COULD NOT TAKE THE DOG IN THERE BUT HAD A TAKEAWAY FISH AND CHIPS THERE WHICH WAS OK

July 2023

Lovely quaint little pub with a nice atmosphere and great food. We had a lovely meal here whilst on holiday recently and then some takeaway fish and chips another night. Both were really good and great value for money. The staff are very friendly too. It’s small but very cosy

October 2021

Smashing pub with good food (despite limited choice) and beer.

October 2021

We visited the Dodbrooke Inn one evening and were very impressed. The people were very welcoming and the meals we had were lovely. I had fish and chips which were the best I had had in a long time and my husband had steak which he also said was excellent. They were also very busy doing takeaways. Should we return to the area we would certainly pay another visit.

August 2021

Due to covid lockdown, only take away was available. We had fish and chips. Good quality and a sensible price

May 2021

Haven't eaten here but looks good. Excellent beers

September 2018

Great local pub. Delicious fish and chips and they do take away too! Loved sitting out in the little garden at the back under all the fairy lights.

August 2020

A lovely cafe which tempts you into the building with smells that make your mouth water. Dog friendly and small child friendly with the happiest people serving. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent choice of well prepared vegetarian dishes. Lovely garden. Friendly staff.

Excellent and friendly place to visit for coffee and cake

This is a great spot to enjoy a meal or drink of two if you’re in the area, with plenty of outdoor seating taking full advantage of the glorious views over the estuary.  The acclaimed menu is made up of gourmet pizzas, burgers, seafood and lots more including kids options; and the bar has a great atmosphere in the evenings with live music most Fridays.

January 2024

Stunning location, excellent food, fantastic atmosphere.

September 2023

Fabulous food, great service and a beautiful view

September 2023

Disappointed. Not like how it was in 80s & 90s. Expensive.

September 2023

We love to pop in to the Crabshell in the early evening for a beer and to watch the estuary flowing in and out. We had a delicious pizza too.

July 2023

Popular attraction. Pricey but good food. Very busy on BH weekend in May and had run out of food (except pizza) when we visited. Staff friendly.

Very friendly staff. However, over-priced

Good position for estuary .car park tight for larger vehicles. Had lunch a little pricey . Food good sauces stingy . Suppose paying for the view and position.

September 2022

Lovely

August 2022

Fabulous!! wonderful location, great food and good service.

August 2022

Fantastic place to eat with a great menu and very good quality food and a good selection of local drinks etc. The restaurant is in a prime location as it sits quayside so the views are fantastic and its a great place to site and relax and take in the stunning views all whist eating great food or just having a drink. The only downside is the lack of parking and the parking that is available is very tight and not easily accessible.

August 2022

Expensive

July 2022

Visited once on a Friday evening.Food and service were great.Very busy and crowded.Music from DJ far too loud and some clientele left a lot to be desired, left with food packed to go.

July 2022

The Crabshell was very convenient for us, and we enjoyed a couple of drinks there as the sun was setting

July 2022

NOT AS GOOD AS IT WAS IN THE ALTE 80`S EARLY 90`S. HAS LOST ALL ITS CHARM & CHARACTER. GOURMET CUISEINE ISNT EVERYONES CUP OF TEA AND WAS ON THE EXPENSIVE SIDE

July 2022

L9vely lication excellent service and good food.

June 2022

Lost its Character from the 80's. Not everyone likes their type of menu and plain fpod should be available too. Don't know their Whiskies from their Brandies. Expensive

June 2022

Too posh food. Nothing for those who like simple food. Don't know theirWhiskies from their Brandys. Lost its character from how it was in the 80's

June 2022

Veery expensive. Lost its character. Menu not for everyone , lacks simple meals for those who don't like "posh" food . Asked what Brandy they had and reply was " Jim Beam, Famous Grouse, Jack Daniels" ?

June 2022

Beautiful surroundings. Charming, helpful staff and superb food. Sadly parking is a real issue though. There are probably pay and displays nearby but we had a toddler and a disabled diner. A couple of excellent gins soon sorted it out though!!!!

