A destination for keen sailors, fishermen and artists alike, the tranquil location of Dittisham is hard to beat. This attractive riverside village nestles on the banks of the serene River Dart, and benefits from a couple of pubs and the wonderful waterside Anchor Stone Café

The pontoon is a popular place for kids and families to relax and have a go at crabbing. This favourite holiday activity inevitably results in shrieks of delight as the cranky crustaceans are admired and compared whilst their captors try not to get nipped! Our top tip for crabbing success is to bait your line with little bits of bacon which crabs seem to find irresistible.

Directly opposite Dittisham, and just a short ferry ride across the river is Greenway House, once the holiday home of the famous crime author, Agatha Christie. The house along with its stunning river bank gardens are open to the public, and definitely worth a visit. Dogs are very welcome too, in the gardens on a short lead. This stretch of river has seen plenty of historic vessels pass by over the centuries, with tales from Viking long boats exploring the waters to American landing craft rolling past during the 2nd World War.

A variety of locally grown sweet plum, the 'Ditsum plum' was named after the village. You might spot some in the orchards over the summer months, or if you are lucky you might even get to taste some. They are sweet eating plums particularly good in jam – perfect for a Dittisham twist on a Devon cream tea!

The market town of Totnes and the waterfront town of Dartmouth are close to Dittisham, both with plentiful shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. The towns also have supermarkets, handy for stocking up on your weekly shop.

There are also numerous beaches close to Dittisham. We recommend driving the breathtaking coast road from Dartmouth towards Torcross and stop off at Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands on your way. You can also hire boats and have sailing lessons from the Dittisham’s pontoon, so whether you’re a complete beginner or an established sea dog you’re sure to be tempted onto the water during your holidays.

A holiday cottage in Dittisham makes a great base for exploring the beautiful River Dart and the stunning stretch of coastline around Dartmouth.

Parking for two small/medium sized vehicles or one large vehicle.

  • Included: Duvets, pillows, bed linen, towels (guests will need to bring their own dog and beach towels), water, electricity, washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board. This property has no shaving socket.

Excellent local pub. Food good & generous. Friendly staff

May 2023

The food was absolutely delicious. Every single one of us enjoyed our meal and it was good size portions too. Food took a little long to come out but there is a playground to entertain children if they get unsettled by the wait. Would recommend

September 2022

Beautiful views from the garden, food was absolutely incredible and staff were so so lovely. Highly recommend this pub.

August 2022

June 2022

Lovely staff, great food nearest to chalet so very convenient

June 2021

Looks austere from the roadside but don't let that put you off. The pub has put a lot of effort into providing a covered and warm outside space, proper pub meals at reasonable pub prices, large portions, friendly service, separate smoking area and dogs are welcome. Would definitely recommend.

May 2021

Good breakfast. Good service

September 2020

A carvery on a monday night........brilliant. The meat was succulent and the veg etc was hot. Well done.

July 2019

Great carvery at the weekend and good value.

April 2019

The Sportsman's Arms had been recommended to us by a previous guest - we were not disappointed! The food was excellent, and there's plenty of choice from the main menu, as well as many more choices from the daily specials board. All staff were very friendly. Efficient and attentive service. Definitely recommend.

I cannot believe these reviews. We were in Dittisham I believe the 4th of October. We went in the Red Lion after a steep walk and were rather tired .It was a joy just to see an inn and village shop and post office all in one.We ordered a drink and asked about food ,the young lady explained that the kitchen was closed but then the manager came out and offered to cook for us and we had sausage mash carrots and peas.Others then came in and had soup etc .We were very impressed at such kindness and good service, especially as yes they had the builders in.but no complaints from us .

October 2023

Really awful. The two ladies who run it are rude and arrogant. Don't expect a warm welcome. The toilets are filthy, the lounge is passible. Not recommended at all.

October 2023

Used takeaway dinner service ....prompt and efficient preparation of meals at short notice and tasty food

September 2023

A real community pub, post office and shop. Slightly eccentric but well worth a visit

May 2023

Heard some bad reviews about the Red Lion but found it to be a great pub with good food and an excellent well stocked shop. Also is a Post Office. Can collect warm croissants in the morning, have breakfast there, order bread.

