beach and dog friendly. If the first car park is busy continue further on and the next one is usually quieter, payment required.
July 2023
Visited here out of respect for those who practiced the D-Day landings on this beach. If venturing doen to the sea from the car park please note it was hard getting back up as you sink into the stones, so not so good for those with any mobility issues.
July 2023
Beautiful pebbly beach, water was so clear!
June 2023
Lovely beach with clear blue sea, very small shingle so no good if u have children who want to build a sand castle, also water gets deep very quickly
June 2023
Beautiful quiet unspoilt beach
April 2023
Really interesting history. Great for the children to link back to a Michael Morpurgo story too.
April 2022
loved it
November 2021
Long pebbly beach. Parking right on the front.
September 2021
We visited on a very overcast day with a keen wind blowing, so we did not see the sands at their best. We walked into Slapton and had tea in the church and found a pleasant footpath back to the beach car park, which ran past the nature reserve at Slapton Ley.
September 2021
A beautiful, gentle walk along the side of the nature reserve, if you make it to the turn off to go into Slapton, there is a lovely pub up there, the Queens Arms great gardens, food and friendly staff.
September 2021
Absolutely stunning stretch of beach (non-sandy which we prefer) with miles of space. Beautiful for early morning dog walks with a coffee at the end from the 'cafe on the beach' at Strete Gate picnic area.
May 2021
Walked along the beach and round the Nature reserve whilst staying in Slapton village. Lovely long shingle beach - our dog loved it. Lovely circular walk through the medieval village and back through the Nature reserve and along the beach.
November 2020
Ample parking, nice walk along the beach.
October 2020
Beautiful beach with a stunning sunrise. The sound of the sea on the pebbles is very relaxing. Really clean . No rubbish . Beautiful walks nearby. Nice cafe and restaurants. Dog friendly too.
September 2020
We have had lovely walks along Clapton and the views are stunning
February 2020
If you love the sound of the waves on pebbles this has to be one of the best beaches in the world !
April 2019
A totally unspoilt stretch of beach with wild flowers and wonderfully coloured rocks. We were lucky to be staying on a stones throw away and spent a few happy hours there with our dog watching the locals beach fishing in the evenings - bliss!
August 2018
Lovely walking -
June 2018
Lovely walk for wild flowers, bird watching sea views
May 2018
Clean beach.No plastic.
May 2018
This is certainly a lovely beach and so little rubbish.
April 2018
Really interesting area and good walks along the coast and by the Ley. Generous provision of toilets and parking and a number of places to eat. Would particularly recommend The Start Bay Inn, The Boathouse and Seabreeze Cafe at Torcross. Also very handy that there is a bus should you want to walk one way and get a bus back. Very beautiful and peaceful.
October 2017
Beautiful beach right across from our Cottage
September 2017
Wonderful nature reserve with well signposted walks.
September 2017
Beautiful stretch of shingle beach - dogs allowed all year. Not many facilities - we went to the Strete end of the beach as there is a great little coffee hut there - great coffee and friendly staff.
September 2017
Clapton Sands is beautiful. The rocks are the most beautiful colours, wild flowers abound on the beach, the views in either direction are stunning and it is rarely over crowded. One of the most wonderful areas in the U.K.
May 2017
Great place for a walk along the beach and had some great events for children at Easter. Great fish and chips in the pub at the end on Torcross
April 2017
Beesands
(2 miles)
(45)
Gorgeous coastal walk from South Hallsands to Beesands. Not too strenuous for my mini dacshund. Well worth a visit with rocks / coves at the far end.
December 2023
Lovely relaxing location.
October 2023
Beautiful location with lovely coastal walks in both directions ! 2 very good eating places too !
October 2023
Ideal for walking your dog. Abit difficult to get on beach if you have mobility problems. Sadly not sandy, but dogs loved it
September 2023
Beesands is a lovely place, the beach was Great, definitely worth a visit.
September 2023
Stunning beach, fantastic sunset.
August 2023
Great place for an evening drink - beach not very suitable for children .
August 2023
We stayed for a week in a house opposite the beach in Beesands. The beach is a pebble beach and is very quiet. There is no lifeguard but there are locals there everyday with their boats so I am sure they would let you know if the conditions were unsafe. There is a fish and chip shop/restaurant and 1 pub restaurant - both serving lovely food and offer very friendly service. There is very little nearby so you do need a car to get around. Nearest supermarket was around 20-30 minute car ride away. The kids went in the sea almost every day and had the best time! They wore full wetsuits and water shoes which I thoroughly recommend as it is a pebble beach, and the kids got stung by a jelly fish when they paddled without wetsuits. When the tide was in, or coming in, the kids felt safer as they were in their depth. When the tide is out, there is a ledge which drops quite sharply. I am not a fan of sand so sitting on my camping chair on the pebble beach was bliss for me. We even spotted seals on most days! The locals with their boats didn't seem too friendly but we loved watching them take their boats out and bring them back in again. It was fascinating. I would have loved to ask them more about the beach, tides and coastal erosion but they didn't seem very approachable. However, I do appreciate that they must find tourists a little irritating. I would absolutely go back to Beesands for a holiday. It is my idea of blissful relaxation.
August 2023
Friendly, quiet location and shingle beach. Nice beach walk to Torcross at low tide. Pub/restaurant and Britannia restaurant and takeaway were very good. Very narrow roads to Beesands from turning off main road, but enjoyable holiday
June 2023
Just lovely. Excellent food at Britannia on the beach and they also have an excellent takeaway
May 2023
Great beach.
September 2022
Pebble beach. Sea crystal clear
August 2022
Beautiful location, stunning views!
August 2022
Pleasant place to visit
July 2022
Absolute delight to stay in this quiet little seaside village! Mostly holiday let properties nowadays but still some locals around to talk to about the history of the area. The village is extremely clean including the beach considering it is all dog friendly! Popular with local & travelling anglers mainly at weekends I also fished to some degree every day of our stay. We will be going back soon!
July 2022
Had a lovely walk. Beautiful setting.
June 2022
lovely location, enjoyed many morning walks along the beach, and caught 14 mackerel. The road access is not the best, drive slowly, you cannot do anything else, and hey who's in a rush on holiday
May 2022
Loved Beesands, we stayed in one of the cottages for a week and enjoyed the peace and quiet and strolling along the beach, very dog friendly to!
May 2022
loved it here
November 2021
Gorgeous stretch of beach - we loved finding pebbles to take home! The walks to Torcross and Hallsands and an absolute must for stunning views
October 2021
Lovely clean dog-friendly beach and an easy walk from Clover Cottage and over to Torcross too
September 2021
Lovely quiet and dog friendly beach with good facilities. Good place to walk from to nearby beaches.
July 2021
The actual usable beach is a fair walk from the village ( parking not allowed as the beach fronting the village no longer exists due to flood defences
June 2021
much less busy than most local beaches (because it is shingle) but great for kids above toddler age. lovely walks in both directions, eg to Torcross for chips or to Start Point for views. Easy parking and a good beach shack cafe and take away
June 2021
Nice village on the coast
May 2021