June 2022

Food was very good. Service was quick and friendly. On some evenings the music was too loud.

June 2022

Nice place in a lovely location to have a drink and something to eat.

June 2022

Fabulous restaurant with challenging tiny car park. Take a small vehicle or walk but worth it!

June 2022

Great seafood and service

June 2022

Food is good, but could be better and is overpriced. Most staff friendly but there are a few who need to smile a bit more. Bar staff were great

June 2022

Excellent fish & chips, first time we've been able to get a table now it's first come first served

June 2022

We have visited the venue many times, never disappoints. Great location, good selection of dishes to cover most peoples dietary requirements. One of our favourite places.

May 2022

Great place to eat and relax

May 2022

Disappointed that the balcony was not open to customers ( staff only! ) We have always enjoyed sitting in the sun up there.Drinks quite costly.

Lovely location for a sundowner at the end of a day overlooking the water. Equally good for dinner - lovely food with friendly staff.

September 2021

If you visit Kingsbridge the Crabshell is a must!! Delicious food, friendly staff and amazing views!!

September 2021

Excellent meal in lovely waterside location.

September 2021

Great food and atmosphere

August 2021

We visited the Crabshell one lunchtime during our weeks holiday and found the service very good and the food we had was good. Having read about their infamous pizzas we decided to have them as takeaways one night. Unfortunately we were not that impressed and thought they were overpriced.

August 2021

Need to book well in advance. Couldn’t get a table 3 weeks in advance but had takeaway pizza. These were of a good standard.

July 2021

Although very busy and unable to pre book tables, we timed our daily visits perfectly (mostly with the tides) and managed to get a table. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, food was amazing too.

July 2021

Unfortunately it was closed when we were there.

July 2021

great for coffees and snacks and paddle boarding facility, but some of the serving staff were very grumpy!!

June 2021

Great place to eat in a great location. Nicola on front of house did a great job trying to find tables for people. Staff were friendly as well.

June 2021

Really lovely food and great prices. The kids loved the pizzas in particular

November 2020

Great location, great service and the freshest fish and chips ever.

October 2020

Location is the primary reason why people visit, as on a sunny day its wonderful to sit outside. The food is good but not great, and slightly overpriced, but I would go again if visiting the area again.

October 2020

Lively place, we sat by the water and watched the tide come in. Nice selection of beers and wine, decent food but dunno why they shut the salad bar at 8.30? Vegans go to bed early, do they?

October 2020

Great food, fab service and nice location

October 2020

Very hit and miss which given the prices isn't really good enough. Crab sandwich served in a brioche bun ? Thin Mac n cheese. Probably give this a miss next time

September 2020

Fabulous views from both outside if the weather is nice and inside, the food is yummy, also we felt the handling of the ever changing rules were handled very well and we felt the cleanliness and safety precautions well thought out, the staff were friendly and very helpful, just wished it was our local pub ....

September 2020

During Covid-19 this place was initially suitably prepared when we arrived & we felt safe inside the restaurant. The food menu was great but no drinks menu- the waitress did not volunteer what was available to drink when we asked & it took us to ask her before she could advise us what was available. Food was largely excellent although several of the mussel shells were closed. The one in and out policy in the toilets was not monitored which meant it was largely ignored & these were not as clean. I think in a pre Covid 19 world, this place would be a fun experience but there seems to be quite a bit of learning required when the place is busy & some instruction on providing either a drinks or wine menu or ensuring staff know is available rather having to extract this through interrogation!

August 2020

enjoyable meal and helpful polite staff

July 2020

Great food and service!

July 2020

Parking is a problem. Limited seating. Food only average for the price. Lovely location adjacent to the river.

October 2019

Friendly and attentive service and generous well cooked dishes in a lively atmosphere.

September 2019

A warm welcome and wonderful food which was a good mixture of the known and the adventurous - something for everyone, even vegetarians!

