Linhays, a quintessential thatched Devon cottage, tucked on the side of a hill with views down to the sea at Start Bay, is absolutely charming. Pretty as a picture with a delightful very private garden the cottage is full of character, surprisingly spacious and provides a really welcoming, home-from-home, comfortable and attractive spot from which to explore this stunning area. North Hallsands’ shingle beach is a ten minute walk and from here the South West coastal path begs to be explored with fabulous walks along rugged cliffs that dip into sandy coves offering some of the best scenery in the UK.
Stable door into most attractive kitchen/diner with dining table to seat 6. The fitted kitchen area is very well equipped and has an electric hob, built-under oven, larder fridge and dishwasher. (A utility room in the studio in the garden has an extra fridge, freezer, larder fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer.) Steps up from the kitchen to a lovely room with large picture window overlooking the garden and the views, two chairs and door to the garden. Downstairs shower room with electric shower, WC and basin. Spacious sitting room with an open fireplace inset with a flame effect fire and comfortably furnished with sofas and chairs, TV/DVD player and stereo. Steep stairs from the kitchen/diner to the landing. Double bedroom with 5ft bed and dual aspect windows. Roomy twin room (3ft beds) with fitted cupboard and basin. Children’s room with full size 3ft bunk beds. Steps down to bathroom with bath, hand-held shower attachment, basin, WC and heated towel rail.
The pretty gardens are arranged on three terraces, with lawns and a profusion of plants with winding paths and steps down to the parking area and the lane (the garden is not suitable for todlers). The studio garden room, tucked in a corner, houses garden furniture and a separate utility room. The cottage is alongside a very quiet country lane.

I love this cottage!
We did enjoy our stay, it was our third stay in this characterful cottage in a wonderful setting - we still love it. However this time, the irritating problems with doors in particular and outdated literature as well as no instructions for such as the TV we found frustrating. A lack of attention to detail which is a great shame.
Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed the cottage on the whole. We will look into the maintenance issues and I will go and review the literature on the owners behalf. We do hope to see you again soon. Many thanks, the Toad Hall Team.

Such a wonderful area to visit. Beautiful sandy beaches, Millbay and Wonwell among our favourites, lovely and quiet when we visited. Thoroughly recommend The Fish Shack at Beesands, bring your own wine etc, The Tower at Slapton and Gara Rock. Great places to eat and all so relaxed and welcoming especially if you have dogs. Timed with good weather, a very difficult place to leave!
The location is great, with only a 10 minute stroll to the beach and easy access to the coastal path. The garden and outlook are ideal for sunny summer days. The cottage is full of character, nicely furnished and well equipped - particularly books & DVDs!
Just arrived back from our weeks stay at Linhays. I was honestly so upset to be heading home this morning. A beautiful character filled cottage, with hundreds of books, dvds and cds to entertain you should you have a day of bad weather or if you just feel like 'doing nothing'. When not walking the glorious costal paths (we discovered Great Mattiscombe Sand beach - which truly felt like something out of The Famous Five), my husband and I spent the majority of our days curled up with a book each and a pot of tea, staring out of the sunroom window just admiring the gorgeous view....which even in cold, wet February was simply stunning. SUPER peaceful and quiet - we noticed it with our VERY nervy dog (who barks at the merest mumble of a postman three streets away) settled in within an hour and promptly passed out! Also a great place to view the night sky unintterupted by ambient light. No phone signal or 3G, but I was grateful for the chance to switch off completely. I cannot wait to return!
We loved Linhays and had a really good relaxing holiday. It had everything we needed and the no fuss approach was ideal. It was good to have so much in the way of basics already in place, such as soap, washing up liquid, tea & coffee. Although we brought most things with us, one cannot bring everything so it was good to have this kind of welcome feel when we arrived. The cottage is extremely well equipped with quality items including Spode china. For us it was an ideal holiday venue and we will certainly look to Toad Hall for future holidays
The only gripe we had was that there was no bread knife at the cottage. Apart from that we just adore staying at Linhays. Even on a windy and rainy day you can cosy up in the little conservatory/extension and watch the horizontal rain sweeping across the fields and see the choppy sea in the distance. However, on a sunny day with blue skies, the garden is the most perfect place to be. A little piece of Devon Heaven!
Just a wonderful company to deal with, always helpful and trustworthy discriptions of the properties. We have just returned from the most brilliant stay at Linhays Bickerton and am already thinking about next year! The Collies
We have stayed at many cottages in the south hams, but this was far the best. The cottage is in a beautiful place, 2 minutes walk from the beach and lovely countryside all around you, with breath taking walks. The cottage itself is huge and has everything you need, it also has a little side annex so you can see the sea. The pictures on the website do not do it justice. We took our 4 children and there was lots of space for them to run about, inside and out. The owners have filled the cottage with lots of different books and lots of dvd's. The only snag is there is no mobile phone signal but if you walk down the lane to the beach you can get one there. We would definatley stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone.