August 2022

Not great. Dirty and not an option to eat in as menu so limited

August 2022

Fabulous quirky pub/shop/cafe at the top of the village. Staff really friendly and helpful, fabulous Dartmoor Legend ale. Well stocked shop - a bit of everything, and even hand-dived scallops in the freezer I noticed.

October 2021

Fantastic as a local pub, great food with lovely views on the terrace at the back …… but even better as a local shop …….everything you could need for self catering with fresh produce daily.

July 2021

Could not work our if closed or open? walked past one night and people sat inside, the next night door locked? A sign on the door may have been helpful.

June 2021

Very busy pub, but perfect for families with good play area. Food excellent

June 2021

Welcoming pub run by two ladies. Also the village shop. We strongly recommend that you support them during your stay. The view from their terrace is (almost) as good as the one from the Dower House!

June 2021

The heart of the village - pub/post office/shop all in one. As a result slightly feels like it's lost it's soul but nice to see everyone using the shop and post office side of the business and clearly a friendly local community. Nice enough views from the terrace, dogs welcome.

May 2021

The red lion is a unique place very friendly , and you can almost get anything you need here , and while you wait have a drink at the same time.

September 2019

Great they sell everything including beer bread milk eggs and a lot of other essentials and close when the pub closes. A very good idea as the nearest supermarket is about 3 miles away.

July 2019

lovely pub, lovely people, fantastic views

July 2018

Very good home-cooked food. Pleasant and attentive hosts.

May 2018

Fabulous, quirky, friendly all that a village pub and stores should be!

January 2018

Down to earth hub of the village Service always with a smile Don't expect luxury but it is amazing as not only a decent pub but post office and shop ad well As long as the pub is open it seems the shop is as well and it sells everything from newspapers & fresh croissants to cooked meats and household items

June 2017

Brilliant pub - has everything you could need in the shop, great little cafe and wonderful restaurant. Great for kids too.

June 2017

Very friendly and helpful staff. Has the advantage of an outside eating/drinking area. Reasonably well stocked shop/Post Office. Thoroughly recommend.

September 2023

Fantastic seafood and lovely location on the river but if you drive down you can only do this at low tide

July 2023

An absolute must for seafood and fish lovers. Amazing views to go along with the fabulous food and drink. Very dog friendly. Booking essential in season!!

May 2023

Great food at the Anchorstone would recommend - you need to book well in advance

May 2023

Excellent. Our favourite restaurant in Devon. Pity it is closed Tuesday & Wednesday.

April 2023

Fabulous

September 2022

Once we managed to get a table (only one day I’m entire week) it was fabulous! But closed two days of week Tues and Weds

August 2022

Fantastic lunch and great service

July 2022

The Anchorstone Cafe had such good reviews and our visit didn’t disappoint. We had a table directly overlooking the pontoon at Dittisham which was very busy and great fun to watch whilst dining. Prawns and scallops were delicious and that was just the starters, they serve amazing desserts too. Service was excellent. A must visit.

July 2022

Didn’t get chance to eat here, they make it difficult to book or look at a menu. Chain across the entrance, very unwelcoming, had to shout up to ask about booking. Didn’t bother in the end

July 2022

To call Anchorstone Cafe a "cafe' is absurd. A wonderful fish restaurant with excellent food and service.

May 2022

Didn’t use as Just way too expensive for a takeaway therefore unfair to rate in stars below as didn’t use premises

April 2022

Amazing lunches as always, wonderful menu, amazing staff and stunning location. Just sad to see Will and Jasmine leave.

September 2021

Almost don’t want to submit a review so we can keep Anchorstone a secret (however anyone who is in the know, is in the know) ………6 visits here during our recent trip to Devon and we’d have gone every day if we could have. I think that says it all. The Anchorstone & the tram there never ever disappoints!

July 2021

Food was lovely. It is difficult to book though, but highly recommended.

June 2021

A fantastic place for lunch during covid. Completely covered and most welcoming. Book to avoid disappointment!

May 2021

Hired the Lugger for a couple of hours. Lee was a star getting us sorted and I cannot recommend the location enough. Glorious. Professional set up. Walk around from the car park if driving to Dittisham and allow lots of time either side to enjoy the location and FBI...