June 2019

Have been coming here for many years and the food remains of a very high standard.

June 2019

The best meal of our holiday! And we had eaten really well and had some lovely meals. But this was something else. The food was delicious. Full of taste. Vibrant. Different. The staff were friendly, welcoming and knew their stuff.

April 2019

Amazing food and friendly staff. A great atmosphere during the summer months and warm and cosy in winter.

January 2019

Restaurant is in a great location, good seafood and dogs allowed. We had a very nice lunch.

October 2018

Good if you like pizza. On the expensive side compared with other venues

September 2018

Amazing fish platter! Loved this place so much we went twice, second time we had mussels which again were amazing

August 2018

Rubbish customer service! Rang on 2 weekend days and 2 week days. Too busy Friday and Saturday “wouldn’t even bother coming in to wait”was the comment when we telephoned each time to book for 4 on any evening. On one of the weekdays, “I’d struggle to get you even pizzas later”; on the other, “We’re not fully booked but we’re busy so can’t book you in”! Absolutely rubbish! If I could press zero stars, I would!!!

August 2018

tried to book for the Friday night but was told it was fully booked but still come along as walk in customers, we did and got a table about 20 mins later, nightmare trying to get a drink at the bar whilst waiting for the table. The chicken burger was the best. The place is very busy and a lovely atmosphere, would go there again

July 2018

Lovely location but food a bit chaotic! When we visited they had run out of several menu options but didn’t tell us when we were given the menus. Also, when one of the dishes we had ordered arrived it wasn’t as described on the menu but no explanation or apology was given. Expensive for what it was.

July 2018

Lovely place on the waterfront, good food and drinks.

July 2018

Excellent service inside because outside was, as always full, even with an England match on. Food was really good and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We will return next year.

July 2018

Good food, great atmosphere with views over estuary. Very good selection of Gluten free food.

June 2018

Great food. Perfect to sit outside on a summer day

June 2018

Lovely cuppa before and after paddle boarding with Waterborn which is situated next door. Excellent waterfront location and friendly staff.

May 2018

A nice meal here. Great staff and quality food.

March 2018

Fab food and friendly staff

October 2017

Great place. We only stopped for coffee and take out from the Deli but worth a visit. Staff were very friendly and it's very dog friendly.

September 2017

We had a fantastic meal here during a paddle boarding weekend and we were definitely not disappointed. The scallops were cooked to perfection. The place has a great atmosphere as well as great food. We booked in advance which was probably a good idea as it was very busy.

September 2017

Lovely food and staff were very nice and helpful would go again.

September 2017

Lovely food and great atmosphere

May 2017

Loved the pizzas and watching paddle boarders go by.

June 2022

Excellent food and service. Limited choice of beers.

October 2021

Loved The Old Bakery, such a unique setting tucked away, a real gem. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The service was great too. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

August 2021

Very enjoyable meal with interesting menu. Good portion sizes and friendly staff.

July 2021

We enjoyed a Tapas type of meal at the Old Bakery and found the staff helpful and friendly. Food was good and setting was interesting.

June 2021

Always visit The Old Bakery during our annual trips to Kingsbridge and we were not disappointed. They had only been open for a day but service and food were both exceptional. I thoroughly recommend.

May 2021

Wow. Such delicious food and we were made very welcome. So good we went back again the evenings after!

September 2020

Lovely quirky rustic little place to eat (out-of-season limited opening hours otherwise we would have eaten here more than once)! It is called The Old Bakery because that is literally what it is. The ovens and temp gauge are still in situ and the room is probably pretty much as it always has been but lovingly looked after and decorated. Ambient music plays from Sonos speakers to add to the modest atmosphere. (Probably quite busy in high season) Tapas menu, Persian Mediterranean influence. Really nice if you like that sort of thing! We did, it was lovely. Highly recommend a visit or two. Family friendly. Reasonable prices typically £6 to £7.50 per dish. Parking in main pay and display car park just across the road near the water.

