Minstead is an attractive little village, focussed around a picture postcard village green. A perfect base for those who want to experience a traditional village. Surrounded by open forest, fields and walks, visitors often see ponies, donkeys and sometimes the odd pig dawdling along the roads and lanes. The pace of life here maybe serene and tranquil, but you’ll find villagers put on a lovely calendar of events throughout the year - most of which are held in the large Village Hall.

For an excellent meal, something to drink (a fine selection of ales) and popular events calendar, try the Trusty Servant Inn. It’s an outstanding pub on the edge of the village green, with a large sunny beer garden. When the weather turns crisp and chilly you can snuggle up around cosy log fires.

There are some well-known attractions in the village as well. The first being the grave of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes who is buried in 13th Century All Saints Church. It’s an interesting little church and worth popping in. Minstead is also home to the Minstead Study Centre. The centres primary use is for residential children’s experiences, but they also have a calendar of events throughout the year, open to visitors. These include willow workshops, gardening skills, cooking demos, quiz nights and singing. Furzey Gardens should be on your list of places to visit anytime of the year. First planted in 1922, the gardens are now a mature 10 acres of informal and enchanting woodland gardens, featuring plants from around the world. There’s also a gallery, gift and coffee shop.

Had a excellent meal here (good size portions), great service and dog friendly. Big outside area, great for when you have children and dogs with you!

August 2023

Lovely pub in lovely surroundings and the food was great too. Great service. We look forward to going back when we are next on holiday in the New Forest.

May 2023

Great food and service

July 2022

visited for lunch twice and on both occasions had a good pub meal. The menu is varied and different and includes a good range of vegetarian/vegan dishes. They have a large garden although we chose to eat inside as it was cool and the staff and visitors were adhering to wearing masks so we felt safe and our space was respected during our visit.

September 2021

This pub was absolutely amazing. The food for such a varied menu was delicious. We ate here a lot and also had takeaways as their whole menu can be prepared for take away.

September 2021

This pub was quite satisfactory as a pub but would advise that they are not at the present time giving New Forrest Cottage clients a discount. This is probably understandable due to the hard times that the hospitality industry has and is suffering

June 2021

We had an excellent meal here, really superb food. I was also impressed with how the staff were managing Covid procedures to keep everyone safe.

September 2020

We had a really nice meal here during our holiday, the menu offers a good choice & the portion sizes are generous. The pub is cozy & friendly and all the staff were really pleasant & helpful. Do check your bill though - a genuine mistake I’m sure but their calculations left a lot to be desired - quickly sorted though once we pointed it out.

November 2019

Very friendly pub with generous portions of very good food.

The Green Dragon - Brook
(2 miles)

(6)

This beautiful and popular thatched country pub dates back to the 15th Century, and is a favourite haunt for ponies and donkeys to gather. When it’s warm, you can sit outside with a pint of well kept cask ale in the pretty, flower filled garden. During the winter, a real log fire crackles and burns. Food here is really good, and the main menu plus daily specials, take advantage of local produce and fresh fish. Dog friendly.

June 2019

A really nice place to eat and friendly

May 2019

Very welcoming for us and our 2 dogs. Food was lovely and staff were welcoming , typical country pub!

August 2018

After quite a bit of research online for a holiday cottage in the New Forest that has a pub nearby with vegetarian options, we stumbled across Brook and the Green Dragon. On arrival we still had some time to kill before we could get into the cottage, so we tried the Dragon for a late lunch. One look at the menu convinced me already: with not just one or two but three! vegetarian main meal choices, this was the pub for me (or rather us, but my husband eats anything, haha) and might merit more than one visit! And the food did not disappoint - far from! The Halloumi and Roasted Pepper Burger was delicious.I was resolved to go back there for dinner - and we did more than once. The staff gets extra points from us for being consistently very friendly throughout our visits. So, thank you, Dragon - we will be back!

A pretty pub both inside and out. During the summer, sit outside in the large beer garden that has a great children’s play area, including life size tractor. Food at The White Heart is delicious, and well above the usual pub fare, served in big, hearty portions. Expect all the classics plus a few exotic dishes. Indoors, there’s a large fireplace and log burner for chilly days. Dogs welcome.

Visited ast week -was able to take the dog in too - lovely area, lovely staff - well worth a visit. Great example of social enterprise/Minstead Trust. Would visit again.

February 2024

We enjoyed Furzey gardens whilst staying at house for Christmas. The tinsel fairy tree trail was great , did it 3 times just to see if any fairies were at home. We liked the sculptures and quirky art amongst the garden. We will come again in may to see rhododendron in full bloom.

Wonderful for all ages. The autumn colours were marvellous in the late October sunshine and the entertainment for young children was superb.

Bolderwood Deer Sanctury

The wooden viewing platform is just a short distance from the main Bolderwood car park. Adjacent to the car park is a large flat grassy Forest lawn, perfect for kicking a football around or a game of rounders. Bolderwood is one of the most popular spots in the New Forest for spending a sunny day and the area can become a bit congested during the better weather and at holiday times.