December 2020
14 Beesands is a great property. About 10 feet away from the beach/ sea wall. Pub 20 paces away. Lovely walks on the doorstep. Fabulous sunsets and seals swimming past. Who could ask for more. Well equipped cottage, very comfy beds cosy and warm
October 2020
The most wonderful little fishing village- narrow lanes on approach so drive carefully- but it's worth it. Lovely shingle beach and stunning views across Start Bay. Two great eateries- Britannia and The Cricket Inn are worth a visit. Beesands is just beautiful, I love it there.
September 2020
Amazing location right on the beach. We spent a week in Beesands and found the property to be perfect for our big group - plenty of space for everyone to relax and a very well appointed kitchen. Would highly recommend.
September 2020
Beautiful setting and lovely property decorated to a high standard, well equipped and perfect place for a getaway to peace and quiet. Short distance to the beach. Would definitely return. We had a super weekend at this property celebrating a family birthday
January 2020
Beautiful relaxing place to spend time.
November 2019
Lovely little beach, nice quiet location and free parking a bonus
August 2019
Worth the uphill/downhill walk along the coast path. Lovely spot.
August 2019
Easy to park, good food options. plenty of room for everyone.
August 2019
I love Beesands . The only sad thing is even more people have found out about it, 10 years since my last visit. Sadly the sea has removed the road handy for parking and is gradually eroding the cliff edges. Not as quiet as it used to be but the attractions of two nice eating places have probably increased the footfall.
June 2019
It’s a new look on the outside but the food very much of the same high quality at the Britannia in Beesands. The new ‘shack’ doesn’t really do it justice with a completely renovated contemporary dining room in keeping with the seaside location and beach hut vibe with excellent views of the bay. There seems to be loads more space too and the higher ceiling gives light to the treats being served from the kitchen. Dave and the team in the kitchen maintain their high standards of food preparation and making dishes that look and taste fantastic, the front of house team are equally as attentive making a great relaxed dining experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Britannia so come back if you have been before and see the changes or give it a go if you never have been. ????????
June 2019
I've been coming to Beesands since I was 2 years old (61 now!). Not every year since adulthood but still can't stay away. Its an ideal location for those who want to get away from it all. Its close enough to Kingsbridge and within easy reach of Dartmouth , Salcombe and Brixham. The locals are very friendly and will always be up for a chat. Its almost tempting to keep this little coastal secret to myself!
October 2018
Bit scary driving down to the beach due to the narrow road but worth it when you got there. Had fish and chips and ate them on the tables that were provided while looking out to sea.
September 2018
Had a wonderful meal in the beach cafe .
July 2018
We've been coming to this general area for over 20 years now and have stayed in many of the surrounding villages . This was the first time we'd stayed in Beesands - but we had walked through it on our coastal walks on many, many occasions. We both loved the peaceful charm of the place - secluded , tranquil and away from it all . But unlike Hallsands (next village along) , it does have two places where you can eat ( The cricket Inn and the Britannia0)and they are both very good . The beach is great - shingle - but really uncrowded in June . ( We were lucky with the weather) and on a clear, sunny day - it is quite magical. ( What a shame the water is so freezing cold !!) This stretch of coastline is stunning - and even if you do no other walks - walk over to Hallsands and read about the old village that was washed away in January 1917 - or just drink in the stunning views . I love this part of Devon and it never fails to take my breath away when you stand on the coast path near the lighthouse and look back across Start Bay to Hallsands , Beesands , Torr Cross , and over towards Dartmouth. Wonderful.
June 2018
Beautiful stoney beach with views of Start Point Lighthouse. Tasty fish and chips available, popular pub and public toilets.
June 2018
Lovely place, good food and very dog friendly :-)
March 2018
Britannia Fish - Great fish - always fresh and lovely family run business. A must for anyone who likes eating good fish!
May 2017
Ideal for quiet and peaceful holiday with two good restaurants both of which are dog friendly.