November 2019

We had a really lovely meal here. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff very friendly.

September 2019

The Old Bakery becomes a pleasant and friendly tapas style restaurant in the evening, well worth a visit.

September 2019

Nice atmosphere, friendly service and very tasty food with decent size portions but for goodness sake stop serving the souvlaki on slates. I know the trendies say it’s cool but it’s just not hygienic

September 2019

Enjoyed evening at Old Bakery Portions were generous and all very tasty

June 2019

Interesting menu and lovely food and setting.

October 2018

Had a lovely meal in the courtyard. Very friendly service. Good atmosphere and choice of dishes.

The Bakery was a lovely place to eat the lady owner and the staff made you feel welcome and the food was wonderful

July 2018

Amazing food and very good friendly service - we had a meal on a hot sunny evening sitting in their shady courtyard, fantastic!

July 2018

We always try to have an evening meal here and we were not disappointed this time. Extremely tasty food and cheerful and efficient service. Also within walking distance of our holiday property which is always a plus!

July 2018

Decent coffee and, in April, good hot cross buns - in a quirky and friendly environment. A pleasant place to relax.

April 2017

Popped in for breakfast one morning and was pleasantly surprised by this place which is so tucked away. Gorgeous little restaurant, interesting menu and really nice food. Wish we'd found it sooner!

February 2017

Yummy middle eastern inspired menu, great atmosphere and very welcoming staff. Really knew their stuff, we ended going back for breakfast and lunch later in the week.

Harbour House Art Gallery
Harbour House Art Gallery
(Less than a mile)

(3)

Harbour House Centre for Arts and Yoga sits in pride of place in Kingsbridge overlooking the estuary and offers yoga, meditation, Pilates and Tai Chi classes, a vegetarian café and art exhibitions in one beautiful, light filled environment. Friendly, healthy and holistic, they host local artists and a variety of artistic styles, but it’s not merely about observing, it’s about getting involved, so they also have life drawing, painting and arts classes available. The café overlooks the art gallery, adding another dimension to your lunch, but classes are popular, so while you can pop into most exhibitions, it’s a good idea to phone and check availability for classes before you turn up! Had a delicious and relaxing lunch-would certainly return.

September 2019

Great Place for Great Art with an ever changing selection of exhibitions. It seems to be the beating heart of Kingsbridge.

June 2019

A decent enough café, with reasonable coffee and a pleasant ambience, alongside a local art gallery with (when we visited) an eclectic mix of art and artifacts. And if you're into yoga, my guess is that any type of yoga you can imagine is available here. If the weather's nice, the rear courtyard garden is quite pleasant, too.

An integral part of our holiday, er always treat the ferry as a miniature cruise.

October 2023

We caught the ferry twice, firstly in the sunshine, and we enjoyed the scenery, we caught the bus back too which was very easy. The second time it was a bit chilly so the lovely lady on the boat gave us a cosy blanket for the journey. It’s good not to have to park in Salcombe too.

July 2023

Fabulous but a bit on the pricey side

August 2022

First time on this new ferry, had been on old one several times.Did not disappoint.Crew were pleasant, informative and spent time talking with everyone.

July 2022

Great trip

July 2022

GREAT BOAT AND FRIENDLY STAFF . NOT ENOUGH CREEK ETC CRUISES. WAS EXPENSIVE £11 FOR ONE WAY

July 2022

A must for first timers to the area in particular but we have been coming for many years and still do the trip. Pretty ride and the couple operating it were very friendly and helpful, particularly helping my husband on and off the boat. Bit pricey but we went down on the boat and back on our free bus passes so we weren’t really restricted on ferry times

June 2022

Lovely but expensive. Lacked Creek Cruises, during our stay. Only 2 were on offer.

June 2022

Lovely trip down to Salcombe. Louise was a very good host and had lots of useful information

June 2022

Excellent service to Salcombe. It was a lovely way to travel to Salcombe- without the traffuc! We got the bus back as the tide wasn’t in again until much later, but that was very easy too.