April 2021

Fantastic food

October 2020

We did get take away from here, but we went in August and they didnt have a booking free until September! So if you do plan to go you need to book well in advance. Take away we did get was fine and service friendly.

September 2020

Excellent as before

August 2020

Excellent for coffee and cake although sadly they were fully booked all week for lunch so I would advise booking well in advance at peak season

August 2019

Unless you want to eat lunch at 1230 its virtually impossible to plan to eat here Putting your name on a list with a hope they call you when they have a table free is not ideal when trying to feed yourselves or your family

April 2019

Excellent. Pity it closed after our second day there.

October 2018

Always amazing, wonderful fresh fish and great staff. Definitely recommend.

September 2018

we have been every year for 7 years! we love the food, it never fails to please. staff polite and have the courtesy to tell you if there is a wait. it is always worth booking if you can but they only take bookings for 12.00, they wont guarantee anything after that

July 2018

We were very lucky in that we did not have to wait too long for a table: I would advise you to make a reservation in advance though as it is so popular. The food and service were excellent and one would be hard-pressed to find fault. We had a lovely table on the outside balcony so were able to enjoy the lovely views. I can thoroughly recommend this restaurant is you have a liking for freshly-caught fish: the burger apparently is excellent too!

July 2018

Brilliant situation overlooking the water.. Food was a delight. Good coffee. Will certainly re-visit. Need to book. Very popular.

May 2018

Best food. .5 stars. You will always return there, cooking is fantastic.

October 2017

Love love love this place food amazing, hosting and service excellent and very friendly, location is just beautiful. We travel miles out of our way to visit the Anchor stone Cafe. Frequent diners.

May 2017

What an absolute gem this is. Lovely coffee and cakes and wonderful seafood lunches. Great for kids & you can take dogs in the outside area.

Very limited menu

September 2021

Lovely clean and welcoming staff Food was lovely Lovely to sit outside for a drink as there wasn't many places you were able to do this

July 2021

Enjoyed meals on 2 evenings - the Covid rules changed between one visit and the next which made it more complicated, but staff were doing their best, and we were served promptly.

September 2020

Staff cocky, rubbish roast dinner, watery gravy, plain boiled veg! Avoid!

September 2020

A lovely, friendly pub that serves great food. Really good outside space with a very convenient outdoor bar area.

August 2019

We had the best meal here which was unfortunately on our last night! Will definitely eat there again, when we return to Dartmouth next year ????

August 2019

Lovely Doggy friendly pub. Very friendly staff. Excellent food and the cakes were amazing.

May 2019

Excellent for families with out side seating area and food above average. Drinks pricey tho as all pubs in Dartmouth!

July 2018

Called in for a quick sandwich as arrived early. Staff very friendly and even gave the dog biscuits.

June 2018

Ate here on our last night in Dartmouth and wished we had found it sooner. Excellent meal and good service.

March 2018

We were a party of eight visiting for an evening meal . We booked beforehand and were greeted immediately upon arrival and shown to our table upstairs . The waitress was pleasant and the restaurant was clean, fresh and had a warm friendly atmosphere . We are a picky bunch , but nothing was too much trouble and our waitress ran backwards and forwards to relay information from the kitchen to us . Having made decisions , and ordered we didn't have to wait long . The food arrived quickly , was hot , well presented , and plenty of it . Our waitress checked on us regularly . The food was tasty , fresh and filling , we had steaks , fish pies , pork , fish and chips , a good selection and everyone was happy . We would definitely eat here again . We loved the furnishings , especially the amazing dragons, one of our party was a seven year old little girl who thoroughly enjoyed going on a dragon hunt .

Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands
(3 miles)

(35)

Between Dartmouth and Slapton, Blackpool Sands is a beautiful shingle bay on the South West Coast Path, surrounded by evergreens and pine trees. It really is a treasure of a beach to visit while you’re in the area. Award-winning, the privately owned, blue flag beach boasts a sense of being in the Mediterranean on a good day in the summer, although a good jumper never goes amiss in this part of the world! You will no doubt not be surprised to hear that it is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, however it also boasts ample facilities and things to do. There are showers, toilets and disabled facilities, as well as paddle board, kayak and wetsuit hire available for those wishing to earn their visit to The Venus Beach Café, where light bites and refreshments are served. The Venus Shop also sells all the bits and pieces you might want for fun and games on the beach if you have forgotten them or are in need of extra buckets and spades. The water at Blackpool Sands is known for being clean and clear and tested by the Environment Agency, and lifeguards are on hand in the summer (July to September) so there’s every reason to pop in for a dip. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach in the high season (12th March to 30th October) so keep the walking for the cooler months. There is parking available at the beach with seasonal charges, and you can find out more information on those from the Blackpool Sands information line on 01803 771800. This beach is easy to get to and quite literally fun and games for the whole family, as well as a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to take in the view!

