Found on the banks of the River Tamar in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, sleepy Calstock has to be Cornwall’s best kept secret.

This friendly rural village in the heart of the Tamar Valley is dominated by the magnificent railway viaduct making Calstock surprisingly well connected to London via Plymouth for any visitors arriving by train. The village itself  is made up of pretty cottages and villas lining narrow streets criss-crossing the steep banks of the Tamar which winds lazily through Calstock on its way to the sea.  The river is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding and the surrounding countryside provides a fabulous playground for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers, making holidays in Calstock ideal for families and lovers of the great outdoors.

Calstock has two great pubs, excellent coffee shops, craft workshops and a thriving arts centre providing theatre, comedy, art exhibitions and live music gigs throughout the year.  And just a mile or two along the river you’ll find Cotehele Estate,  a stunningly beautiful tudor manor house owned by the National Trust along with its restored working watermill, riverside gardens and quay.  Cotehele is home to a huge array of events for all ages from wildlife walks and pond dipping to yoga and heritage days, and it's also a magical spot just to while away a few hours exploring or enjoying a cup of tea in the cafe.

Add to this the fact that the ocean city of Plymouth is just a short drive away providing excellent facilities and access to South Cornwall’s beautiful coastline, the pretty market town of Tavistock with its famous markets and restaurants is easily accessible, and the wild expanses of Dartmoor stretch for miles to the north east and you’ll soon realise that pretty Calstock is the ideal base for your Cornwall holiday.

Parking for two cars beside the property.

There is an EV cable charger to use at additional cost of £30 per week.

Included: Bed linen and towels (no beach towels, so guests are asked to bring their own please), Wi-Fi,  cot, initial supply of logs, electricity and central heating.
Pets:    Up to 3 well behaved dogs welcome, Pet Charge: £30.00 per pet per week.
Beach:  Nearest beach is at Seaton (sandy, and dog-friendly all year round) - 15 miles away.

Cotehele, National Trust
(Less than a mile)

(8)

A Tudor house and estate with delightful collections, a garden and its own quay,  Cotehele was the ancestral home of the Edgcumbe family and is perched high on the hill above the River Tamar.  Decorated with tapestries, armour and lots of original features, the inside is testament to its adoring owners while outside there are formal terraces and a valley garden to get lost in, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote leading down to the river.  It’s peaceful and tranquil and a delightful place to explore while you’re visiting Cornwall, plus they have an excellent restaurant in the 15th century barn, serving homemade cakes, hot soups, wine, ale and lager.

Whitsand Bay
(11 miles)

A 3 mile stretch of perfect sand located between Rame Head and Portwrinkle, this is possibly one of the best beaches in this part of Cornwall. It is worth noting though that there are dangerous rip currents, and although there is lifeguard cover May-September, swimming here can be dangerous.  Access to the beach is via steep cliff paths, unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushcharis from car parks at either end. The easiest access is from the car park near Tregantle Fort leading to Long Sands beach. The other car park is located near Sharrow Point and leads down to Freathy and Tregonhawke Beach.  Dog allowed all year round.

Seaton Beach - Cornwall
(12 miles)

(9)

A spacious, grey sand beach that’s popular with families, Seaton Beach enjoys views across the green, surrounding countryside and walks in Seaton Valley nearby. At low tide the beach stretches all the way from Seaton Beach to Downderry Beach.  There are facilities close by and there is are two car parks as well as road parking, but it does get busy quickly in the summer.  The beach is great for surfing, but do be wary of undercurrents.  There’s also a café and beach shop close by as well.  Dogs are welcome at the beach all year round.

Cleanliness score because of the flies otherwise excellent We all thought the house was lovely and full of character in a fantastic location

Thank you for your high score of the property. We are so sorry that there were some cluster flies to deal with - these can be unpredictable with temperature changes and we appreciate your understanding. The housekeeper has removed them. We are so pleased to hear that you loved the house, the owner will be delighted as she tries hard to provide a first class experience for guests.

September 2023

We absolutely loved the house and gardens. I submitted my (lengthy) review separately and it was overwhelmingly positive. I am already planning a girls weekend away as soon as we can agree on dates!

September 2023

We have just returned from a break at the wonderful Danescombe Valley House and I really don’t know where to start (or end) this review, because we were completely blown away by not only the house, but also the views from the house, the decor, the garden, the range of equipment, the kitchen and the fabulously quirky bar area leading to the terrace. Every room was just ‘wow’ from the moment we walked in. Importantly, when we encountered a small problem, the owner was on it straightaway and sorted it in literally a few minutes, which made us feel very comfortable. The house itself is stunning; its location and the views offered are simply beautiful. Every window and especially the balcony offer a real feast for the eyes. You can’t get a better start to the day than breakfast on the patio with its views over the Tamar estuary and the terraced garden. Then after spending the day exploring the local area it was great to sit on the balcony with a G&T in hand and and watch the world go by. The world in this case being boats of all description, paddle boarders, rowers, walkers, kingfishers, herons and, very occasionally, a car. We sat out there at night too and listened to the owls hooting. The terraced garden is an absolute delight for any keen gardener, or horticulturalist. Not for the faint hearted or anyone unsteady on their feet, you can scale the many stone steps to the different levels and discover not only impressive specimen plants and planting schemes, but also tucked away seating areas where you can enjoy a book, or just take in the beautiful views in complete peace. It’s a fabulous example of what can be done with a super steep garden and contains many hardy tropical plants and trees as well as those native to the area. The herb garden was an unexpected delight. We loved staying here and would say to anyone thinking about booking, ‘Do it now, you won’t regret it!