June 2022

Excellent if rather breezy return from Salcombe. Would definitely use again when we visit next June

South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Walks and Trails
South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Walks and Trails
(Less than a mile)

(13)

We have said it before and we will say it again, the reason South Devon attracts so many visitors and captures their hearts is because it really is a phenomenally beautiful part of the world, and as such is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in many areas. So walking is a great pleasure when you’re on holiday here, especially as there are over 40 routes in the AONB itself, ranging in length from two to 12 miles. They are a wonderful opportunity to explore the wildlife, archaeology and history of South Devon, as well as the views and scenery along the way.

Beautiful walks everywhere with stunning views along the coastal path

September 2023

Lots of places to access coastal path. We joined it from Start point and visited the lighthouse.

July 2023

Stunning array of various walks around the area - consult the web site for some easy to follow routes. Very steep in places but the scenery is worth it.

October 2021

Stunning scenery and beautiful, sometimes challenging hikes on the coast path stretches. I was very lucky I had gorgeous weather.

September 2021

Wonderful walk in the sunshine along the coastal path from Garra Rock to Mill Bay. Well signposted. The road to Garra Rock is not for the fainthearted!

September 2021

Fantastic circular walk from East Portlemouth (catch the water taxi first from Salcombe) then follow the coastal path through woods and out on to stunning cliff top views for two miles until you reach Gara Rock Hotel which is something special then take the shorter return walk downhill through the woods.

July 2021

The coastal paths are wonderful.

July 2021

Bantham to Thurlestone Walk is lovely. Also the walk out to the lighthouse would recommend!

October 2020

Our apartment owners recommended Bolberry Down as somewhere to park ( NT Car Park) and enjoy the super views, even in the rain. It proved to be an excellent suggestion and we found paths from the Car Park that were easy to walk as well as the Oceans Restaurant which was good apart from not offering their sandwich menu during Sunday Lunch.

October 2019

Whether you want a strenuous walk or a gentle stroll there are wonderful coastal and countryside walks in this area of Devon.

September 2019

Visit to the East Soar walkers hut with its self service cream tea is a must as part of a circular work in that area

September 2018

Outstanding restaurant. Have ben using it since 2005 and always book beforehand to ensure a table. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. Ready to book for next year.

We really enjoyed this as first timers. The teaching session was excellent and gave us basic paddle boarding skills and the confidence to hire out boards again at South Milton Sands during our stay.

August 2022

First time I had tried paddleboarding.Equipment and instructor were first class.Really enjoyed it so much that I tried my skills out later on in my holiday and am a convert, now planning more.

July 2022

Excellent tuition from Kate and very enjoyable

June 2022

Went here as a family of five and had a great time paddle boarding.Well looked after by Crispin and Steve. Great fun as well once you sort your wobbly legs out.

June 2021

My Son & I had a great time taking part in this for the 1st time. Crispin was very caring, patient and a brilliant instructor. It poured of rain but it remained warm despite the early start! This did not dampen our enthusiasm & Crispin did offer to curtail the 1 of the 2 hours and refund us but we were enjoying ourselves far too much! We both ended up in the estuary for a swim anyway! Absolutely brilliant 2 hours & highly recommended.

August 2020

Our two hour early morning session was absolutely brilliant, thank you Crispin, we'll be back!

August 2019

Fantastic early morning session with Crispin - got us two oldies up on our feet paddling around the Kingsbridge estuary - what a fabulous way to start the day. Five star - would like to do it again.

May 2018

Very enjoyable - will definitely do it again. Crispin was very helpful.

