The large village of Lyndhurst is known as the ‘Capital of the New Forest’. The most important property in the village and indeed the forest, is The Queens House, which you can find at the top of the high street. It’s home to the New Forest Verderers’, an ancient organisation dating back to the 13th Century. The Verderers’ sit here, meet in the hall and court to oversee, administer and protect the rights of local commoning practices and conserve the forests landscape. The Queens House is also the local headquarters of the Forestry Commission.

Lyndhurst’s high street is lined with lots of independent shops, cafes and eateries. Our favourites include: ‘Shave Green’, a treasure trove of intriguing vintage and quirky gifts, ornaments, trinkets and collectables. Shoppers can step back in time at ‘The Old Apothecary’, a magical collection of knick-knacks, remedies, oils, soaps and unusual bath time treats with a modern twist. ‘Pages of Lyndhurst’ is best described as an emporium of popular and unusual alcoholic drinks, teas and coffee beans, novelties and gifts with friendly knowledgeable staff. If you have a couple of hundred thousand pounds (preferably more) to spare, pop into the Meridien showroom at the bottom of the high street and take a look at their selection of Ferrari and Maserati cars for sale.

Food and Drink

The Curry Leaf has an excellent reputation for Indian dishes, Italian food lovers should head to The Pergola and for authentic Thai cuisine try the Siam Thai Lounge. For great pub food The Waterloo Arms is a must. Just two miles away in the hamlet of Bank is one of the New Forests best pubs for food, The Oak Inn.

The New Forest Centre can be found in the village centre car park. It’s crammed full of activities, information and what’s on in The New Forest National Park. It offers Visitor Information and houses a gallery and a gift shop. Within the same building is The New Forest Museum, depicting the forest’s rich history, heritage and way of life for its human and animal inhabitants.

The town centre maybe a hive of activity, but Lyndhurst has plenty of green spaces to burn off energy or relax with a book. The Mount and Bolton's Bench to the right as you head out towards Ashurst, is a lovely expanse of grass to fly kites, play rounder’s and enjoy a picnic. Turn right before the Mount on to the Beaulieu road, after a couple of hundred yards you’ll find the village cricket pitch, often surrounded by ponies and donkeys. A lovely place to spend a sunny summer afternoon watching a match.

Other days in Lyndhurst could encompass a bike ride. Trax Bike Hire in the village will deliver bikes to your cottage; or you can pick them up from their shop along with a choice of cycle routes. New Forest Golf Club in Lyndhurst wins rave reviews for its 18 well designed holes and friendly atmosphere. The New Forest Reptile centre is only a mile away; and has enclosures of British reptiles and New Forest Reptile Centreamphibians with lots of information and guides on hand to tell you how they are being conserved in the New Forest.

The pre-Raphaelite church of St Michael and All Angels has a striking 160ft (49m) spire, beautiful stained glass windows and the grave of Alice Liddell, Lewis Carroll's inspiration for Alice in Wonderland.

During the warmer months there’s an open top double decker bus tour with optional audio commentary. There’s a choice of 3 routes, all of which start and finish in Lyndhurst. Tickets are open for the day, so you can jump off at a different village, beach or attraction and catch a later bus back. The Visitor Information Centre has more details.

The Fox & Hounds
(Less than a mile)

(8)

A friendly Georgian pub in Lyndhurst’s thriving high street. It’s often busy with both locals and visitors who come to drink, eat, take part in the quiz nights, events and listen to live bands on Saturday nights. Inside is spacious whilst staying cosy, especially with the log burner glowing on a winter’s day. During warmer months, you can sit outside in the large terraced beer garden.

The Mailmans Arms
(Less than a mile)

(5)

At the end of the high street, Mailmans Arms is a great place for people watching – the pub is next to the Maserati/Ferrari garage! The bar stocks real ales and a nice selection of wines, spirits and beverages. Home-made food is served all day and beautifully presented. Meat is from a local butcher, and vegetables from a greengrocer on the high street. The menu features popular pub classics alongside a daily specials board. There’s a monthly curry night and very popular Sunday carvery. Indoors is a large log fire, and when warm, there’s a choice of outdoor seating to the front of the pub and a beer garden to the rear. A separate TV room shows major sporting events.

A very friendly pub in which we eat twice, enjoying the food both times.

May 2023

The Mailman's Arms is a great pub with friendly staff, delicious cooked food, reasonable prices and the best thing for us was being able to hire one of the pods in the beer garden - we will definitely be returning when next in the New Forest.

April 2022

Found the one way system in and out of the pub totally over the top and unnecessary

October 2021

In these COVID-19 times it’s not great when you receive a glass of wine with the previous persons lipstick visible on the glass.

April 2024

Holly, the host of Renoufs was very knowledgable and gave good recommendations both for wine and cheese. The meal was amazing, we had the Ultimate vegetarian platter for 2 which was enough for us 4 ladies. The ambience was relaxing, price reasonable and will definitely be revisiting. All in all, a great experience! Thanks Holly.

This was a lovely place to visit with a two year old on a very cold day. As well as the displays that you'd expect there is a play, reading and colouring area for small children. The staff were really helpful, especially when Nanna was looking for baby changing facilities and needed help with the lift. Nanna and the two year old also enjoyed a snack in the cafe - again staff were very helpful and the food was tasty! There was also a nice selection of reasonably priced gifts. We're looking forward to visiting again.

Barton on Sea
(11 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

A beautiful shingle beach with pretty painted beach huts, plenty of parking, and excellent coastal walks along Hurst spit to Hurst Castle with clear views of the Isle of Wight and needles. A lovely place to stay. So much to see and do locally and within easy reach.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

June 2023

Lovely quiet location for a beach walk. Great for watching the sea and waves without the crowds.

June 2023

Brilliant beach.

September 2022

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(11 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

We enjoyed are stay - the house was in a quiet area close to the amenities and was beautifully clean

April 2022

The equipment was very good on the whole, except the top rack of the dishwasher doesnt clean mugs properly, despite using different wash programmes and following the instructions provided. The cleanliness would have been good overall (baths, sinks, toilets very clean), but there was substantial pet hair over all the bed linen and sofa and as we have allergies (as stated on the booking form) this was very disappointing and slightly spoilt the holiday. Overall the location and quality of furnishing was excellent, and the kitchen equipment very well stocked.