June 2023

Visited Blackpool sands on our honeymoon 27 years ago and have enjoyed it on both occasions. A lovely clean beach with a very nice restaurant/cafe. We walked to the beach and got the local bus back up to Stoke Fleming.

May 2023

we love this beach always clean good parking clean facilities and good cafe.

September 2022

We did go to this beach, couldn’t go in the sea as it was so rough, was beautiful though. No sand, but still very nice.

September 2022

Beautiful beach; very blue water. It’s more a pebbly rather than a sandy beach, love it all the same. It’s clean and there are lifeguards in the summer months which is when we visited. The toilets were clean and not far from the beach; no queues for the toilet either. Parking can be a bit pricey at £9 for the whole day of you come in the morning but didn’t mind it. You pay less though if you come in the afternoon. The is a little sandpit area for a any kids who want to play in sand

September 2022

It is a really beautiful beach although, despite its name, it is not a sandy beach, however our son and grandson were keen on paddle boarding. They made a special visit for this and were told that the paddleboard facilities were closed but to come the following day when the facilities were still closed! Considering that this was during the height of the holiday season, my son was a bit put out having made two wasted trips.

August 2022

A lovely beach, stunning veiw as you drive down towards it. Very clean with clear water.

August 2022

Lovely clean beach although very quiet. There was a small charge for parking.

Lovely sandy beach. Parked here (£2) whilst doing a circular walk and then returned for a walk along the beach.

November 2020

Dogs allowed on beach out of season, a bracing walk with coffee and millionaire shortbread at the cafe to finish.

October 2020

Great beach really beautiful , even in the rain, as the Venus café is right on the beach and is warm, dry and serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices.

October 2019

One of our favourite beaches, in a beautiful setting. Plenty of car parking and plenty of room on the beach, even on a busy day. The sea is clean and clear and the facilities are excellent (nice to have changing rooms). Thoroughly recommend this beach.

October 2019

Beautiful stretch of shingle beach nestled between steep hills at either end. Excellent facilities including one of the best beach cafes we've ever visited.

September 2019

We had a wonderful day at Blackpool sands. A shingle beach within a lovely cove, it was clean and felt safe for the children to swim in the water (which was also sparkling). The beach is privately run, so the carpark fee was a bit stiff (£8 for the day), however the upside of this was a beautifully clean beach with lots of amenities, including rental of SUPs and other water equipment, a great cafe, and really clean loos. On a busy day you would need to arrive before lunchtime, or the carpark will shut, but this also means that the beach didn't feel crowded at all.

September 2019

Parking charge between £3 - £8 depending on time of year, Also food good but e.g. Hawaiian Prawns (£9) consisted of 5 prawns. Not good value for money.

October 2018

Lovely beach, not sandy but the stones are okay. Good food, beverages, coast guards, Nice view and not so cowded

August 2018

Lovely clean beach in super location along coastal road. Great place to visit.

May 2018

Beautiful clean beach with excellent facilities.Clean toilets lovely cafe and shop.Lifeguard on the beach. No dogs allowed.Plenty of parking. We enjoyed rock pooling at the far end of the beach. The owner does a great job.You can also visit Blackpool Sands garden but we did not have time. Also a juggler was there on the day we went great fun for everyone.

August 2017

Beautiful location but shame it a shingle beach and not sandy. Also very disappointed with the £8 fee to park the car .