September 2017

Thank you Crispin for a fab family lesson introducing us and our 3 girls to paddle boarding

Sunny Cove
Sunny Cove
(4 miles)

(7)

Accessed either by boat, via a 10-minute walk through the woods from parking at Mill Bay, or a stroll from the Salcombe to East Portlemouth Ferry, Sunny Cove is a sandy beach which, as you might expect, catches the sun throughout the day, weather pending. It’s on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary opposite North Sands beach and Fort Charles, the ruined fortification that was originally constructed during the reign of Henry VIII to defend the Kingsbridge Estuary against French and Spanish Pirates. It’s a relatively gentle spot for swimming and ideal for picnics, lazy summer afternoons, and reaching on kayaks and paddle boards from other nearby beaches as well as being the perfect spot for building sandcastles. That said, the tide can come in quite quickly so make sure you don’t get caught out and be careful of the swell when bringing boats into the beach. Head there for the day in the summer or as a stop off en route to the café at Gara Rock or a longer walk along the coast path towards Prawle Point. Dogs are welcome all year round but keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities in the immediate vicinity (it would be a 10-15-minute walk along wooded footpaths) so take your sandwiches with you!

Gorgeous, quiet and very clean beach.

June 2023

Stunning bay ,Quiet and secluded

October 2021

Lovely little beach worth the walk or paddle!

July 2021

We didn’t know about this. Whilst appreciating the need to keep things to a minimum, local information like this could have been uploaded digitally. We made 2 attempts to locate a beach without success.

October 2020

The beach and the views were superb

September 2019

A nice sandy beach, crowded on a sunny day. but access quite tricky - a long walk for children if no room in the NT car park, and then a long walk back afterwards.

August 2019

Best reached by direct boat access but easy enough walk from ferry or mill bay car park. Our favourite beach.

August 2018

Mill Bay
(4 miles)

(29)

A sandy beach on the East Portlemouth side of the Salcombe Estuary, at low tide Mill Bay stretches all the way up the coastline to East Portlemouth beach. It has the most wonderful view of Salcombe itself and is popular with everyone, especially families, because of the large swathes of sand on which you can set up camp for the day and enjoy safe, clean swimming conditions. Parking is limited, so the best way to get to it is either by boat or by catching the East Portlemouth Ferry from Salcombe and strolling along. That way you can also nip past The Venus Café by the slipway to pick ice creams, sandwiches and refreshments before settling in for the day. There are rock pools to explore, sandcastles to build and swimming to be done, just make sure you’re careful of any boats coming in and out of the beach. Dogs are welcome at Mill Bay all year round, and it makes an excellent spot to run around with them whatever time of the year. Like the other beaches along this stretch of coast, Mill Bay makes for an ideal place to spend the day right into the evening, although it is a little stroll to the nearest facilities. It’s also a lovely beach to meander across en route towards Gara Rock or on a longer walk along the coast path.

July 2023

Lovely clean beach with great views

May 2023

July 2022

Bit of a walk but well worth it - spacious beach, fabulous views and shallow waters.

June 2022

Brilliant beach 3 miles from the cottage

June 2022

Gorgeous little Bay close to where we were staying our dog. Loved fetching his ball in and out the water. Very pretty spot.

April 2022

Lovely beach and you can walk to Gara rock from here and along beach to the ferry crossing to salcombe

March 2022

Great beach. Bumpy access road as sand has blown across it. Slightly marred by 1-2 selfish dog owners who have left their calling cards

November 2021

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on this beautiful beach. Fabulous place ??

September 2021

Fantastic beach one of the best in the area. Have to get to car park (National Trust) very early if you don't want to carry all your stuff to the beach.

September 2021

We attempted to drive to Mill Bay car park- not a good idea in August! No parking spaces, no turning points. We tried another day, parking at Gara Rock and asking down the bridle path. We have a disabled granddaughter, the walk down was manageable but the return walk was much more difficult. Beautiful beach and worth the walk.

September 2021

Lovely, clean, sandy beach in wonderful location with beautiful views and easy access from Salcombe via the East Portlemouth ferry.

August 2021

Lovely beach, clear water

July 2021

Lovely beach for children to play on.

June 2021

Favourite beach going back to my childhood. The road to it was closed due to a land slip in January. Talked to the workmen who said it was due to reopen November 2020.

