Description

Couples are in for a treat at The Toll House. This charming, all on one level detached cottage, lies tucked in a fold on the edge of the beautiful Yealm estuary, surrounded by National Trust woodland and has simply glorious uninterrupted views across the water, a safe haven for all manner of craft. The coastal path runs alongside the cottage, so wonderful coastal and countryside walks start literally from the doorstep. The nearby unspoilt twin villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers offer an excellent selection of shops and pubs. Originally the Toll House for the Yealm Estuary Ferry the cottage still features the original toll charges on the side of the property, very evocative of a bygone era! This attractive, slightly unusual cottage, each room linking from one to the other, has been recently refurbished and provides a wonderful opportunity for couples to get away from it all, at any time of the year. Here you can explore some of the loveliest areas of South Devon, wake up to the sound of water lapping and ducks quacking, curl up on a window seat with a book or simply observe the activity on the sparkling River Yealm from the comfort of the cottage. On sunny days the pretty, gently tiered garden and summerhouse provide a peaceful spot from which to enjoy the stunning views and you can even bring your own dinghy that can be kept below the cottage on a private slipway, by arrangement.

“What an idyllic spot to relax and chill out watching the boats and tides. At night, hearing the lapping water and owls hooting in the woods. A perfect week in a beautiful little hideaway” - Sue, Southampton

“The happiest of times in a perfect place. Who would want for more! Wonderful cottage, beautiful quiet location, delightful walks, flowers, birds. Thanks for creating such a lovely place to stay." The Martins.

Front door into small tiled hallway supplied with coat hooks and washing machine. Off the hallway is a small shower room with corner electric shower, heated towel rail, basin and WC. The hallway opens into the attractive double bedroom furnished with a 4ft 6in bed, chest of drawers, hanging hooks and there are lovely window views. Door from here into the bright, spacious, well furnished living room with two sets of windows overlooking the estuary. The well equipped and refurbished kitchen is partly partitioned from the lounge area and has a range of cream units, fridge/freezer, ceramic hob, electric oven and microwave. The sitting room has a comfortable sofa, chair, dining table to seat up to 4, a hearth inset with an electric flame effect burner, LCD TV with DVD player, CD/cassette stereo player and plenty of books. A small rear lobby provides a storage area for boots and has access to the garden.

From the rear lobby a door opens to a patio area with steps down to the coastal path that runs below the cottage. From the patio, steps lead up to three terraces, the first supplied with table and chairs, the second has a glass summer house with garden furniture and the third with a bench and rotary line. Below the cottage is a private slipway, where, by arrangement, small dinghies can be kept, launching at the main Noss Mayo slipway. The property is supplied with its own UV filtered water.

For one car only, sharing use of owners’ driveway.

  • Included: Bed linen, towels (not beach towels), heating (night storage) and electricity. No cot or high chair but babes in arms with moses basket welcome.
  • Telephone: No telephone, Mobile signal patchy. Wifi available.
  • Local Facilities: Estuary beach below the cottage. Cellars beach half a mile. Pubs in Noss Mayo less than a mile. Shop, pub and restaurant in Newton Ferrers 2.5 miles by road, or 1.5 miles at low tide across the causeway between the two villages. Plymouth 11 miles.

Very much so. Sharon and Trevor are great.

August 2017

As I mentioned above, everything was utterly perfect. The Toll House's location was ideal, with coastal walks more than accessible and easy to do in a day. The cottage is tiny but perfect for one/two people, with lovely outdoor space for sunshine and views. It is perfectly secluded but the sleepy little harbour provided much entertainment and the walk into Noss Mayo delightful for pubs, shopping etc. Joyce and Michael (and Lundy!) were such hospitable and wonderful hosts - always willing to help and yet respected one's privacy. I look forward to returning in 2018 !

June 2017

Idyllic location - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. All our needs anticipated. We loved being 'far from the world'.

June 2017

Excellent location, cottage very well equipped

May 2017

Peace, quiet, open air and sunshine. Perfect. What more could one ask for. Can't wait to return. Mr and Mrs Bowyer (Mike and Joyce) keep it in beautiful order. Thank you

January 2017

The Toll House is in an excellent location. It is small but perfect for a quiet break with great views, lovely walks and good pubs nearby. Have stayed at the cottage for several years and no doubt that we will return next year.

January 2017

Beautiful peaceful location I could spend all day sat on the window seat watching the the different vessels going up & down the estuary. I did find the bathroom a little cramped but that didn't deter us from returning

June 2015

The Toll House was amazing , such a beautiful location it blew us away . We had a wonderful week and can't wait to come back .

May 2015

super position with plenty of things to see on the river

May 2015

Very quite setting good for walking bird watching sailing

January 2015

This was our second long weekend at this lovely cottage. It's comfortable, spotlessly clean and has delightful views. It's a short walk to the Ship Inn which serves lovely food.

September 2014

The Toll House at Noss Mayo was far above my expectations. The location was amazing. The owners were extremely helpful, leaving arrival refreshments and flowers. If you like walking this is the place. I had a fantastic week. I would recommend the food in the Ship Inn, Noss Mayo, i.e. if you can drag yourself away from the view from the windows of the Toll House.

July 2014

Idyllic location, breathtakingly beautiful views. By far the best views of any of the holiday cottages in Nose Mayo. Very comfortable cottage.

March 2014

Thank you to the owners for a most relaxing holiday. We chose this cottage for its amazing position and views – both of which surpassed our already high expectations. So quiet and restful too. Thank you for putting sweet peas in the lounge and for the shortbread biscuits. We loved the week and hope to be back sometime this year.

March 2014

A second visit for me and I hope not my last. The combination of the comfort of the cottage, the kindness and hospitality of the owners, the peace and tranquility – quite literally on the doorstep, and the many beautiful places which surround it all make the Toll House a perfect retreat. And as if that was not enough I also had a week full of sunshine and saw the most fantastic sunset across the estuary.

February 2014

An easy painless experience, would use you again for the south west area

January 2014

We stayed in this delightful cottage for a long weekend 17-20 January 2014. It is very attractive and comfortable with beautiful views, and was spotlessly clean. The owners, Mr and Ms Bowyer, who live in the main house above were very welcoming and helpful. Teabags, milk and biscuits were in the cottage for our arrival.

September 2013

The Toll House is one of the most idyllic places I have ever stayed and this is only enhanced by the little extras which the owners put in place to make visitors feel at home. The service received from Toad Hall cottages has always been helpful and friendly and the whole process from browsing and choosing a destination, through to payment and experiencing the holiday, have been clear, friendly and helpful. Thank You!

May 2013

The Toll House is by far the best self-catering accommodation w have stayed at. It is only let down by the very small bathroom, a challenge to anyone over average size. The owners had just replaced the mattress which was so hard we didnt sleep well. However, would stay again as everything else is perfect. If only all property owners put in the effort that these people do!