April 2017
North Hallsands
(3 miles)
(7)
Great little beach, my furry companion had the best time here. She couldn't contain her excitement. Amazing for us both watching and listening to the sounds of the sea.
December 2023
Really nice walk from Beesands.
October 2023
Lovely walk from Beesands. Takes about half an hour.
June 2023
lovely beach, I walked through there twice on my way along the coast path, really peaceful, the lost fishermans village is also worth visiting just a short walk from the beach
May 2022
Great walk up to Hallsands, interesting piece of history.
April 2022
Lovely little place, great to take a picnic as no facilities but that's part of its charm. Wonderful views of Start Bay and a great base to walk to Start Point and beyond or to Beesands. Well worth a visit.
September 2020
Gorgeous beach, but be careful if you have a dog that likes to run as our Border Collie got very sore paws on the pebbles.
May 2017
Lannacombe Beach
(4 miles)
(13)
Rugged and unspoiled, Lannacombe is the beach for those looking for total escapism on their South West holiday. Small and perfect for escaping from the summer crowds, it’s one of the best places to visit to simply enjoy the Devon scenery in all its natural glory. There’s a small car park just behind the beach so do get there early in order to guarantee a space, although there is further parking a short walk away if need be. Dogs are welcome at the beach throughout the year and as it offers access to the Coast Path it’s a good idea to combine your visit with a walk to take in the views of sea and countryside, perhaps towards Start Point where there is further parking around 30-40 minutes away on foot. At low tide the beach offers gentle rock pooling so it’s a lovely spot to head to for a quiet afternoon with the family, building sandcastles and eating sandwiches if you remember to bring them. There aren’t any cafes and restaurants immediately on site, so do remember to take anything you need with you, and there aren’t any toilets in the near vicinity either, so that’s worth keeping in mind when you plan your day. If you have been on holidays in Devon and Cornwall before you will also know that you need to watch our for the tide at many of the beaches, including this one in order to avoid disappointment or getting wet, you can pick up a tide timetable at local post offices!
Lovely walk along the coast from Horizons. Beautiful sandy beach
April 2024
Lannacombe is a lovely beach! The beach is gentle and slopes nicely into the sea. We swam in October and it was beautiful. If you haven’t been there are no facilities and only parking for about 8-9 cars so get there early in peak season. It’s on the SW Coast path and we have walked from East Prawle though takes a while. Fabulous beach. Keep it to yourself!
October 2023
Best beach in the area, spent a lovely sunny day here.
September 2023
A favourite beach of us, we spent another lovely afternoon there, superb view and great for rock pooling.
April 2022
Fantastic beach! Secluded and beautiful. Windy narrow lanes to reach it but worth it. We were able to get a car space in the small car park which was great. Our dog loved it and so did we!
October 2021
Best beach in the world! Dont tell anyone or else we will never get one of the 8 parking spaces!
September 2021
Unspoilt and away from the crowds. Perfect secret
August 2021
Beautiful unspoilt beach.
July 2021
We walked here from East Prawle, it was a delightful find and we explored the beach whilst en route along the coastal path. I imagine it would be extremely busy in high season but we were the only ones there so felt very lucky to have found it.
June 2021
Lovely but inaccessible down rough extremely narrow lane with very tiny parking & limited turning , best to walk from Start Point car park
October 2020
Very limited parking (but we got lucky!). Wide, spacious but covered in dense seaweed - what's happened? It never used to be so weedy.
August 2019
Excellent secluded beach once you find it. Signs would be helpful but this would be detrimental as visitors would "flood" the small car park. Well worth visiting and walking along the stunning cliff walks
September 2018
A lovely beach where we enjoy sitting and eating our sandwiches after walking from Start Point.
May 2018
Blackpool Sands
(5 miles)
(36)
Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!
Beautiful beach, clean sparkly water, no litter, great parking, fabulous late lunch in the cafe after a 5 hour drive. We were here for the registration for The Dart SUP challenge.
May 2024
Very nice.
October 2023
This is a lovely place to visit, we went early and had breakfast at the lovely cafe before going onto the beach
September 2023

