Located in the heart of Bideford, within a one-minute stroll of all the shops, cafes and restaurants, is this grade II listed period cottage.  Built in 1800, Diesel’s Den is a cosy, compact and attractive bolt hole sleeping up to 3 guests, making it the perfect choice for either a couple, two friends or indeed a small family to enjoy.

The small, historic port town of Bideford is situated on the estuary of the River Torridge, famed for its lovely old bridge (1 minute walk from Cottage) that links the town to its neighbouring village, and the beautiful countryside and coastline that lies within a stone's throw of the town. Bideford is also well-known for its steep coastline that levels out into some of the finest blue flag sandy beaches in the country including Westwood Ho! just a 10-minute drive from the cottage.

This thriving market town and busy port boasts a wide range of shops, amenities, pubs and restaurants to cater for the needs of visitors of all ages, whilst there are several charming villages nearby that are worth visiting - Appledore, Instow and Clovelly.

Bideford itself is renowned for its New Year's Eve celebrations, where visitors and locals alike don extravagant fancy dress costumes and head to one of the many Inns on the quayside to see in the New Year.  For the energetic, the famous Tarka Trail is one of the countrys longest continuous traffic-free walking and cycling paths and makes use of disused railway tracks – the perfect way to explore the beautiful North Devon Countryside with easy access from the cottage, just 3 minutes across the old Bideford Bridge.

Please note: This property is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with walking difficulties due to the stairs and there being no allocated parking included with the cottage - please contact us to obtain a copy of the access statement for further details.

If you fancy a day out during your stay, nearby attractions include the Northam Burrows Country Park, the Big Sheep Theme Park, and RHS Garden Rosemoor, and of course there are some stunning beaches including Westward Ho! and Saunton Sands.

A holiday cottage in Bideford offers a great base for exploring the picturesque Torridge Estuary and this special part of the North Devon coastline.

There is no allocated parking with the cottage and accordingly it is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with walking difficulties.

The nearest car park is opposite the cottage in Bridge Street car park but this is a short stay car park only so good for unloading on arrival and loading on departure. Obviously with this being a public car park, spaces are available on a first come first served basis.

The nearest long stay car parks are (maximum stay 7 days): Pannier Market (Honestone Street, approx. 275m away) or Clarence Wharf (approx. 500m away, across the Old Bideford Bridge and usually better for spaces), and Riverbank Long Stay (approx. 750m away along the river) - obviously with all of these being public car parks, spaces are available on a first come first served basis and there is no guarantee of a space.

Tourist Permits are available through the Torridge District Council website, current cost is £25 per week (limited to a maximum 14 days (£50) per applicant in any 12 month period) which are valid in all Torridge District Council Car Parks (except Northam Burrows).

Learnt a lot of new stuff, well worth a visit

August 2022

Westward Ho!
(3 miles)

(1)

By the small seaside town of Westward Ho! is a comparatively huge and sandy beach, extending two miles north of the town.  To the north it is is backed by a pebble ridge and behind that is Northam Burrows Country Park.  You can access the beach from a number of places; via steps and a slipway in Westward Ho!, or by the ridge itself.  Dogs are banned from most of the beach from May to September, but they are allowed north of Sandymere all year round.  There are two small car parks by the sea front and plenty of parking behind the beach in Northam Burrows Country Park.  Toilets are available in various locations and there are cafes and shops close by in Westward Ho! itself.  The area is popular with surfers and happily there are lifeguards on hand in the summer months as well.

Packed. Parking difficult. Nothing different or well worth the effort in my opinion

Instow Beach
(3 miles)

A good choice for families, Instow is a pleasant sandy beach with safe swimming protected from swell by sandbanks at the mouth of the Taw estuary.  There’s plenty to do including kayaking and windsurfing and lots of space for children to play.  There are some good café’s to choose from, and the beach is easily accessible with a car park and toilets.  Dogs allowed October to April.

Saunton Sands
(6 miles)

A long straight sandy beach backed by the Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Saunton Sands Beach is popular with surfers and families alike thanks to the long stretch of tantalizing water.  Suited to beginners and intermediate surfers, the waters are comparatively gentle (although obviously you should always be careful), and it is famed for having featured in Robbie Williams’ Angels music video.  Restaurants, cafes, shops and toilets are all within easy reach of the beach, dogs are permitted all year round, and it is the only beach in North Devon to have a Landeez all terrain wheelchair so that everyone can have full enjoyment of it.

Croyde Beach
(9 miles)

Very popular with swimmers and more experienced surfers, and of course sunbathers in the summer months, Croyde Bay is rated as one of the best surfing beaches in the world.  Lifeguards operate from May to September for peace of mind, and there are beautiful rock pools at either end of the beach.  Dogs are allowed on the beach although there are restrictions in summer months, and toilets are close by.  The beach is popular with swimmers, and you can hire equipment for activities such as surfing, fishing and canoeing close by. Restaurants are within easy reach, and you access the beach via a slipway and beach car park with disabled parking, so it’s an extremely welcoming beach for all visitors.

August 2022

Overall a fabulous stay and will be returning in the future. Will recommend to others

May 2022

We really enjoyed the dinky cottage and the owner was very helpful when we enquired about how to put on the central heating. Loved the charming back yard. Overall we were very happy with our stay.

October 2021

We had a lovely stay. You need to book restaurants early if you want a specific restaurant. Number 8 was booked up until January. The Royal Hotel was amazing for food although the drinks were extortionate £8.50 for a glass of wine.

August 2021

It is exactly how described. Clean, efficient and good access to all amenities we needed

July 2021

Expected better

June 2021

Cottage was exceptionally clean.

May 2021

Very easy dealing with Toad Hall - no problems

April 2021

We've had a lovely week here in Diesel's Den! The cottage has everything we needed for a cosy bolt hole. Excellent location for exploring Bideford and the wider area. The weather has been super for us so we have had some nice beach days at Croyde and Saunton Sands. Loved the National Trust walk to Baggy Point and the walk at Brownsham Woods to the coast. Look forward to returning one day soon. Thanks

December 2020

Diesel's Den has been lovingly restored. We loved our stay here and your beautify, easy cottage was a perfect location to explore many places nearby and also Bideford itself. We enjoyed days out at Saunton Sands, Ilfracombe and thoroughly recommend Lynton and Lynmouth; (though its pretty steep) the day we visited and explored the area the cliff train (lift) had its day off! (Both Monday and Friday) but the walk linking the two villages is stunning, as are the villages themselves. Thank you for our stay at your cottage - you've thought of everything. A few bits you could maybe add, are noted on a separate sheet. We will recommend you highly to our friends, Simon, Janice and Harvey Boy (dog).

September 2020

A very enjoyable stay; we'd love to visit again soon.

September 2020

Great base for many beautiful places to visit, all within a 45 minute drive. All amenities on the doorstep.

July 2020

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS COTTAGE!!! Bideford is a great place to be based! Walking - if you do one walk here, follow the coastal path to Appledore. The village and local pub 'The Beaver Inn' are so welcoming. Long Stay Parking - We found the Riverbank Car Park the better option. It is a flat walk along the quay, just a 5-6 minute walk. Food - Mr Chips at the bottom of the road do lovely fish! The Italian at the top of the road have friendly helpful staff and great food!