Barton on Sea
(12 miles)

(2)

A stony beach with sandy areas as the tide goes out, and a great spot to do some fossil hunting. The cliffs are subject to considerable coastal erosion and at times parts of the beach can be cordoned off. The Beachcomber Café on the cliff top is one of the most popular cafés in the region. Plenty of parking in car parks along the cliff top as well as on-road parking.

A pleasant walk along the cliff top and along the beach. There was less cliff than last time we went to the New Forest.

Highcliffe Beach
Highcliffe Beach
(12 miles)

Highcliffe beach, beneath the popular Cliffhanger Restaurant is a part sandy, part pebble beach. The beach has sloping access as well as steps down to the shore from the pay and display clifftop car park. To the east, Highcliffe beach towards Barton on Sea is a part sandy beach at the foot of the second most eroded cliff in England. This side of the beach is dog-friendly all year. However do check the tide times as high tide can make it difficult to walk along the beach.

To the west towards Highcliffe Castle beach, the promenade leads across the top of the small beaches inbetween the groynes with views across Christchurch Bay and Hengistbury Head. Groynes 4-8 have dog restrictions as does the promenade during the summer months, May-September.

August 2023

Milford on Sea is a very quintessential English village which has retained all its charm. The seafront is a delight to stroll along and The Needles Eye Cafe produces lovely coffee and lunches which is well worth a visit. A walk around Sturt Pond is also enjoyable and through to the village.

Beautiful beach with views to The Isle of Wight. Good for swimming, picnics and walking. Very good car parking and public toilets. Lots of good places to eat and drink either next to the beach or in the village, a short walk away

July 2022

A proper gem. Great location for the new forest. The village is great and was only a short walk from our house. Not too busy or full of holiday makers. We will be back.

October 2021

One of my favourite places

July 2021

Good place to go if you have a buggy or wheelchair as there is a tarmac path along the top of the cliffs with great views of the Needles, plenty of parking and a kiosk serving refreshments.

September 2020

Lovely village with adequate shops on a very pretty green.

September 2019

Due to my husband breaking his leg we hired a mobility scooter for our holiday. It was a joy to ride along the front at Milford. Wonderful views of The Needles and lots of benches along the way too. Great access from the car parks. Would be great if the short path from Milford to Keyhaven could be the same good surface. We felt the rough stones would be too hard to ride on.

June 2019

Love Milford on Sea so old fashioned hasn't changed much since I use go as a child in the 1960/70s

April 2019

great walking area, small cafe-the needles, children climbing play park- crashing waves over stoned beach

Avon Beach

A family friendly beach close to Mudeford and Christchurch Harbour with plenty to do for all.  For those with disabilities or small children there is a beach level carpark, and to keep everyone safe there is a designated bathing area and a seperate area allocated for watersports, all overseen by lifeguards in the summer months.  This pretty sand and shingle beach is backed by trees and countryside and if you fancy some fresh local seafood or simply a coffee, ice cream or a cold drink, the beach is home to the excellent Noisy Lobster, serving breakfast, lunch and supper all year round.

Nice beach with good facilities

April 2023

Beautiful beach, lots of sand for youngsters- definitely been high on our favourites list, for more than 30 years and still is now the 'children' are nearly 30! - well worth the drive from New Forest. The Noisy Lobster is great and now has an 'outdoor upstairs' too. The Beach Cafe, half-way along, is excellent too- used to do very good carrot cake! The connecting beach towards Steamer Point is dog-friendly all year which is a bonus. Walking to the quay end, you can catch the ferry to Hengistbury Head which is beautiful beach too and often quieter (top favourite!) Even this last week (JULY 2021) the 'kids' wanted to crab-fish from Mudeford Quay!!

March 2024

We had a wonderful stay at Furzey House. It was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped. It was a bonus to be able to wander around the gardens and visit the cafe.

February 2024

We had another lovely stay despite the weather and the road closure by Open Reach!!! We hope to return again.

February 2024

We had a great stay, the property was perfect for a family celebration, it was well equipped and spacious. The division of the bedrooms on the top floor was very useful for families with young children, each family had their own space without disturbing the others. Fantastic being next to Furzey gardens, entertainment for the children right on the doorstep. We hope to be able to visit again.

January 2024

My family and I had a very relaxing few days, the property has a calm and welcoming atmosphere. We had plenty of space and lovely walks in the gardens. Totally delightful. 10am was the exiting time and as expected the hours before leaving are very busy and can be stressful particularly in the pouring rain . Therefore I wasn't convinced it was necessary for someone to drive down and park up at 09.10. Whoever it was didn't introduce themselves but sat in the vehicle. Sadly I felt it was an unexpected pressure.

January 2024

Yes very much so. Clean and comfortable, nice and warm. Kitchen very well equipped beds comfortable. Great for our family 2yrs to 90 yes.

November 2023

Perfect location in the garden and easy access to the Forest too. Having the cafe on site was a bonus. Such a spacious house! A perfect location for a family anniversary celebration.

September 2023

Lovely to be resident in such a fabulous garden. Our two granddaughters loved exploring.