August 2023

July 2023
Looks a lovely beach but unfortunately no dogs allowed at all
June 2023
Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.
May 2023
we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.
September 2022
We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.
September 2022
Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand
September 2022
It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.
August 2022
A lovely beach, stunning veiw as you drive down towards it. Very clean with clear water.
August 2022
Lovely clean beach although very quiet. There was a small charge for parking.
April 2022
great place
November 2021
very clean beach and gorgeous setting. good that it didn't allow dogs.
September 2021
Welcoming, clean attractive
September 2021
No sand! Very clean and scenic, but very disappointing if you want to run around on sand
August 2021
Lovely pretty beach with good facilities.
June 2021
Very large shingle beach, charges for parking at a set fee no matter how long your visit. Can pay by card for parking as well as cash.
May 2021
Great beach
November 2020
Lovely sandy beach. Parked here (£2) whilst doing a circular walk and then returned for a walk along the beach.
November 2020
Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.
October 2020
Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.
October 2019
One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.
October 2019
Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.
September 2019
We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.
September 2019
Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.
October 2018
Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded
August 2018
Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.
May 2018
Beautiful clean beach with excellent facilities.Clean toilets lovely cafe and shop.Lifeguard on the beach. No dogs allowed.Plenty of parking. We enjoyed rock pooling at the far end of the beach. The owner does a great job.You can also visit Blackpool Sands garden but we did not have time. Also a juggler was there on the day we went great fun for everyone.
August 2017
Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .
August 2017
Perfect venue for a sunny day! Secluded beach which is clean and tidy, with a cafe, snack bar and shop, beach equipment hire too
July 2017
The cost of the parking steep
June 2017
Our family 's favourite beach