October 2020

Lovely beach but this year overrun with people arriving by motor boat- so it felt a little worrying for kids to swim out among them,(and frankly it spoilt the view) and engine noise/fumes at the end of the day as everyone left!

September 2020

Wonderful

September 2019

I endorse all of the other favourable comments and emphasise the urgent need to make the lavatories hygienic. In fact all of the public conveniences are anything but convenient.

September 2019

Lovely beach, handy to have little food caravan selling crepes, drinks and ice cream, good quality too. The toilets were disgusting though and should have been cleaned more regularly, also waste bins overflowing.

August 2019

Great place for a day on the beach. Safe and dog friendly

August 2019

Lovely large sandy beach, perfect for young children who want to play in the strem and build dams, or play in the sea without large waves!

July 2019

Great beach

October 2018

A fabulous beach. Especially great fun at low tide for a water loving Labrador. We enjoyed our visits here. We also loved the passenger ferry from here to Salcombe. Beautiful beach.

October 2018

Beautiful beach lovely and clean. Small car park free to N.T. members. Highly recommended. Drawback no immediate café available. Venus café nearest but a trek if not mobile.

September 2018

Lovely beach well worth a visit. Dog friendly as well. Well worth the £7-50 national trust car parking fee.

July 2018

amazing beach, dog friendly, only downside is the toilets near the National Trust hut are very poor

July 2018

North Sands
North Sands, Salcombe
(4 miles)

(17)

The first beach as you walk along the Cliff Road out of Salcombe, North Sands sits in a valley and is a sandy horseshoe shaped beach that’s expansive at low tide. Thanks to its shape and location, it’s extremely popular in the summer because there’s plenty of space to set up camp for the day with buckets, spades and fishing nets in tow for avid marine biologists and sand castle connoisseurs. The beach has a fresh water stream running through it from the top of the valley, which, aside from providing hours of entertainment for accompanying dogs and a marvellous place to wash the sand off your feet, also means that the beach is largely wet sand, so don’t forget to take something to sit on if you’re heading there for the day. Popular with swimmers, despite the chilly water, North Sands provides a wonderful view out of the mouth of the Salcombe estuary and into the deep blue yonder so, for keen photographers, it’s ideal. If the weather is right then it’s a favourite amongst body boarders or even surfers on choppier days, and it’s a great place to take the paddle boards and kayaks if you happen to have them. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, unlike many of the beaches in the area, there are toilets over the road and there’s a car park with charges from £1 throughout the year. The cherry on top of this beautiful location is The Winking Prawn café and restaurant that’s right next to the beach. Open all year round they serve everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner to coffee, tea and cake, and in the summer they provide a barbecue in the garden overlooking the sea. It is popular though so leave a little time to queue for that Salcombe Dairy honeycomb ice cream in the height of summer!

October 2023

Very nice beach. Very clean.

July 2023

Swim here daily when in Salcombe.

June 2023

A great dog friendly beach. Check the tide times, go at low tide, makes a fabulous beach to look for shells, relax in the sun, and walk in the stuff with your dog.

May 2023

Excellent beach for dogs

May 2023

Nice beach it's great dog friendly beach

May 2023

What a beautiful place to walk to along Coast Road from Salcombe town. The view through the trees to the amazing colour of the water is breathtaking and North Sands is spectacular. We could have sat just people watching all day. The winking prawn is a lovely place for a drink or bite to eat.

July 2022

Lovely beach which is a quick walk down from the property, food and toilets but neither used.