September 2023

We enjoyed our stay in spite of the problems. It is an ideal house for a family or other group and being in the gardens is delightful with the play area, room to play and discover - we found 39 of the 42 fairy doors, and had great fun finding them.

August 2023

We had a fabulous time at Furzey House! It is our second time there and we've already booked for next year. The location is amazing and it's great to have the run of the gardens. The house is fabulous - so much room an bbc the kids loved playing hide and seek in there! The Trusty Servant and the New Forest Inn were great for meals out! Already looking forward to returning next year!

August 2023

We had a lovely week in Furzy Gardens enjoyed the gardens and had some great days out. (Exbury Gardens and Railway highly recommended )

April 2023

Wonderful house for 3 generations to holiday together . The gardens just add that extra special touch to what is already a great house. Considering the size of house it has been well maintained and looked after. Lovely and warm and plenty of hot water. Would love to return.

January 2023

We had a fantastic stay - the perfect place to spend our family Christmas. The house was warm, cosy, comfortable and well-equipped. The location is beautiful and we loved the personal touches such as the Christmas decorations throughout the house, , thank you.

September 2022

Despite the items mentioned above we had a fabulous time, plenty of space for a large family and we really enjoyed the gardens. House was beautiful.

August 2022

We had a wonderful time, the house was brilliant and the gardens were fantastic! The house was in a brilliant location too, close to loads of great places to visit and also the coast. We loved it so much we've rebooked for next year!

June 2022

Loved the seclusion, access to Furzey gardens. New beds so comfortable

April 2022

We thoroughly enjoyed our Easter stay at Furzey House. There were 10 of us from three generations, all of whom loved the house and the magnificent Furzey Gardens, beautifully kept by the Minstead Trust. The children were fascinated by the Fairy Doors which added to the spirit of exploration! The nearby walks were enjoyed by all as was the Trusty Servant, a few minutes walk away. The house is very spacious and well equipped (particularly the kitchen). We were thrilled to be welcomed with a large bowl of Easter chocolates, cake and decorations. We hope to return in the future.

March 2022

The house is in a beautiful location and having access to the garden was a real bonus.

January 2022

Yes we had a fantastic time and would definitely look to stay again at some point in the future

December 2021

We did find tv easy to put aerial in. No batteries for remotes. No dishcloths or washing up liquid Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Lovely cottage and would consider booking again

August 2021

We loved our stay! An excellent place for a big family gathering. Would highly recommend

September 2020

Absolutely wonderful week away. Loved loved loved the location and the house was perfect for my family. We will definitely book again to see the beautiful gardens in all seasons -and I'm sure there are more fairy houses to find.

Nice house in nice garden for perfect holidays . Perfect welcome also at the tea room and gift shop .We will come back.

August 2019

Amazing gardens. The grandchildren found 38 fairy doors! Accommodation is understandably a little dated, but overall a wonderful place to stay.

April 2019

A great family cottage. We all enjoyed it tremendously and are certainly planning to return.

November 2018

Loved the location being in the gardens. Had everything we needed and all clean.

October 2018

Great cottage and big enough for the 6 adults and 4 children in our party. A bit quirky in a good way with some rooms a bit big and one or two a little small. The big bonus is having the fabulous Furzey Gardens and its great play area and towers to yourself before visitors arrive and after they leave!

September 2018

Our Golden Wedding with family, other family and friends visited during week, all enjoyed

September 2018

Comfortable property in delightful location. Set in very pleasant garden with direct access to New Forest paths.

September 2018

There was an ongoing problem with wasps which may be beyond your control , similarly the fire doors are extremely heavy, with tight springs, this is dangerous with little fingers around, but again may not be a fixable issue! Maybe a few less religious artefacts as well? These are observations though rather than criticisms. We loved the gardens, especially being able to have them to ourselves after hours! The peace and tranquility was just what was needed for us whilst the open areas and the mystery of the fairies was perfect for our young ones. We hope to return, but out of wasp season next time!

August 2018

Fantastic house for large family party with excellent facilities for all ages, ours ranging between 22 months and 88 years! Fantastic location in furzey gardens. So beautiful and peaceful! We will defiantly come to this property again.

July 2018

We had fantastic weather so hardly sat indoors but if wet and need to be inside the long room could be better for a tv rather than the small lounge area currently used as not enough seating for 10 to watch quite a small tv. We loved the house and hope to return sometime in the future

June 2018

A lovely house in a wonderful garden; we would certainly consider staying here again. Excellent for me - I have limited mobility. Excellent for the children, aged from 18 months to 10 years. The garden is a safe and exciting place to explore; the children loved looking for the fairy doors and exploring the Typhoon Tower etc. Plenty of play space within the house, too. Lovely cream teas on the doordtep! And pleasing to be supporting the Minstead Trust. One small problem: we experienced difficulty with our Ocado delivery for the Friday evening, as we gave directions to Furzey House, whereas it is signposted 'The Retreat'.

August 2017

Excellent holiday home especially if there are young children in the party. Very spacious.