May 2017

December 2022
What a glorious getaway! Michelle has literally thought of everything, and she was so lovely and helpful, she ensured we were ok when we arrived and kept the logs topped up for us over a very cold weekend! We absolutely loved it at Woodpecker Cottage, it was so quiet and tranquil, exactly what we needed for a lovely relaxing weekend away. I had booked it as a surprise for my husbands birthday weekend and he was over the moon. It was so cosy and warm, and very well decorated and maintained. Michelle has left no stone unturned, there are even board games and DVD's in the living room. We didn't put the TV on once while we were there, but we did play a board game! I cannot recommend the cottage more highly, just book this wonderful little hideaway and see for yourself! Thank you Michelle for making us feel so welcome, we will definitely be back.

March 2018
I want to say thankyou to Toad Hall for relocating me due to Torcross being inaccessible due to the weather and storms
February 2018
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were looking for somewhere to hole up and really relax away from our busy life. This is the first time, in a long time, that we decided to take our dogs with us. With this in mind we wanted somewhere that could allow us to feel comfortable having the dogs with us. The lounge and kitchen area was designed for this and the bedrooms could be shut off from them. Not a white sofa in sight! Tap outside was a real benefit when they came back from the beach or the woods. Great to have a quick walk in the woods right next to the cottage for first thing in the morning. I have gone on about the dogs but the fact that we were not having to worry about them was so refreshing. The master bedroom bed was unbelievably comfortable and spacious. Lovely big bathroom and good shower. Small woodburning stove was incredibly efficient. The owners were so friendly and gave us all the information we needed to make the most of our stay. Huge number of local pubs and we really liked the SeaBreeze cafe and the cafe at Blackpool Sands. I do hope that we will be able to come back again.

This was our second visit to this lovely cottage and as before was extremely clean and well equipped. The owners are very friendly and easy to get hold of if needed.
July 2017
Had an absolutely brilliant stay at Woodpecker Cottage. The location was ideal. Rural setting but only a 10 minute walk to the village and a 25 minute walk to the beach. This was perfect for us and the dog and meant we didn't have to use the car if we didn't want to. The owners were friendly and were on hand for any problems. The accommodation was clean and bright and had everything we needed. The standard was top notch.

This property is one of the best appointed properties we have stayed in there was nothing we needed that this cottage didn't have, except the sun ...... But that's not their fault!!! Ideal for the dog as the wooden floors make it easy to keep clean of sand and mud. Very quiet location which is just what we wanted. We will be coming back.
October 2015
We had a wonderful stay at Woodpecker Cottage. The cottage was perfect and very quiet. Only to get there was a bit difficult due to the narrow road. Michelle and Steve have been extremely friendly and helpful. Please send our warmest regards to them. To highlight: Excellent shower, comfortable sofas, very good beds, kitchen perfectly equipped, cozy wood burner, quiet and good to sleep and fresh eggs from the owner - and as well the great evening at Gladstonbury Festival :-). November 2013
Michelle and Steve were lovely to deal with and Wilf is a treasure loved the barn can't wait to come again
June 2013
We have had an amazing week in South Devon and could not be happier with our experience - in particular the standard of accommodation and the location of Woodpecker cottage. The setting is peaceful and tranquil yet it is in walking distance to several lovely pubs and other eateries - most of which are also dog friendly. There are two beaches in easy walking distance also. The cottage was perfect for us and our three dogs who were made to feel welcome by the owners rather than simply tolerated as has often been the case at other places we have stayed. We were really sad to leave.
April 2013
We did take a dog with us and I liked the wooded area near to the cottage which allowed me to give the dog a good walk in the morning and evening
November 2012

Lovely farm shop with a wide range of products available and a nice cafe. It was within easy walking distance of Torcross which was great due to the closure of the local shop. The best bit was the adjacent South Hams brewery. With a great selection of locally brewed craft ales and ciders and delicious food available from the cafe next door it was a great way to spend a damp afternoon avoiding Storm Ciara!