South Sands
South Sands, Salcombe
(5 miles)

(6)

Over a (rather large) hill along the road from North Sands and around a 30-minute walk from the centre of Salcombe, South Sands is a sandy beach, with a stream running through it, that’s particularly geared up for water sports. South Sands is also accessible from the centre of Salcombe by the South Sands Ferry, a merry looking yellow, blue and red boat that takes around 15 minutes at a cost of £3.60 per adult and £2.60 for children over the age of three. You’re then greeted at the beach by a sea tractor to take you onto the dry sand, where you will find the South Sands Hotel as well as the enchanting Bo’s Beach Café. The beach café is a family run business serving all the necessities for a day on the sand including tea, cake, coffee and light lunches as well as beach essentials and toys. It runs in conjunction with Sea Kayak Salcombe who provide kayak and paddle board rental and tours for all levels. During the Salcombe Town Regatta, South Sands also plays host to the annual sandcastle competition, an illustrious occasion that welcomes all participants with enthusiasm, so make sure you keep an eye out if you’re a budding architect or artist, or potter along and take a look at the local and visiting handiwork if you’re more of a spectator. It’s worth noting that there’s limited parking at South Sands so it’s a good idea to either walk to it, park at North Sands a short walk away, or park in Salcombe and catch the ferry over. Dogs are also welcome at South Sands.

Bit too far to cycle from centre of Salcombe for a swim, but do visit regularly. Used to stay at Bolt Head when it was an hotel, so remember it fondly.

June 2023

The new Harbour hotel at South Sands has wonderful views over the estuary and is worth stopping there for a quick lunch before continuing up to the overbecks

April 2023

North Sands better for beach but South Sands cafe and tractor/ferry are great.

June 2022

Rude staff on ferry - expecting people to wear mask on an outdoor boat trip ! Made to feel like we were an inconvenience- very poor.

August 2021

Great - kids loved the big building Site

August 2020

A beautiful sandy beach that is superb for children as you have to go out quite a way before the water gets deep. Water sports available. Access is via very narrow lanes so be prepared to reverse and parking is very limited.

July 2017

Gara Rock Beach
Gara Rock Beach
(5 miles)

(12)

A short ferry ride over the estuary from Salcombe to East Portlemouth, followed by a scenic walk along the coast (around 40 minutes depending on how speedy you are), will lead you to a dramatic headland and beach café known as Gara Rock. With panoramic views of the sea, the café is open for teas, cakes, lunch, and afternoon tea before you descend to Gara Rock Beach below. The beach is a sandy cove flanked by rocks, and can also be reached by parking at the Mill Bay car park which is around two miles away on foot. The beauty of this beach is that it is only accessible either on foot or by boat, so it does have a wonderful sense of escapism alongside its rugged splendour. Although it is a little bit of a climb back up to the café, the proximity of food and toilets means that you can set up camp here for most of the day, dipping into the water as and when you choose if the weather is warm enough. Alternatively, it’s the perfect place for a pit stop if you’re spending the day walking along the coast path towards Prawle Point and Dartmouth beyond. Dogs are allowed on the beach but not in high season, so keep that in mind, and while it’s a slightly tricky beach to get to it’s worth the effort… maybe just see if you can get a takeaway brownie and a cup of tea from the café to keep you going!

September 2021

Superb location, excellent service. We were unable to book beforehand but were fortunate to be able to secure a table.

September 2021

Beautiful sandy and pebbly cove... we spent 2 gorgeous days there with our dog! Be prepared for steep climb back to Gara Rock restaurant but worth it!

July 2021

After driving an hour through Devon drizzle we were not impressed to be turned away because we weren't guests. "or you can sit outside and have coffee from the Garavan". Lesson learned: Don't go unless you're booked.

October 2020

We had a beautiful meal with stunning views at Gara Rock. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was divine. We also had spa treatments for the group, who left feeling relaxed and radiant.

September 2020

Lovely secluded beach, dog friendly and easy to get to.

July 2020

Go there for the coastal walk. Fantastic. Stop at the hotel for a coffee, the views are stunning

September 2019

A lovely beach (although quite "weedy"), almost deserted the morning we were there, and well worth the tricky path down and the steep climb back

August 2019

My favourite beach in the country, nothing run of the mill here, lovely views

July 2019

Lovely beach. We arrived early after a steep walk down the cliff path. Had the beach initially to ourselves! Starts to get busier as the day goes on.
