This delightful four bedroom period cottage, is situated  in a unique and totally secluded position right on the water’s edge at the end of a tidal estuary in East Portlemouth, close to Salcombe in south Devon.   Ideal for nature lovers and those in search of peace and quiet; a more heavenly spot would be hard to find.

Waterhead Cottage is a much loved, comfortable family home with all the characteristics of a traditional cottage and all rooms have glorious views of the estuary and surrounding countryside.  The cottage has a good sized garden with a sunny patio beside the creek.  This is a perfect spot for those who love messing about on the water and when the tide is out, you can walk across the estuary and over the fields to the local pub at South Pool, about one mile away. However, remember the rising tide for the return trek! 

Please Note: The cottage is accessed via a steep, mainly grass and gravel 75 yard long footpath which leads down to the cottage, As a result Waterhead may not be suitable for the elderly or those with a walking disability.

Stable front door to L shaped hall. Fabulous, very spacious, light and airy triple aspect kitchen/diner with small sitting area with wood-burning stove and sofa. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and fitted with high quality units, large oil fired 4 door Aga, ceramic hob, electric oven,  dishwasher and larder fridge. Dining area with refectory style table and 6 chairs (garden chairs can be used for additional persons), French windows lead from the dining/sitting area to the patio and garden. Main dual aspect sitting room with exposed ceiling beams, open fire, comfortable sofa, 2 armchairs, window seat, French window to rear patio and TV  for playing DVD’s only. (Please note there is no TV reception). Utility area off the hall with washing machine, tumble dryer, combi microwave and freezer. Bathroom with bath, shower attachment plus further shower over the bath (similar to a power shower), basin, WC and large heated towel rail. Stairs from the sitting room to small landing off which there are four bedrooms and a bathroom. Triple aspect master bedroom with Superking 6ft (zip link) double bed (please advise at time of booking if you require as 2 3ft singles, this will not be possible after arrival). Dual aspect twin bedroom with two 3ft (zip-link) beds (please advise at time of booking if you require as 6ft Superking, this will not be possible after arrival). Bunk bedroom, 3 foot bunks, further bedroom with 3 foot zip and link (please specify at time of booking if this is required as a double or twin beds). Bathroom with bath with shower attachment and further shower over the bath, basin and WC. The staircase and all downstairs rooms have stripped timber flooring with the occasional rug. All upstairs rooms are fully carpeted.

Patio terrace beside the estuary with table and chairs. Further patio at the side of the cottage. Natural garden laid mainly to lawn with shrubs. Steep access path.

Parking is on the concrete track over the road from the footpath to the cottage. Additional parking in layby 75 yards from the property.

  • Included: Bed linen (not towels, although these can be hired; call for details). Please note that bed linen is provided, but the beds will not be made up. WiFi, heating, electricity and oil for the Aga. PLEASE SPECIFY BED MAKE UP FOR ZIP LINK BEDS WHEN BOOKING.
  • Logs provided with honesty box, £5 per basket.
  • Telephone: Incoming and emergency service calls only. Mobile reception mixed, Orange/EE good.
  • Local Facilities: Tidal estuary outside with sandy beach 1 mile. Good shop, leisure store and fuel station 3.5 miles, pub half a mile walk over the fields using a public footpath or 2 miles by car.. Kingsbridge 7.5 miles, East Portlemouth with passenger ferry to Salcombe 1 mile.
  • Pets: Pet charge £25.00 per pet per week.

Peaceful, quiet, beautiful location. Fabulous beds and bed linen. Loved the coziness of the Aga. Excellent set up for dogs.

This is a beautiful place in a stunning location, extremely comfortable and attractive inside, and we really appreciate being allowed to visit with our two dogs. We did find it hard to understand the directions to the non-4x4 parking so arrived slightly stressed out. The clearest way to put it would be the layby across from the first entrance to Waterhead Farm as you drive from South Pool. On the pencilled sketch this is called a Passing/Parking place, not a layby as it is in the directions, and there are various other pull-ins. We drove up and down a few times!