August 2017

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Elberry Cove
(5 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

Churston Cove
(6 miles)

If you’re willing to venture off the beaten track, you’ll discover one of Brixham’s hidden gems, Churston Cove. Surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides, this beautiful little cove isn’t the easiest to get to, which makes it an idyllic, peaceful place to while away the day. The crystal clear water is safe for kids to paddle and play in, and is a popular swimming spot. Parking is available at Freshwater carpark, a 15-minute walk away. There are no toilet facilities or cafes, and the beach is accessed via a long, steep path, which is uneven in places, but this beautiful little cove is worth the effort. Churston Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

Fishcombe Cove
(6 miles)

(1)

Take the coast path from Brixham and escape the crowds at Fishcombe Cove, a peaceful shingle cove, protected on all sides by tall red cliffs. Access to this little cove isn’t easy, via a steep path from Freshwater carpark, but it is definitely worth the effort. The clear, blue sea is sheltered and calm, making it a favourite with swimmers and kayakers. Fishcombe Cove is also a popular place for boats and yachts to moor up and make the most of the beautiful water. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a seal popping its head up to say hello. There is a café and toilets here, but both are only open during the summer months. Fishcombe Cove is dog-friendly all year round.

A lovely little cove perfect to have a dip in the ocean. Be warned though that there is a steep downward hill to get to it and it is a rocky beach so there is plenty of slippery seaweed around. It is nice and sheltered and wasn't too busy either so a great place to get your feet wet or to go for a swim. Would recommend :-)

We enjoyed our stay - it would be cramped for four people staying though !

July 2023

A lovely stay but I was a bit concerned about hygiene and cleanliness particularly following Covid. As stated previously there was a lack of hand wash and cleaning products. Perhaps other guests do not clean the property to my standards.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave some feedback, we're pleased you had a lovely stay, although sorry to hear you were concerned about the cleanliness. This is the first time we have heard concerns regarding cleanliness at the property and we have passed on your comments to the housekeeping team. Fortunately Covid has not been prevalent in the area for quite a while now, however we, and the owners, are of course conscious some individuals may still need to be extra vigilant, so ensure the property always has multipurpose cleaner, soap, washing up liquid and bleach, along with many other cleaning products. Best wishes, The Toad Hall Team

Blessed by beautiful weather, we've had a fabulous week exploring this corner of Devon - so much to do and see! The comforts, peace and amazing views provided by The Linhay have added to our enjoyment enormously.

What a fabulous base for a sunny week in Devon. Sitting on the patio looking over the views was so peaceful. A lovely place and the hosts were so welcoming. Than you.

May 2023

We have had a lovely time here at The Linhay, a lovely cottage in a peaceful and quiet location. Such a lovely vista to look out at every day, and to see such a variety of birds. We have been out and about visiting the many lovely beaches and towns as the weather has been kind. Thank you for the surprises in the fridge and the Nespresso capsules. Lovely coffee. We hope to return soon.

May 2023

The lane to the cottage is very narrow with only a few passing places, luckily we only met one car all week!

Thank you for taking the time to leave some feedback. Fortunately with very little traffic using this short stretch or road, it very much adds to the wonderful peace and tranquillity of this location. With just the residents of a few properties and some people accessing the small creek, being the main users, the well-placed passing spaces should certainly prove adequate. We hope to welcome you again soon. Best wishes, The Toad Hall Team.

Would definitely use again can see a problem with the access lane in the future due to very poor state. We would like to thank Toad Hall for the very generous welcome pack, very much appreciated.

April 2023

We had a lovely week - weather kind apart from today! Visited Greenway and Coleton Fishacre - both National Trust and worth visiting. Also did plenty of walking. Grateful for the constant hot water and amazing heating system. Also the welcome pack and fridge goodies. Only met a car once on the narrow in/out route. Local pub friendly and food plentiful. A mirror in the master bedroom could be a good addition. Many thanks for such a comfortable cottage.

Very relaxing stay. Fabulous views and comfortable accommodation.

Beautiful cottage in a tranquil location. Really enjoyed our stay. Thank you

September 2022

The only drawback for this accommodation was the very narrow and rough access road. We have been to Devon many times so we know the roads are narrow but this one was particularly so and had only a couple of passing places. However we were lucky and did not meet any traffic coming the other way until we were leaving to go home!

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review, we're glad to hear you had an enjoyable stay with just the one drawback. As you mention, the roads in Devon can certainly become a little narrow so it's fortunate this one is only 0.5 mile to Chipton Barton. It also takes very little traffic with just people accessing the small creek and a few other homes seemingly the main users, meaning it is nice and quiet and peaceful there.
