Set in a coastal corner of south east England, tucked above the capital, Essex is a county of contrasts. The coastline stretches for over 350 miles, while the traditional English countryside is peppered with ancient castles and historic houses.

If you’re dreaming of a UK beach break, your first thought might not be Essex, but this coastal county has so much to offer. With one of the longest coastlines of any English county, there’s buzzing seaside towns, huge beaches and river estuaries brimming with wildlife. If you’re seeking traditional seaside fun - we’re talking fish and chip takeaways, fun fair rides and maybe even donkeys - make sure to visit Southend-on-Sea, home to the world’s longest pleasure pier! Find pastel-painted beach huts and sandcastle-soft sand at West Mersea or Frinton-on-Sea, and swim in the buoyant Maldon-salt water of the Blackwater Estuary. And nothing beats the simple pleasure of a refreshing coastal walk along the many wetlands and salt marshes, keeping your eyes peeled for rare waterfowl.

Away from the coast, Essex’s countryside is truly English. There are pockets of ancient woodland, including Epping Forest and Dedham Vale AONB, interspersed with stately homes, grand castles and historic towns. Holidays in Essex are a treasure trove for history buffs. Visit Colchester, the oldest recorded town in Britain, explore the ramparts of Hedingham Castle, an imposing square fortress, or marvel at the grand Jacobean mansion of Audley End.

Art lovers will find Essex equally inspiring. Dedham Vale, or ‘Constable Country’ as it's affectionately known, is a must visit. The inspiration for famous painter, John Constable, the stunning landscape encompasses the River Stour and picture-perfect villages.

Dedham Vale, and in fact Essex in general, offers up endless beautiful walks, with rural footpaths and coastal trails. The landscape is relatively flat, making both rambles and bike rides accessible for all.

Despite its vast coastline and unspoilt countryside, Essex is also home to bright lights and vibrant cities. There’s no shortage of shops, places to eat and attractions. There’s everything from shopping centres, spas and theatres, to comedy clubs, music venues and nightclubs. Families will love a trip to Colchester Zoo, while there are indoor adventure centres and leisure centres for rainy days.

For the perfect mix of countryside and coast, history and pop culture, all a stone’s throw from London, plan a holiday in Essex. Whether planning a dog-friendly weekend away or a summer holiday with family and friends, there’s so much to see and do.