June 2017

June 2023

April 2021
Amazing food and customer service.
November 2020
This is a really good cafe that offers all sorts of food & drink. They’ve taken into account all the COVID restrictions so we felt safe. The staff were very helpful.
October 2020
An excellent take away dinner option! Far too good, as we ate from there several times this week!
August 2020
Great for a meal or a snack - the pizzas are Big. Nice inside and outside terrace facing the road, away from the winds off the sea. Very dog friendly.
September 2019
Great venue! Super service and super food.
August 2019
Had lovely fish and chips and ice cream here, we thought the fish and chips were better here than at the Start Bay and the ice cream better than at the other cafe, Sea Breeze.
May 2019
Our favourite place for drinks and food . Very friendly staff Perfect location Highly recommend .
May 2019
We had a lovely lunch here. Service was very good and quick. The restaurant was quiet which probably helped!
May 2019
Nice welcome including our dog. Excellent food, although we did have to wait 40 minutes - lunch time rush, ?. Would recommend.
April 2019
It would be useful to have a menu with prices outside so people could decide if it was expensive as we did.
August 2018
Lovely food, shame it didn’t stay open later than 5pm in the week.
June 2018
Great Food and Drink, wish you were open more evenings, the sharing platters are great !!!

May 2018
Excellent breakfast (although a bit dear!).
October 2017
Had great takeaway fish & chips and sausage and chips in late September. Also a fantastic breakfast on the last day of our holiday. Great views of the sea one side and the Ley the other. Would recommend.
October 2017
Lovely place for meals - expensive for family of 5 and very busy but food was good especially the pizzas. Staff very polite and helpful too.
September 2017
Had a very nice meal here with my wife and daughters. The staff went out of their way to fulfil an unusual food order for picky kids. Some nice beers available too - a great way to spend an hour or so after a hard days walking.
August 2017
Good environment but no wifi and a long wait for our orders.
July 2017
Great place to eat and prices are great. Food is exceptional and we went a few times during our stay.
July 2017
Love this place. Reasonably priced food. Great pizzas, nice fresh seafood and takeaway to enjoy on the beach. Really light and spacious interior too. Looks like it was quite recently refurbed.
July 2017
The Start Bay Inn
(Less than a mile)
(120)
A pretty thatched pub dating back to the 14th century with doors opening onto Slapton Sands beach offering fresh fish and seafood, fresh local produce, real ales and local ciders and friendly service. Sit inside in the cosy bar and restaurant or outside on the patio. Take away fish and chips available.
The Start Bay Inn Torcross, Slapton Sands TQ7 2TQ (T: 01548 580553)
Stayed In Torcross recently and ate three times at the Start Bay Inn. Excellent, friendly and obliging service each time. Tasty food at reasonable prices. Great that we could take the dog into one dining area.
May 2024
Excellent fish & chips and great selection of beer

yummy fish and chips!
October 2023
Love this pub and the fish and chips are amazing best I’ve had 5 stars brilliant atmosphere and great staff
October 2023
August 2023
We tried to book a table several times for a meal. But alas we were told it was a first cone first serve basis. This did not suit us.
August 2023
A true institution serving great food with a warm welcome
August 2023
Excellent food as always, and staff were friendly and brilliant.
July 2023
Just had a drink and peanuts in the Start Bay Inn… friendly helpful staff and a good selection of wine. The Pinot Grigio was very nice…
July 2023
Visited here before going on the beach at slapton and we had a drink and some Cheesy chips (they was the best and food looked good in general that wad coming out to other tables).
July 2023
Friendly and helpful staff, lovely food and nice atmosphere! Really good to have option of take away and patio meals.
June 2023
As always excellent seafood and service. Recommend go early as it does get very busy.
June 2023
Wonderful place. We came here a few times and the food and drink were great and the staff very lovely and helpful.
June 2023
Great for no frills relaxed dining. Fresh scampi is amazing.
June 2023
The restaurant service was good, but if you wanted to eat outside it was classed as a takeaway and the portions were a lot smaller than eating in. Quite expensive for what you get too
June 2023

May 2021
Lovely area and stay

Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .
