NEW PROPERTY for 2024

Did you say sea view?  Then look no further........

Dolphin Cottage in Portmellon occupies the most terrific of waterside positions and there is a sea view from every room including the loo!

This super, one bedroom, end of terrace cottage is set over three floors and provides a lovely space from which to enjoy incredible views of Portmellon.

Portmellon itself boasts a super beach, pub and seasonal snack bar.  The hiring of watersport equipment is also available in Portmellon (during the season) and the beach (thanks to its relatively sheltered position) is great for kayaking and paddle boarding.

A short downhill walk from Dolphin Cottage takes you into the nearby fishing village, Mevagissey.  Here you will find an array of places to eat along with small, independent shops.  The charming harbour area is a pleasant place to sit and watch the comings and goings of the local fishermen bringing in their catch of the day.

Just two miles from Portmellon you will find the villages of Gorran and Gorran Haven.  The beach at Gorran Haven is lovely and well worth a visit.  The Barley Sheaf pub in the little village of Gorran is a firm favourite with visitors and locals alike.

The world renowned visitor attractions -  Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are just 3 and 10 miles from Portmellon respectively.

Entrance/ground floor

Entered from the front, the cosy ground floor comprises of a small sitting room with wood burner.  The comfortable sofa doubles up as a sofa bed and can be used for additional sleeping with a small charge applied if accommodating a 3rd or 4th person in the property - see additional notes section below for pricing information.

Stairs

The first flight of carpeted stairs lead up to the first floor

First floor - living/dining and kitchen

There is a further living area with small SMART TV and dining table with chairs and separate kitchen opposite. The bijou but perfectly formed kitchen has super views from two windows and appliances comprise of a free-standing cooker with ceramic hob and separate grill as well as a slimline dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and fridge/freezer.

Second floor - double bedroom/bathroom WC

A second flight of stairs lead up from the first floor living room to the double bedroom and bathroom WC opposite. The double bedroom has a small quarter wardrobe for hanging clothes, ample drawer space and a wash basin too.

The bathroom WC comprises of a bath with versatile handheld shower attachment that can be wall mounted. There is a basin, heated towel rail and additional wall mounted heater.

Heating

This property is heated via a combination of night store and electric panel heaters as well as the wood burner for supplementary heating if required.

General

Both flights of carpeted stairs in the property are steep but do have rope and grab handles to assist.

Each of the terraced cottages has their own patio area to the front overlooking the beach. There is a bistro table and chairs plus a bench that belongs to Dolphin.  As you would expect with a terrace arrangement of old cottages, guests staying in the cottages have right of way across the frontage of all the cottages.

From the pay and display car park in Portmellon you will walk just a few metres up the hill towards Mevagissey and Dolphin Cottage is the first property on your right at the top with a blue gate.  Approximately ten steps take you down onto the terrace area in front of Dolphin.

Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre
(5 miles)

(1)

An all-weather attraction where children go free, Charlestown Shipwreck Centre takes you back two hundred years, when the area was a tiny fishing village with no harbour.  As trade boomed in nearby St Austell, it became clear that there was need for a proper harbour, and local businessman by the name of Charles Rashleigh set about making plans – hence the name (Charles’ town).  Today the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre charts the history of this corner of Cornwall, including the ship wrecks off the nearby coast.  There are trails, a visual audio theater, the RNLB Amelia which was last stationed at Scarborough, and a German armoured dress diving suit, which was used in the 1920/30's, amongst other pieces of history.  There’s also a Kids’ Corner and plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Interesting for those prepared to engage with the stories presented. Very informative guidebook with plenty to read. The upstairs restaurant was far from great (we just went in for a coffee which was... unpleasant). We would say to ignore the discount which comes with the museum entry ticket and try one of the nearby cafes instead.
