These wonderful places offer up a wealth of coastal walks and are perfect for the four legged member of the family too.

Tintagel and Boscastle are within a half hours drive and taking the passenger ferry from Rock across to the world famous harbour town of Padstow, is a breeze and a definite must do!

One of Cornwall’s most famous holiday destinations, Polzeath has everything you need for a fun filled beachside getaway.

Sheltered by Pentire Point at the mouth of the Camel Estuary and six miles north of Wadebridge, the small seaside village of Polzeath is a haven for families, beach lovers and surfers alike. The village has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants providing everything you need, but the real draw here are the fabulous wide, sheltered sandy beaches. Polzeath Beach (sometimes referred to as Hayle Beach) is a world famous surfing destination, and novices and pro surfers vie for the best waves, sometimes joined by playful seals and dolphins. Although generally a safe beach with RNLI lifeguards on duty throughout the summer season, there can be large waves and currents and families with small children often prefer the quieter waters at New Polzeath Beach, tucked neatly next door.

On either beach you can enjoy sun-soaked days with lots of activities to try, from rock pooling at low tide and building that perfect sand castle to trying your hand at the many watersports on offer. Surfing lessons, SUP, coasteering and kayaking are all available, and there are a number of eateries lining the sand providing much needed refreshments after a day spent on the water. Polzeath Beach is also a nature reserve so whilst soaking up the sun make sure you look out for puffins and many other coastal birds.

For those wanting to stretch their legs and explore the area, the South West Coast Path runs through Polzeath linking the village to Rock and Daymer Bay in one direction, and Pentire Point in the other, taking in glorious coastal scenery and panoramic sea views along the way. Also easily accessible is the picturesque fishing village of Padstow, home to Rick Stein’s family of restaurants and many more tempting restaurants and shops. Either jump in the car or take the more scenic route across the Camel Estuary on the Black Tor ferry from neighbouring Rock.

With so much to see and do for all ages in a truly idyllic setting, it’s easy to see why self catering holidays in Polzeath are so popular.

Lovely looking pub and restaurant. We dined in one of the pods outside which the children loved. Food was very nice. Well worth a visit and we will definitely go back when we are next in the area.

We booked the 2hr sea safari, saw dolphins and tuna and our skipper was very knowledgable about the local area and coves, in between dolphin sightings and cove visits we moved at speed which was very exhilarating. Well worth the price.

Port Quin
(2 miles)

(1)

A rocky beach in a narrow, sheltered cove, Port Quin Beach is close to Port Isaac, and is only accessible at low tide.  Its rugged landscape is beautiful to see, but its location means that it’s largely popular with seasoned walkers and those looking to go snorkeling and kayaking.  Unspoiled and peaceful, it reveals a treasure trove of rock pools when the tide is out, and the nearby village is largely deserted, having once had thriving fishing and mining industries.  Today both the cove and the village are owned by the National Trust and there is a car park courtesy of them in Port Quin.  Dogs are banned between Easter and October, and there aren’t any facilities nearby – it’s all about enjoying the peace and quiet.

Could park nearby and enjoyed a cream tea from the 'Salt Pig' van in the carpark. Paddled here and ran the dog one evening, and walked a bit more of the coast path.

Lovely sandy beach that is patrolled by life guards. Though busy there are several large car parks and plenty of room on the beach for all even when the tide is in. Lots of eateries and a surf school.

One of the few beaches that isn’t dog friendly so we didn’t stop, but it looked nice from the car park

Port Isaac Beach
(3 miles)

(2)

Since the arrival of Doc Martin on the small screen, Port Isaac has soared in popularity, and the pretty little village with the historic harbour, which also serves as the beach, has become instantly recognisable.  Still an active fishing village with crab pots scattered about, the sand stretches between twin piers at low tide and has a small stream and lots of rock pools to explore, so it’s ideal for children.  Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, and as it’s at the centre of the village there’s easy access to shops and all facilities including public toilets.  The car park for the town is a 10-minute walk away, and while there are a couple of parking spaces on the beach itself, just make sure you park above the high water mark, or keep an eagle eye on the tide!

Lovely setting worth a look, dog friendly.

July 2022

Worth a visit, about half a mile walk from the car park, the return journey is quite steep but there is a shuttle taxi for those less able to manage the walk. Beautiful little harbour beach and of course doc Martin’s surgery. We ate in the hotel beer garden, food and drink was nice and reasonable priced.

Port Gaverne
(3 miles)

(3)

A sheltered beach on the north Cornwall coast, Port Gaverne Beach is in a narrow cove just east of Port Isaac.  It’s comprised of sand and shingle with lots of rock pools to explore at low tide.  In the summer months it can get quite busy given the popularity of the location and its suitability for families.  Surrounding walks along the cliff path are delightful and at high tide the beach is favoured by divers.  There’s also a slipway and it’s sometimes used to launch boats because of the easy access from the road.  Thanks to it proximity to Port Isaac half a mile away facilities and restaurants are nearby, and the beach welcomes dogs all year round.  You can also park in the village although there is limited road parking by the beach itself.

Let's tackle the two downsides first. The narrow single track lane descending to the car park ican be challenging at busy times. The other one - the sheltered position means no waves for boarding. Great sandy beach, safe for kids with a good size car park and easy access down to the sands. Great views over the Doom Bar. Easy to walk down to Rock Beach and St Enodoc's church is worth a visit.

April 2024

We had a lovely stay at Lowen Lodge. The property was well presented and clean. The bed ensured we slept well after exploring the nearby walks and coastlines. Just a short drive to Polzeath which could easily be walked (in nicer weather!). We loved the fact there was both a bath and a shower and it all helped us to relax and slow down which was much needed. The whole process from booking to checking in was smooth as well. Easy access to footpaths near the property with only a short walk on some of the busier roads. Ourselves and our pooch really enjoyed our stay and for us Lowen Lodge had everything we needed, the only thing is couldn't deliver was slightly drier weather! If we return that way in the Cornwall we would definitely stay at this property again!

October 2023

Great location, lovely lodge. No toilet paper on arrival but swiftly sorted. Would stay here again.

September 2023

Yes we enjoyed our stay. Excellent quality of furnishing particularly the bed and bathroom. Nice to have an enclosed garden too.

August 2023

Ideal location for exploring all that the area has to offer. The accommodation was of a high standard and we shall certainly return.

August 2023

We had a lovely relaxing time at the cottage ( even though the weather wasn’t very good ) but this did not keep us from exploring this part of Cornwall. A visit to Padstow is a must because that is where you get the Best fish and chips ( at Rick Stein ‘s )It maybe a little pricey but it truly is worth it .

July 2023

Comfortable base to come back to after our enjoyable beach days out!

June 2023

We loved our stay at Lowen Lodge, everything from the location, furnishings and cleanliness was great. The bed was comfortable and I could of soaked in the bath for hours. The lodge is only a short drive from Polzeath, Rock and Padstow but we also travelled to Fowey, Mevagissey and even St.Ives. Lanhydrock House (National Trust) is not too far which has a fabulous house and gardens.I can recommend Pucelli's for a lovely Italian meal and a boat trip on the Jubilee Queen both in Padstow. Thank you also to the owners Ken and Phillippa, particularly Phillippa who showed us around her lovely garden and even gave me some cuttings to take home.
